SAMPLING IN BRAZILCarolin, Annika and José have successfully finished t h e i r fi r s t s a m p l i n g campaign in this Brazilian spring on Funil “Pea Soup” Reservoir in Rio de Janeiro State. They then drove directly to the next reservoir, Furnas in Minas Gerais State, to catch the finish of the decreasing water level before the rainy season arrives.

Emma and Raquel, along with Gaby and Caique have been successfully working on Camargos Reservoir (located further upstream the same river as Furnas), doing a subbottom and sediment survey for Emma’s Master’s Thesis. Emma fought with bats, rescued a reservoir dog, and is now analyzing all her sediment data.

NEW FACESP a b l o U r r u t i a Cordero will work as research coordinator w i th in the S ITES AquaNet network. Pablo is originally f r o m S p a i n a n d recently completed his PhD at Lund University on the adaptive management of lakes to global environmental changes. He combined long-term monitoring data and experimental studies in mesocosms to explore the potent ial of food web manipulations to buffer against the increased incidence of algal blooms and loss of plankton biodiversity in a future climate.

On October 11th and 13th Anna N. and Katrin went out on the first sampling campaign for the EuroRun project to assess day and nighttime CO2 emissions in two streams in Uppland. The Uppsala sampling team also includes Joachim Audet and José Ledesma from SLU.

Eco-DAS XII (Ecological Dissertations in the Aquatic Sciences) occurred at University of Hawai'i Manoa at the end of October and Raven was one of 35 participants in this year's symposium.

The symposia foster collaborations between interdisciplinary areas of ecological research in oceanography and l imnology th rough melding individual's manuscript proposals into co-author groups. Funding, networking, and career exploration are a l so topics o f structured discussion during the week.
