1 Taylor's Principles

• In 1789-1864, Richard Robertsused the plug and

collar gauges to inspect the part dimensions；

• In 1857, Joseph hite!orth demonstrated the use

o" internal and e#ternal gauges "or a sha"t-based

limit s$stem

• In 19%5, illium &a$lor e#plained the concept o"

a relationship bet!een the t!o processes o"chec'ing the component(

• )is concepts, 'no!n as &a$lor*s principles, are used in

the design o" smooth limit gauges(



• &a$lor stares that the *+* gauge should chec' all

the possible elements o" dimensions at a time and

the * + * gauge should chec' onl$ one elemento" the dimension at a time(

limits o" components(

2 Smooth Limit Gauges

test o" holes and sha"ts

gauges, and caliper gauges !ith the + and &

+ sides "orming one set

chec' the accurac$ o" a hole !ith the highl$

"inished ends o" di""erent diameters• I" the hole si.e is correct !ithin the tolerable

limits, the small end mar'ed 2go3 !ill enter the
