WELCOME, FRIENDS.

The early winter session begins in mid-November, offering a unique opportunity for students to experiment with new mediums in 3- or 4-week classes, pursue their own projects during dedicated open studio in every department, or take special classes and workshops not offered at other times of the year.

As the seasons have shifted, our community has expanded, making great strides for art education in Chicago. ArtReach at Lillstreet, our not-for-profit sister organization, recently celebrated the completion of a public art project in partnership with Ravenswood Elementary—you can see the students’ beautiful mosaic planters outside the school. We invite you to learn more about ArtReach while supporting their programming and mission at Art to the People, the annual fundraiser, on November 9. Live music, inventive cocktails & hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and much more will make for a memorable evening.

Lillstreet is especially excited to add The Drawing Workshop to our community. For 40 years, The Drawing Workshop, now located across the tracks at 4410 N Ravenswood, has offered a unique program that prepares the serious art student to develop a strong visual vocabulary in a classical, atelier style environment. By bringing Lillstreet’s painting and drawing classes into the wonderful space that houses The Drawing Workshop and adding new classes to enhance the already existing traditions, we will continue the serious environment and instruction offered by this Chicago institution.

On November 22 and 23, join us as we celebrate the season with the kickoff of Let There Be Light, our 38th Annual Holiday Show & Sale, featuring our holiday exhibition opening, great new gift items in the shop, the holiday party, the 2nd annual holiday art fair, and free art workshops in the Lillstreet Loft.

We look forward to another year of growing our creative community with new and old friends alike.

Workshops and classes are also a great time to be with friends and share the experience of blowing glass ornaments, making a felted stocking, or printing your own holiday paper goods.

HOLIDAY MUGS(1 DAY)

In this workshop students will be able to create a one of kind ceramic mug great for the cold winter months. Using terra cotta slabs of clay students will build the cup form and add handles. After the basic mug form is created, the possibilities for decoration are endless. We can add names to personalize the mugs, draw winter themed images or just paint the mugs in different colors. Add a packet of cocoa and these mugs will make the perfect gift.

The holiday season is coming and we’re making beads to celebrate! Working on a Hot Head torch, learn to make a Christmas tree, snowman, stocking, a candy treat or Santa. Samples will be on hand for inspiration. Basic sculptural techniques will be covered. Materials fee includes all glass and tools. All levels welcome.

PRINT AND DYE TEA TOWELS WORKSHOP(1 DAY)

Spend your morning creating a set of tea towels for your holiday guests! We will do a quick dye from our assortment of MX dyes, and then screenprint with ink onto your towels with stock images and patterns. A set of 4 tea towels provided in the workshop. Dress for mess!

FELTED ORNAMENTS AND STOCKINGS WORKSHOP(1 DAY)

Make your own ornaments for this holiday season in this one-day wet felting workshop. Explore the possibilities of wet felting techniques and create one-of-kind ornaments such as color beads and miniature socks. Everyone will walk away with several pieces to use as gifts and home decorations. Students can choose to apply small sculpture with the same techniques and materials in the future. All materials are provided. We provide some wool roving, but colors are limited. You may purchase color wool roving before the workshop. Children must be accompanied by adult. Ages 10+. BLOWN GLASS ORNAMENT WORKSHOP(1 DAY)

A holiday favorite! In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to blow glass on a torch. Pre-made glass “points” and colored glass turn into beautiful, round holiday ball ornaments. Each student can make approximately five ornaments, each finished with a metal hook. Everything is finished and ready to bring home at the end of the class. All materials included.

No experience necessary. Ages 14+.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, everyone could stand to have gifts stashed away for special friends and loved ones. In this fast paced class, students will be in production mode cranking out gifts such as tea towels, t-shirts, bags or other goodies from our well-stocked sales locker. Great for returning students looking for a fun atmosphere during class and access to weekly open studio. Come prepared with images to burn as well as inks/dyes and fabrics to print on.

SCREENPRINTED HOLIDAY CARDS (4 WEEKS)

Just in time for the Holidays and the New Year, come to Lillstreet and print up some greeting cards. This class will use Screen Printing techniques to create a set of unique and individual cards and matching envelopes. Using hand drawn or digitally produced imagery, we will investigate pattern, image, and text to create one of a kind gifts. This class is accessible to both first time printers and those with some experience. Students will also be offered open studio time to explore the process on their own. Material fee covers ink and a set of cards and envelopes.

SAGGAR FIRING(4 WEEKS)

Here’s your chance to get a taste of an alternate form of firing. Saggars are refractory containers; fine Chinese porcelain work was fired inside saggars to keep fly ash and other impurities off during firing. Today the same method is used to contain combustibles and organic materials to encourage interesting surfaces on the work inside. We’ll talk about the best forms for this kind of low temperature firing and explore surface preparation as well as do in class loading and firing. In this workshop students will be able to create a one of kind ceramic mug great for the cold winter months. Using terra cotta slabs of clay students will build the cup form and add handles. After the basic mug form is created, the possibilities for decoration are endless. We can add names to personalize the mugs, draw winter themed images or just paint the mugs in different colors. Add a packet of cocoa and these mugs will make the perfect gift.

Create a unique new look for copper enamel designs by drawing with graphite pencils directly onto fired glass enamel surfaces. Drawing skills are helpful, but not essential. BLOWN GLASS ORNAMENT WORKSHOP(1 DAY)

A holiday favorite! In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to blow glass on a torch. Pre-made glass “points” and colored glass turn into beautiful, round holiday ball ornaments. This multilevel class teaches the basics of oil painting as well as helping those with more experience develop their skills. Learn how to paint with wax in this multi-level class. Use pigments, damar crystals, various types of waxes as well as other ingredients to create multi-layered, heavily textured to paint on a variety of surfaces. Work with metals tools and special brushes as well as torches, heat guns and irons. Encapsulate additional materials and collage the surface. Artists of all media will enjoy the limitless possibilities of working in encaustics. LILLSTREET TEXTILE ARTS is a growing community interested in traditional and contemporary craft media. Our expanded sewing studio offers more class space and upgraded equipment, including an industrial sewing machine, overlock and serger machines. Our print on paper and fabric classes feature a dark room with a state-of-the-art UV vacuum exposure unit. Students have access to a computer station with a laser printer and the Adobe suite for prepping images, as well as generous open studio time to work independently. We offer classes in a range of topics including dyes, screenprinting, sewing, and even digital printing onto fabric.

Our student population is diverse- from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops, and consignment, to all levels of artists developing skills to develop their portfolio and continue their creative education.

Nuno felting is back just in time for the cold winter weather. You’ll begin by making samples and end up creating a unique scarf or Nuno fabric of your own, and can walk away with more if you take advantage of open studio hours. Create lace-like, textural Nuno from silk and wool roving. Felting the wool onto silk creates a lovely and unique puckering texture. Students will provide materials after the first week of class. Jenn Beeman is a designer and patternmaker living and working in Chicago, working under the name of Grainline Studio. Spend time with Jenn this Winter creating a staple item for your wardrobe, the Archer Button Up! This loosely fitted button-up shirt has long sleeves, (think flannel!) and a contemporary fit. The garment will be constructed with a custom pattern printed and provided by Grainline Studio. OPEN STUDIOTake this opportunity to start something new, finish that series of etchings or to drop on that last layer of screenprint color. Monitored Open Studio time is available between regular sessions to students who have taken a class in the Printmaking Department at Lillstreet within the last year for a weekly rate. All students provide their own paper; some papers are available for purchase from monitors. Screenprinters provide their own inks and screens (up to 20”x30” only). Intermediate Screen is a great way for those with experience to continue printing and learn some new tricks such as the color fade technique. World famous art photographers like Andreas Gursky, Edward Burtynski, Sally Mann, and Ansel Adams all have used view cameras to get exceptionally sharp images. This class will show you how to operate such a camera and get amazing results. We will shoot film, then scan for resolution that no DSLR can come close to. Photographs will then be edited digitally and printed on our state of the art printers. Camera techniques such as perspective control and tilt/shift will be discussed. Students will need to purchase film and pay for film processing.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH ARTWORK (3 WEEKS)

Artists need photographs of their work, but it can be expensive to have done, and frustrating to do it yourself. This class will show you how to make effective photographs of your paintings, ceramics, or jewelry, with a few simple lighting techniques and understanding of your camera. You’ll also learn how to use the computer to adjust, crop, and resize your images for websites and juried shows. Please bring your digital camera, a small piece of your artwork to photograph, and a flash drive.

CANCELLATIONSClasses are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSESAND WORKSHOPSTuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop.
