Safety Instructions

Equipment operates with rotating blades as high speed – the following safety precautions should be observes at all times. Stand clear of equipment whilst in operation or in a raised position. Keep body clear of moving parts at all times. Do not operate damaged or faulty equipment. Ensure that protective shields and covers are in place before use. Do not remove any guards or covers whilst in operation. Do not perform service or maintenance on this equipment whilst the PTO is engaged, or when the tractor engine is on. Disengage the PTO when transporting the machine or when not in use. Take care when leaving the tractor. Ensure that the machine is in the lowered position, the PTO is disengaged, the tractors parking brake is on, the tractors engine is off and the key is removed. Do not allow passengers on the tractor or machine when operating. Onlookers should maintain a safe minimum distance from the machine when in use. A safe distance is recommended at 50 meters. Never touch the rotor, gearbox, driveshaft, pulleys or belts when the tractor engine is running. Turn the engine off first and disengage the PTO. If performing maintenance on the machine whilst it is held on the tractors 3 point linkage, ensure that the machine body is properly supported by blacks or stands under the body. Before commencing operation ensure that all obstructions (such as stumps, stones, bottles, tins, wire etc) are removed from the area. If operating beside public pathways, in parks or gardens, or in any area in the proximity of people, take special recusations to ensure safety. Carefully inspect the ground for obstructions, and discourage all spectators when operating in public areas.

Starting Instructions for the ‘Lilley’ Forage Harvester

The main feature of the Lilley forage harvester is simplicity and high output. Attention to the points noted in these starting and operating instructions will help you get the best out of your machine. Connecting to the tractor Being fully linkage mounted, with both offset and centre mount brackets standard, the Lilley forage harvester is very easily connected to the tractor linkage. First raise the front of the machine and adjust to storage position. This will raise the bottom linkage brackets up for easy coupling to the tractor. Most tractors have one adjustable link arm and one semi fixed arm. Select linkage mounting required, offset or centre, and connect the semi fixed arm to the clevis hitch bracket with correct size pin – bush and secure pins in position with lynch pins. Adjust the sway bars, chain or sway blocks so that side movement of machine is limited. The third link or top arm is then fitted. The bracket on the forager has a series of holes to cover the full range of tractors and can be turned end for end as required. The top of this bracket should be as near as possible to the horizontal. The ball joint of the top link of tractor should be fitted to the hole nearest tractor, damage will occur to top link when forager is raised if the back hole were used. Fit safety cover to front of gearbox and tighten all bolts. Fit over run-slip clutch to splined shaft of the gearbox. The use of a lubricating medium will assist fitting. Ensure the balls of over run – slip clutch have engaged in groove of gearbox splined shaft. DOUBLE CHECK. Fitting the Drive Shaft Check that the drive shaft section is adequately greased as it is required to slide in and out under load when forager is raised and lowered. The female shaft fits only one way over male shaft, to ensure that the drive shaft end clevis’s are always in the same plane. A lubricating medium applied to the internal splines will assist in fitting the joints to shafts. Connect the female half of the drive shaft to the forager over run-slip clutch splined shaft, ensuring that the spring retaining pin has engaged in the groove of the splined shaft. Do not hit bearings with a hammer. The male half of the drive shaft is then connected to tractor PTO shaft, ensuring retaining pin has located in groove off PTO shaft. Raise and lower linkage to check shaft engagement, minimum of 15 cm engagement of male section in female section in most intended position, and not to bottom in the shortest position.

Operation Adjustments The first adjustment is made by varying the position of the lower linkage pins in the quadrant plates of the clevis hitch brackets and the final adjustment is made with the top link. Adjust the bottom link pins so that they bring the forage as near as possible to the tractor whilst maintaining adequate tyre clearance and correct drive shaft adjustment. If the forager is to be used with a forage cart, fit the cart to the forager and adjust top link so that forage flow is directed approximately to the centre top of cart front. This can be done roughly by sighting the top of forage chute with the cart whilst forager is on the ground. Skid Adjustment Height of cut is determined by skid adjustment. Set the skid to cut as low as desired. Raising the skids will assist in missing small stones and clods of earth. Test Cutting Take a short run with the machine, 540 PTO revs. and check the forage flow to the cart so that it loads correctly. Minor adjustments to top link will direct the flow to where required. Maintenance Lubrication The gearbox has been filled with high quality 80W90 GL5 gear oil. There are five grease points on the machine. Two on rotor spindle bearings, one on gearbox extension shaft and two on the drive shaft. Under heavy working conditions, rotor and extension shaft will require one short of grease every eight hours and every four hours on drive shaft. Check gear box oil level before starting and once per week during harvesting. Belt Tension This should be checked before work is started and again one hour later after initial stretch has occurred, and then daily during harvesting. Allow a maximum play of 25 mm. Bolts and Nuts All nuts and bolts should be checked regularly for tightness. Gearbox mounting bolts, top link bracket bolts and skid bolts should be checked daily during harvesting. Trailer Hitch Pin Should be at least 22mm (7/8.) diameter, hardened with self locking means. If the trailer comes off, damage will result. Trip Rope The length of the trailer trip rope is best set with the tractor and forager turned sharply to the right. A little slack at this point prevents the automatic door opening during sharp turns.

Operating Instructions The forager must be run at a full 540 PTO revs. Lower the forager into the crop at full revs, do not run the rotor at idle speeds in the crop, forage may accumulate in discharge. Cut out a land of sufficient length to half fill the cart. Do not cut around the corners. A shift up to a higher gear at the end of each land will assist in compacting the load. This method will keep corners square and eliminate wasted forage, giving heavier and better filled loads, the return cut will fill cart and have the filled cart near to the pit or stack. Cutting each land in a different direction will ensure cleaner cutting, particularly in very wet tall crops. Dumping the Loads Loads can be dumped in the pit or stack in a long line. The first load is dumped at the start of the line and following loads are swung past and backed up to give a close dumping of loads. Rolling Down of Loads When desired amount of forage has been dumped, the cart can be dropped and rolling can take place with forager attached. Roll at very low idle speeds. Caution and care when rolling are of the up most importance. Shutting the Door The rear door of cart shuts automatically. It can do this only if the forager is lowered. Should dumped load conditions prevent door closing, drive forward and when door has reached limit of outward swing, apply tractor brakes, this will close the door without operator having to leave the tractor. Cutting Blade The cutting blades can be sharpened with angle grinder or similar tool the forager can be rolled over to give easy access. Sharp cutting blades cut cleaner and reduce horse power requirements. Rough Conditions The patented rubber swung cutting blades on the forager will work longer than other types of forage cutting mechanisms. In rough conditions cutting blades can break, do not run the forager with one or more broken cutting blades as this will upset rotor balance and cause vibration which will result in serious damage. By connecting cutting blade to back of rubber flail some breakages can be avoided in extreme conditions.

IMPORTANT

ROTOR ASSEMBLY BALANCE The Forage Harvester rotor assembly has been dynamically balanced at operating revolutions. ‘Fine Tune’ balance has been achieved by adding extra plates on the flail connection to rotor, as and where required. It is important that when these plates are removed for flail replacement, that the plates are replaced in original position to maintain rotor balance. EXTRA PLATES As and when required for fine tune balance.

When removed, plates MUST be refitted in original position.
