It is sometimes debated whether art should have a purpose or whether it is enough if art is executed simply for its own sake: ars gratia artis. Many would agree that one of the intentions of the artist is to make a statement of some kind. It may be a simple statement, the beauty of the landscape or of the human form for example, but it is a statement. Somehow the artist is trying to communicate an idea, an emotion, or a purpose in his or her work.

Art may satisfy a psychological need or it may have a social function of communicating a point of view or it may simply aim at an aesthetic expression of beauty without any function other than that of ornamentation. In its social dimension, art can be a catalyst for change by providing opportunities for reform in social mores or it can try to comment on collective or individual outlooks. It can cause people to re-examine their ideas or beliefs on the subject that is put before them.

Whatever may have been the purposes, or absence of them, that inspired the artists whose works are up for auction in this exhibition, they all have a common aim now: it is that of providing means of raising funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Following the success of last year’s auction when a very substantial sum of money was raised, we have this year decided to widen the description of the objects donated for auction from simply “art” to “collectables”. A collectable for this purpose does not mean anything which may be collected. It does not include natural objects

like butterflies or unusual pebbles. Collectables for our purpose means manufactured items of high quality which could qualify as art or craft and which would appeal to collectors of such objects. These may include antiques, architectural stone carvings, modern or antique paintings, jewellery, majolica, coins and furniture.

The objects being auctioned are therefore of various types. Each work has had a unique history. Some may have been gazed upon and cherished through the years to this day, others may have been family heirlooms or may have lain undiscovered in a storage room and hence see their debut in this exhibition.

Our profound gratitude goes to the collectors who have generously donated items from their collections and may have parted with the objects they donate not without a little sadness tempered by the knowledge that it all goes for a good cause.

While my wife and I thank all those who made this auction possible through their hard work and constant dedication, we would like to urge all patrons to give in to the temptation of adding other objects to their collections and, in so doing, help us to help those persons and institutions that seek support from the Malta Community Chest Fund.

George AbelaPresident of Malta

Andrew Borg: Boffa Monument 2006Watercolour 50 cm x 35 cmEstimate: €250 - €450

Andrew Borg was attracted to the medium of wa-tercolour by the discipline it demands. Observation, prac-tice, perseverance, a sense of quality, good design work and a sense of what looks good all help to inch towards creating works in watercolour. Being self-critical, selective and finding the right inspiration is also essential to move forward. Andrew is inspired by views which, to his artist’s eyes, look good, or in some cases contain that particular twist which entices him to paint the scene. Most of the pieces hold no depth of meaning at all; they look good and so serve their purpose. Andrew has recently embarked on a more formal, disciplined approach towards acquiring the art skill set. This is based on the Charles Bargue Drawing Course, designed in the late 1800’s. While this is a method in mastering the drawing skills, he hopes it assists him in developing further in his artworks.

C.S. Lawrence: Towards RamlaAcrylic on canvas, 60 cm x 60 cmEstimate: €600 - €800

CS Lawrence works in an instinctively sensitive and compassionate style and through close observation produces evocative depictions of faces. Her artwork is produced in a unique combination of mix media collage and reveals her constant obsession to capture the unguarded beauty of emotional expression. From her first portrait at ten years of age, her work has been noted for its emotional depth and its story telling. Her faces express themselves in a language which is internationally intelligible because they speak about human endeavour. They pull on your heartstrings without saying a word. Lawrence progressively pushes the boundaries of her self-expression and after her experience of exhibiting in the UK for two consecutive years, her art, both in the form of her faces and her landscapes, is taking on an increasing boldness. Ever evolving, but always constant in its skill and sincerity, Lawrence’s art finds its way into the homes of art collectors who share her love of life.

Joseph Ellul Vincenti: UntitledClay SculptureEstimate: €500 - €600

Retired architect, chartered electrical engineer and once Enemalta Chairman, Joe’s attraction for clay derives from a life of construction and design. Clay, he says brings you close to heaven, because God became the first artist to use this medium when he created man. Joe draws on his past expertise in building houses and churches, cupolas and factories, to give shape to his clay. Working with clay is in a way not very different from working on the drawing board. When Joe went back to school some five years ago, sitting at benches with much younger pupils was great fun.

Joseph Ellul [email protected]

Under the capable tutorship of George Muscat, at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, he quickly mastered the properties of clay and the mystique of glazing. Joe’s work is quite varied. Some of his earlier stuff could be very humorous, with figures concocted out of clay and found material like cogs, rusty metal and bolts. Other work reflects his training in design as an architect, or his experimenting with various techniques, while later work reflects more sculpted material, three-dimensional buildings, landscapes and streetscapes.

Isabelle Borg (1959 – 2010): Musica è Mixed media on canvas, 114 cm x 86 cm, 1989Estimate: €500 - €800

Painter Isabelle Borg, who was known for her bold and expressive works, passed away in September of this year aged 51. The artistic community mourned the loss of the London-born artist who died after battling a degenerative lung disease which confined her to her Floriana home. Ms Borg studied painting at the Camberwell School of Art, London, and, after obtaining her Masters, she became a lecturer at the University of Malta and the Junior College. Apart from the various exhibitions of her works, she also contributed to local art literature through various publications. She exhibited her work in Malta and internationally. Following her demise, Vicki Ann Cremona, friend and colleague, said “The greatest thing I admired about Isabelle’s talent and personality was her boldness. As a painter, her stunningly bold style made her one of Malta’s greatest successful contemporary artists... she transmitted her own very daring and particular perception of her subjects, which put her in a class of her very own.”

Justine MB: The Silent StepInks and Mixed Media, Framed - W 64 cm x 45 cm Estimate: €250 - €350

“When painting, if you don’t work from life, life and that present moment itself will pass you by. Regardless of the subject, portrait, landscape, whatever, I do my best to maintain the spontaneity feeling of the painting.” Chev Emmanuel Fiorentino once wrote: “Saying that this short piece is being written by way of introducing the artistic talents of Justine MB is a misnomer, since this young artist has already given tangible indications of her abounding keenness for artistic expression... Justine MB continues to explore the human body through live models and ballerinas, but equally well she delves elsewhere with her sensitively-depicted landscapes. If there was in fact one particular quality in Justine MB’s exhibitions, which set me thinking about her bright prospects, it was her versatility in employing different media and in depicting various genres. Her nudes in particular possess that inner vibrancy which makes them more sensually attuned to the ‘landscape’ of the body. Through her treatment of the human body she manages to create movement from still images. In so doing her figures announce the resonant spark of life that inhabits them.”

Andrew Micallef: Clay SlopesOil on Canvas 50 cm x 70 cmEstimate: €800 - €1200

Andrew Micallef, born in 1969 and brought up in Haz-Zebbug, Malta, used to accompany his father on long walks in the countryside and rural areas. That instilled in him his first love for nature, particularly for birds. Constantly portraying birds enabled him to develop a style of painstaking detail, not only in the anatomy of the bird itself but also for the habitat of each and every species depicted. His first solo exhibition was in 1986 at St. John’s Co-Cathedral Annex in Valletta, entitled ‘Bird Studies’, followed by another show on the same subject in 1989 at the Natural History Museum in Mdina. Through the years he changed both subject and medium and started giving particular attention to our rich and unique architectural legacy. Triumphant gates, arches, auberges, chapels and allegorical coat of arms all became his main focus. The ideal medium for these chosen topics was pen and ink: through the articulate use of cross-hatching it creates an illusion of etching or engraving. Andrew Micallef is the designer of at least 8 sheets of stamps depicting endemic fauna and flora.

Antonio Mifsud: The Temptations of St. JeromeCold-cast resin, Height: 55cm (pedestal included)Breadth: 30 cm x 30 cmEstimate: €450 - €500 Sacred spaces is a collection of sculptures and paintings, which explore in detail the similarities between religion, Maltese Heritage and the artist’s perception of life. Each piece of work represents more than one possible way of interpreting this need, giving shape to his collective values, beliefs and religious perceptions. Academic artistic traditions are revived in Mifsud’s sculptures through the use of different media. Moreover he has created an original way how to interpret abstract decorative paintings including sculptured texture. Essentially a colourist, his finely layered and textured use of colour produces powerful images suggestive of land, sea and sky, wet within a semi-abstract that allow room for inner emotional landscape of both artist and spectator to emerge.

Godfrey Xuereb: Over the MoonCeramics, 35 cm high (free-standing)Estimate: €240 - €280

His professional career in education spans many years of successful and rewarding achievements both as a teacher and as an administrator in Malta’s Secondary Schools. As a dedicated educator, he has always heartily embraced the values of art and culture. In schools under his care, he would constantly strive to encourage his students to develop and express their varied artistic traits to the full. His will to express his personal artistic aptitude has been in the making for a long time. Retirement has opened a new chapter in Godfrey’s life and he now spends his free quality time hand-building ceramics inspired by nature and by Malta’s rich cultural heritage. Under the guidance of George Muscat (a locally popular ceramic artist), Godfrey’s passion flourished and today he is fast gaining reputation as an established ceramist on the island. The artist’s strongest line in ceramics is his hand-built sculptured murals depicting Maltese historical buildings and sites. His other flare is semi-abstract interpretation of nature.

Kenneth Zammit Tabona: Tender is the nightWatercolour - 61 cm x 46 cm Estimate: €800 - €1000

Donated by the High Commissioner of Malta in the UK, Joseph Zammit Tabona & Mrs Susan Zammit Tabona

Kenneth Zammit Tabona’s genre paintings are instantly recognisable as they are more than just images but idiosyncratic poems depicting glimpses into an idyllic world that has, like an ephemeral soap bubble, only just vanished into the irretrievable past. Zammit Tabona captures the moment vividly in colourful tableaux that are indelibly Mediterranean and which have become desiderata for any serious, established and aspiring collector of Melitan art.

1 case x 6 The Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte CollectionEstimate €380 - €450

2 bottles Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte 2000 Grand Cru Classe Pessac Leognan (€ 70.00 per btl) “One can’t say enough about this winery, which may still fly under the radar of most consumers. The fully mature 2000 displays gorgeous aromas of camphor, lead pencil shavings, unsmoked tobacco, plums, and black currants. With full body, a velvety texture, and beautiful weight, richness, and length, this superb wine should evolve; possibly improve for another 15 years. It’s a beauty!” 95/100 Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate.

2 bottles Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte 2003 Grand Cru Classe Pessac Leognan (€ 55.00 per btl) “The opulent, accessible 2003 offers a dense plum/ruby-tinged color and a big, sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, smoked herbs, lead pencil, and

subtle wood. It is a deep, fleshy, medium to full-bodied offering with low acidity, a plump, opulent texture, and a heady finish. Enjoy this beauty over the next 15+ years.” 92/100 Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate

2 bottles Ch. Smith Haut Lafitte 2005 Grand Cru Classe Pessac Leognan (€e 65.00 per btl) “Kudos to the Cathiard family, who acquired this once under-performing estate in 1990. They have spared no expense or effort in producing wines (both red and white) that are among the finest in Bordeaux in virtually every vintage. The 2001 red may not have as much power as the 2000, but it is very close in quality. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 13% Cabernet Franc, it was macerated for four weeks, enjoyed malolactic in barrel as well as stirring of the lees, and was bottled with minimal clarification. This elegant, stylish, deep ruby/purple-colored effort reveals notes of smoke, graphite, and red as well as black fruits in its perfumed, nicely evolved bouquet. With sweet flavors, medium body, outstanding concentration.”

1 case x 6 Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2005 5eme Grand Cru Classe PauillacEstimate €450 - €550

“The brilliant 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits classic Pauillac aromas and flavors of creme de cassis along with stony/floral notes. Proprietor Xavier Borie has created a wine that should rival the brilliant 1982, 1990, 1996, and 2000. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and superb length (a 40+ second finish), the purity of this beauty’s black currant fruit is something to behold. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.” 95/100 Robert Parker

1 case x 12 Clos de Loratoire 2006 Grand Cru Classe St EmilionEstimate €380 - €450

“A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is a surprisingly opulent, flamboyant, fleshy, soft crowd-pleaser displaying abundant amounts of smoked herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, espresso roast, chocolate, and toast. Full-bodied with superb concentration as well as a beautifully textured mouthfeel, this 2006 should drink well for 10-15+ years. Like all of the Neipperg estates, this wine’s capsule has a clever anti-fraud device, which I think will be increasingly employed by many French estates. This nearly 30-acre estate, which was purchased several years ago by Stephan von Neipperg (owner of Canon La Gaffeliere and La Mondotte), performed exceptionally well in 2006.” 91/100 Robert Parker

1 case x 12 Chateauneuf du Pape 2006 Domaine du Vieux TelegrapheEstimate €450 - €550

“The 2006 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape, which is aged only in foudre and bottled with minimal clarification, is a more masculine, muscular effort than most 2006s. Its dark ruby/purple color is followed by notions of the sushi seaweed wrapper, nori, interwoven with incense, lavender, pepper, and copious quantities of black cherry and raspberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, with moderate tannin, and good structure as well as depth, it will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for 15 or more years.” 92/100 Robert Parker

1 case x 1 Magnum Champagne Pol Roger 1995 VintageEstimate: €180 - €250

“A good, although fairly pale hue, and a tiny bead. Fresh nose; floral, acacia notes, with a nutty breadcrumb nuance. Full, creamy palate, with lovely weight, offset by fresh, sharp acidity. A firm mousse. An elegant style. Beautiful drinking now, until 2015+” 93/100 eRobertParker.Com

1 case x 6 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2 bottles each 1997/2000/2007Estimate: €350 - €450

1997 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port “Saturated black/purple-colored, with stunning aromatics of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, and iron, this spectacular vintage port is one of the stars of the vintage. Extremely full-bodied, with silky tannin, spectacular concentration and purity, multiple flavor levels, and an evolved, forward personality, this is an exquisite yet precocious 1997 vintage port. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030.” 96/100 Robert Parker

2000 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port “Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor’s 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.” 98/100 Robert Parker

2007 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port “The 2007 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port is a blend of multiple sites meant to express the house style in a great year. It displays a superb aromatic array of pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, blackberry, and floral notes. Dense, suave, and opulent on the palate, this is a mouth-filling, intense, layered wine that has superb grip and concentration. It will effortlessly age for 25+ years and still be delivering pleasure at age 50.” 95/100 Robert Parker

Double Magnum Chateau Carteau Cotes Daugay 2005 Saint Emilion Grand Cru Estimate: €180 - €220

This excellent Saint Emilion Grand Cru has a huge following world wide. It is owned by Mr Jacques Bertrand and his family. Besides making great wine Jacques has held many important positions in Bordeaux and France in general. He is today a council member of the Institute National des Appellation Controllee and the Premier Jurat of the Jurade de Saint Emilion. The 2005 vintage provided excellent weather conditions to grow wines that will benefit from cellaring. In double Magnum format it is estimated that this wine will be approachable to drink in 2015 but should continue to evolve for a further 10 years.

Chateau Gazin 2005, in original wooden case of 12Estimate: €750 - €950

An exuberant, sweet bouquet of caramelized black cherries and currants interwoven with tapenade, toasty oak, earth, and truffles soars from the glass of this dark purple-hued 2005. It is a rich, concentrated, full-bodied, impressive effort displaying well-integrated wood and unobtrusive acidity. This is the finest Gazin since the brilliant 2001. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.” 94/100 Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate The development of the Pomerol vineyard in the 12th century up to the French Revolution of 1789 around the commandary of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta is confirmed by very old documents from the Great Priory of Malta in Toulouse. The present day Château GAZIN, which was once a village in the 18th century, is located on the site of the hospital built by the Knights to host the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella.
