As we put to bed our final issue for

the year, we are looking at the world

with some apprehension. First Brexit,

then the USA Presidential election and

the possibility of countries becoming

“protectionist” in nature fuelled by fear

and misinformation. It seems to point

to a tough year ahead but life goes

on and we need to become adaptable

and creative. There are still projects

out there that needs to be fulfilled and

companies can use lull periods to train staff for the future uptake.

In my November’s First Words column, I had highlighted that there

were rumours of brands possibly being bought out or on possible

mergers. Since that column, we saw the acquisition of Camco by

L-Group and of course the bigger news of Samsung buying Harman.

I am certain we will be seeing a couple more transactions happening

in 2017. What will it all mean to the industry? To those that have

been acquired there will understandably be some trepidation on the

part of the employees. Some acquisitions are simply meant to kill off

competition but in our industry most of the time it is meant to make a

good product better. By aligning technologies and expertise, it might

mean a better product that customers are willing to pay for.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your

support. Thank you for inviting us to do exclusive coverage. Thank you

for taking time to show us your new solutions. Thank you for taking

the time to share your ideas with us.

Mi Max Launched With grandMA2

INDIA: Xiaomi, a privately owned Chinese electronics company headquartered in Beijing, recently launched its new smartphone Mi Max with a big event in New Delhi’s Nehru Stadium, India. The company sold over 60 million smartphones in 2014 and has over 8,000 employees, mainly in mainland China, India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Lighting designer Dinesh Verma used 1 x grandMA2 light for the event in New Delhi. “My design idea was to reflect the brand and its image and create a buzz for the new smartphone by combining the LED wall, lighting and sound to get a whole experience for the audience.”

Sahil Wadhwa, owner of Modern Stage Service, MA’s exclusive distributor in India, who provided the lighting and truss equipment for the event, commented: “Modern Stage Service has been a pioneer in the field of lighting and designing stagecraft equipment. Because of the intrinsic quality and superior performance our equipment has been in constant demand by the event companies, lighting designers, experts, theatre architects and others who are familiar with our performance. Especially MA products are highly sought after and perform as we expect them to. All our customers are very satisfied with these products.”

New Zealand Car Museum Joins The Qu

NEW ZEALAND: Southward Car Museum in New Zealand recently purchased an Allen & Heath Qu-16

rackmount digital mixer as part of an upgrade to its events audio equipment.

The renowned museum houses a collection of over 400 vehicles, as well as three aircraft, and hosts various events from balls and festivals to conferences.

“We need to offer our clients a professional service, including good quality audio equipment. The A&H mixer is a no brainer – it’s easy to operate from setup to pack down,” comments Levi Hampton, booking & events coordinator at the Southward Museum Trust.

Staging at the venue alters depending on the type of event and its requirements. The Qu mixer’s simple dSnake CAT5 connection allows the venue to install the console wherever it is needed.

“For me, Qu’s greatest assets are the touchscreen interface, which makes tasks such as EQ-ing and routing very easy, and the simplicity of the console, which makes for a much more efficient pack in and load out time,” concludes Hampton.

Altman Phoenix And Pegasus Debut In Singapore

SINGAPORE: The Theatre Practice, the longest-standing professional bilingual theatre group in Singapore and also the earliest group to offer arts education in the Republic, recently moved to a new home. The building comprises of a block of old and beautifully renovated Chinese shop houses which accommodate not only The Practice Space black box theatre, but also the administration offices and a rehearsal space. The Practice Space is a fully adaptable space of approximately 225 square meter with a grid height of 5.5 meters and flexible seating for up to 120 audience. Project Manager Bee Bee Lee, had a difficult task on her hands when deciding the route for the stage lighting system for The Practice Space. The shop houses are located in an older part of Singapore with limited electrical power to the buildings. Air conditioning obviously took priority, conventional tungsten fixtures and associated dimmers were not an option, so Lee decided to go for a total LED rig. Part of her criteria, as this space is also used for educational purposes, was that she wanted to encourage young lighting designers to continue to make their own colour filter choices for ‘conventional’ colour temperature fixtures. Working closely with the team at Pacific Lighting (Singapore) Pte Ltd, she finally chose the Altman Phoenix 250W profile and the

new Pegasus 6” and 8” fresnel 3000K LED fixtures, in addition to Spectra Star PAR RGBA fixtures for flexibility. Her control choice was the user friendly Zero 88 FLX console. Lee is thoroughly delighted with the Altman system, commenting that she was highly impressed with the light output, beam quality, and smooth dimming curve. “They do the job I want, and more” said Lee. Pacific Lighting (Singapore) Pte Ltd is the exclusive distributor of Altman Lighting Inc. for the region.

Processing Power Makes DiGiCo Perfect For Sing China Final

CHINA: With a live audience of 80,000, the recent final of the first series of Sing China was a production on a massive scale and needed an audio system that provided total reliability and sufficient processing power. To fulfil both these requirements, a total of nine DiGiCo digital mixing consoles were specified by the show’s broadcaster, Zhejiang Television. Sing China is based on The Voice of Holland, the concept being to find new singing talent (solo or duets) drawn from public auditions. In China, the show stopped using foreign copyright in 2016, changed its name to Sing China, and became one of the most popular singing competitions in the country.

Page 14: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

NEWSE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 14The final was held at the Birds Nest, which was originally designed as the main stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the Olympic Green Village in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, and deployed Four DiGiCo SD7s with an EX007 extender, two SD5s, an SD10, and an SD9.

“Zhejiang Television chose to use DiGiCo consoles because of their powerful processing ability, stability and unrivalled operating system that can handle anything that happens – either planned or unplanned – in a live mixing situation,” says Wen Hao Lee, on-site supporting engineer for Rightway Audio Consultants Ltd, DiGiCo’s Chinese distributor. “As well as their processing ability, both the SD7 and SD5 have enough channels to deal with the sheer scale of a performance such as this and the EX007 allowed the mix engineer to mix and listen to the acoustics of the show from any position that worked for him. Having two SD7s handling the PA gave better control for the show and meant that two engineers could work together at the same time. They also found the ability to share racks particularly useful.” As well as providing equipment, Rightway supplies technical support for all its customers whenever needed. “We have a 24/7 hotline to solve any issues our customers might have,” says Eric Liew, Rightway Product Specialist. “We also provide an on-site and off-site repairs service, which is one reason why our customers find us dependable, reliable, and timely. For a show like the final of Sing China, this kind of complete service is vitally important. DiGiCo’s technical support team was also available during the show, actively assisting our on-site engineer whenever required. “The show was a complete success, the DiGiCo’s worked perfectly throughout and we are extremely pleased that we have a very satisfied customer.”

Although helming a newly formed company, OneCircle’s founder and managing partner Hikam Ali explains that he is more than familiar with Outline’s product range, as he worked for Outline’s previous distributor in Singapore.

OneCircle has decided to concentrate solely on Outline Audio, without compromising its standards handling other brands, and is therefore fully committed to solely promoting Outline.

He adds, “By demonstrating portable, live sound and fixed install systems in schools, places of worship and other venues, we’re making

sure the systems are being heard, and we believe that potential clients will be convinced that Outline offers the best of its class in all fields once they have heard its products properly.”

In July 2016, OneCircle supported a pro-audio workshop held at the Malaysian Mega Chinese Methodist Church. “The 17 churches that attended during the week for the demonstrations in Petaling Jaya were really impressed,” explained OneCircle Director/Partner Miqael Das.

“We are committed to education and helping users in the audio community enhance their technical skills and know-how.”

Consultant and trainer Robert Soo furthered: “When I was approached by OneCircle, I was happy to use their Outline range of loudspeakers, power amplifiers and processors as demonstration equipment and teaching aids in my workshop, as I have used Outline systems in several projects and was satisfied with their performance and quality.”

“However, we are equally happy demonstrating the speaker systems to individuals on a one-to-one basis,” added Das. “The products all have four-year warranties and we ensure round-the-clock technical and software support from Singapore. Very shortly, we’ll be promoting the GTO and GTO C-12 systems, as soon as we have inventory.”

A key brand at world level on the sound reinforcement sector, Outline has several patents to its credit and has received various awards for product innovation and design excellence at the industry’s top expos. The company’s CEO Giorgio Biffi stated: “Hikam, Miqael and the team are fully committed to promoting and supporting Outline in Singapore and Brunei. AV Stumpfl Upgrades Wings Vioso RX Workflow

AV Stumpfl® has made significant upgrades to Wings Vioso RX media server platform to enable best image quality and multi-user workflow. Show creators can realize their vision designing even more efficient and creative! Highlights include:

New workflow for ultra-large content management and transferDuring live events, working files are backed up whilst everything is made ready and approved for playout. Working with uncompressed image sequences requires consideration of things beyond the bare playback performance. If large files from creative agencies or clients arrive at the last minute it can be very time consuming to transfer large content from point A to point B.

Wings Vioso RX has addressed the problem of working with uncompressed image sequences by building the whole workflow to assist with last minute content management and transfer.

On top of that AV Stumpfl’s hardware is equipped with Dual 10 GBit network cards to ensure fast and redundant data transfer, and AV

Page 30: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

Stumpfl offers certified Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems and 10 GBit switches for flawless operation.

The data management and transfer workflow of Wings Vioso RX software does not require all data to be physically copied onto the “Master” server. Instead, the data can be copied - either by a third party or agency - to the NAS and assigned as “Proxy Objects” in the timelines. From there, the individual contents can be pulled directly by “Slave Servers.”

Multiple operator collaborationUsing Wings Vioso RX, multiple operators can collaborate on the same media server outputs in real-time and is ideal for large-scale and demanding media applications.

Real-time pixel mappingLastly, AV Stumpfl adds a powerful, real-time pixel mapping engine to deal with displays of different resolutions, physical dimensions and shapes. The mapping matrix can be imported from a CSV table and edited and applied in real time.

SGM Adds G-4 Wash To its G-range Moving HeadsThe G-4 Wash comprises red, green, blue, amber and mint LEDs that mix directly in the light source. Additionally, it has a dichroic enhancer that creates a deep blue (Congo blue), delivering a very saturated black light effect. With a CRI of more than 90 (typically 93), the G-4 Wash delivers the most amazing colour rendering of any wash light on the market today. It is not only powerful in colours but also impressive in white.

Page 42: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

Equipped with a Fresnel lens, the G-4’s optical system is designed to deliver a staggering output for a fixture with such a small footprint, and equally perfect colour mixing with a completely even field with no hotspot. The durable, IP65-rated exterior of G-4 Wash and the built-in dehumidifier ensure that the fixture is kept free of externally induced impact on internal optics and light source unit, such as smoke fluid, dust and dirt. Therefore, the G-4 Wash is ideal for outdoor applications and is practically maintenance-free.

With an impressive zoom range of 9°-76°, the G-4 Wash enables designers to create tight beams and powerful washes, as well as everything in-between. Because of its unlimited colour options and unique colour rendering capabilities, the G-4 Wash is highly suitable for multiple applications such as theaters, concerts, cruise ships, exhibitions, architectural installations or any application where high output, stunning colours and dramatic colour effects are desired.

Barco In The Rental & Staging BusinessBarco, a global technology company, designs and develops networked visualization products for the Entertainment, Enterprise, and Healthcare markets. The company is also actively involved in the Rental & Staging segment, offering a plethora of solutions. ETA speaks to Mark Bultinck, Barco VP APAC on the current trends and future expectations.

What is the current trend in terms of projection requirements in the rental & staging business?

The rental & staging sector continues to be very creative in the way they use projectors. In general, one could say that the R&S market is looking for robustness, modularity, ease of use and fast setup time.

R&S also follows the two main technology trends in the industry, which are:

1) 4K: We have seen a whirl of headlines about 4K, but it is important to separate fact from fiction. The bottom line for most end-users and/or R&S companies is that they do not need this high level of resolution, especially not for projection mapping where the viewing distance is high. For corporate events, Barco has recently introduced the F90-4K13 projector, which provides 4K resolution at up to 13k

Page 51: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

lumens of laser-powered brightness. For concert and live events, we have our new HDX 4K20 projector, which is based on the proven and market-leading HDX platform. In addition, we have our Events Master image portfolio that has been updated and renewed to support 4k.

2) Laser projection: Laser projectors will likely start outpacing traditional lamp units over the next 2 to 3 years. Not only are laser projectors more reliable, but Barco high-end laser projectors, such as the HDF W30LP Flex, provide more brightness combined with a flexible light output that can be configured and optimized depending on the requirements. Barco offers a total package to the rental & staging industry - projectors, LED panels, media servers and presentation switchers and even immersive sound (IOSONO). Tell us how these solutions work together to create an experience for the audience.

Barco is indeed the only player in the industry able to provide a full suite of reliable, easy-to-integrate and seamless AV solutions that enable immersive audio & video experiences.

Our product portfolio starts where the design of the show begins. Offering some very unique features, Barco media servers are fully integrated visual production systems that enable video professionals to easily evolve their show from idea to realization. Allowing you to quickly and easily set up, preview and manage your show environment, they form the perfect connection between your creative ideas and the Barco display systems that bring them to life.Between the creative content and the displays systems, we find the Barco Event Master series, which includes the E2, S3-4K, E2 Jr and S3-4K Jr. As shows grow more complex, stagers are looking to go beyond presentation switchers and move into screen management systems. The Event Master series is a collection of processors that allow the user to pick and choose the right size for each event. Because the systems can be linked for expansion, you can use the pieces separately for smaller events, and then bring them all together for larger events. Not only is the system modular from the view of the processors, but the inputs, outputs, and processing are also modular for future upgrades and field serviceability.

On the projector side, Barco offers a complete and state-of-the-art portfolio of lamp and laser-based projectors that ensure maximum reusability, modular upgrades, consistent serviceability and operability to maximize user satisfaction across products. The Barco projector portfolio currently offers some of the brightest laser projectors on the market at up to 30k lumens for R&S and up to 60k lumens for fixed installations, theaters and cinemas.

In addition to projectors, Barco also offers high resolution and flexible ultra-thin LED canvases all powered by the same LED image processors

To complete the immersive experience with sound, Barco latest 3D sound technology, IOSONO, comes with standard audio interfaces and remote control software that can synchronize with the media content. IOSONO is scalable and is able to adapt to the preferences and the characteristics of the venue.

INTERVIEWE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 53

Projection mapping seems to be on the rise - do you agree? If yes, please give us your opinion why this is so.

Projection mapping is really cool! It’s fresh, it wows audiences, it creates a buzz and can quickly go viral. It’s also breaking the live events barrier as permanent installations and public art projects are popping up as experience décor for hotels, malls, and nightclubs.

Market research indicates that projection mapping and 3D projections like the one that was done for the 40-year anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam are currently considered the most unique ways to capture the attention of the audience.

What makes a memorable projection mapping experience? Which Barco solutions fit this space?

The key to crafting a memorable project mapping experience lies in the quality of the projection. Projection mapping must deliver depth, immersion and unprecedented image quality to create the “wow” effect. With Barco large venue projectors and their built-in blending and warping capabilities, our media servers, screen management and the IOSONO 3D sound, the audience can really enjoy an immersive and unforgettable experience.

Are you able to share how much of Barco’s business is in the rental & staging business in terms of revenue percentage? Do you see this growing, and if so, by how many percentage points?

The rental & staging business comprises more than 15% of Barco Entertainment turnover worldwide. R&S market growth is very much dependent on the region and market segment, as the R&S business covers a wide range of different projects and events – from spectacular opening ceremonies to concerts, corporate events, sponsored events, sales conferences, product launches, etc.

Page 54: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

INTERVIEWE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 54

At Barco Asia this year, we are thrilled with the doubling of the sales of our Event Master series. I estimate that the overall R&S market is growing at an average pace of between 1% and 5% annually.

What do you think are the key challenges that rental & staging companies face in Asia?

The biggest challenge is creating new and unique experiences that have a big impact on audiences. R&S companies in Asia are faced with the constant challenge of having to deliver these bigger and better experiences using the same amount of resources. They therefore require systems that are robust, easy to set up & program, and fast. These requirements were taken into account when we developed our Event Master series, as it allows the end-user to configure the system and program the show offline, prior to showing up for the event, by using our simulator. The operator can even work with the end client to design the show offline before any of the screens have been set up or the first truck is unloaded. Once they get on-site, the operator uploads the configuration and then they can immediately start to fine tune the show and be ready for rehearsal.

Are you able to share with us what you think will be the next big trend or technology in relation to projectors specifically targeted at the rental & staging industry?

In the short term, it will be mainly about 4k resolution and laser projection. However, we will start seeing rising demand for higher resolutions, as broadcasters in Japan are already talking about 8k resolution. With the introduction of laser, we also expect the demand for higher brightness in a compact projector body to increase. In addition, as quality, bandwidth and latency improve, the R&S industry will be moving to AV over IP.

INTERVIEWE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 55With technology evolving very fast, we at Barco are committed to developing products and that are both modular and upgradeable in order to maximize the lifespan and ROI for our R&S customers.

Canon Projectors Make Statement At Singapore Bowling Federation

Bowling has always been a popular form of sport and recreation in Singapore. When the first public bowling centre opened its doors at Jackie’s Bowl Orchard in 1965, there was a 12-hour

waiting list of curious members of the public, eager to try their hand at the new sport. The ensuing years saw a bowling boom in Singapore, with bowling centres cropping up in neighbourhoods across the island.

Even though there are fewer bowling centres today, the sport itself still retains its appeal.

A New HomeRecognised by the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore, Singapore Bowling Federation (SBF), or Singapore Bowling for short, is the main authority promoting the sport and nurturing new talent. On October 2015, SBF opened a brand new 38-lane bowling centre at the Temasek Club along Rifle Range Road, making it the largest bowling facility in Singapore.

To SBF’s national bowlers, however, the centre is more than just a fancy new facility. “We’ve never had a place we called home,” said Jazreel Tan, champion of the PWBA Lubbock Open 2015. “We were

Page 58: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

INTERVIEWE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 58

always moving around, all over Singapore.” Fellow national bowler New Hui Fen, the winner of the 2016 PWBA Smithfield Tour Championship, added, “Everything is more convenient [because] the meetings are here, the office is here. If we need to settle [anything], we can do it all.”

A Brand New LookAt the official opening, the centre showcased 19 Canon XEED WX520 Projectors on site, which really bring the bowling venue to life. Shirley Wong, the centre manager in charge of running the facility on a day-to-day basis, tells us more.

Why does the new bowling facility require that many projectors? We are more than just a bowling centre! For example, we use the projectors during community or corporate events. If there is an event happening we can project images or videos. If there is, say, a travel show, the event organisers may want to project travel destinations across the venue. It is a purely aesthetic decision to have them installed.

Page 59: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

INTERVIEWE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 59

Before adopting the Canon projectors, what were some of the major pain points or issues that the organisation faced? The obvious point is that most bowling facilities do not have this many projectors. We used to have to manually set things up on our own, and had to find suitable spots around various venues. Even then, usage was fairly restrictive. After adopting the 19 projectors, all we have to do is to turn them on, and the visuals will be projected across all 38 lanes. If it is a crowded corporate event, this just makes things a whole lot simpler.

How did the projectors help SBF become more productive? Before we had the projectors, the organisers had to print banners out, bring them to the centre and then manually install them. Obviously, this is not the most practical option. With the projectors, all they have to do these days is to send us a high-resolution image, and we can project it straight onto the walls with great image quality. It cuts down the logistical costs and makes the venue more visually appealing overall.

What attracted you to Canon’s projectors in the first place? The main reason we decided on Canon’s XEED WX520 projectors is that they are able to project brightness of up to 5,200 lumens, WXGA+ resolution, all while maintaining the sharpness and colours of the visuals. For such a big space and the ambience we want to create here, we feel that Canon’s offerings make the most sense.

Shanghai this year reflect that the industry is welcoming the new changes of our show. As the organiser, we will continue to upgrade our comprehensive platform in tandem with the needs and challenges of the market and uphold the fair’s outstanding position in the Asian pro audio and lighting industry.”

New show concept caters to evolving industry demandsAs a highlight of Prolight + Sound Shanghai, the debut of the Recording and Production Zone has proved to be a timely addition to the show in response to the burgeoning demands of the industry. Numerous inspiring knowledge-sharing sessions also complemented the zone, offering attendees forward-thinking insights into the world of recording and production.

Superlux Enterprise Development (Shanghai) Co Ltd, a loyal exhibitor of the show since 2003, thinks the new zone has contributed to the expansion of market potential in the recording and technology sectors. Yu Lan Chen, Marketing Manager of the company commented: “The Recording and Production Zone was a tremendous success. Visitors have shown great interest in our top-notch products and this shows a demand for recording and production technologies. A special zone

like this is what the industry needs – it acts as a reference point and provides guidance to exhibitors on how to expand their market opportunities.”

Another frequent exhibitor, Harman also expressed their optimism towards the positive impact of the zone to the industry. David Lu, Deputy General Manager of the company said: “It was a wise decision to designate an area for the recording and production sector. As a lot of new products and innovations are emerging in the market, many visitors rely on this zone to learn about the latest advancements.”

Beyerdynamic GmbH & Co. KG, who came to the fair to showcase their drum microphones, was happy with the global business leads the zone has created for them. Jason Zeng, the company’s Sales Director of Greater China said: “We have achieved excellent results. Since this is a product-specific area, it provided us with a better and more professional environment for business networking. We have been busy talking with visitors from local and overseas markets.”

Shi Hao Wang, General Manager of B.W Studios who was a first-time visitor of the show praised the zone as a platform for him to explore

new products in the recording and production sector. He remarked: “I came specifically for this new zone and discovered many interesting equipment that I wasn’t able to find in other places. There is a high demand for products like these in China and it’s good to finally have a professional platform that connects us to the many recording and production companies.”

Sound @ PLSS Studio, a popular area which displayed some of the latest sound production products from renowned brands, was also well-received by attendees. Ryan Schaad, Experienced Audio Professional from Shanghai Vancouver Film School was one of the many visitors who enjoyed an immersive sound experience there. He stated: “I was impressed by this studio as I could try out the sound equipment and better understand how these cutting-edge technologies work. The products here are definitely top-notch, and the opportunity to test the quality of these products was invaluable.”

Relocation of halls conducive to an ideal business environment Many exhibitors also welcomed the decision to relocate to halls N1 – N3. The larger exhibiting space in the new halls enabled them to fully make use of their booths to showcase their innovations. It also created

a more spacious area and welcoming atmosphere for them to conduct business, which in turn benefited both exhibitors and visitors.

Returning exhibitor Soundking was pleased with this arrangement as it brought a large variety of new customers to their booth. Marketing Manager of the company, Chi Li commented: “The relocation has played an essential role in enhancing the crowds here. The new hall allowed larger exhibiting space for us to display our products and have meetings. Our booth overflowed with new buyers every day and we were able to meet many local and international wholesalers, agents and representatives of large projects. We are content with the results.”

Fair continues to receive strong industry support and high-calibre visitorsFor both exhibitors and visitors, the new changes to this edition were beneficial in propelling their businesses. This explained why the show continued to attract high-quality visitors and some of the biggest names in the pro audio and lighting field to attend, including 797Audio, Ableton, AKG, Antari, Apogee, Audiocenter, Beyerdynamic, Christie, DGX, DJ Power, DPA, ETC, Fidek, Focusrite, GIS, GLP, Harman, Jolly, Kling & Freitag, KRK, Maquinas Iberica, Nexo, Novation, Redx, Rupert Neve, SAE, sE Electronics, SE Audiotechnik, Shure,

Martin Audio Equips Two Tokyo Venues With One System

JAPAN

Provisions made to enable venue to switch between live bands and nightclub use

Two new live venues were recently opened in Toyko — at Sarugakucho,

Shibuya. One is the Live venue, Space Odd, while the other is the nightclub, Sankeys TYO, which takes its name from the original venue in Manchester UK, which later set up in Ibiza. The unusual feature is that both Space Odd and Sankeys TYO are located at the same place and are equipped with a cutting edge Martin Audio loudspeaker system.

Naoki Shimizu, CEO of Creativeman Productions Co. Ltd. Takes up the story. A well-known organizer of Japanese music festivals such as Summer Sonic, he had heard about the impending closure of the previous nightclub and decided to develop a permanent location for his company to showcase live entertainment for the first time.

He approached MSI Japan to supply the sound system and Takashi ‘Kon’ Imaoka from Martin Audio distributor Audio Brains was placed in charge of the project. Shimizu made two stipulations: that the sound should be mainly for live performance, but could also provide an immersive nightclub sound. Kon and his team proposed several different brands, in different configurations, from which Martin Audio was selected.

Page 70: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

PROJECTSE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 70

The main speaker system comprises three MLA Compact and MLX subwoofers, on the special wheel-board frame for each side of the stage, and XD15 and WS218X for rear left and right. Stage side fills consists of XD15 and WS18X, along with ten LE1200 floor monitors, giving Martin Audio complete control of the signal chain (including amplification).

The second important factor was that the venue had to be switchable between live bands and nightclub use. Physically, the main speaker and rear speakers set on the wheel-board frame, could be selected, and the casters moved accordingly. And from a technical perspective, MLA Compact can be quickly optimized between the two different preset profiles via Martin Audio’s proprietary VU-NET software. They also established synchronicity between the sound and visual / lighting effects.

Naoki said how delighted he was with the result. “I’m thrilled with this place,” he said. “This is not Shibuya, Daikanyama or Ebisu (each a place name in Tokyo) but simply ‘THE Place’. Previously, it was a popular nightclub, and before that it was a flower market. I totally love this place including its history, also.” He said that with a reputation to preserve as professional event organisers, Creativeman would accept no compromise — and that this was truly innovative.

Now Sankeys TYO is also quickly becoming a popular and attractive destination in Tokyo, offering special special show from world-leading dance exponents such as Kaskade and Zedd from Germany.

Electro-Voice Loudspeakers Fill Karbala Olympic Stadium With Superb Sound

IRAQ

Stadium represents the largest Dante system that APCO Electronics has designed and installed

The recently opened Karbala Olympic Stadium in Iraq is a 30,000-seat venue designed to host major sports, music, religious and youth events. Audio for the project was provided

by Baghdad-based APCO Electronics, which provided acoustics design and participated in the actual installation as well. The company chose a sound system from Electro-Voice, creating a multi-zone digital audio system based around the IRIS-Net system control and supervising software and Electro-Voice EVH-1152 horn-loaded loudspeakers. The selected sound system stands for reliability, superior sound quality and scalability to future requirements. In addition, Electro-Voice amplifiers, microphones and wireless systems were also utilized.

The primary system requirement was that the sound system would meet FIFA football standards, which require 92 percent direct coverage

Page 73: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

and high intelligibility, with a Speech Transmission Index (STI) of 0.50 or higher. The installed system exceeds those standards, delivering 95 percent coverage with an outstanding STI (Speech Transmission Index) rating of 0.80, indicating excellent speech clarity. Next to public address announcements, the system should also be used for voice alarm and evacuation purposes.

Using EASE simulation software, the APCO team developed a design based on the Electro-Voice EVH-1152 loudspeaker system, a two-way 15-inch horn-loaded design available in six dispersion patterns. For the specific grandstand angles at Karbala Olympic Stadium, APCO used 24-each of 60x40-degree and 90x90-degree coverage patterns. Paired together, this combination provides direct, full-range coverage to all seating locations, including the difficult corner areas. In addition, two EVH-1152 loudspeaker systems with 90x90-degree dispersion are deployed individually at either end of the field to deliver audio onto the playing surface as needed.

The entire sound system is networked together using Electro-Voice N8000 Dante-enabled DSP matrix controllers and powered by Electro-Voice CPS series amplifiers with RCM-810 remote control modules. The N8000 from Electro-Voice provides complete system routing and

control via graphical user interface in IRIS-Net software. The main loudspeaker system is divided into four zones, each with its own N8000 from Electro-Voice and either three or four amplifiers, with the east side zones requiring and extra amplifier to feed the field speakers. All amplifiers are connected to their associated N8000 via a gigabit Ethernet switch to handle signal routing, with redundant connectivity to ensure a reliable digital network. A fifth N8000 is stationed in the stadium’s main control room, and acts as the master unit for the entire system, routing the audio to each of the four individual zones. APCO programmed the signal processing core to handle all required audio sources, including microphones, PC-based streaming audio, emergency notifications and scoreboard audio.

Karbala Olympic Stadium represents the largest Dante system that APCO Electronics has designed and installed. Thus, the feeling of accomplishment was strong when the APCO team finally heard the Iraq national anthem being played through the Electro-Voice system at the opening ceremony. That feeling was reinforced shortly after the event when APCO received calls from the Minister of Youth and Sport, and from local broadcaster Ishtar Media, thanking them for the outstanding audio quality.

dLive Employed At Traditional Indian Dance Festival

INDIA

dLive works flawlessly over the 10 days event

Indian PA company, Stagecraft, recently employed its new dLive digital mixing system at the huge Dildar Dandiya dance festival, held in the city of Gujarat in Surat, known as ‘Land of the

Festivals’.

Organised by Coconut Events, the 10-day festival was staged in the Golden Memories Dome, and attracted 12,000 guests. Renowned Indian folk singers, Kirtidan Gadhvi, Nisha Barot and Jetal Soni, performed every day.

The organisers appointed pro rental company, Stagecraft, to manage the challenging brief. Stagecraft had recently purchased a second dLive system from Allen & Heath’s distributor, Sun Infonet, comprising the flagship S7000 Surface with DM64 MixRack, to join its existing S3000/DM48 system. The S7000/DM64 system was selected as the FOH and monitor mixer for the festival, managing a spectrum of instruments such as 8 dhols, 6 drums, 5 floor drums, 1 kick drum, Indian acoustic percussions, bass, guitar, banjo, saxophone, clarinet, melodica, and keyboards, totalling 64 inputs and 27 outputs.

The MixRack was positioned on stage, connected to the Surface at FOH and a laptop running the dLive Director app, which was used as a monitor mixer.

“dLive worked flawlessly for 10 consecutive days. The flexibility of the dLive surface and complete open architecture allowed me to customise my own surface. The built in features, such as dynamic EQs, multi-band compressor and sub harmonic synth, made the job easier, and I could feel and hear each and every instrument. dLive has become my default console for any event,” says Pintu, system engineer & director of Stagecraft.

Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon’s Official Opening

THAILAND

Company goes through hurdles to ensure a memorable outcome

MahaNakhon is a luxury mixed-use skyscraper located in the Silom/Sathon central business district of Bangkok, Thailand and was opened in late August 2016. It is Bangkok's Tallest

Building with a height of 314.2m featuring 77 floors. The official opening ceremony of this impressive building took place on 26 August 2016.

Page 79: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

LIVEE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 79

To ensure that the building had an equally impressive opening ceremony, Fresh Air, an event management agency worked in tandem with the organiser for the ceremony, One Ball Co., Ltd and appointed Lightsource to help them turn their vision into reality. It was a tall order indeed! and Lightsource pulled it off brilliantly.

The objective with the opening ceremony was to highlight that MahaNakhon being the new tallest building in Thailand is the new landmark for the new generation. Of course the PR value was to ensure that the opening ceremony was the talk of the town and to subtly promote the building as being prestigious. According to Lightsource the idea of using the interactive lighting show is new to Thailand which was expected to excite and surprise the public – this was certainly achieved.

The ConceptLightsource had to create a lighting show that would capture the imagination of the public. The height of the building provided an opportunity to showcase a lighting programme that would not be obscured by other nearby buildings.

Page 80: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

LIVEE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 80

The building itself has a remarkable design with pixel style construction, which came from the idea of the Jenga game. Lightsource decided that the emphasis of the lighting would be on specific areas, which were the pixel parts and the wash will be mainly from the inside of the building. In that aspect the lighting was divided into three parts – the first part was the wash lighting fixtures that illuminated the building from the inside; the second part was the lighting fixtures that were used

in the balcony of the building and the final part was in relation to the Search lights that were placed outside the building as well as on the roof top of the building.

“We were able to do the wash from inside the building because the building facade is constructed with glass. The glass silicone latex protectors were not peeled off yet which was great for us as it gave us the unique opportunity to wash the building from the inside. The latex protector makes the light stay in the space, makes it brighter, and does not make the lights disappear in the air. Only some of the fixtures were fixed on the outside, which were the Searchlight 7k and some city lights, especially for washing the building from the bottom to the top, whereas the rest were from the inside of the building,” said Norasate Somboonwong, Operations Director, Lightsource.

The ChallengesThe challenges were multiple to say

Page 81: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

E T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 81LIVE

the least. The unpredictable weather was one main challenge and the ceremony was held during what is considered a rainy period in Bangkok. The other was that the building was still going through the interior design phase which made the job that more difficult.

To protect the fixtures against the rain. Lightsource simply covered them with waterproof canvas. There were also fixtures placed on the balcony of the building as well. Lightsource used steel slings to further hold the fixtures in place to prevent them from moving. During the event, Lightsource also placed staff at every floor to check on the safety aspect of all the fixtures.

Lighting fixtures were also placed in the interior of the building and these were protected with covers from the ongoing interior design construction dust.

Considering that interior design work was on-going, Lightsource staff had to also contend with sharing the lifts and limited spaces, which made it time consuming to bring the fixtures to their respective spaces. “At any one time there are about 2000 workers in the building and as would be expected there were also many objects obstructing the space of the fixtures,” said Norasate. “Everyday we needed to assign a team to survey from the roof top 78th floor until the basement 1st floor to see if the fixtures were still in the respective space that we had placed them and if there’s any problem that may have occurred on-site which had to be solved.”

On-siteSince the opening ceremony was being held whilst the interior design work was still on-going and Lightsource staff had to access the building, all Lightsource staff had to undergo safety training before they could work within the building. A total of 70 personnel were involved in this project. “Our priority was the safety of our personnel and we had to ensure extra steps were taken so that no one was in danger of injuring himself or herself,” commented Norasate.

Page 82: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

E T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 82LIVE

“We divided the team into four. Each team had the same job to do in the same time but in different parts of the building to save the time. Our team used 10 days to setup, check all the system and make it ready. Each day we also conducted a debriefing where any problems encountered were highlighted for us to take action.

We took another four days before the opening ceremony for programming and rehearsing all the cues. This is the biggest lighting show on the tallest building in Thailand’s history. Many photographers were taking photographs since the testing system began. As the building can be seen with bare eyes from many places all over Bangkok and the province nearby, this made the project more enticing to the public and it quickly became the talk of the town. We on our part had to ensure that we delivered accordingly.”

Control Centre and CablingLightsource used cabling to connect all the lighting fixtures. For each 10-15 floors, the lights were connected to one set of network. Lightsource used the 4-channel Neutrik OpticalCON QUAD 200m high quality cables to connect all the system together. The data signals from the cables were then sent through to the MA Lighting NPU processor

Page 83: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

E T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 83LIVE

and Enttec MK2 where the signals were converted into DMX for easier control and programming.

“The hardest part of laying the fiber optic cables was the fact that we had to lay them across 4 road lanes, pass the sky train station to the roof of the opposite building within 3 hours before the sky train service opens,” highlighted Norasate.

The light show was of course accompanied by music. To run the perfect show, synchronize time code using SMPTE TIME CODE signal was implemented. Again the signal cable was wired from the FOH stage across the road to the opposite building at the roof, where the control centre was.

Creating the Light ShowLightsource in-house 3D box service was engaged to help create the light show. Using the Wysiwyg R37 software from Cast-soft, Lighsource could show the client a pre-visualization of the light show programe. “The 3D Lighting Visualizer was very important and helpful for this project. We used it from first process until the show date. The 3D visualizer enables us to programme the light show virtually regardless of it being day or night time. We had to create the building model floor by floor in the Sketch up programme. Then we imported it to Wysiwyg to fix the light plot and program.

The Wysiwyg R37 software programme is very stable and well developed and our staff have much experience working on the software. This enabled us to show to the client a fairly accurate look as to how the light effects and show will be displayed on the actual day. This was then brought down to site and implemented effectively without too much hassle,” commented Norasate.

Day of ReckoningOn show day, on cue, it poured, so the show time was postponed for an hour, for the rain to stop. This was anticipated by the team. Lightsource plan was to turn on and run all the system and have the show ready within 30 minutes of getting the go-ahead but as the team

Page 84: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

E T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 84LIVE

had planned wisely, they were able have it ready within 10 minutes. Unfortunately, there was still a strong drizzle during the show but all the fixtures and the system worked 100 % properly and effectively to deliver a fascinating light show to the public.

The main light show was only 5 minutes but it was the key attraction. This was then complemented with a show on a stage set-up in front of the building, where famous artistes and a well known orchestra from Thailand performed. The wash lights inside the building were left on for an hour after the event as a lingering memory to the day’s activities.

Why these lighting fixtures?“We have many brands in our inventory. We make it a point to always visit lighting exhibitions in order to gain knowledge about each brand. We use to test them at the booth in the exhibitions to compare their strength and weaknesses such as CRI, body, weight or warehouse stock. So we are well aware of which brand of fixtures are good for the different type of jobs we do. So we choose our lighting fixtures based on our experience and the confidence that it will be able to deliver what was expected for that specific job,” said Norasate.

What did Lightsource learn from doing this project? We learned that good teamwork and having a proper action plan is very important. If we have good team work with good plan, everything will turn out excellently. This also means preparing for the unexpected and doing proper groundwork to understand the challenges and how best to mitigate the challenges and ensuring everyone knows their role.

Hexogon Solution Illuminates New Taipei City With Spectacular Projection Mapping Show

TAIWAN

This marks the debut of Boxer 4K30s for the biggest projection mapping performance ever held in Taiwan

Christie’s rental staging partner Hexogon Solution Pte Ltd has ignited the Christmas spirit by delivering spectacular visuals that captivated thousands of spectators who turned up for the

official lighting up ceremony of the highly-anticipated “Christmasland in New Taipei City” event on November 19.

The stunning projection mapping performances, which runs nightly until January 2, 2017, was planned and executed by Hexogon Solution using a total of 42 Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projectors. The 45 days projection is the longest projection show duration in Taiwan. Showtime is from 17:30 to 22:00 daily. The story of this projection revolves around the Fang Tou Bear family Christmas adventures, where the Bears travel to space and around the globe in search of a white Christmas.

A slew of bright and vibrant visuals depicting Christmas adventures of the beloved Santa Bear and Fang Tou Bear family project onto the façade of the 30-storey New Taipei City Hall building in Banqiao District, as well as a fascinating 360-degree projection on a 36-meter-high cone-shaped Christmas tree in front of the building. Not only does this mark the debut of Boxer 4K30s for a major event in Taiwan, it is also the biggest ever projection mapping performance to be held here – with a projection area of 5,239 square meters (the size of a soccer field).

Adrian Goh, Group Managing and Artistic Director, Hexogon Solution, said, “We are immensely honoured to be given this opportunity to create this visual spectacular for the New Taipei City Government, by deploying 33 Boxer 4K30s for projections on the building’s surface and 9 projectors for mapping around the cone-shaped Christmas tree. Our objective is to create a world-class performance for the enjoyment of Taiwanese spectators during this festive period. At the same time, we wish to set the standard of what it takes to deliver a good projection mapping show in terms of technology, brightness and image quality in Taiwan.”

LIVEE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 88

According to Goh, preparations for this event commenced as early as June with the design of projection mapping contents, which are totally created in-house by the Hexogon team. “For this performance, we worked towards achieving contents with a more three-dimensional approach. The specified characters had been created in 3D, rather than using 2D animation that was done previously. The setting also involved a lot of optical illusion techniques, by conducting many rounds of simulations with mapping to bring the environment to life.”

The Hexogon team worked round the clock to meet the short timelines and to overcome the unpredictable on-site weather conditions, as the nightly performances have to continue regardless of the weather. Tapping on the valuable experience gathered during its involvement in Singapore’s National Day Parades and the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix, as well as last year’s South East Asian sporting event which accomplished a new Guinness World Records title for the greatest light output in a projected image, the Hexogon team successfully overcame the challenges to complete the setup within a week timeframe.

Page 89: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

LIVEE T A D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 6 89

“We developed our own enclosures that allow alignment and even the actual show to run under extreme weather conditions. With proper exhaust, cooling system and optical glass front case specially customized for this event, we are able to extend the heat tolerance of the Boxer 4K30 projectors to better manage the performances,” said Goh.

To further enhance the mood of the festive season, Hexogon Solution collaborated with Taiwanese Mandopop singer Jam Hsiao and his Lion Rock band, for part of the music that accompanied the two sets of 6-minute projection. This is the second collaboration with Jam Hsiao, as Hexogon Solution worked on the projection for Jam Hsiao's Triple JAM World Tour concert in 2015. Jam Hsiao, lead singer for Lion Rock band and his team members said, "The collaboration was seamless. Hexogon Solution understands our music well, and we displayed good synergy throughout this music compilation. The Lion Rock band is very proud to be part of such a large scale projection.”

The result is a mesmerizing Christmas extravaganza that spread the holiday cheer and Christmas fun for both the young and old. Featuring a series of exciting events from county fairs and large concerts to markets selling handmade goods and carnival parades, the “Christmasland in New Taipei City” event is one of the most popular hangouts during the Christmas season, as it embodies a joyful and celebratory atmosphere.

“We’re pleased with the performance of the Boxer 4K30s and are also delighted to accomplish our objective of delivering the biggest projection mapping performance in Taiwan. The client is also happy that whatever we suggested have all been fulfilled and proven correct. Hopefully this will set a new standard and customers’ expectation for future shows in Taiwan,” Goh said.

Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, “As one of the most prominent rental stagers in the region, Hexogon Solution is continually improving its capabilities and know-how to deliver spectacular and truly memorable visual experiences. I’m delighted

Your Studio Enterprise Turns Up The Beat In Kedah’s Dance Competition

MALAYSIA

RCF and Sennheiser solutions provide the perfect complement to the performances

Kedah’s Primary School Chinese Traditional Dance Competition had their finals in Keat Hwa Secondary School on 28th October 2016. A total of 12 schools participated in the competitions’

finals on that eventful day. The competition saw a great audience turn up who were very supportive of the participants.

As important as the dance performance choreography is, a great sound system is also needed to accompany the performers. That’s where Your Studio Enterprise came into play. Your Studio Enterprise has been in the sound industry for years. They were given the opportunity to provide the event with their equipment. They have provided their product and services, in the past, to various venues and events such as St. Regis Langkawi, Butterworth Chinese Temple, Yamaha trainings and many more.

Page 93: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

Throughout the event, 8 units of HDL 20-A, 7 units of HD 10-A, 2 units of SUB 8006-AS, 2 units of Evox 12, 2 units of SUB 8003-AS, 2 units of HDL 18-AS, 2 units of ART 312-A and 2 units of TT1 were deployed. A total of 27 units of RCF speakers were used in the event to create an immersive experience for both audience and performers. “Everyone has their own preference in speakers, as for me I find RCF speakers were able to reproduce sound the way I wanted them to,” commented Mr. Hee, Owner of Your Studio Enterprise. As for the microphones, 10 units of Sennheiser E825s, 2 units of Sennheiser D1-835s wireless microphone and 4 units of Sennheiser 145G3 were used.

Configuration and coordinating the sound to suit different group of performers was the challenging part. As there were a total of 12 groups, Mr. Hee needed to configure the sound that was harmonious which he was able to do.As for this event, “We provided our best RCF line array speakers which I felt was suitable for the large hall. As for the microphone, we used Sennheiser as it is able to capture sound just the way it is. The D1 Series was really impressive - not only was it easy to configure, it can also perform well,” said Mr. Hee.

As the audience cheered the participants, it was certain that the event was a successful event with the fine tune and coordinated sound systems.

An interview with the owner of Your Studio Enterprise, Mr. Hee

How did it all begin for Your Studio Enterprise? It all started with a recording studio back in 2002. I always had the interest in recreating sound that I would want to hear. I would like to emphasize that sound is a grey area, there is no black and white for sound. Everyone has their own preference in sound. I came up with a recording studio with the initial idea in helping customers record their sound pieces. After a couple of years, I decided I should not limit myself to just being a recording studio but as an enterprise that would be able to come out with the sound that I want and enjoy. It was a huge step for me to develop Your Studio Enterprise to what it is today. That’s how it all began, simple mind set of wanting to tune and configure sounds to my liking.

What are the challenges you face in your company? We dream big, we visualize big plans but as the saying goes; it is easier said than done. For me there were some truth in that saying, however we also have the saying “Go after your dreams, no matter how unattainable others think it is”. For me establishing the company

Page 95: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

was a big step from just a recording studio to a company that supplies audio visual equipment and services to events and special occasion. One of the challenges that I faced or rather most businesses would face is the pricing factor. I have experienced many who were more interested in the pricing rather than the quality of the product or the sound it can produce. To be honest, I would not say I strongly disagree with them. The cheaper the better it is for the company, however we need to take note that the quality of the sound is also important for the audience and the performers. For me I felt it is one of my duty to share my knowledge as a sound engineer on the importance of the equipment used. Different occasion has different sound system setting.

Your preferred equipment?Currently, I am impressed and satisfied with the sound quality that the RCF speakers can reproduce. As I mention earlier, sound is a grey area and I felt that RCF speakers are able to reproduce the sound the way I want them to be. I believe the product is on par with the pricing. It is true there are many other speakers out there, maybe greater, but the pricing for RCF is reasonable and the most important point is that the speakers are able to deliver what we want.

Your goals for the company? As for my goals, I am planning to enhance my sound system and equipment inventory. Running along with my passion which is to have a perfect sound, I am pleased to have RCF in my company’s inventory as I really enjoy the speakers. With plans to get better RCF product, I hope by doing so I am able to send a message out that quality of the sound system is as important as the pricing.

ROBE BMFLs For New Zealand Fashion Week

NEW ZEALAND

Simon Garret transforms show space with bold and dramatic looks

Simon Garret from Auckland based Oceania Productions designed lighting and visuals for the main showspace for New Zealand Fashion Week 2016, which was staged at The ANZ Viaduct

Events Centre, a funky venue at the heart of Wynard Quarter, New Zealand’s largest urban regeneration project, right on the Auckland waterfront.

Simon, known for his own style in lighting, has been involved with the NZFW event as it’s been known since 2004, since the start. This year he again transformed the show space with bold and dramatic looks and scenes with the help of 24 x Robe BMFL Blades and 12 x BMFL Spots.

The venue showcased creations by some of the most innovative and interesting New Zealand designers , and with up to five shows a day for seven days, Simon needed as much flexibility as possible to

change the ambience of the environment and meet the demands and expectations of an industry renowned for its attention to visual detail.

In addition to that flamboyance, there were the de rigeuer fashion show pressures of producing fabulous shadow-less fleshtones for the amassed media.

Simon worked closely with event producer, founder and organiser Pieter Stewart and production manager Pak Peacocke who designed an adaptable runway scheme with five standard configuration options.

This could be set up as single, double or three parallel individual linear runways, a U- shape or a figure-8 all of which needed very precise lighting … all with corresponding seating block positions, and it was this for which Simon needed a powerful arc-source fixture with shutters.

After an initial demo of the BMFL Blade from Robe’s Australian and New Zealand distributor The ULA Group, he felt confident that “with these 24 fixtures I could provide sufficient and appropriate back light at around 300 foot-candles from about 7 metres distance for all five runway options”.

So he went ahead and specified the BMFL Blades with the intention of using them as his primary back-light sources, with Oceania making its latest investment in Robe.

With tungsten still being the ‘go-to’ colour temperature for fashion shows, Simon thinks that “this latest generation of arc fixtures are an ideal complement, especially with their refined and accurate temperature control”.

At the Viaduct, five lighting trusses were installed in the roof running the length of the catwalk – the centre one aligned with the middle of the single runway option and trusses 2 & 4 with the wider (outside) catwalks.

Page 98: Lightsource Lights Up The Night Sky At MahaNakhon's Official Opening

Eighteen of the BMFL Blades were rigged on trusses 2 & 4 and used as the three-quarter back-light for models walking below when in the single runway mode or square back-light for the dual and triple catwalk mode, with another

six BMFL Blades upstage delivering the same colour control on the varying backgrounds of the entranceway.

There was also a ‘fashion lunch’ mode set up which included two additional perimeter catwalks with tables and chairs where the central catwalks had been.

The BMFL Blades enabled him to match, balance or complement the predominant colour temperature for each individual show.

Employing BMFLs in this context meant Simon needed far fewer fixtures to achieve the myriad backlight effects than if he’d been using conventionals, and enabled him and his team to gain time on every show’s load in and focussing, freeing up more to be creative.

The 12 x standard BMFL Spots were rigged on the centre truss, where they proved ideal for effects, fill, and adding drama and excitement as and when needed.

Simon deployed 144 x PAR 64s gelled in CT 202 for his side lighting, complementing the slightly cooler hues from the back, keeping the front at 3200K tungsten.

With all these options the back flats (entranceway) became very mobile show to show. These were lit using tungsten ETC Revolutions which balanced beautifully with the front light mainly from nine pole-operated 5K fresnels. Together this added warmth and depth that is sometimes missed in lighting fashion shows too clinically. The 5Ks,

with adjustment covered all of the three linear catwalks and the crossover options.

Lighting was controlled via a GrandMA2 console programmed by Chad O’Grady and Simon also designed lights and creative for a second smaller room in The Viaduct, which was operated by Stefaan Simons using a Hog. Also key on his crew was LD assistant AJ Henningsen.

He enjoyed lighting all the shows, although there were a few stand-out moments including Adrian Hailwood, featuring a curtain reveal of The Graduate Choir onstage at the top of the show, who sang accompanied by piano. This live soundtrack added a rich layer of texturing and as the segments of the show unfolded, the natural ‘audio gaps’ helped focus the audience on the well-defined retro-modern elegance on the runway.

Also memorable was Trelise Cooper’s vibrant show with giant scenic flowers on the runway and a collection of bold and modern colours; and the avant-garde cool of the WORLD brand complete with stark raw white light and ear-shattering electronic soundtrack.

While Simon discusses the requirements and vibes with the individual designers, he’s lucky to be trusted and given largely a free rein to apply his experience and imagination to create the right lighting ambience for their collections.

After all those years in the hot seat ... he’s clearly doing something right and still relishing the challenges and achievements.
