Surge protectionwith greater coordination

MCD 50-B and MCD 125-B/NPE
N E W
When combined with surge arrest-ers connected in series immediatelydownstream, the new OBO lightningarresters MCD 50-B and MCD 125-B/NPE ensure a coordinatedresponse, without the need for addi-tional decoupling elements. The fun-damental advantages of the innova-tive multi-carbon technology of OBOLightningControllers are fully pre-served.
The low protection level ( 1.3 kV)makes it unnecessary to installdecoupling inductances or to pro-vide additional lengths of conductorbetween lightning arresters (require-ment class B) and surge arresters(requi rement class C). This results ina space saving on installation of upto 45 per cent, a great advantagewhere compact EMC concepts areconcerned. In addition, the separateNPE spark gap at the surge arrester
(requirement class C) with compact TT and TN-S systems can be omit-ted.
Preferred fields of application for thenew OBO devices are compactsurge protection concepts in separatehousings and the installation of arresters of requirement classes Band C in a distribution board. Typicalapplications: compact mobile phoneinstallations.

The advantagesLow protection level 1.3 kV.No need for a decoupling induc-tance or a length of conductorbetween arresters of requirementclasses B and C.Up to 45% space saving withcompact EMC concepts.Proven multi-carbon technology inthe LightningControllers. No sensitive trigger electronicsinside the lightning arresters. With compact TT and TN-Ssystems there is no need for theadditional NPE sum spark gap
with surge arresters of require-ment class C.
Technical data
MCD 50-B The specially doped insulating rings, which determine the precisely defined
spacing of the nine spark gaps, guarantee the low protection level (Up) 1.3 kV. As with the provenMC 50-B/VDE, the modular arrestermakes it possible to remove the upperpart without interrupting the main vol-tage, in order to measure the insula-tion re sistance in accordance with TAB2000.
MCD 125-B/NPE The MCD 125-B/NPE version is an
NPE spark gap intended to be in-stalled between the neutral conductor(N) and the protective earth conductor(PE). The low protection level ( 1.3kV)is achieved by a specially coordinatedprotection circuit.
