One of the most strik-
ing aspects in the rich history of the George Wash-ington Masonic National Memorial
isthat,throughoutitsconceptual-ization,itsearlyconstruction,itscompletion,anditsmaintenance,American Freemasons have been the sourceofitssupport.Thatcontin-uestoday.Twenty-sixofourGrandLodgesareparticipatinginour$1PerMemberPerYearcampaign.AndmanyofyougivepersonallyasFriendsoftheMemorial.Forthissupport,wearetrulygrateful.Betweentheindividualandthe
GrandLodge,thereisanotheroptionforsupport:thelodgeitself.Thesymboliclodgeisthefounda-tionoftheCraft.Recognizingthis,werecentlycreatedtheSocietyofWashingtonLodges.TheSocietyisdesignedforindividuallodgestojoin,allowinganopportunityforanyregularCraftlodgetosupporttheMemorialfinanciallywhilecel-ebratingtheenduringconnectionbetweentheMemorial’sgreatmis-sionandtheCraftitself.EachLodgethatbecomesamem-
beroftheSocietyofWashingtonLodgeswillreceiveahigh-quality

OnAugust1–2,2014,TheGeorgeWashingtonMasonicNationalMemorialAsso-ciation’sBoardofDirectorsmetinAlexandriaforaSemi-AnnualMeeting.Asthe
AnnualMeetingoftheBoardconvenesattheConferenceofGrandMastersofNorthAmerica,meetingmidyearattheMemorialallowstheBoardmembersanopportunitytovisittheMemorialpersonally.ThisalsoallowstheBoard’smemberstoobservetheworkbeingperformeddailytoeducateandinspirethepublicthroughgreaterunderstandingofourforemostFreemason,BrotherGeorgeWashington.TheBoardconsideredprogressreportsonmanyactivitiesattheMemorial,including
buildingrepairsandrestorationwork,facilitiesutilization,exhibits,events,communi-cationsandfundraisingwork.TheBoarddiscussedtheMemorial’soperatingfundandinvestmentportfolio,andtheneedtogeneratemoreincometocompleteneededprojectsinalignmentwithourstrategicplan.AbreakoutsessionabouttheMemorial’sworkwasplannedforthe2015ConferenceofGrandMasters.Inaddition,theMemorial’smanybenefitstotheCraftweredetailed,includingprovidingafraternalconnectiontoGeorgeWashington,offeringaccurateinformationaboutFreemasonry,highlightingaGrandLodgeoftheMonth,servingasaresearchcenter,andprovidingpubliceducationthroughtours,exhibits,thewebsiteandsocialmedia.

FromtheObservationDecktothenine-steppedpyramidaboveit,thetopofthe
Memorialhasbeenencasedinscaffoldingfornearlyfourmonths.Ican’thelpbutthinkthatthisisthewaytheMemoriallookedinthelate1920sandearly1930swhenthe
workmenweredoingtheirbesttocompletetheMemorialpriortoWashington’sBicentennialBirthdayin1932.TheimmensescaleofthepyramidatthetopoftheMemorialisnotfullyev-identuntilcomparedtothemendoingtherestorationwork.Eachgraniteblockistallerthanamanandonthelowertierssometwentyfeetlong.Settingthesestoneswasatrulyhercule-antaskaswastheconstructionoftheentireMemorial.JustastheOperativeStonemasonswhobuiltthismagnif-
icentMemorialarebuilders,placingstoneontopofstonetoreacheverhigherandfinallyreachthepinnacleoftheMemo-rial,Freemasonsarebuilders,buildersofcharacter,enablingourmemberstostrengthenandsupporttheirfamiliesandtheircommunitiesandtorisetotheirhighestpotential.TheMemo-rialwasconceivedandconstructedasaphysicalrepresentationoftheadmirationandrespectthatFreemasonsholdforthemaninwhosehonorandmemoryitwaserected,ourFirstPresidentandsurelyourForemostFreemason,BrotherGeorgeWashington.Washington’slifewasajourneyofnotonlyselfimprovement,butalsoajourneyofimprovingandupliftingthelivesofthecitizensofournewlyformedcountry,theUnited
StatesofAmerica.ItisfittingandproperthatourMasonicForefatherscreatedthismagnificentMemorial.NowitisuptoustorestoretheMemorialtoitsoriginalsplendorandbeauty.AstheworkofrestoringthisTemplegoeson,itisacontinuingreminderformetoworkonmyTemple,tokeepinmindandadheretotheteachingsofFreemasonry,tostrivetoimprovemyselfdailyandtolivebythetenantsofourCraft.TherestorationofthisMemorialTempletoGeorgeWash-
ingtonbeganwiththecommissioningofacompleteassessmentoftheentirestructurein2009.Theresultingreportenlight-enedtheBoardofDirectors,notonlyofthemanyyearsofdelayedmaintenance,butalsoofthefactthatseveralaspectsandproceduresoftheoriginalplanswerenevercompletedtoadequatelyandproperlyprotectandindeedtocompletethestructure.Since2009theBoardofDirectorshasauthorizedtheexpenditureofnearly4milliondollarsinrepairs,restorationandupgradestotheMemorial.Someofthemostexpensiveandintenserestorationhasbeencompleted,butwehaveatleastthreemoreyearsofwork,tonotonlyrestoretheMemorialtoitsoriginalgrandeur,butalsotofullycompleteitaccordingtotheoriginaldesignsandplans.WehavebeentrulyblessedtohaveMemorialAssociationOfficersandBoardMemberswiththevision,thestrengthandthecouragetoundertaketheimmensetaskofrestoringtheMemorialandthegroundstotheiroriginalsplendor.WehavealsobeenblessedtohavethesupportoftheFreemasonsoftheUnitedStatesandtheFriendsoftheMemorial,withouttheirsupportnoneoftheworkwerearedoingwouldbepossible.ThankyouforyourcontinuingsupportandrememberthatthisMemorialbelongstoyou.PleasecomeandvisityourMemorial.
Workers on the scaffolding at the Memorial’s Pyramid level installed a new LED-based lighting system, re-mortared all of the joints between the stones, and installed a weather-cap to preserve the new mortar. They also cleaned the surface of the granite, restoring it to its original appearance.

AfterthesuddendeathofThomasShryockinFebruary1918,theMemorialAssociationelectedPastGrandMasterof
PennsylvaniaLouisWatresasitsnewPresident.Althoughbornin1851,thesameyearasShryock,Watreshadthevisionandenergyofthenewcentury.WhileShryockhadbeenGrandMasterofMarylandforoverthirtyyearsandheldnearlyeverystate-levelMasonicoffice,WatreshadabroaderknowledgeofAmericanindustry.Watrespossessedanacuteskilltoorganizemen,moneyandresourcesintogreatenterprises.Inthefirstyearofhistenure,
WatrestransformedtheMemorialAssociation.Hesuspendedallfund-raisingactivities.HeestablishedaWaysandMeansCommitteetocoordinateallAssociationinfor-mationandresources.Next,heproposeddividingthenationintotenregionstocommunicateinformationandsupportwithinaregion’sgrandjurisdictions.Addedtothetenwasaneleventh“flyingsquadron”ofPastGrandMasterswhowouldsupporttheMemorialAssociationatanyUSGrandLodgemeeting.Callinguponmanyaffluentand
influentialbrethrenintheCraft,heestablishedanAdvisoryBoard.ChairedbyJohnWanamaker,itincludedtheVicePresidentoftheUnitedStates,SenatorsandCon-gressmen,anArmygeneralandaNavyadmiral.Presidingathisfirstannualmeetingin1919,Watres’welcoming
addressincludedareviewtheAssociation’spastaccomplishmentsandtheproposedreorganization.Butheclosedhisremarkswitheyesonthegreatervision:
“Were our Memorial to him [Washington] as enduring as the pyra-mids, it could not exceed the esteem in which we hold him in our hearts as one whose name has glorified our land for all time.”
The1919meetingwasagreatsuccess,yetGrandMastersfromseveralGrandLodgeshadnotattended.Toremedythis—andto
affirmthattheMemorial’smissionspannedthewholenation—Watreswentwest.InAugust,heandmostoftheofficersheldameetinginDenver.TheseveralGrandLodgerepresentativesapprovedthedistributionofbrochuresandbookletstolodgesasthefirststeptowardsecuringtheminimumdonationof$1percapita.Laterthatyear,some15,000bookletsweresenttoeveryAmericanlodge.Actingas“ChiefofStaff”forthisoperation
wasPastGrandMasterofIowa,GeorgeSchoonover.AsWatrestransformedthe
Association,Americansocietywasalsoevolving.AnewagebeganonNovember11,1918,withthearmi-sticeofFirstWorldWar.In1919,ascivilwarsandrevolutionsrav-agedmanynationsinEuropeandelsewhere,Americansteelwork-ersandcoalminersheldnationalstrikes.Chicagosufferedmajorraceriots,theU.S.ArmyinvadedMexicoinpursuitofPanchoVilla,andFederalagentsarrestedthousandsofallegedcommunistsandanarchistsasthe“RedScare”grippedAmerica.Toppingitoff,onJanuary17,1920,prohibitionofalcoholbecamethelawoftheland.
American Freemasonry felt the impactofthisnewage.Between1917and1920membershipincreasedbymorethan500,000,orover25%,andsurpassed2.4million.Whileencouragingtothe
Memorial’sprospects,theseyoungFreemasonspresentedagreatchallenge.TheAssociationhadtoattracttheirsupportfortheplannedMemorial.Atitstenthannualmeeting,theAssociationreceivedprogress
reportsfromtheseveralnewcoordinatingandregionalcommit-tees.Whileeachreportedsuccessfulrecruitmentandpromotion,totalcontributionswerejust$34,410.Watresremindedthebreth-renthat$123,955wasfarshyofthe$500,000requiredtobreakground.Hethenfocusedonlocalissues.TheAssociationreviseditsconstitutionsandcreatedafive-manBoardofTrustees,threeofwhomwouldbemembersofAlexandria-WashingtonLodge

played“inperpetuity,”theLodgewouldhavetherighttoruna“souvenirstand,”andshouldtheLodgeevergodarkorleavetheMemorial,itsartifactswouldremainintheMemorialondisplay.TheAssociationnextapprovedthepurchaseofanadditional22
acresonShutersHill.Atacostof$8,500,allthelandneededforthegreatMemorialwassecured.Next,newly-appointedSecretary-TreasurerClaudeKeiper,a
PastGrandMasteroftheDistrictofColumbia,madehisreport.TotalreceiptsbetweenFebruary22,1920,andFebruary16,1921,equaled$124,496.73—anamountgreaterthanallfundsraisedinthepriortenyearscombined.ThefivelargestcontributorsweretheGrandLodgesofMichigan($21,881),Illinois($21,600),Penn-sylvania($20,519),Oklahoma($15,181),andKentucky($14,825).Adjustedforinflation,todaythetotal1920contributionswouldequalnearly$1.5million.Finally,theAssociationagreedtooverhaulitsconstitutionand
bylaws.ItlimitedmembershiptoU.S.GrandLodges.Itcreatedafive-memberBoardofTrusteestoadministerthelandandfunds,andanine-memberBoardofDirectorstooverseetheentiremis-sion.GrandLodgeMemberselectedtheTrustees,theDirectorsandtheAssociation’sofficers.ThreeofthefiveTrusteeshadtobeAlexandria-WashingtonLodgeNo- 22members,whileonlythePresidentwasamemberoftheBoardofDirectors.Withtheelectioncompleted,PresidentWatresestablishedtheExecutiveCommittee,comprisingalltheofficers,torunnon-constructionactivities,whiletheWaysandMeansCommitteefocusedontheMemorial’sconstruction.
A Transformed AssociationThreeyearsafterassumingoffice,Watreshadalltheworkingtoolsheneeded.Fromtoptobottom,asPresident,heledtheExecutiveCommittee,theWaysandMeansCommittee,thetenregionaldivisions,thestatechairmenandGrandLodgerepre-sentativeswhocouldreachover14,000lodgesand2.4millionFreemasons.TheAssociationhadanequitableagreementwithAlexandria-WashingtonLodge,morethanenoughlandonwhichtobuild,andhadmorethandoubleditsassetswithinasingleyear.At3:10p.m.–anhourafterclosingthe1921annualmeeting—
WatresgaveledopenthefirstBoardofDirectorsmeeting.ItsfirstactionwastoelecttheExecutiveCommitteeandauthorizeitsmemberstoconsulttheSchoolsofArchitectureatHarvard,Penn,CornellandNewYorkUniversity.RecommendationswouldbesubmittedtoWatresnolaterthanMay1,1921.CharlesCallahanandThomasShryockhadthewisdomtocon-
ceiveagreatmemorialtoGeorgeWashington.LouisWatreshadprovidedthestrengthtosupportit.Now,atlonglast,thetimehadcometocallthemasterbuilder.

tativeplansfortheconstructionofaMemorialatacostofnotlessthanonemilliondollars.”Theplansweretobesubmittedin1921andmustbe“inkeepingwiththecharacterofandachieve-mentsofGeorgeWashington.”TheywerealsotoprovidequartersforAlexandria-WashingtonLodgeNo- 22,afireproofrepositoryfortheWashingtonrelics,“suitablequartersforagreatMasoniclibrary,”anauditoriumtoseat1,500personsandadministrativeofficesfortheAssociation.1920broughtmorechanges.Americanvoters—including
womenforthefirsttime—electedWarrenG. HardingasPres-identoftheUnitedStates.AnOhiobrotherofMarionLodgeNo- 70,President-electHardingpromisedthecountry“areturntonormalcy.”TheyearalsowitnessedthefirstprofitsofWatres’reorganization.TheMemorialAssociation’s1921meetingwasalmostsingular
initsaccomplishments.ItmarkedthemomentwhenCallahan’sdreambecamereality.TheWaysandMeanscommitteepre-sented,withoutcost,atentativeplanfortheMemorial.ThemeetingalsosealedaformaltrustbetweentheMemorial
AssociationandAlexandria-WashingtonLodgeNo- 22.Amongthemostnotableofitsfourteenpointswere:theMemorialwouldprovideroomsfortheLodgefreeofcharge,theLodgewouldmaintaina“replicalodgeroom”whereitsrelicswouldbedis-

TheDedicatoryTreeProgram,establishedin2003,isoneoftheGeorgeWashingtonMasonicNationalMemorial’smost
favoredoptionsfordonors.Bymakingamodestcontribution,adonormayhaveatreeontheMemorial’sgroundsdedicatedtoanindividualororganization.Eachtreeismarkedwithagran-itestoneindicatingthehonoreeandthedonor.Andeverytreeismaintainedinperpetuity.Ourtreeserviceprunesthetreesperiodically,andunhealthytreesaretreatedorreplacedwithoutadditionalcosttothedonor.EvenbeforeIcametoworkattheMemorial,Iwasawareof
thetreeprogramthroughthepromotionaleffortsofMrs.KathyNagel,wifeofMostWorshipfulBrotherKennethG.Nagel,California’sGrandMasterin2010andcurrentmemberoftheMemorialAssociation’sBoardofDirectors.Together,theysuc-cessfullyencourageddozensofCalifornialodgesandbrethrentosponsortrees,raisingover$50,000andsignificantlyraisingaware-ness of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in theGoldenState.Whilehighlyeffectiveasawaytopromoteawarenessofthe
Memorialanditswork,thetreeprogramhasmanyadditional
TreeProgramRevitalizedwithNewWebsitebyShawnEyer
benefitstonote.Formanyyears,ShutersHill—thesiteoftheMemorial—wasrelativelybare.Butinthedrawingsthatwerepreparedinthe1920sbytheoriginalarchitectsoftheMemorial,thismajestichillwasdepictedwithalargenumberoftrees.It wasvisualizedasaverdantgardenthatwouldpreparethestagefortheMemorialitself,framingitsgrandiosearchitecturewithinanaturalsettingofimpressivebeauty.DuetounexpectedeconomicpressuressuchastheGreatDepressionandtheSecondWorldWar,theportionofthelandscapedesigndealingwithvegetationwasnotacteduponduringtheoriginalbuildingera.Today,itisanopportunityforustorestoreandfulfilltheoriginalvisionofthosegreatFreemasonswhoplannedanddesignedourMemorial.Anotherbenefitisenvironmental.Treesarenotonlybeautiful,
buttheyproduceoxygen.Morethanthat,studieshaveshownthattheyarephysicallyhelpfulbecausetheyremovepollutantsfromtheairandpsychologicallytherapeuticbecausetheirpresenceisstress-relieving.Masonically,weknowthatbeautymustadornanythingtrulygreat.OurtreeprogramfulfillsthatfortheMemo-rial’sgrounds,justasthearchitecturalgrandeuroftheMemorialfulfillsthatforthetempleitself.

Rolling Up Our SleevesWhiletheDedicatoryTreeProgramhasbeensuccessful“ontheground,”itneededmorepublicity.So,workingwithfeedbackfromourdonorsfromExecutiveDirectorGeorgeD. Seghers,Idesignedaplanforawebsiteapplicationthatwouldmakethetreeprogrammoreinteractiveandbettercommunicateitsvalue.Thefirststepintheprocesswastotakeacomprehensive

Forseveralyears,ourMasonicDigitalArchivesprojecthasbeengrowing,andrecentlyaneedtomakeimprovementsinthe
waythesystemworksinspiredamajorupgradetothesoftwareunderlyingthesystem.ShawnEyer,ourDirectorofCommuni-cations,reviewedavailableoptionsandselectedLunaImagingasournewserviceprovider.In2013and2014,allcollectionswereportedtothenewsystem.Thenewinterfacehasseveralbenefits.First,itissignificantly
fasterintermsofpageandobjectdisplay.Italsoallowsforamorenatural,two-page“bookview,”whichmakesonlinebooksmucheasiertoperuse.Italsoincludesapowerfulandfastsearchfeature,whichhighlightssearchresultsoneachpage(top right).UsersmayaccessthenewsystemdirectlyfromourhomepagebyselectingtheDigitalArchiveslink.TheconceptbehindtheMasonicDigitalArchivesprojectisto

(msa),andtheConferenceofGrandMastersofNorthAmerica(CgmNa)arethreenotableMasonicorganizationsfoundedearlyinthetwentiethcentury.Theywereallestablishedataroundthesametime,withsomeofthesameindividualsinvolvedinallthreeorganizations.WhilethegWmNma,themsa,andtheCgmNa are andhavealwaysbeenconsideredseparateorganizations,couldtheyoriginallyhavebeenconnectedinsomeway?Thisarticleexplorestheirhistoryinordertoanswerthatquestion.thegeorgeWashiNgtoNmasoNiCNatioNalmemo-
rialassoCiatioN.FreemasonsfromaroundthecountrygatheredinAlexandria,Virginia,onFebruary22,1910,todis-cussplansfororganizinganAssociationwhosepurposewouldbetoconstructamemorialtemple.Bro. ThomasJ.Shryock,GrandMasterofMaryland,waselectedPresidentofthenewgWmNma.Bro. CharlesCallahanorganizedthefirstmeetingofthe gWmNmain1910,andthetwoofthem,workingtogether,madethebuildingoftheMemorialpossible.ThefirststepwasthepurchaseofShutersHillinAlexandria,thepropertyonwhichtheMemorialwaslaterbuilt.Today,thegWmNmacontinuestosup-porttheMemorialandguideitsvitalwork.theCoNfereNCeofgraNdmastersofNorthamer-
iCa.TheConferenceofGrandMastershelditsfirstconferenceinPhiladelphiain1909.Generally,thepurposeoftheCgmNa is open.ItenablesGrandMasterstobecomeacquaintedwitheachotherandtounderstandandtoappreciatethesortofsituationsandcomplexitieswithwhichGrandLodgesdeal,suchasissuesofrecognition.AttimestheyhaveindicatedinterestinMasonicedu-cationandleadership.ItmustbestressedthattheGrandMastersdonotvoteintheirconference,exceptforelectingcertainofficesortoestablishinternalrules.EachGrandLodgeissovereigninitsownJurisdiction,andtheconferenceofGrandMastersdoesnotundertaketochangethat.NoproposalthatlimitsordirectstheactivitiesofanyGrandJurisdictionisconsideredbytheCgmNa.themasoNiCserViCeassoCiatioN.TheResolutionfor
theMasonicServiceAssociation’sfoundationcameintobeingin1918attheConferenceofGrandMastersinCedarRapids,Iowa.TheProceedingsfromthisConferencearefascinating.Theyexplainthat,fromthetimeofAmerica’sentryintotheFirstWorldWar,MasonicorganizationsintheUnitedStatesdesiredtoprovideassistancetomilitarypersonnelinEurope.MasonswhohadseentheEuropeansituationfirsthandmadeastrongcaseinfavoroftheneedfororganizedassistanceandrelief.Forvariousreasons—includingGeneralPershing’sunwillingnesstodealwith
largenumbersofcivilianorganizationsingeneral—theFed-eralGovernmentdecidedthatitcouldnotdealwith49separateGrandLodgesperformingthesametaskswithsoldiers.Inlightofthegreatneed,andaftersignificantdebateanddis-
cussion,theConferenceresolvedtoorganizethemsa,for“theServiceofMankindthrougheducation,enlightenment,finan-cialreliefandMasonicvisitation,particularlyintimesofdisasteranddistress.”TheConferenceestablishedanExecutiveCommis-sionoftheMasonicServiceAssociationtobechairedbyGrandMasterGeorgeSchoonoverfromIowa,withsixothermembers:R. Kenworthy,N.Y.;H. McPherson,Michigan;A. Wherry,Utah;C. Homer,Maryland;E. Gross,R.I.;andW. Stockwell,N.D.Althoughtheoriginalimpetusforthemsawastohelpservicemenoverseas,itquicklytookonotherchallenges:toprovidereliefafternaturaldisastersandtoprovideMasoniceducation.thequestioNofaCoNNeCtioN.Were these three
organizationsconnectedinsomeway?Thereisnoobviousorga-nizationalinterconnection.However,ofthesevenmembersofthemsa’sExecutiveCommissionlistedabove,four—Schoonover,Kenworthy,HomerandStockwell—wereBoardMembersofthe gWmNma.Theywereseniormembersoftwoorganizationsandinfluentialinthefoundingofthethird,aswerefiveothermembersofthe1918CgmNa:C. Clark,W. Farmer,G. Lusk,T. ScudderandL. Watres.Inaddition,examinationofthemin-utesofmsameetingsindicatedthepresenceofanumberofotherswhowereboardmembersofthegWmNma:W. Daniels,N.J.;M. Johnson,Mass.;A.Randell,Texas,andO.D. Street,Ala-bama.Andin1930,themsadecidedtomeetonedayeitherbeforeorafterthegWmNma–presumablytoaccommodatethetravelarrangementsofthosewhoweremembersofbothorganizations.Betweenthe1930sandthe1980s,outofconvenienceand
overlappingmembership,allthreeorganizationsgatheredeachFebruaryinWashington,D.C.,andconvenedintheauditoriumGeorgeWashingtonMasonicNationalMemorial.Thesemeet-ingsinspiredtheAlliedMasonicDegreesandotherMasonicbodiestoholdtheirannualmeetingsinWashingtonjustpriortothe“bigthree.”Thiscreatedtheso-called“MasonicWeek.”In1980,theCgmNabeganregularlymeetinginvariousGrandLodgeswithintheUnitedStatesandCanada.ThegWmNmaandthe msafollowedsuitandcontinuetodoso.Inconclusion,whilesincethe1930sthegWmNma,theCgmNa
andthemsahaveusuallymeetinthesameplaceandonthesamedayeachyear,theyeachhaveseparateanduniquemissions.Whileformedwithinafewyearsofeachother,andoftenbythesamemen,theyareseparateMasonicorganizations.
