The Lubavitcher Rebbe taughtthat Chanukah is an importantholiday to be celebrated withjoy. Sure, we do every mitzvah in theTorah with happiness, but lightingChanukah candles, which bring lightinto our homes and onto the streetoutside, evokes extra joy andexcitement.

Rejoicing on Chanukah is not a newinvention. Maimonides writes thatwe party on Chanukah because oursages established the days ofChanukah for rejoicing. We Jewshave rejoiced on Chanukah in alltimes and in all places. Joy has aspecial power to completelyovercome problems. Today we live introubled times and the need for joy ismore urgent than ever.

Invite your friends and family for aChanukah party! Let us celebrateG-d’s miracles, and strengthenourselves as Jews, to ensure that ourcandles keep on burning and glowing.

Dear Friend, Please enjoy this guide to Chanukah, the festival oflights. We hope you find it inspirational andinformative. It contains Chanukah messages andinstructions for lighting the menorah on page 11, aswell as a recipe on page 9.

There is a page specifically designated for everynight of Chanukah. Gather your friends and familyand anybody else to light the menorah, using theinstructions at the bottom of each page. Then readthe Chanukah message we designated for that night.

If you’ve already read this pamphlet andassimilated its messages, please don’t discard it.Give it to somebody else, and illuminate theirChanukah. For your free Menorah lighting kit, please contact our office.

Please join us at our annual Chanukah Festival,Sunday, December 9, 4:30 PM at Chabad of Your City.

We look forward to greeting you.

  • Messing with Jewish identity is dangerous.

    > Being a tax-paying citizen is nice, butsometimes you have to stand up for your rights.

    > Even gentle animals like elephants can be ropedinto playing the bad guy.

  • When the Maccabeesrecaptured Jerusalem andentered the Holy Temple, they found a disturbing mess—idols, pork chops and broken beerbottles everywhere. So they tidiedup and rededicated the Temple.

Problem: The six-foot goldenMenorah had to be lit with pureolive oil, undefiled by those whowere ritually impure. All the oil inthe Temple had been defiled by theGreeks. There was no one therewho could make new oil, sinceeveryone was ritually impure, having just fought a war and killedpeople.

Solution: Get some new olive oil.

Problem: The best olive oil camefrom the orchards of Tekoah—athree day journey away. To gothere, get the oil, and come back, would take seven days. No onewanted to use second-class oil, butwho wanted to wait?

Solution: A miracle in two parts: a) Someone found a bottle of pureoil hidden beneath the floor, sealedwith the insignia of the High Priest. b) Even though it was a single flaskwith just enough oil for one night,it lasted for eight days.

If something seems impossible, perhaps try a littlefaith and G-d may provide a miracle.

    > When it comes to a mitzvah, use only the best.

    > Miracles are hiding under your feet, waiting for youto recognize them.

Wednesday, December 5, 2007:Say Blessings 1 & 2 (see page 11) and kindle two flames.

The choicest olives, from which oil wasprepared for the Temple Menorah, grew aroundthe city of Tekoah, belonging to the tribe ofAsher. Jacob blessed Asher with the words,“From Asher will come rich food, and he willyield regal delicacies.” —GENESIS 49:20
