Thanks to a generous donation from The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 Vernon, Vernon Jubilee Hospital has additional vital testing equipment. The Legion donated $17,790 for a bladder scanner in the Emergency Department (ED). The ED, which had 47,908 visits last year, had only one scanner which was used multiple times each day, with increasing demand. The new bladder scanner will assist physicians and nurses to perform non-invasive bladder assessment and timely patient assessment. Bladder scanners are non-invasive portable ultrasound devices that provide a virtual 3D image of the bladder and the volume of urine retained within the bladder. Retained urine is a reservoir for bacteria and pathogens which can cause urinary tract infections leading to renal damage, pain and retention. Many veterans and their families require health care attention at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Emergency Department and will benefit greatly from this technology. Funds for the bladder scanner were raised through the Vernon Legion’s poppy campaign, which provides funding for veteran-related causes including special medical equipment, social and health-related services for veterans and seniors, low-rental housing, geriatric research, and bursaries for under-privileged youth. The annual poppy campaign runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 11, with poppies available by donation at various locations throughout the North Okanagan. It’s been 30 years since VJH Foundation launched its first Light a Bulb Campaign. Since then, nearly $4.5 million has been raised through community donations to support the purchase of much-needed medical equipment and expansions for Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Last year, donations supported high-definition camera heads and control units for minimally invasive surgery in the Operating Rooms at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. This holiday season you have the opportunity to give a gift to help make health care better! Dr. Curtis Mohamed, Medical Director Nuclear Medicine, Department of Medical Imaging at VJH and 2017 Light a Bulb Chair is pleased to announce the goal for this year’s Light a Bulb Campaign is to raise $250,000 for cancer screening at VJH. Each year more than 5,000 patients in North Okanagan communities undergo endoscopic diagnostic testing in our Ambulatory Care Unit at VJH. These procedures help detect and treat critical health issues such as colon and rectal cancer, and esophageal, stomach, and small intestine cancer. Physicians also diagnose many common non-cancer diseases such as colitis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, esophagitis, and H pylori infection. Endoscopy Saves Lives VJH is the third busiest site for endoscopy within Interior Health. There is a surgeon on call 24/7 for GI hemorrhage, a potentially life threatening illness. We have one of the best survival rates in the province for this illness at VJH thanks to skilled endoscopists, excellent hospital care from family doctors and hospitalists, and availability of state of the art endoscopy equipment at our hospital. Endoscopes are critical diagnostic tools and can detect early cancers as they feature exceptional clarity in imaging. One in 6 people in BC will be affected with colon cancer. In early stages colon cancer has no symptoms, making screening and diagnostics critical and lifesaving. With early detection and treatment, survival rates are 90%. Cancer Prevention at VJH Half of the patients in the provincial colon screening program have adenomatous polyps removed. These are small tumours that can turn to cancer. By removing these polyps, we prevent hundreds of people in our community from getting colorectal cancer every year. Since the colon screening program began in 2013, we have seen the number of patients that show up with advanced cancer in the Emergency Department cut in half. Our endoscopy unit is a very high impact area and worth the investments made in equipment over the years,” said VJH General Surgeon Dr. Hamish Hwang. Supporting cancer screening at the Ambulatory Care Unit will help provide the best care possible for you, your family and friends. Early cancer detection allows for more treatment options and better patient outcomes. “Your donation will make a real and meaningful impact by helping us purchase critical diagnostic equipment supporting early cancer detection. Please make a donation and give the gift of better health care this holiday season,” said Dr. Mohamed.

Retained urine is a reservoir for bacteria and pathogens which can cause urinary tract

infections leading to renal damage, pain and retention.

Many veterans and their families require health care attention at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Emergency Department and will benefi t greatly from this technology.

Like many of her generation, Marie Dedish grew up with a large family in a small town. Life in Ranger, Saskatchewan during the 1940s could be tough.

“There was no running water, no phone, the nearest hospital was 20 miles away, and we rode to a one-room school house on a fi re-engine caboose pulled by horses. But we survived the times,” she smiled.

Marie enjoyed taking part in community gatherings and sporting events. “It was fun cheering on the teams. That’s where I met my husband, Hank.”

The two married in 1958.

“Hank was an RCMP member, so we had to move a lot for his work,” she said. “I realized it would be hard for me to keep a job.” Throughout Hank’s eleven transfers, Marie dedicated herself to volunteering in the many communities she called home.

While raising their two children, Marie helped others when it was needed. “Wherever we were, I was involved in the community. When we lived in Alexis Creek I had a little Volkswagen and would take residents from the reserve to town and back, making sure they got to their appointments or to the store if they needed to do some shopping.”

Marie also took part in fundraising bingos for the community hall and children’s playground equipment.

Some communities had more than their share of diffi culties. “We lived with some of the nicest people, but they had a lot of problems holding them back. There was only one social worker in town. She drove an old car and sometimes in the cold weather it wouldn’t start, so I would help out where I could.”

Having supported friends and neighbours throughout many hardships, Marie and her family received devastating news of their own. In 1975, their 12-year-old son Steven was diagnosed with leukemia.

“He stayed at Vancouver General Hospital. The Children’s Hospital wasn’t around back then. There were 32 beds on that fl oor,” Marie recalled. “Some parents couldn’t be there all the time and had to leave their kids. I spent time rocking little ones to sleep. It felt good to settle them down and to help other mothers who couldn’t be there.”

At age 14, 25 months after his diagnosis, Steven sadly lost his battle to cancer.

“It was one of the hardest things. You wonder ‘how you can get through this?’ But you do with prayers and friends.”

Unfortunately, it would not be the last cancer battle the family would fi ght.

In 2003, Marie fought and beat breast cancer. Then in 2009, Hank was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “He had eight biopsies. His urologist joked that his fi le was so big he couldn’t carry it any more. He said Hank wore out

the equipment and should buy a new scope for him.”

Grateful for the good care received, Hank and Marie offered to purchase the equipment. Undaunted at the $25,000 cost, they donated the funds to VJH Foundation for a new urological scope at VJH.

At age 72, Hank was diagnosed with leukemia. Thankfully, his treatments were successful. “When my husband was cured from leukemia he was the happiest guy,” said Marie. “He was looking forward to travelling, but it just didn’t work out.”

Sadly, in 2010, Hank was diagnosed with bone cancer. With tears in his eyes, he told Marie to ‘see to it that there is money for research for cancer to help others.’ Hank passed away the following year at age 76.

In Hank’s memory, Marie has donated a generous gift of $100,000 to VJH Foundation supporting the McMurtry-Baerg Cancer Centre.

Despite the challenges she has faced throughout her life, Marie continues to volunteer with the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Auxiliary as she has done for the past 20 years, fi lling many roles within the organization, including public relations coordinator, candy striper program coordinator, and prize coordinator for silent auctions and the annual Christmas Bazaar.

“Our community is very giving. We have a nice tower at the hospital that is well-equipped,” she said.

With a daughter and three grandchildren, friends and a caring community, Marie has much to be thankful for. And members of our community can be thankful for her enduring compassion and spirit of giving.

“You have to help people. There are a lot of ways you can do things,” she says. “Many times I see somebody outside the hospital waiting for a ride down the hill. I tell them to cancel the taxi and save some money and I drive them myself. I think about how hard it was what we went through with Steven and just want to do something to make things a little easier for people going through hard times.”

A Legacy of Love & Caring

Hank and Marie were married September 27, 1958
