Beijing may be over but the countdown is on to the UK Special Olympics which are in Leicester next March -- and there will be a record Highland entry.

And teenage Dingwall swimmer Ionutsa McCelland is a gold medal favourite -- after grabbing gold in the butterfly event in the World Games in Shanghai last October.

Ionutsa, who is coached by Linda McCulloch and Stephen Meeks, has been supported by

Dingwall Swimming Club and trains with the rest of the Highlands’ Special Olympics swim squad at Inverness Aquadome on Saturday afternoons.

Lesley Jones, Inverness, administrator for Highland Disability Sport, reveals:”We’ll have a party of 124 competitors, coaches and carers at Leicester -- which is up from 104 at the last Special Olympics in Glasgow four years ago.

“Tulloch Homes are our main sponsor while Highland Council have also been very generous as fundraising is always a battle.

“Ionutsa is a terrific swimmer who could hold her own outwith the learning disabilities category. We’ve great hopes for her at Leicester.”

Sports at the Special Olympics include athletics, sailing, basketball, table tennis, swimming, golf and football.

Ionutsa and the rest of the Highland team are looking forward to the opening ceremony in the Walkers Stadium on March 25. Keep up to date with their progress in ‘Imag”.

The 7000-plus attendance at Barry Wilson’s testimonial match with Liverpool last month ended one fundraising sequence -- but another one is just round the corner.

For defender Richard Hastings is the next Caledonian Thistle player to be granted a testimonial -- and the first Canadian to be granted one in Scottish football!

Born in Prince George, British Columbia, Richard spent his early years in Vancouver before the family crossed the Atlantic and he became a pupil at Millburn Academy and was still at school when he made his debut for Nairn County in 1994.

A year later he was snapped up by Caledonian Thistle and has gone on to clock more than 335 appearances for the club.

Former Caledonian Thistle director Roy Maclennan, managing director of Highland Office Equipment, is secretary of the testimonial committee which has just been assembled.

“Now that Barry’s game is past, we can put the focus on the fact that 08-09 is Richard’s testimonial season”, reveals Roy.”We’re lining up a golf day and a dinner and the actual show game is pencilled in for next summer, with enquiries already underway to secure quality opposition.

“Richard’s been an excellent servant to the club, coming through the divisions with them, and he deserves a bumper testimonial. He’s been a consistently quality performer who is still very much a key player.”

Richard had a year at Ross County in 2001 then played UEFA Cup football while with Grazer AK and MVV in Austria before returning to Tulloch Caledonian Stadium in 2003.

He’s heading towards his 50th cap for Canada as the Maple Leafers battle it out with Mexico, Honduras and Jamaica in a group section in the CONCACAF qualifying phase for the 2010 World Cup finals. The group is in full swing with Richard hoping to play at Honduras on October 11 and Jamaica on November 19.

Hastings clocked up his 300th appearance for Caley Jags against St Mirren in May 2007-- being the third player to do so, following Ross Tokely and Charlie Christie. Roy McBain joined that select group in the opening game of this season against Aberdeen.

Richard is still only 31 and extremely athletic, so all going well the 400 game mark is attainable in the next 18 months.

SportS Spotlight

New striker Steven Craig is confident Ross County can start to climb the table -- and, as the successor to 26-goal Andy Barrowman, his own finishing will be vital to that happening.

Craig, who quit Livingston in May, played alongside Ross boss Derek Adams at Motherwell and Aberdeen. He says:”There’s no point being here if you’re happy being third or fourth in the First Division. We’ve players of SPL quality ands that’s where we want to play.

“We got off to a sticky start to the season but we’ve not played badly. We were the better side at Dundee, though losing, while we were two up at Clyde before having to settle for a point.

“I’m confident we’ll soon make good progress and climb that table”.

A Shetland soap-making company is bubbling over with business growth ideas, thanks to a skills training conference provided by Highlands and Islands Enterprise’s (HIE) Learningworks website.

Shetland Soap Company will launch four new product lines this year in a bid to rapidly expand their existing operation.

The new product ranges will see the company diversify their current operation by targeting new consumer markets through the development of products designed specifically for men and babies.

‘Black Ice’, the first men’s skincare range to be launched by the Shetland firm, will include body wash, soap bars, traditional shaving soap & foam wash created for men in fragrance and strength.

‘Honey Baby’, a range of products enriched with aloe vera and organic honey, will see the company promote soothing natural products for sensitive baby skin.

The company’s other two new ranges, ‘Winter

Berries’ and ‘The Night Before Christmas’, aim to strengthen the popular firms’ existing offering by providing regular customers with more choice for Christmas gifts in 2008.

The company’s decision to launch its new product lines was cemented after employees logged on to view a virtual conference aired over HIE’s Learningworks website in May.

Odie explained: “The Learningworks virtual conference was

fantastic, because it really got us thinking about brand development and marketing. And it was all done without staff having to leave the island to attend a physical conference, which can be so expensive and time-consuming.”

Launched three years ago, Learningworks is an on-line portal designed to make skills training and development easy for businesses in the Highlands and Islands region.

Learningworks Development Manager Graham Young said: “By visiting www.learning-works.co.uk, users can search through over 3,000 training courses currently in operation in the region.

“Staff training has so many benefits for businesses and it is an area HIE are determined to invest in. Not only can employees gain increased job satisfaction, skills training can be a direct route to business growth, as seen with the Shetland Soap Company.”

That is why a celebration of organic food and local produce from across the Highlands and Islands provides a tempting visitor attraction to Cawdor Castle, near Nairn, on Saturday, September 27.‘Living Food at Cawdor Castle’ will contain over 50 stalls set in marquees in the splendid grounds of the 14th century castle.Chief organiser David Broadfoot (pictured), administrator of Cawdor Castle Ltd, says:”This is our third such event and it has gone from strength to strength. The concept is enabling people to sample some of Scotland’s finest produce as well as learning where to source it along with the benefit to your health and environment.”Hugh Raven, director of the Soil Association, Scotland, says:” I think Living Food at Cawdor is a very important part of the food renaissance of the Highlands”.Richard Lochhead, Scottish Government Minister for rural affairs and environment, agrees.”The campaign to support local, sustainable food is gathering momentum. This promotes slow, rather than fast, food.“It’s clear there is a growing trend for organic food. The UK market was worth nearly £2 billion in 2006

and it is growing.”The event is now enhanced by wonderful organic lunches, with food provided from event stalls and produced on the day by the East Highlands and Moray Slow Food Convivium. An organic barbecue, with organic wine, is also on offer. The exhibition is supported by a programme of cooking demos, entertainment for all ages and some live music. The range of Highland fare at the stalls stretches from

langoustines and dressed crab from Dry Island Shellfish, to Speyside Organics’ beef and lamb, or preserves, honey and puddings from Rose Cottage Country Garden. Add the delights from Findhorn’s Phoenix Bakehouse, organic cheeses from Wester Lawrenceton, organic chickens from Killara, venison salami and smoked venison from Great Glen Game and children’s cookery lessons at Stirinn Stuff and you still have only a flavour on show at this dynamic event.A £4 ticket gains entry --- children under 16 free on the day -- not just to the event but also the gardens -- the castle has a walled garden dating back to the 1600s, a flower garden from a century later and, between the castle and Cawdor Burn, a wild garden laid in the 1960s.You can upgrade your entry ticket to access the castle itself. With its medieval tower, it was the private fortress of the Thane of Cawdor with additions, mainly in the 17th century, in the Scottish vernacular style. The fortress will now be ‘foodie heaven’ -- and a real family fun day.

Castle’s princelyfare! The era of mass produced food has triggered increasing public interest in local produce as an option carrying superior quality, taste and greater value. Supporting such producers also underpins small local businesses and strengthens communities.

BeautyInverness now offers the luxury skincare range used by Angeline Jolie, Madonna, Kylie Minogue,

Jennifer Jopez and Claudia Schiffer -- not to mention George Clooney and Tom Cruise!

The Angel Beauty Salon, in Church Street, opened on July 1 and proprietor Laura Williamson and all her team are fully trained therapists in Yon-Ka, choice of the stars.

“We are the exclusive Yon-Ka professionals in Inverness and it’s proving extremely popular, helping our new salon get off to such a successful start”, says Laura.

Yon-Ka is labelled the ‘haute couture’ of skincare, what it does is use four distinctive plant therapies plus a special needs therapy which together produce an ‘integrated botanic science’ process for a selection of face and body treatments which benefit your skin from all the goodness of the plant world.

For instance, there is a deep regenerating facial to re-energise the skin after exposure to the sun or during pregnancy, the meonopause or ill health. Or

‘Escale Beaute’ is simply 35 minutes of wellbeing and relaxation with citrus scent combined with true lavender fragrance to leave your skin stimulated and re-energised.

IPL produces long term reduction of unwanted body hair. It can be used to treat most areas of the body in women and men, including the face, and is extremely safe. It offers safe and effective hair reduction for most skin types and hair colors. The IPL emits high energy pulses of light light directed at the hair follicles (hair roots where hair actually grows. The IPL emits a dual band of yellow and red light. The red light is absorbed by the pigment within the hair shaft, causing the temperature to rise with destruction of the hair folicile. The yellow light targets the blood supply to the germ cell in the hair follicle, resulting in further

inhibition of hair regrowth. The IPL usually destroys between 60-90% of growing hairs at each treatment.Who Needs it and Why:IPL uses a broad spectrum of light, making it suitable for a wide range of hair color and skin types.Furthermore, IPL treats a large area of skin per light pulse making treatment a fast and cost effective form of hair removal. How long does it take?A consultation is required to determine the cost and suitability and also the amount of treatment that is required. The cost of this is £20, which will be taken from the package cost if you were to go ahead with the

treatment. After each treat the hairs will take 7-10 days to grow out. You should then see patching as hair follicles are denatured. The best time to start treatment is early autumn onwards to have as many treatments as possible as our skin tends to be paler at that time.To allow all our I-Mag readers the benefit of this treatment we are offering a discount of 20% on full packages from now to the end if November. So don’t delay book a consultation today and start reaping the benefits. just call 01463 713632

Throwing light on hair issuesWrites Norma Brown

Having talked about hair reduction last month, I thought I would finish the topic this month with Intense Pulse Light Treatments. You might wonder what this is. Well let me explain. This treatment is definitely the best way to reduce hair growth permanently and I have been offering this treatment in the salon for the last six years, and it has proved to be very popular.

A Highland country house, built in 1710, is bringing traditional elegance with a modern twist. Dunain Park Hotel and Restaurant in six acres of splendid gardens on Inverness’s western outskirt is a city secret that is increasingly being well and truly discovered.

An 11 bedroom former shooting lodge for the Duke of Gordon, Dunain Park also has two country cottages each with two suites. But history is taking second place to the latest elegance, in bedrooms, dining room and in the proactive approach of the team at Dunain.

It’s not just a ‘county set’ hideaway any longer -- the hotel is awaiting its four-star status and is being licensed for weddings, while food is now served all day.

The message from the ‘new’ Dunain Park is that it’s a luxury venue that’s not ‘too posh’ for people to pop in for a coffee, a sandwich or a glass of chenin blanc.

Business meetings are increasingly a target -- stylish seclusion where you can get things done.

The transformation inside the stately pile began when leading business figure David Sutherland acquired it. He felt the decor needed the ‘wow’ factor and drafted in Susan and Adrian Pieraccini, formerly of Rocpool Reserve, to undertake a ravishing revamp.

Every bedroom has a view -- either right over the walled garden to the tree-lined valley or over the rhodedondron-flanked lawn, where the marquee can be sited for key functions.

“Now there has been such a stylistic investment, we’re appealing to different sectors of the market, from ladies who lunch, to private dinners to passers-by who want to check us out over a pot of tea”, smiles Sue.

“Dunain Park is a hidden gem for weddings

and we’re generating high levels of enquiries. The grounds are perfect and we can cater for up to 200 and can offer total exclusive use of the hotel and gardens in our wedding package. And we’re doing festive period dining bookings.”

The Highland Feast Festival cocktails and lunch event was held there recently and star ‘mixologist’ Andy Adams will feature in more cocktail dates in the Dunain diary. Plans are underway for a Malt Whisky Room unrivalled in the North.

From ultra-cosy lounges with Highland scene oil paintings, up to classic contemporary bedrooms with marble en suite bathrooms, plasma TVs, DVD player and iPod docking station, Dunain Park is all style and relaxation.

You can dine or have beauty treatment in your bedroom -- or simply appreciate the view over a drink on the attractively decked garden terrace. It’s a do-what-you-enjoy facility.

“Dunain Park has had a distinguished past”, says David Sutherland.”But we’ve planned and invested to give it an exciting future, as a place people talk about because of its excellence.”

Jackie Cuddy, who has been centre manager at Eastgate shopping mall for four years, is particularly busy these days.

For this spring she succeeded Fiona McBeath as president of Highland Business Women’s Club and Jackie has been masterminding their big project, Women In Business, to be held at Drumossie Hotel, Inverness, on October 1.

The Chamber of Commerce are not holding their ‘Spotlight’ exhibition this year -- so the women have stepped with a first of its kind event.

“We’re now the biggest women’s business club in Scotland, with over 170 members”, says Jackie.”There is an ever increasing number of success stories of women right across the commercial and industrial sector in this area.

“That gives us a pool of talent to tackle this exhibition aimed at giving the Highland business community an opportunity to showcase their services. We’re also offering the public the chance to get advice and support on various issues from recruitment to starting a business.

“It’s certainly not a women-only event, anyone

is welcome to come along free of charge, wander round the stands and speak to professionals, or take part in seminars and workshops which will take place throughout the day.”

Guest speakers include David Sutherland, chairman of Tulloch Homes, whose lunchtime talk is ‘The Business Future of the Highlands’.

Details of the event are at [email protected] and Highlands and Islands Enterprise is supporting an exhibition which marks the growing status and innovative drive of the Highland Business Women’s Club.

Jackie says:”Our chosen charity this year is Maggies Highland, to help the Maggie Centre at Raigmore Hospital which helps people whose lives are affected by cancer.

“And we have a fashion show lined up for November 6 at which Caley Thistle players will be among the models.” The footballers will get a kick out of that!

Bigger - with styleWelcome again to iMag -- the North’s brightest, breeziest lifestyle magazine!

And we’re working to become bigger and better. By the end of the year we’ll be stretching our geographical cover, currently from Aviemore to Dingwall, much wider. It’s about investing in success. More on that next issue.

In news, beauty, style, events, property, careers, skills, music --- whatever the topic, the iMag is where you find out what’s going on where.

Our aim is to be increasingly readable -- and bring the local lifestyle latest to your home.

Bill McAllister, EditorThink Provost of Inverness and you don’t exactly think distance running, cycling and fitness.

But the new Provost, Jimmy Gray, and his wife Liz, a bank manager in the city, are fitness enthusiasts. They’d rather exercise outdoors than wine and dine indoors at civic receptions.

Jimmy has run eight half-marathons plus the 50-mile duathlon Highland Cross -- while Liz has run and cycled the gruelling Highland Cross no fewer than 12 times.

“I get up at 6 am and three days a week I head off for a run, usually down the canalside from Tomnahurich to Dochgarroch and back”, says Jimmy, who is 60.”Though Daviot Woods is another favourite run.”

“I also like to go cycling regularly. Liz does more mileage than me and we both have trek road bikes and really enjoy slogging it out along paths and tracks.”

This summer’s holiday was a ferry from Oban, complete with bikes, and they cycled through Barra, Coll, Tiree and across to Harris and Lewis. They finished by catching the ferry from Stornoway to Ullapool -- and cycling from there home to Inverness!

“Strenuous exercise and fresh air clears your brain. It’s a great way to start your day and I’m determined that having taken over as Provost in August won’t stop my fitness regime”, says Jimmy.

The Grays, who have three children and stay in Beaufort Road, also go for sessions to the gymn and must be the fittest ‘First Couple’ of Inverness this century. Liz, a former Brownies officer and swimming coach, has run in dozens of distance races.

Jimmy has been elected by the new Independent/ Lib Dem/ Labour coalition administration but says:”I want to be as inclusive as possible. I’ve been on the other side of the fence so I know you have to try harder to build

consensus.“I think there are key issues facing the city -- with

roads a priority. What do we do about improving the A96 and A9?

“The ageing population of the area is steadily rising, and that brings issues of housing and social work. Education has a whole range of key decisions to be made. I’ve got no magic wand, and local government finance is going to be more difficult, but we need constructive dialogue and debate on these issues so we’re clear where our priorities lie.”

‘Provost Jimmy’, as friends call him in the street, is also a keen footballer -- he has played for the Over 35s team for quarter of a century and in winter he plays indoor footy twice a week. He’s also a season ticket holder at Caley Thistle, often offering helpful civic advice to the referee.....

Cheerful yet determined, Jimmy Gray is still easing himself in to the hot seat. But he likes nothing better than to come home from meetings and swop hot air for fresh air, putting his trainers on for a run.

Jim and Liz, the galloping Grays, accept his new job means more civic engagements -- but they’re adamant that they’ll still find time to keep on running!
