hasglobetrottheworldandgivenfoodiesand
fansalikethechancetodoalmostanythingin
thesky–frombreakfaststolunchtococktails.
ThebrainchildoftwoBelgianentrepreneurs,
DavidGhyselsandStefanKerkhofs,this
venture,whilesoundsamazinglyfun,is
definitelynotforthefaint-hearted.
Guestsliterallyfloatonair,withonlyasmall
platformtoresttheirfeet.Theydineona6.6-
tonnetablethatseats22persons,withchefs
andwaitersgoingabouttheirwaywitheasein
thecentre,althoughtheytoo,wearharnesses
andareadditionallytetheredtothetable.The
wholestructureissuspendedfromacrane.
Yet,nomatterhowhighthetableispiledwith
allkindsofcuisine,beingwayuphighcanstir
somelatentbutterfliesinyourstomach,evenif
itdoesn’tmakeyourheadspin.
Theorganisersacknowledgethattheyhave
seentheirfairshareofnervousguests,butit
usuallyplaysoutlikethis:Theyaregenerally
afraidforthefirst10minutes,starttorelax
afteraquarterofanhour,andafter45
minutes,starttocalltheirfriends,saying,“You
won’tbelievewhereIam!”.Andoh,byan
hours’time,theultimatequestiongetsasked
–“Where’sthetoilet?”.Shortanswer:There
isn’tone.Ifonehastogo,theentiretable,
awkwardly,goesdownwithyouforfacilities
availableonterrafirma.Sobesttousethe
lavatorybeforeyougoupinthesky.
Butnoteveryoneissqueamishaboutsky-high
dining.Thebraverones,likeKeller’sfellow
dinerJulianKeene,prefertolethisfeetdangle
intheair.“IjusthopeIdon’tdropaforkand
spikesomeone,”hechuckles.Thewaiters
werequicktoreassurehimthatextraforks,
andothernecessities,arestackedawaysafely
toprepareforsuchincidents.
Asforthemenu,theskytrulyisthelimitwhen
itcomestooptions.Fromsushitosteak
flambé,everythingispossible.OneBelgian
partymunchedontapasastheyhoverednear
theFormulaOneracetrackwatchingtherace.
InthecaseoftheAmiendiners,guestshad
dinnerpreparedbyfive-starMichelinchef,
AlainPassard,thatincludedlobster.Anddon’t
thinkthatdinnerisjustaquietandsomber
affair,either.Entertainmentcanalsobe
arranged.Theorganiserssimplyhoistanother
platformtothesameheightandanythingfrom
apianistwithagrandpianoorastringquartet
canprovidethatspecialtouch.
Todate,thecompanyhashostedmorethan500events.Withover25partnersallovertheworld–Spain,Germany,UnitedArabEmirates,Australia,ItalyandTurkey,tonameafew–theaffairisanunforgettableexperiencewithanendlesspossibilityofvenuesandamyriadofbackdrops.Withthecraneeasilyrelocated,themostlogicalfollow-upquestionisthecost,asclientshavetoshelloutallrelocationandsetupcosts.

productsaredesignedandbuiltaccording
tothehighestindustrystandards.Clientsare
alsoadvisedtotakeupaninsurancecoverage
oftheeventaswellasapolicythatcovers
uncooperativeweather.Additionally,there’s
alwaysasecurityguyongroundwhoisin
radiocontactwiththecranedriver.
AfterthesuccessofDinnerintheSkyin
variouscountries,bothGhyselsandKerkhofs
decidedtobemoreadventurousandcreative.
“Thirtymonthsago,whenwelaunched
DinnerintheSky,weexplainedtojournalists
attendingthepressconferencethatDinner
intheSkywasnotafinishedproduct,but
acreativeconcept:Eacheventisaunique
experience,blendingwhathappensonthe
table,thechosenlocationandtheinteraction
betweenthesettingandthetableorother
platforms,”Ghyselsexplains.
Today,GhyselsandpartnerKerkhofshave
madetrueuponthatpromise.Workingin
partnershipwithTheFunGroup,aworldwide
leaderinthistypeofactivity,guestscannow
lookforwardtoMeetingintheSky,Showbizin
theSky,andMarriageintheSky,allofwhich
haveaddedtotheexcitementofeatingwhile
floatingonair.
MarriageintheSky,inparticular,trulyelevates
(nopunintended)theexperienceofamarriage

ItisnotsomethingIspendtimethinkingabout,butIguessfatemusthave
someroletoplayineveryone’slives.However,youneedtohaveaims,behard
workinganddedicatedtogettowhereyouwanttobe,tomeetthoseaims,

What has been your biggest challenge? How did you overcome it?
Inmotorracing,eachyearthereisanewchallenge,racestobewon,
championshipstochallengefor.Formula1isthepinnacleofmotorsport,
sowinningtheFormula1Drivers’WorldChampionshipwasnaturallythe
biggestchallenge,butasIwascomingupthroughtheseriestherewereother
challengesthatwereasbigtomeatthetime.
Who are your favourite heroes in real life?
Iwouldn’tcallthemheroes,butthereareahugenumberofpeopleIrespect
massivelyforwhattheyhaveachievedintheirlives,suchasAyrtonSenna,
