TheAustralianResuscitationCouncil(ARC)hasdiscussedthelatestresearchandreleasednewguide
lineson31stDecember2010.
WhileoverallthechangesrepresentaminoradjustmenttothewayCPRistaughtanddeliveredwithin
Australia,itisbelievedthatthesechangeswillsimplifyeducationofCPR,maintaincommonalitybyall
bodiesteachingCPR,andenhanceoutcomesfromCPR.
The
new
resuscitation
changes
for
Surf
Life
Saving
will
be
introduced
to
all
training
and
assessments
fromJune1st2011.

our Surf Life Savers are provided
with the most recent information
on Lifesaver Training and Rescue
Techniques for the aquatic envi-

childrenagedbetween1yrand8yrsold.
FollowingnewguidelinesprovidedbytheAustra
lianResuscitationCouncilandadvicebyourNa
tionalMedicalAdviser,theLSChasendorseddefi
brillationonchildrenbetweentheagesof1yrand
8yrs.
Fordefibrillationonchildrenitispreferablethat
theAEDhaspaediatriccapability.IftheAEDdoes
nothavepaediatriccapability,anadultAEDmay
beusedsolongasthedefibrillationpadsarenot
touchingeachother.

EarlydefibrillationisanimportantlinkintheChainofSurvivalandisacomponentofthebasiclife
supportprocessDRSABCD. Defibrillationinvolvesdeliveringanelectricshocktoreverttheheartto
itsnormalrhythm. DefibrillationoftheheartbyfirstaidpersonnelhasbecomepossiblewithAutomaticExternalDefibrillators(AEDs)
DefibrillationSafety
Safetyconsiderationsinclude,butnotlimitedto:
OperatorshouldbetrainedintheuseoftheAED.
Thepatientmustbeunresponsiveandnotbreathingnormally
Removeanymetallicjewelleryneartheelectrode
sites.
Donotplaceelectrodesovermedicationpatches.
Avoidelectrodecontactwithanymetalsurface.
Operators&bystandersmusthavenocontactwith
thepatientduringdefibrillation.
DonotoperateAEDinanexplosiveenvironment
(e.g.wheregases&fumesmightbepresent)orina
wetenvironment(e.g.rain)wipedownthechest
beforepositioningelectrodes.
Moveapatientlyinginwatertoadryarea.
NEWIfthepatienthasanimplantedpacemaker,
makesurethepadsareleast8cmawayfromit.
Useonlyequipmentthatiscompatiblewiththe
unit.
Donotoperateincloseproximitytomobilephones,
radiosetc.

patientsandifrequiredcansupportanumberofpatientsinthe
water.
Toprotectthepatient,keepthepatientontheseawardsideof
theboardwheninthesurfzone.Thiswillensureyoucankeep
aneyeonanyincomingwavethatmayaffectyourrescue.
Ifyoudolosecontroloftheboard,ensureyoumaintaincontrol
ofthepatientastheyarethefirstpriorityaheadofequipment.
