As part of HAECC’s Options class, students must participate in a “work stage” to com-plete their program. Thanks to the support of our technician Ms. McKenzie, our stu-dents were able to visit and explore two local businesses. Two of our students, Sha-nia and Marcil spent a day with La Fabrique Jositos in St-Louis de Gonzague, this small family business, operating since 2017 spe-cializes in making all natural fruit based popsicles and other sweet treats! https://www.facebook.com/lafabriquejosito/The options class also had the opportunity to visit, EBSU a local cabinet making busi-ness in St-Louis, from the visit, one of our students will complete their stage with EBSU. A huge thank you to Ms. McKenzie for setting up these fun work experiences. http://www.ebsu.ca/en

Laurie’s SIS class and partner Melissa’s Sunshine Camp had a fun day making bath bombs for Mother’s day, with local artisan and shop owner Mary Sullivan. Students were able to pick their own scents and create bath bombs for their moms! All the products are ethically sourced, and are made without harmful chemicals. For more information about Mary’s shop and her products, visit her website or swig by Serenplic-ity in Ormstown. https://www.facebook.com/mysoap-shoppe/?ref=br_rs

HAECC held their semi annual Plant Sale on May 18 & 19. The sale has grown significantly over the years and it was no surprise to see people lined up into the parking lot waiting for the doors to open Friday morn-ing. The Horticulture students were hard at work helping and advising community members on the best plants and flowers for their gardens. A big thank you to the Horticulture team for making this event such a success!

HAECC Graduation We held our Ceremony of Success on May 31st. Sixteen of our adult education students graduated with a DES for completing their secondary studies. We also had several students who obtained the qualifications to move on to vocational training programs. Several other students will be returning next fall to continue their studies after a very successful school year.We also celebrated the achievements of our SFIS/Options students and those attending Melissa’s Sunshine Camp. These students have been working hard on developing their autonomy, preparing for volunteering or entering the workforce but most importantly, they have been developing their skills to become great citizens. Our guest speaker was a former HAECC student and Nova graduate in Welding. Mitchell Thurston stole the show with the story of his struggles with academics, anxiety and getting through school. He credited his amazing educators at HAECC and Nova for his success today since he has a lovely family and a career that he enjoys and can be proud of.Our valedictorian was Jessica Deslauriers who told her story of perseverance since she attended school in French all her life – including adult education. Since she was having very limited success in school, a friend told her to try HAECC in English even though she had very limited English skills. She obtained her qualifications at HAECC to be able to enter the nursing LPN program at CVCEC. Jessica just completed her stage at HAECC with our Sunshine Class and will soon graduate from the LPN program and thus will have obtained two diplomas from our centres.

Our Horticulture students just returned from their two-week stage placement.

Our students loved the places where they worked and are highly motivated to get into the workforce or start their own business.

The Huntingdon students will be completing their program at the end of June and

our horticulture students in Listuguj will complete their program at the end of July.

HeritageMadame Julie, Ms. Erskine and Ms. Jennifer’s classes attended the Droulers/Tsiionhiakwatha Archeological site on a class trip. Students learned about native living conditions in the 15th century. Around the year of 1450, 400 indigenous people established a village along the La Guerre River (now the municipality of Saint-Anicet) and 500 years later, archaeological excavations have unearthed 15,000 artifacts. The site includes an interpretation centre with permanent exhibits, as well as a life-size reconstruction of part of the Iroquoian village.

Ms. Jennifer’s Grade 3 and 4 classes were busy at work making healthy brownies for Mother’s Day. Thanks to the Green Apple Grant, students had the opportunity to get their hands dirty in the kitchen. The class selected a brownie recipe with a secret healthy ingredient of zucchini. This project not only was a chance to learn outside of the class, it also allowed students to apply their math fraction skills. Each student took a brownie home for his or her mom!

Their program believes in helping young men and women to be productive autonomous members of society, who are conscious of increas-ing sustainable development awareness and training them to enter the work force through recycling enterprises. They teach young adults that they have the power to make a change to encourage sustainable development and promote recycling, ener-gy efficiency, and water conservation.

Improving the environment, one drying rack at a time! CVR Grade 8 science students are constructing clothes drying racks in partnership with CVCEC. It all started with a class discussion on how a drying rack can reduce their home energy consumption, which reduces their environmental footprint. CVCEC carpentry teacher, John Hodges is guiding the students throughout the process of building drying racks and at the same time informing them of all the possible future trade opportunities available to them upon their graduation.

Ocoa 2018For eight years, we have given the staff and students of CVCEC the opportunity to broaden their horizons, to learn in a new unique environment by travelling to San Jose de Ocoa in the Dominican Republic for one of their place-ments. We partner with Georgian College in Ontario for this experience. This community in the mountains is our base as we travel to remote villages to offer health care clinics in the local

schools. These communities do not have any medical services and often have illnesses common to the region such as parasitic intestinal illnesses, fungal skin infections, hypertension, workplace injuries and inadequate diets. Our teaching team have common professional and personal values, as we encourage our stu-dents to embrace a new perspective on health. Many places in the world do not have the same standard of health as Canada. People struggle with illnesses that no longer exist in Canada be-cause we have clean water, access to health services and preventative health teaching. - It is a very humbling experience, it takes you out of your usual comfort zone and it does leave you in

awe. It’s a life-changing experience and you make lots of new friends and lasting memories.”-“A very good experience that everyone should have.”

- “(It’s) the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, the most eye-opening experience I’ve ever had and it changed my way of thinking.”

Grow and HealThrough a grant from the (CHSSN) Community Health & Social Services Network, the Grow & Heal initiative came to life. Grow & Heal is an opportu-nity to improve mental health in individuals through working together in nurturing, planting and caring for plants while connecting the life of a plant to the student’s own lives. Students became more aware and understood the need to also nurture, give time

and care towards themselves in order to promote a healthy mind and body. “Participating in this project really gave me a new perspective on mental health and how to deal with it.”

Graduation 2018The CVCEC grad-uation was held at CVR, and again was a great event, much attended by students, parents and friends.

Nova Career Centre partnership with HSBThe staff of Auto, Welding, Interior Decorating and SVIS of Nova collaborated with the HSB team in creating artwork for the Butterflyway Landing Zone Project. We will continue to contribute to this exceptional project funded by the David Suzuki Foundation as the year progresses. “A Butterflyway is a highway of habitat for butterflies, bees and beneficial bugs.”

Open House at the NOVA Career CentreOn Saturday, May 19, we held a Nova open house for the Alumni who were going to the HSB 50th anniversary weekend festivities. Not only were they blown away by the facilities at Nova – but the over 200 hundred people that went through were impressed by the pro-grams we offer, the amazing professionalism of our staff and the state of the art facilities. Three administrators and seven teachers escorted visitors on personal tours of our fabu-lous Centre. Many visitors reminisced of the old Adult Centre and marveled at how much it has changed over the years.
