Executive ReportThe 2008-2009 season was both tumultuous off the field and an unmitigated success on the field. It is easy to forget that only a few short years ago the St Ives Senior Cricket Club were no longer able to field an A grade side and struggled to fill the top grades with quality players. This year we have not only managed to field sides in the top 4 senior grades but we managed to finish in the top 4 in three of these grades; with A grade falling just short but improving on their wooden spoon finish from last season. This is on top of our Grand Final showing by our C Reserve side and our top 4 finish by our D Reserve side.

Unfortunately due to the St Ives Junior club moving in to another cricket association the last few years have been a hard slog in recruiting adequate numbers for the senior ranks. By the admission of the junior club, a number of younger players are lost to the game after they finish their stints in the age groups. There is work underway by both the club and the association to attempt to bridge this gap; with exploration in to the possibility of entering a Colts side and fielding junior sides in our own association are underway. The success of this endeavour could largely determine the future success of the senior club. Some thanks must go to Nathan Tilbury of Berowra who has put a lot of time and effort in to this endeavour.

In addition the club has driven a new management plan to help oversee all areas of administration. This runs from selection policy, committee duties, captaincy roles and recruitment and retention policies. It is hoped that this all-encompassing plan will begin to reap rewards over the coming seasons and make cricket a more enjoyable experience for players and a smoother job for volunteers and administrators.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of all the volunteers who help make the club what it is. Every volunteer contributes a great amount of their own time in to allowing players to get on the field and enjoy themselves. To Bob & David who spent countless hours running the club; Mark Wallace who always gave a hand and was always the last to leave the clubhouse; Judy Gussey for her tireless work as registrar and Jeremy, Alex, Peter, Rod and Marty who were a big help. Jeremy will also be taking on the secretary role for next season and we wish him the best of luck in this new role.

Major Club Awards WinnerClubman of the Year Mark WallaceThis award was introduced in 1981/82 and is presented where a Club Member is deemed in the opinion of the Executive, to have done more for the Club, over and above what is expected, whether it be for administration, support or fund raising activities

Most Improved Player Michael SolomonThe “Danny Callinan Memorial Trophy” was introduced in 1985/86 upon the tragic death of a very talented young cricketer and is presented to the player who in the opinion of the Executive has shown the most improvement throughout the season.

Most Promising Cricketer Nick GordonBest Newcomer Nick SmithMost Promising Junior Tom CaruthersThis award was inaugurated in 1997/98 and is donated annually to the Club by Martin Grosvenor. The award is presented to a St Ives Junior Cricketer who also plays Senior cricket in the same season and has demonstrated potential to advance through the grades. The Encouragement Awards are NOT runners-up in the major award. These are given to St Ives Junior cricketers, who play senior cricket, demonstrate a willingness to improve their skills and therefore are worthy or encouragement to continue in senior cricket.

Recruitment & Development ReportA recruitment and development plan and action schedule will be a priority section of the Management Plan. These are draft Guidelines which, with Committee input, will provide a basis for this section of the Plan.

Status: Our stated aim is for a fair competition for players of all levels and ages and accordingly we maintain at least one team in each grade from A to D registered in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai District Association.Within these teams there are currently players with ages spanning nearly four decades. Objectives:General objectives:

•To ensure the ongoing strength, success and stability of our Club;•To maintain the number and spread of teams necessary to provide satisfaction to players of all ages and ability that choose our Club for cricket as their summer sport;•To provide for the development and mentoring of cricketers in transit from Junior/ school cricket to Senior cricket;•To fully utilise the excellent cricket facilities we are fortunate to have;•To ensure we have the strong management, captain and member base necessary to achieve a healthy level of growth in the next 3 years.

Specific objectives: The 2009/10 target is a short term objective aimed at increasing the current membership by a net 5 %. Without varying from this aim, we are placing a focus on recruiting players moving from the junior ranks who wish to enjoy Club cricket and also providing for some to play at a high level within the Club competition or as District representatives.Future objectives: In developing our objectives for 2010/11 we will set growth membership targets and examine the feasibility of including junior membership from the HKHDCA feeder area.

What St Ives Cricket Club offers: Convenient location: Our Clubhouse is located at Hassell Park in Sydney’s upper North Shore. Facilities: We offer facilities of a high standard for club cricket including a professionally maintained home ground with 3-5 nets, bowling machine, regularly maintained Club kits and a Clubhouse. In addition we have weekly access to turf and synthetic wickets in three Sydney suburban Council areas.Player Development: U23 players: new players on joining and existing players prior to the start of the season will be interviewed by the player development sub-committee (2 members) to establish their current performance level and their goals for 2009/10. A report will be prepared for the selectors and progress reviewed with them after each 6 games. The opportunities for representative cricket will also be explored. All players are welcome to discuss their goals with the player development sub-committee.Skills and confidence in umpiring and scoring are part of the development program.Competition: In the 2008/09 Season we were in the top four teams in 5 out of the 6 grades we competed in. We were also active in the District U 19 and over 23 competitions and encourage our management and members to support the District Representative competition. Training: As above we have permanent facilities for training in the immediate pre-season and season and have group training sessions at times to suit our players. The net sessions also give an opportunity for players to develop their skills with senior players, if they wish.Mentoring: we recognise the need to understand, mentor and continue the development of our young members. We undertake to provide this and have a number of players that have taken the path from junior to senior cricket with St Ives, including preparation for District Reps, and are able to relate to players new to senior ranks.Maturity: St Ives Cricket Club has a proud history; It was founded in 1926, as a foundation club of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association.Future orientated: We aim to recognise the dynamic and changing nature of our chosen sport and our Plan is to align our events with the needs and aspirations of our members.

Performance Reportit was pleasing to note a number of very good junior players made their way in to the senior ranks this season. Andrew Crosland, the winner of the Barker 1st XI cricket scholarship plied his trade for A grade and A2’s until he left to England and will be returning in December. Mitch Horrocks and Rob Konstantopoulos from Kings 1st XI both filled in during the season; Mitch is a superb off-spinner and good middle order bat and took 5 wicket at 8 in his two matches, whilst Rob scored 100 runs at 33 in his 3 innings. Tom Carruthers also filled in from our junior club in B2’s for 3 matches, scoring 77 runs without being dismissed. Finally, Riann Raubenheimer played in both our C2’s side and for our B2 side in the semi-final, including a superb spell of quick bowling (finishing with the figures of 1/13 off 7 overs – which included 4 maidens).

Looking beyond our junior ranks, it was nice to note the influx of some high-skilled new players to our top grades. These include James Louw who scored a magnificent double ton to knock off the Association Turf record for highest score in A Grade and finished 2nd in the overall aggregate for A’s. James is a former First Class cricketer and brings a touch of class and resolve to our higher grade. Dale McAndrew migrated from Berowra where he topped the bowling and batting award last season. Jason Kinnane came in to the club from to add some firepower in our bowling & batting department. Scott Mawson came in to our C2 side (after a few games last season) and set the grade alight by topping the batting and bowling. Andrew Terry dominated at times in A Reserves finishing with a very handy 319 at 35. Dan Brown, Carl Sommerville and Ruan Jordaan were both great inclusions in our top grade and I have a feeling both will set the top grades alight, now that they have a season under their belt.

The biggest positive for the club certainly came in the form of batting at the top end, which has been a real weakness over the past few seasons for the club. A grade had 2 of the 3 leading run-scorers in the association for most of the season (until Stephen Karrasch was unfortunately injured), whilst A Reserves finished with 5 of the top 10 bats in the association, including the 3 of the top 4. Hopefully we can consolidate this new found strength at the top with some more consistency with the ball

In previous seasons we have struggled with the bat and we looked to rectify this with new-comer James Louw scoring 435 runs at 43.5, including a magnificent double ton – breaking the association record for highest score on turf in A grade. Stephen Karrasch was hot on his tail until an unfortunate calf injury, scoring 326 runs at a very healthy 36. Unfortunately, beyond this the batting was a bit inconsistent with some of the top order bats struggling to gain form. Whilst the batting was certainly a big improvement, the bowling was unfortunately very lacklustre this season. Only 3 players managed to reach double figures in the wickets column with Rowan Pryor taking the bowling award with 18 wickets at 21. Unfortunately, without much bowling depth throughout the club this will be an area that we need to focus on going forward. Dale McAndrew and Jason both performed admirably and Mark Wallace was excellent when filling in with the ball. Chris Brown was excellent with the bat and solid as always behind the stumps.

This season St Ives decided to enter a side in A2’s to bolster the depth of our A-grade squad. With exactly two confirmed players at the time of entry, it was always going to be a struggle to get numbers on the park. Our start to the season pretty much summed up our performance throughout. With 9 players, and a last minute mate filling in we managed to defeat Galston-Glenorie rather convincingly, despite some slip-ups.

The side managed to put together an immense season with the bat, with five of our batsmen in the top ten of the Association. Both Alex Langley and Graeme Terry totalled over 500 runs and this ultimately drove us in to the Grand Final with both of these players starring in our Semi and Grand-final performances. Unfortunately, we ultimately fell short due to a slight lack of depth in our bowling. David Akins and Gareth Horne were both excellent throughout the season with the ball, with Gareth pipping David for the bowling award.

If we can keep the nucleus of the squad together, with the addition of a couple of bowlers, I believe we have a strong case to go ahead as favourites for next season’s title. I would like to thank everybody for their efforts throughout the season. Nick Gordon was superb with the gloves, taking the Association wicketkeeping award (for all grades). Andrew Terry starred through the second half of the season. Dan Weeks and Mark Wallace will both be pushing for A grade spots next season. I would also like to thank Nick & Alex Smith, Carl Sommerville, Andrew Crosland, Dan Brown, Rajneesh Kumar and Nevin Nath who all made valuable contributions throughout the season.I hope to see everyone next season!-Ben Gussey (manager).

B Grade started the season with a rather rag-tag collection of fill-ins. Comprehensive victories in round 1 and 3 (with round 2 rained out) could not hide the inconsistent line-ups on the park and with 3 straight losses we looked to be in for a long season. Fortunately, with the recruitment of Raj Kumar, some excellent performances from Alex & Nick Smith, Mark Wallace, James Lander, Hamish Cameron and the continued improvement of Ruan Jordaan we managed to string a fantastic series of 7 victories. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of these results was the expectation that we would struggle before the season commenced. Instead we managed to knock off the premiers and runner-up in that run, in a very comprehensive fashion.

Ultimately we fell short in the semi-final to a perceivably weaker side. Whilst it was a disappointing end to the season, the amalgamation of a couple of grades should provide more depth and consistency to the line-up going forward. Along with Glenhaven, we were certainly the most skilled side in the grade – now we just need to develop more consistency.

Happy off season, and I look forward to seeing everyone again next season.

Similarly to A Reserves and B grade, B Reserves struggled to put players on the park. With shortages of 2 or 3 players in the first few rounds, we looked close to being demoted. Six losses and a draw in our first 10 rounds (with our first win coming in round 5) had us on the back foot. However with more consistent line-ups coming in to the fray and some excellent contributions from a number of players, we managed to string 24 points in our last 4 rounds to claw our way in the top 4.

Unfortunately a very poor batting performance saw us go out to the minor premiers Hornsby. To our credit, after being knocked out for 43, we had them at 7/34 and all out for 84. A declaration in the second innings saw them chasing 76 and we ended up going down by 5 wickets. It was a very gutsy performance given our poor start to the match.

The bowling award went to Mark Newell who picked up 15 scalps at a very good rate of 9.8, whilst Hemadri had a great season with the bat, knocking up 284 at 31.5. Ross Le won the MVP award coming in just behind Hemadri for the batting, with 306 runs at 25.5.

I would like to thank all the players who stuck with the team through some trying times and it showed some real mettle for us to not only compete but to string consistent performances together and take a well-deserved semi-final spot.

Our C Reserves side showed the value of being able to string together a consistent line-up, with by far the least amount of players used throughout the season. Despite a first round loss, it was clear from the outset that St Ives was the strongest side in the competition and this was reflected by taking the Minor Premiership by 16 points.

Stand-out performers for the season included Scott Mawson with 538 runs at a deflated average due to an imposed restriction and 31 wickets at 15.58. Warren Collins was outstanding with 350 runs at 38.89 and he nabbed the bowling award with 22 wickets at 11.83. Gary Kashiwagi scored 298 runs and Matthew Dewstow took 23 wickets. Will Cleland was as good as ever, taking 21 wickets at 13. Jeremy Chenu netted 22 dismissals and was excellent behind the stumps. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect was the improvement of Michael Solomon took the club’s most improved award with a 14 wickets at 13 and 379 runs at 25.

Unfortunately, despite our strong efforts throughout the season, much like our A Reserves, we went down to a weaker West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook side in the Grand Final. With the core squad continuing on next season, it is hoped our side will progress through the grades and continue the very strong showings on offer this season.

After four rounds and a few mediocre results, the Association decided to drop our side down to D Reserves. This was a surprise given that the side had a number of players who were perceivably too strong for the grade. Unfortunately, we did not quite manage to capitalise on this and despite a solid showing in coming third, we were knocked out of a Grand Final berth by WPHC.

James Cameron was very impressive coming in to the side and knocking up 244 runs at 61 and also performed admirably when promoted to B grade. Nathan Olsen was as consistent as ever with 243 runs and 11 wickets. Yianni Velkou took out the bowling award with 15 wickets, just ahead of Sam Whiteley and Sean Desmond. Phil Bromley was consistent with bat and ball, knocking up 177 runs and taking 9 scalps.
