We change students lives through an individual approach to learning and focus on developing real skills to prepare students for a successful future.

Through our partnerships with peak sporting organisations and elite clubs, students in Year 11 and 12 are provided with industry opportunities they will not find anywhere else.

We have a strong history of our students successfully completing their senior secondary education and Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications that are nationally recognised. Students graduate from SEDA as mature, resilient, independent and capable young adults with the ability to both lead and work within teams. Our students are well placed to make informed choices about their next step towards employment or further study.

Over 300 students are currently enrolled in SEDA programs in Western Australia.

WE WALK ALONG SIDE YOU AND INVEST IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL JOURNEYOur ‘one teacher’ to ‘one class’ approach allows our teacher/trainers (teachers) to take on a true mentoring role, where they get the time to know you and your individual aspirations. They take the time to support you as you learn through your own experiences and define your own journey.

Once we establish your career goals, we’ll identify and support you to source appropriate industry placements to help you get real world skills and training.

You will be supported to develop an individual career plan which encourages you to see opportunities that will develop the skills necessary for your future pathway. You will also develop a professional portfolio of your experiences and achievements specific to your career pathway.

LEARN DIRECTLY FROM INDUSTRYWhat sets us apart from the rest is our relationships with renowned industry bodies. In addition to teacher-led activities, you will gain practical skills and enjoy a wide range of learning experiences in the industry.

We develop areas of study and curriculum with our industry partners so that you learn how to do the jobs of people already working in the industry, as well as have the opportunity to be involved in industry experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

WE GET OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM AND LEARN BY DOINGYou will learn in real workplace and community settings, directly from industry experts. You may get out of your comfort zone and make mistakes, but this is where the real learning takes place. Don’t worry, we will support you all the way.

Through our industry-based learning approach, you will acquire the skills that employers need and want. We have tailored our engaging curriculum to meet the individual requirements of each student. We’ll equip you with transferable skills that will help you climb the career ladder.

DEVELOP THE SKILLS THAT REALLY MATTERWe know from our connection to industry the key personal qualities and transferable skills that they are after. We place as much importance on developing these as academic progress.

PROGRAMS AND QUALIFICATIONS TAILORED TO A STUDENT’S INTERESTAs completing Year 12 is essential for a young person’s social, personal, and career development, the foundation of our programs is a Senior Secondary Certificate. Students achieve this by completing their Senior Secondary Education and achieving either the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) or Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA).

SEDA students also undertake Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, which develop their industry-specific skills. These VET qualifications also contribute towards their Senior Secondary Certificate.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNINGAt SEDA we empower our students to rise and become good citizens. We take the lead to spearhead greater community involvement and teach our students how to address social inequality and injustice.

We work pro-actively within the community, promoting social cohesion and equal opportunities. Through their involvement in the community our students:

› Take the initiative to help communities grow and thrive.

Students learn the theoretical aspects of various concepts or situations before putting them into practice.

AREAS OF STUDY

ENGLISHThe English unit provides you with an opportunity to develop key skills whilst studying topics all linked to your interest in sport. You will enjoy preparing and delivering presentations, developing your skills in the digital space and studying texts linked to sporting topics and events. Most importantly you will see the connection with what you are studying with your future career goals and aspirations.

CAREER & ENTERPRISEStart something great by taking the opportunity to shape your career. You will understand your skills and talents and explore career pathways in real workplace settings and acquire transferable skills that employer’s value.

We work with you to help you understand the value of volunteering and building professional networks to build a portfolio that will assist you with your career aspirations and goals.

INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENTOur students get a head start in their careers through Workplace Learning which they undertake one day a week in allocated terms. Students gain a good understanding of the duties they might be expected to perform in the workplace and they’ll acquire the skills that prospective employers need and want in their employees. Our year 11 students complete a placement in the Sport and Recreation industry and our year 12 students have the opportunity to explore placements in other industries to broaden their experiences and employment prospects.

OUR CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO TEACH YOU THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO EXCEL IN A JOB IN THE INDUSTRY.The Sports Programs offer of a range of study areas that are specific to the students’ passion for sport and are focused on developing skills for life after SEDA.

THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICERYou will have the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for turning your passion for coaching into a successful career. In addition, you have the chance to network with SEDA’s sporting partners and leaders in the industry to learn coaching principles and develop coaching sessions. You get to hone your skills in a real world environment in a junior development capacity. You will also have the chance to develop your planning and collaboration skills, and learn how to communicate proficiently with both large and small groups.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION STUDIESYou will explore all aspects of fitness and sport including fitness testing, anatomy/ physiology, data analysis, energy systems, training principles and more. You’ll receive valuable information on athlete training and development from leading industry professionals from state and national sporting bodies.

Through a range activities that enable you to take on the roles of leaders, coaches, analysts and planners of physical activity, you develop skills that can be utilised in leisure, recreation, education, sport development, youth work, health and medical fields.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES PEAK INDUSTRY EXPERIENCES You will also benefit from the other opportunities that our partner organisations provide. These opportunities include assisting at match days, events, competitions and tournaments. This provides you with valuable work experience in your preferred industry and an opportunity to expand your professional networks.

DEVELOP YOURSELF AS AN ATHLETEYou will be provided with the opportunity to work on your own game and develop key skills in training and game sense sessions.

You will focus on performance training, skill development, tactical sessions and fitness training in your chosen sport and across a range of other sports. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to work with a range of industry professionals, coaches and current athletes to enhance both your sporting skills and academic performance.

SAMPLE STUDENT TIMETABLEStudents attend SEDA five days a week, completing a timetable that will look similar to the one shown below.

Up to three days a week, students complete the classroom based component of their qualifications. The other two days of the week focus on practical, and industry-based learning activities.

Students who have successfully completed their studies at SEDA have been offered positions at a number of universities and TAFEs.

We have strong partnerships with the following universities, who offer our graduates entry into nominated courses.

MURDOCH UNIVERSITY SEDA has been partnered with Murdoch University since 2014, enabling SEDA graduates to articulate into their OnTrack programs. The partnership agreement provides SEDA students, who have successfully achieved their WACE, with the opportunity to attend Murdoch University and complete a range of Bachelor degrees or Diploma courses.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME AUSTRALIAIn 2016, SEDA announced the extension of its partnership with The University of Notre Dame Australia, taking it into its fourth year. This agreement gives SEDA graduates (who have achieved their WACE) preferential selection into the University’s Pathway Program. The programs are designed to ensure students develop the skills and confidence for successful transition into undergraduate studies at the University.

JESSE TIPPETCOMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER SUBIACO FOOTBALL DISTRICTSEDA gave me the opportunity to network within the industry and work with elite sporting clubs.”

During his time at SEDA, Jesse really found his passion when he secured his work placement with the Fremantle Dockers in their community goals department. He was put in charge of running a six week after school program and the experience gave him a boost in confidence and prepared him for the job he would undertake once he graduated.

As a Community Development Officer with the Subiaco Football District, Jesse is in charge of all primary school and high schools in the district. He is also responsible for organising programs, setting up clinics and managing the casual staff. He says he is well prepared for such a demanding and varied role because of his time at SEDA.

RACHEL MCIIHENEYSTUDYING A BACHELOR OF HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (SECONDARY) AT

THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME“SEDA helped me realise my passion for education and

helped me decide that I want a career as teacher.”

Rachel was drawn to SEDA because of the hands on learning environment and the great connections with

industry partners. She believes her work at Netball WA instilled her with a sense of professionalism and helped

her find a pathway she was passionate about.

While at SEDA she became more independent and self confident which has really helped her upon

commencement of studying a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education at the University of Notre Dame.

Her plan after university is to teach physical education in a high school, and she is grateful for all the

opportunities given to her while at SEDA.

HUDSON HERRONEVENTS SERVICES OFFICER PERTH GLORY FC“The work placement opportunities at SEDA were great and ultimately helped me get my dream job”Although he was a good student, Hudson was never fully engaged at school and felt the more practical environment of the SEDA program would suit. He believes the work life skills aspect really helped him to flourish and improved his communication skills, which sparked his interest in event management.

Whist at SEDA, he completed his work place learning with Football West in their Media Communications Department.

While studying at university, Hudson gained an internship with Perth Glory FC and eventually turned it into a full time position. As an Events Service Officer, he is responsible for organising family fun days, corporate events, match day activations at Hyundai A-League Games and working at the Foxtel National Youth League matches.

Hudson says the skills he learnt at SEDA – professionalism, leadership and communicating with a range people really helped prepare him for a job in the sports industry.

JENNY HOYEBACHELOR OF EDUCATION AT MURDOCH UNIVERSITY

“All the opportunities SEDA provided me with really helped me decide what I wanted to do for my future.”

Jenny’s biggest achievement while at SEDA, apart from being the flag bearer for Australia at the Ashes, was

the instrumental role she took in creating an all-female cricket team, Coburn Lakes, which she captained to the finals in their first year. Encouraged by her teachers and

those around her, the decision that there needed to be more opportunities for females to play cricket led her to build relationships with local clubs and showed her the

importance of networking with industry partners.

After graduating SEDA, Jenny completed the On Track program and she is now studying a Bachelor of Education at Murdoch University. Jenny credits SEDA with giving her

a sense of direction, instilling self confidence and providing her with the leadership skills required to follow her passion.

BRIANNA HUDSONEVENTS ASSISTANT FREMANTLE DOCKERS FOOTBALL CLUB“The SEDA program opened my eyes to many areas of the sporting industry and really helped my develop my confidence and direction for my future.”

Brianna thought SEDA was a great fit for her based on the hands on approach to learning. Throughout her time at SEDA, she completed placements at TV networks Channel 7 and 10 and volunteered at a variety of Fremantle Dockers events.

Brianna decided upon graduating SEDA to study a Certificate III in Events and combines her study with her position as Events Assistant for the Fremantle Dockers. Brianna is involved in major events such as game day, corporate functions and family fun days.

JACOB SPURRCOMMUNITY CRICKET OFFICER – WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CRICKET

ASSOCIATION (WACA)“The SEDA program taught me that many things in life

are possible – you just have to work hard for them.”

Jacob really believes that he found his feet while attending SEDA and credits the program with helping him discover

his passion and career path. The hands on environment allowed him to try different things and gain valuable experience, especially through work placement with

Southern Cricket in Leeming.

The event management units he studied in the SEDA program were invaluable. Jacob now studies a Bachelor of

Commerce at Curtin University. He hopes to get into sports marketing or sports management once he graduates. Jacob

combines his studies with part time work as a Community Cricket Officer at the WACA, a position he gained through

networking at school. Jacob encourages other students like him to take every opportunity SEDA offers,

make connections and create pathways for yourself.

DANIEL BAKERCURATOR WACA“My current role at the WACA is entirely due to the work placement opportunity I received in my final year at SEDA.”

What truly impressed Daniel about SEDA was the great work placement opportunities the program provided and the chance to work with high profile sporting associations.

He thrived in his work placement role and the opportunity to learn form experts in the industry. Daniel is now working as a Curator for the WACA and enjoys preparing world class pitches for international and state matches.

HAYLEY THOMPSONABORIGINAL YOUTH COORDINATOR –

ABORIGINAL HEALTH COUNCIL OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA“SEDA surrounds you with people who challenge and motivate you.”

Hayley was a quiet and diligent student at school and PE was her favourite subject. When she heard about SEDA through the Fremantle Dockers Football Club,

she was excited at the idea of linking her education with sport and she felt it would be a huge benefit in pursuing

a career in the industry.

During her time at SEDA, Hayley completed her work placement at Netball WA where the experience taught her

a lot about working in an adult work environment.

Hayley is currently employed full-time as an Aboriginal Youth Coordinator in WA and is responsible for

establishing and coordinating the state-wide youth network and promoting and sustaining a youth

presence within the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Member Services

across the state.

ROBERT FLOWER SCHOLARSHIP

Students completing their senior secondary studies at SEDA have the opportunity to apply for the

Rob Flower Scholarship.

Rob played over 270 games for the Melbourne Football Club and believed in supporting the community. The Rob Flower Scholarship offers financial assistance to

students who demonstrate certain ideals including community service, commitment to education,

leadership, equality and loyalty.

The Rob Flower Scholarship is not a merit-based scholarship. SEDA assesses the skills, interests and

attributes of candidates applying for this scholarship. Students and their families may have to attend an

interview to discuss the application.

MADALAH SCHOLARSHIPSEDA in partnership with MADALAH are pleased to

offer Indigenous students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. The scholarships and the extra

support services provided to students assist with improving educational outcomes for Indigenous youth

and to empower them through leadership, and other personal and professional development opportunities. MADALAH is the main provider in WA, of educational

scholarships for Indigenous young people.
