Forthoseofuswhohavecoveredmanyoftheseevents,itwasatypicalroyalengagement.Ontheblustery,grayafternoonofSeptember9,2015,inTweedbank,Scotland,about1,000people,includingschoolchildrenwavingflagsandabrassbandplayingPharrellWilliams’s“Happy,”gatheredtowatchthe89-year-oldQueenElizabethIIofficiallyopenthenew$500millionScottishBordersRailwaylineconnectingEdinburghwithsmallercommutertownstothesouth.September9,2015,wasalsothedayElizabetheclipsedQueenVictoria’s63-year,seven-monthrecordtobecomeBritain’slongestreigningmonarch.Thequeenandherstaffhadbeendownplayingtheoccasionasjustanothermilestoneinalonglistofachievements.“Businessasusual,”ishowtheyputit.Therestoftheworldbeggedtodiffer—morethan63yearsonthethrone
