CLICK & CLACK Muffler Is Growing Hair BY TOBIN BARNES I have a dog’s vision of para- dise in my house. It’s a virtual manifestation. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t believe in magic anymore, but my dog most certainly does. As for me, long ago I realized that even when extraordinary things happen, there’s always a perfectly reasonable explanation, even if we don’t know what that might be when it happens. It’s kind of…oh well, someday we’ll figure out the why and the wherefore. It’s just a matter of time and science. That’s not the reality my dog Molly is living, however. From her viewpoint, just about everything is miraculous. Dogs, I think, live a life of wonder, which has its negatives and its positives. The negatives include Molly’s inability to rationalize the terror of thunder and lightning. These and other natural phenomena she just has to hunker down and endure, like why the heck that mean dog plagues her existence when she just wants to be friendly. And the positives? Well…they’re wondrous and innumerable, like a veritable host of angels. Alleluia! Those positives begin and end with humans, which, to dogs, are spiritual avatars of divini- ty. It’s like the witticism, “A dog thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me. They must be gods!” But then “a cat thinks: Hey, these people I live with feed me, love me, provide me with a nice warm, dry house, pet me, and take good care of me. I must be a god!” We used to have cats, but now we have a dog—maybe for self- esteem reasons. After all, as Holbrook Jackson said, “Man is a dog’s idea of what God should be.” And, evidently, we’re fitting the bill. Whenever we put food in her bowl, it makes our dog excited— so much so that it’s like Molly’s thinking: “Hey, that’s just what I wanted!” And when we take her for a walk, she’s absolutely thrilled and seems to be thinking, “Hey, that’s just what I wanted!” And when the gas stove comes on after it’s gotten a little chilly and Molly goes to lie in front of it, it’s kinda like, “Hey, this place is perfect. It’s just what I wanted.” As an unknown author has said, “The dog is the only animal that has seen his god.” To Molly, we are it—perhaps in some sort of dogmatic duality. Not only that, but we provide her with intermittent visions of heaven…and that’s every time we open the refrigerator door. Nirvana is right there in Molly’s glistening eyes and in her absolutely rapt worshipful devo- tion. As I open the door, it’s as if I have said, “Let there be light,” and there it is, displaying everything a dog could ever want. But then the door closes again and the vision ends, as all visions must. The door stands in the way until the gods open it again—not only the door to heaven but all those darned doors. I’ll never forget the Gary Larson “Far Side” cartoon of these dog scientists dressed in lab coats (no pun intended) conducting experiments and writing mathe- matical equations on a blackboard trying to decipher the complexi- ties of opening a door knob. Alas, this and so much else is out of reach of dogs, but one thing most certainly is firmly in their control: bringing uncondi- tional companionship into our lives. As Samuel Butler said, “The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” Amen Tobin Barnes, a high school English teacher, gets his skewed viewpoints of life from staring too much at Crow Peak, which looms above his home a few miles outside Spearfish. KNOWLEDGE IS PREVENTION Some Important Facts You Should Know About Colorectal Cancer! Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States after lung cancer. More than one-third of colorectal cancer deaths could be avoided if people over 50 had regular screening tests. Most colorectal cancers begin as polyps. (Polyps are growths on the inner wall of the colon or rectum.) People who have polyps or colorectal cancer do not always have symptoms. Screening tests are so important because they can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best. When colorectal cancer is detected in the earliest stage of the disease (Stage 1), the survival rate is greater than 90 percent. Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Screening tests can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Risk increases as we age. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with age. In fact, most cases (92%) occur in people 50 and older. Both men and women are at risk. Muffler Is Growing HairBY TOBIN BARNES

I have a dog’s vision of para-dise in my house. It’s a virtualmanifestation.

Now don’t get me wrong. Idon’t believe in magic anymore, but my dog most certainly does.

As for me, long ago I realizedthat even when extraordinarythings happen, there’s always aperfectly reasonable explanation, even if we don’t know what thatmight be when it happens. It’s kindof…oh well, someday we’ll figureout the why and the wherefore. It’sjust a matter of time and science.

That’s not the reality my dogMolly is living, however. From herviewpoint, just about everything ismiraculous. Dogs, I think, live a lifeof wonder, which has its negativesand its positives.

The negatives include Molly’sinability to rationalize the terror ofthunder and lightning. These andother natural phenomena she justhas to hunker down and endure, like why the heck that mean dogplagues her existence when shejust wants to be friendly.

And the positives?

Well…they’rewondrous andinnumerable, likea veritable host ofangels. Alleluia! Those positivesbegin and endwith humans, which, to dogs, are spiritualavatars of divini-ty.

It’s like the witticism, “A dogthinks: Hey, these people I livewith feed me, love me, provide mewith a nice warm, dry house, petme, and take good care of me.They must be gods!”

But then “a cat thinks: Hey,these people I live with feed me,love me, provide me with a nicewarm, dry house, pet me, and takegood care of me. I must be a god!”

We used to have cats, but nowwe have a dog—maybe for self-esteem reasons. After all, asHolbrook Jackson said, “Man is adog’s idea of what God shouldbe.”

And, evidently, we’re fitting thebill.

Whenever we put food in her

bowl, it makes our dog excited—so much so that it’s like Molly’sthinking: “Hey, that’s just what Iwanted!” And when we take herfor a walk, she’s absolutelythrilled and seems to be thinking,“Hey, that’s just what I wanted!”And when the gas stove comeson after it’s gotten a little chillyand Molly goes to lie in front of it,it’s kinda like, “Hey, this place isperfect. It’s just what I wanted.”

As an unknown author hassaid, “The dog is the only animalthat has seen his god.”

To Molly, we are it—perhapsin some sort of dogmatic duality.

Not only that, but we provideher with intermittent visions ofheaven…and that’s every time weopen the refrigerator door.

Nirvana is right there inMolly’s glistening eyes and in herabsolutely rapt worshipful devo-tion. As I open the door, it’s as if Ihave said, “Let there be light,” andthere it is, displaying everything adog could ever want.

But then the door closes againand the vision ends, as all visionsmust.

The door stands in the wayuntil the gods open it again—notonly the door to heaven but allthose darned doors.

I’ll never forget the GaryLarson “Far Side” cartoon of thesedog scientists dressed in lab coats(no pun intended) conductingexperiments and writing mathe-matical equations on a blackboardtrying to decipher the complexi-ties of opening a door knob.

Alas, this and so much else isout of reach of dogs, but onething most certainly is firmly intheir control: bringing uncondi-tional companionship into ourlives.

As Samuel Butler said, “Thegreat pleasure of a dog is that youmay make a fool of yourself withhim and not only will he not scoldyou, but he will make a fool ofhimself too.”

Amen

KNOWLEDGE IS PREVENTION

Some Important Facts You Should Know

About Colorectal Cancer!• Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States

after lung cancer.

• More than one-third of colorectal cancer deaths could be avoided if people

over 50 had regular screening tests.

• Most colorectal cancers begin as polyps. (Polyps are growths on the inner

wall of the colon or rectum.)

• People who have polyps or colorectal cancer do not always have symptoms.

• Screening tests are so important because they can find colorectal cancer

early, when treatment works best.

• When colorectal cancer is detected in the earliest stage of the disease

(Stage 1), the survival rate is greater than 90 percent.

• Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Screening tests

can help prevent colorectal cancer by finding pre-cancerous polyps so they

can be removed before they turn into cancer.

• Risk increases as we age. The risk of developing colorectal cancer

increases with age. In fact, most cases (92%) occur in people 50 and older.

• Both men and women are at risk.
