Hello! I hope you are getting ready for the spring weath-er and all the new life that comes with it! Spring al-

ways seems to be an exciting time of year as we prepare ourselves and our gardens for the coming months.

I see many comparisons between life at

the office and gardening. Our Annual LIFE Dinner is a yearly time of tilling the soil in our pro-life garden. We are preparing for the com-ing months of Mother’s Day roses, our mem-bership picnic, booths at various fairs, and Pro-Life Awareness Month. It is important to ready ourselves for future growth. Next our scholar-ship contest gives some students in high school

a little shot of Miracle-Gro to help them culti-vate the little seedlings as they go off to do pro-life work on campus. And our monthly mem-bership meetings are similar to the regular weeding that happens (or is supposed to hap-pen). It helps to maintain the garden the same way that the monthly meetings help maintain our pro-life spirit.

While I do not claim to have a green

thumb, I do enjoy the smell of freshly turned soil and the taste of a juicy red raspberry. So I am excited to see all the growth in the pro-life gardens as well as in the outside gardens in the area!

JOIN US AT OUR MEMBERSHIP EVENT! Join us at our office Thursday April 6th at 7pm for our monthly membership event! This is open to any members or anyone interested in learning more. Our April meeting will be a showing of the documentary Euthanasia Deception. Featuring testimonies from Belgium, where euthanasia has been legalized for 15 years, this film addresses the myth that assisted suicide is a form of compassion. Come learn more about this important issue! For anyone who is unable to make the meeting, the office has a copy of the documentary which can be checked out of our lending library!

SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST

The pro-life essays have been turned in and next is the exciting time of hearing students present their speeches!

Join us at our office on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 9am as the students match off in the final steps of DCRTL’s schol-

arship contest. Each year, DCRTL has sponsored a schol-arship contest to provide scholarship to young people in the Dubuque area who would

like to continue living out the pro-life mission on the college campus. The college cam-pus can be a little hostile toward pro-life thought and it can be a challenge to stand up

for one’s belief. This essay and speech contest will help students research a pro-life issue and be able to defend their stance verbally. The theme this year is “Pro-Life Until

the End”. This is a good chance to support young budding pro-lifers and encourage them as they begin their time on the college campus.

PRO-LIFE T-SHIRT DAY– APRIL 21 Across the nation on April 21, 2017, you will find individuals from all different back-grounds representing the pro-life movement by wearing their pro-life t-shirts. American Life League has hosted this day since the 1990s with the goal of empowering all people to speak up and defend the lives of all babies. At Dubuque County Right to Life, we want to encourage each one of you to participate in this great event too. So don’t forget to mark this day on your calendar and pull out those pro-life t-shirts! On April 21, take a picture together with your family and friends wearing your pro-life t-shirts and email it to our office or share it on our facebook page! DCRTL will be giving away one of our pro-life T-shirts to the best picture taken! pro-life T-shirts to the best pictu

Pro-Life Bills Going On In Iowa There are a lot of things happening in Des Moines with our legislature and it is good to be in-formed. Here is a snapshot of the legislation that has to do with pro-life issues. In February, legis-lation declaring that life begins at conception was advanced in the Iowa Senate. SF 253, more commonly referred to as the Life at Conception Bill, was approved by a Senate subcommittee and was pending in the Iowa legislature. This bill declared that life is valued and protected from the moment of conception. It also stated that each life was accorded the same rights under the state and federal constitutions and state law. SF253 did not have enough votes in the committee pro-cess before the funnel date and so will not have further discussion this year. Another pro-life bill, SF2, has passed the Senate and is awaiting action in the House. This bill would redirect taxpayer dollars away from Planned Parenthood and abortion providers towards qualified medical clinics that do not provide abortions across the state, offering a wider array of healthcare services in more locations. We have high hopes SF2 will move through the Iowa house. SF52 is a ban on the trafficking of unborn baby parts for experimentation or any other use. There is a proposal to expand the Newborn Safe Haven laws. SF183 would allow many more in the medical field to accept a baby who is voluntarily given up. This past year there have been a handful of incidences where women have killed their children after birth out of desperation. The expansion of this law would hopefully bring about more awareness to the Safe Haven law and help to save more lives! SF269 and HF240 are bills that support adult stem cell research. They are called the Regenerative Medicine Tax Credit Bills. This would help end the perceived need for embryonic stem cell and aborted fetal tissue in medical research. The final pro-life bill is SF471 (formerly SF53) which is a 20 week abortion ban. This bill has exceptions that allow abortions for instances when the child has a fetal anomaly marked incom-patible with life and to preserve the life of the mother. It is hard to support something that still allows for the killing of innocent children. At the same time, this could save the life of numerous children while we continue to work at ending abortion at all stages of pregnancy.

Bill To Defund Planned Parenthood Bill S. 241 was introduced in the Senate in January of this year. This bill, also known as Protect Funding for Women’s Health Care Act, has been referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. It prohibits the federal funding of Planned Parenthood and its affiliates. It was introduced by Republican Senator Joni Ernst, from Iowa and is cosponsored by 27 other sen-ators, including Chuck Grassley from Iowa. Another similar bill, H.R. 354, was also introduced in the House of Representatives in January of this year and has since been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce as well as to the Subcommittee on Health. This bill, also known as the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2017, prohibits, for a one-year period, the availability of federal funds for any purpose to Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates, unless they certify that the affiliates and clinics will not per-form and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs an abortion during this peri-od. However, this restriction does not apply in cases of rape, incest or where the health of the mother is in danger. For this one-year period, additional funding will be provided for community health centers. This bill was proposed by Diane Black, a Republican representative from Tennes-see and is cosponsored by 136 other representatives, including Rod Blum from Iowa as well as Peter Roskam, Randy Hultgren, John Shimkus, Darin LaHood, and Rodney Davis from Illinois. Other local representatives who support the bill are Glenn Grothman, Sean Duffy, and James Sensenbrenner from Wisconsin. We are grateful to our elected officials from the area who are spreading our pro-life voice to Washington.

OUR LADY OF LIFE,

PRAY FOR US.

Trump’s Offer to Planned Parenthood

This past month President Trump made an informal proposal to Planned Parenthood offering that they keep their federal funding if they would stop doing abortion proce-dures. Planned Parenthood’s response was not positive. Planned Parenthood’s executive vice president Dawn Laguens said via twitter “Offering money to Planned Parenthood to abandon our patients and our values is not a deal that we will ever accept.” Planned Parenthood claims abortions are only 3% of what they do yet they are willing to let go of millions of dollars of funding in order to keep performing abortions. This shows that Planned Parenthood is in this business to keep doing abortions no matter what the cost.

On February 27 of this year, the Coalition of Pro-Life Leaders, a united group of ten, pro-life organizations in Iowa, announced their new life-at-conception initiative and it’s being called “She’s a Baby” campaign. This campaign engages video, radio, and grass-roots involvement to inspire fellow Iowans in their fight to defend all life. “That’s the heart of the new She’s a Baby campaign,” said Maggie DeWitte of Iowans for LIFE, a CoPLL member. “Because by now we’ve all heard the arguments about abortion. And people

have understandable concerns. But there’s one truth no argument can argue away: That little girl in her mother’s womb? She’s a baby.” For more details about #ShesABaby, including audio of the radio ad and the #ShesABaby video, visit ShesABaby.com.

WITTICISMS OF THE WISE

We learn a lot of things from our elders: family stories, history lessons, secret family recipes, etc. Here is a way to share those little memories and sayings and to pass them on to the next genera-tion. Our culture has started a push toward legal-izing Physician Assisted Suicide and one of the groups most in danger is the elderly. This section is a way to say thank you to those that have gone before us and to let them know they are loved and their lives are important.

The following quote was submitted by a faithful member. He received this tip from an old Dutch man whom he met while traveling in South America. “A whole day can be ruined by overcooked noodles!” If you would like to submit a funny story, witticism or piece of wisdom please send them to the office, email [email protected] or call 563-556-5960.

DCRTL has a lending library with many great books and videos on a variety of life is-sues. Maggie, our intern, has been working on updating our records and making the library more user-friendly. One of the things we are looking for is new up-to-date books. Below is a list of some new books we are looking to add to our collection. One way to participate in our mission of educating on life issues would be by adding to our collection! Books can be dropped off at our office (2205 Carter Rd).
