SUMMARY: Photographs made by writer-photographer William P. Gottlieb, from 1938 to 1948, often on assignment for the Washington Post, Down Beat magazine, and Record Changer. Images document jazz musicians and venues, primarily in Washington, D.C., and New York City. Prominent jazz musicians photographed include Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Earl Hines, Billie Holiday, Stan Kenton, Ray McKinley, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Mary Lou Williams, among others. Lesser-known jazz musicians are also well-documented.
