I am proud to present the third issue of Life magazine! It was a real pleasure to create it and to look back on all the fantastic experiences we had during the summer term and remembering the students who made these moments so special. First there were the KIC games in Glasgow with 24 sport loving students making it an unforgettable

trip. Then we had the Boscars, put together very professionally by Media students. These are just two of the many great events that took place.

Without our enthusiastic students, it would be impossible to produce a magazine like this. Thumbs up to all students who got involved with social activities, I am missing you already! A big thank you goes to our PE students who became journalists for this edition. Let their articles be an inspiration to others to contribute to the magazine.

I’d like to think Life magazine has something in it for everyone. If you are an alumni student, I hope you will fondly look back at your time at the college and if you are a future student I hope it will fill you with confidence that you made the right choice to study with us. If you are a current student, you may reminisce about good times, but at the same time be excited about the move to the new building and unpacking your things in your brand new home.

As a new academic year is about to start, an exciting time is ahead for all of us. Do you want to write about your experience? If you’d like to get involved in the next issue of Life Magazine, please email me at [email protected]

Enjoy your read!

Glasgow, MayIn May it was time for the annual KIC Games, a sporting event for all eight Kaplan Pathways Colleges in the UK. During the games, the colleges compete against each other in football, basketball, badminton and table tennis. The overall winner receives a large cup. Glasgow International College won the cup last year and was therefore the proud host of this year's games.

After many hours of training and a lot of preparation, we got ready for the epic journey to Glasgow on Friday morning 14th May. 24 students accompanied by members from the student services team got onto an executive coach to Scotland. After a long day on the road we checked into our comfortable hotel rooms. We then went out for the evening entertainment, which was brilliant fun. GIC had put on an evening of Scottish dancing for us. Welcomed by a Scotsman playing bagpipes at the entrance, we entered a beautiful hall set up with tables and chairs on the side and a huge dance floor in the middle. The professional Ceilidh band taught us a variety of dances. At first some of the students were a little hesitant, but it didn't take long before the room was filled with laughing students and staff dancing the night away! All that dancing made us hungry, so when we returned to the hotel it was time for pizza before going to sleep.

The next morning after a hearty breakfast we went to the sports venue. The football teams spent the day outdoors on the pitch, while the basketball, badminton and table tennis players stayed in the sports hall. In between and after the matches, there were fun games to take part in as well, including tug of war & challenge event. At the end of the day we all reunited in the sports hall for the results. Our football team just missed out on the final as did Gigi in the women’s singles table tennis. Shao-Yi, Maria, Kim and Susan won the challenge event however! Dingran, Gigi and Tracy got lucky and won vouchers in the prize draw. Sheffield International College was crowned winner of the KIC Games 2015. Bournemouth received praise from other colleges for their incredible sportsmanship and being such a fun and social group.

After dinner and cake at the Students’ Union it was time to head back home. The event was a great experience for all, and we're very grateful to GIC for organising such an amazing event. Back in Bournemouth all 24 students received well deserved medals and certificates from Ian Jones, Head of Regional & Community Partnerships at Bournemouth University.

Bournemouth, JulyOn July 17th, our Foundation Media students put on a fabulous event known as the BOSCARS. This was the second year for the event to take place at the college. It was the student's opportunity to showcase the amazing films they produced, edited and acted as part of their Media course. To promote the event they created film posters and even a special Facebook page: www.facebook.com/buintcol.oscars

With the help of Media tutors Sabrah & Vicky they organised an event like the Oscars, with awards for best film, documentary, editing & sound, actor & actress. On top of that, prizes were given for best dressed and most originally dressed person. Tickets were sold to students at £2 each to raise money for our charities Plan International and Linwood School which support children in education. A grand total of £95 was raised for charity through the event!

BOSCARS

The dress code for the evening was Heroes &

Villains or Glamorous. Guests entered the

venue by walking the red carpet while our organisers handed out

programmes and voting slips to them. Among the

guests were Darth Vader, Cruella de Vil, the Joker, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent

and various handsome men in tuxedos and beautiful ladies in

evening gowns. After everyone helped themselves to drinks and

popcorn it was time to watch the nominees and to vote for their

favourites. After the interval the winners were announced.

Best film was awarded to the 'Gifts' by Gigi, Edward and Chi. Best

documentary went to 'Alex the Kid' and best editing and sound design was awarded to 'Nightmare'. Hoijin (Edward)

Son won the award for best actor for his part in 'The Gifts' and Anastasiia

Tychinskaia took home the prize for best actress for her role in 'The new student'. We are very proud of all Media students for

organising the event and cannot wait until it's time for Boscars 2016!

Bournemouth, JulyWhen this world famous tennis tournament was taking place in London, we got in the mood for our own little competition! A quiz to learn fun facts about the Grand Slam and a ball game that proved harder than it looked! It certainly felt like a real tournament with about a third of all our students taking part on the day. Of course we had to have strawberries & cream to stay with the Wimbledon tradition. To complete the British feel of the activity we bought luxury English biscuit tins for the lucky winners of the event. Sasi (1st), Veerach (2nd) and Amy (3rd) won the prizes.

Bournemouth, JulyMuslims around the world celebrate Eid to mark the end of Ramadan. Did you know there are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, making up nearly a quarter of the world’s population? As an international college we couldn’t let this important event pass by without a celebration.

We put up our own version of a Bedouin tent and filled it with Arab cushions, rugs, pottery and other decorations including a camel. We got traditional pastries and baklava from a local bakery for everyone to indulge in. Saudi students Awdah and Nafea brought in Arabic coffee, dates and homemade cakes to share to complete the feast. In our college, Eid was celebrated by students from all nationalities and religions. Arabic students showed Asian, African, European and Latin American students how they celebrate Eid and the importance of this festival to them. Teachers joined in too and listened to students’ stories over coffee and sweets.

Poole, JulyOn July 23rd it was time for our annual boat trip together with our colleagues from Kaplan International English in Bournemouth. After last year’s success we decided to get a larger boat this year for an even bigger and better party!

150 Students and staff took a ride in an open top bus before boarding the vessel at Poole Quay. It was a lovely sunny summer evening, perfect to be out on the water for a cruise along the beautiful coast line and Brownsea Island. Some students were chilling outside and enjoying the scenery of the Jurassic Coast, while others were showing off their best moves on the dancefloor or chatting to friends while sipping a drink from the bar. At 10pm all eyes turned to see the spectacular fireworks display just off Poole Quay, the finale of an epic night!

Student writersFor the first time our very own students became journalists! In groups of 4, they have written a piece for this edition of the magazine. All students involved are currently studying Preparatory English with the aim to get on to a Pre-Master’s programme.

Situated outside the town on the road from Bournemouth to Boscombe is Ocean City. This is a large Chinese restaurant on the ground floor of a hotel. This is the place for Dim Sum (a Chinese dish or meal consisting of small pieces of food wrapped in sheets of dough) in Bournemouth! It has a large variety of Dim Sum available. It’s best to go as a large party or family to truly have a taste of everything on offer as this is what Dim Sum is all about! Running alongside the Chinese menu, they have their standard menu with the usual dishes you find in other Chinese restaurants, should Dim Sum not be your thing. This restaurant really does cater for everyone! It’s a popular place for the local Chinese community, so they are doing something right! It looks tidy with a smart interior, comfortable furniture and friendly staff to welcome you. If you are after a Chinese restaurant, look no further, you have to give this place a try!

Review of Ocean City RestaurantWritten by: Janny from Thailand, Nathan, Riane & Hilary from China.

Nathan: In my opinion, Ocean City is the best Chinese restaurant in Bournemouth. The atmosphere is authentic and the interior is spectacular. The waiters and waitresses are extremely helpful.

Jane: What I like about this restaurant is not only the food, but also the friendly owner, which is why I have visited Ocean City many times with Chinese friends for lunch while studying at Kaplan.

Riane: I enjoy the taste of this delicious Chinese food every time. Our last visit was splendid with barely any wait between the courses and the service itself was flawless.

Hilary: I‘d recommend you try Mapo beancurd, Sizzling Sea Spicy Chicken Szechuan Style and Steamed Lobster in a Light Garlic Sauce. It is absolutely yummy!

Torquay used to be a fishing village in Devon. After World War 2 it began to develop into a tourist destination. It has a stunning waterfront location and a rich variety of activities. In recent years, Torquay has become better known abroad and has attracted more foreign tourists.

Aisha: I went to Torquay with a friend last year. We travelled by car, but you can also get there by train, which takes 4 hours from Bournemouth and about 3 hours from London. We stayed at The Imperial Hotel. The hotel is very comfortable and has stunning views over the sea. I found the people very friendly, welcoming and open minded. We went to see a lovely dance festival in the town where we saw people from all ages dancing.

Where to eat?As a coastal town, it has some special seafood restaurants. I’d like to recommend a restaurant named The Elephant Restaurant & Brasserie. The Elephant was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. It is located at the seaside and if you are lucky you have a sea view through the window. It has delicious food, good service and a romantic atmosphere which is why most people choose to eat there.

Torquay: a great place for a UK holidayWritten by: Aisha from Qatar, Elaine & Kaka from China & Tola from Nigeria

JetlagGavin: You may find it hard to deal with a jet-lag when you arrive here. What I recommend is to stay up on the first day. On the second day a long distance run could be good for you to improve your sleeping. After that you may feel better.

YatesJohn: If you like going out and practising your English at the same time, Yates is the place to be. In this town centre pub they have a free conversation lesson every Monday (7:00pm - 9:30pm). You can talk to both native speakers and people from different countries, which is fun and helpful.

FoodCatherine: You might not like British food. Cooking your own favourite meals would be a good way to keep a healthy diet. There is a market every Saturday in Boscombe (07:30 - 16:00), where you can buy fresh ingredients. The market is a 10 minute bus ride or 25 minute walk from the college.

If you don’t want to go far, you can go to Asda, a hypermarket next to the train station, only a 5 minute stroll. You can find everything here from fresh produce to international food from all over the world.

I highly recommend cooking with friends. It works out cheaper and it’s so much fun!

Finally, the moment is here… our college is moving to a brand new building! The new site is called Lansdowne Point, because it is the highest building in Bournemouth and set in the heart of the Lansdowne Campus of Bournemouth University. There are stunning views over the surrounding area and are a short walk from the beach, town centre and train station. At Lansdowne Point we also have our own halls of residence and restaurant. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week and for brunch in the weekend and open to everyone.

Open dayWe will have an open day with lots of exciting performances and guest speakers on Saturday 17th October. We hope to see many alumni students there as well as our new starters and continuing students, so mark this day in your diary! More information will be posted on our Facebook page.
