Keeping Standards up-to-date
Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the Standard was purchased.
Detailed information about Standards can be found by visiting the Standards Web Shop at www.standards.com.au and looking up the relevant Standard in the on-line catalogue.
Alternatively, the printed Catalogue provides information current at 1 January each year, and the monthly magazine, The Global Standard, has a full listing of revisions and amendments published each month.
Australian StandardsTM and other products and services developed by Standards Australia are published and distributed under contract by SAI Global, which operates the Standards Web Shop.
We also welcome suggestions for improvement in our Standards, and especially encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or ambiguities. Contact us via email at [email protected], or write to the Chief Executive, Standards Australia, GPO Box 476, Sydney, NSW 2001.
This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 03024.

AS 2796.2—2006 2
PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee TM-007, Sawn, Milled and Speciality Timber Products, to supersede
AS 2796.2—1999. After consultation with stakeholders in both countries, Standards
Australia and Standards New Zealand decided to develop this Standard as an Australian
Standard rather than an Australian/New Zealand Standard.
The objective of this Standard is to provide producers and users with grading rules for sawn
and milled hardwood products for use when specifying such products intended for use in
building applications.
The objective of this revision is to update the following grade descriptions:
(a) Hole measurement.
(b) Hobnail measurement.
(c) Concealed surface requirements.
(d) Colour variation within species.
This Standard is Part 2 of the AS 2796 series, which is comprised of the following parts:
AS
2796 Timber—Hardwood—Sawn and milled products
2796.1 Part 1: Product specification
2796.2 Part 2: Grade description (this Standard)
2796.3 Part 3: Timber for furniture components
This Standard describes grades for most products based on the level of feature in each
grade.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part
of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA
Australian Standard
Timber—Hardwood—Sawn and milled products
Part 2: Grade description
S E C T I O N 1 S C O P E A N D G E N E R A L
1.1 SCOPE
This Standard describes four grades for products sawn or milled from hardwood.
NOTES:
1 The coverage by this Standard of all hardwood species does not imply their availability nor
the availability of every grade in any species or species group.
2 Milled timber for window frames, sashes and sills is specified in AS 2047.
3 Timber for furniture components is specified in AS 2796.3.
4 This Standard may be used as a basis for a third party product certification scheme.
5 Natural colour variations are to be expected within a species. Some species exhibit only small
variations while in others colour varies greatly. Differences may occur between growing
regions and the age of tree may also have a significant influence. In some species, the colour
of the sapwood may differ markedly from the colour of the heartwood. Such natural colour
variations are not covered by this Standard.
1.2 APPLICATION
The grade descriptions given in this Standard are for use with the sawn and milled timber
products specified in AS 2796.1 (see Clause 1.7). The grade descriptions are listed in
Appendix A.
NOTE: A summary of the grade descriptions is given in Appendix B; however, it is not
exhaustive and does not take the place of the requirements set out in this Standard. Reference
should be made to the appropriate Sections of this Standard for a complete description of the
grades.

1.4 DEFINITIONS
For the purposes of this Standard, the definitions given in AS/NZS 4491 and those below
apply. Where the definitions in this Standard differ from those given in AS/NZS 4491, the
ones below apply.
1.4.1 Black speck
Discrete small black spots or flecks, occurring singly or in groups, affecting only the
appearance of the timber and not associated with borer holes or gum veins.
1.4.2 Concealed surface
That part of a surface intended to be concealed from view when the product is fixed into
position or assembled.
1.4.3 Exposed surface
That part of a surface intended to be exposed to view when the product is fixed into
position or assembled.
1.4.4 Hobnail marks
Small separated markings occurring in lines several centimetres long.
NOTE: The visual effect on the board may be a series of dots or a looping or scribbly marking,
sometimes with darkened areas. The appearance depends on the cut of the board.
1.4.5 Sticker mark
A mark occurring during the seasoning process, which is left under the strips, fillets,
battens or stickers and which may be lighter or darker than the rest of the surface.
1.4.6 Surface check
A check confined mainly to the surface of a piece but of no appreciable depth, that is, depth
not exceeding one tenth of the thickness of the piece.
1.4.7 Termite gallery
An irregularly shaped passage or burrow excavated by termites in the bark or wood.
1.4.8 Termite gallery, enclosed
A termite gallery that is not completely open to visual inspection throughout its entire
length.
NOTE: A gallery is enclosed unless it can be seen that no extensions of the workings disappears
inside the timber. Therefore, the grader needs to be able to clearly see all surfaces inside the
gallery and check that there are no holes.
1.4.9 Tongue, broken
A tongue reduced in its width because of mechanical damage or timber separation after
milling.
1.4.10 Tongue, short
A tongue reduced in its width because of poor milling, that is, there has not been sufficient
board width in the feedstock to allow for a full width tongue for all or part of the length of
the board.

1.5 GRADES
The grades specified in this Standard are primarily based on features and desired aesthetic
appearance. The grades of hardwood products given in Appendix A are as follows
(appropriate abbreviations in brackets):
(a) SELECT GRADE (SEL).
(b) MEDIUM FEATURE GRADE—Standard (MF).
(c) HIGH FEATURE GRADE (HF).
(d) PARQUET CLEAR.
NOTE: Some combinations of product, grade and species may not necessarily be available.
Availability should be checked before specifying.
The grading names in this Standard are not intended to indicate a ranking of quality. For
some applications and species, an increasing proportion of features may make a product
more desirable rather than less.
It is common practice for producers of timber products to use the grading rules set out in
this Standard, but to market the products under a grade name that reflects the particular
features of the various species in the geographical area of production rather than using the
grade name given here. For this reason the titles of the grades have been chosen in order to
indicate that the grades have an appearance relationship that is not strictly related to
quality.
NOTE: HIGH FEATURE GRADE is intended to display a variety of the natural features of
timber. The permissible features and their limitations on the exposed surface have been selected
to that end; therefore, it is desirable that, on the exposed surface of each board, there be at least
one of the permissible features and that, on the exposed surfaces in a parcel of timber, there be a
variety of the permissible features.
1.6 PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION
If the product is branded, labelled, stamped or otherwise marked to indicate that it complies
with this Standard, the information shall be legible and shall include the following:
(a) The number of this Standard, i.e., AS 2796.2.
(b) Identification of the manufacturer of the product (optional).
(c) The product (e.g., decking, flooring), except where the product or its application are
readily identified by the shape or profile.
(d) The grade, e.g., SELECT, MEDIUM FEATURE—Standard, HIGH FEATURE, or
grade other than those described in this Standard (see Clauses 1.5 and 1.7).
NOTE: The appropriate abbreviation may be used.
The grade title, or its abbreviation, of any grade other than those described in this Standard
shall be such that it will not be confused with one of the titles, or its abbreviation, of a
grade described in this Standard (see Clause 1.7).
NOTE: Legislation in some States of Australia requires that if timber is marked with any or all of
the items in this Clause, the timber has to comply with that marking (see also the Note to
Clause 1.7).

1.7 CLAIM OF COMPLIANCE
In any statement or claim of compliance with this Standard, one of the following shall
apply:
(a) Reference only to AS 2796.1 is a claim of compliance with the product requirements
as set out in AS 2796.1 but not necessarily any particular grade. It is also a claim that
product performance is appropriate for the intended use.
(b) Reference to one of the grades described in this Standard (AS 2796.2) is a claim of
compliance with both the product requirements set out in AS 2796.1 and the
nominated grade requirements set out in this Standard.
(c) Reference to AS 2796.1 and a grade other than those described in this Standard is a
claim of compliance with the product requirements set out in AS 2796.1 and the
requirements of the other grade. It is also a claim that product performance is
appropriate for the intended use.
NOTE: Manufacturers making a statement of compliance with this Australian Standard on a
product, packaging, or promotional material related to that product are advised to ensure that such
compliance is capable of being verified.

2.1 GRADING METHOD
2.1.1 General
Each piece of sawn or milled product shall be graded on the face, back, edges and ends, as
appropriate, in accordance with this Section, and the appropriate grade description given in
Appendix A.
2.1.2 Basis
Grading is based on visual assessment of individual pieces. The amount (size) of a feature
or group of features (within a piece) is compared to the maximum amount of that feature
permitted for the grade.
The maximum amount of features permitted are set out in a grade description. All features
in the piece shall comply with the limits given in the grade description.
Grade descriptions are primarily based on features and desired aesthetic appearance. They
are also based on utility considerations.
2.1.3 Grade limits
The grade descriptions describe material containing the maximum amount of permitted
feature for the particular grade. Each parcel shall contain a range of material such that not
all of the material contains the maximum amount of permitted feature for the grade.
2.1.4 Variation in assessment
Within any parcel, a maximum variation of 5% between the gradings of pieces by
individual inspectors or graders shall be acceptable provided none of the pieces in the
disputed 5% has features that exceed the maximum limit allowed in the grade by more than
10%.
2.1.5 Grading and profile check
A check of the grading of the timber may be required some time after the grading
undertaken by the producer or supplier.
Where the purpose of the check is to estimate the accuracy of the previous grading or
machining, reasonable allowance shall be made for changes that may have occurred since
that time. These changes may include but are not limited to—
(a) change in dimensions and tolerances due to moisture uptake or loss (swelling or
shrinkage);
(b) increase in distortion (bow, spring, twist and cup);
(c) increase in, or development of features due to subsequent processes (e.g., sanding)
and
(d) in unseasoned products, an increase in, or development of, seasoning checks, splits,
end splits and shakes;
NOTES:
1 Changes in the characteristics of timber due to moisture change can be minimized from the
time that the timber is milled by correct downstream protection, handling, transport and
storage until the timber is placed in service. The manufacturer’s wrap on seasoned product is
not intended to provide weather protection and should not be relied upon for this purpose.
2 Where timber is loosely packed or packs are broken and exposed to the weather, it is likely
the timber will be adversely affected by moisture change.

3 Critical changes may arise due to moisture change. For example, the formation of large
checks affecting the structural adequacy of the piece or excessive twist affecting the utility of
the piece. Such changes in a piece may be cause for rejection of the piece with respect to its
final application.
4 Where timber products are sanded after installation, reasonable allowance should be made for
features on the exposed surface that become larger or appear as a result of the removal of the
original surface.
2.2 COMBINATION OF FEATURES
Combination of features shall be limited in products where adequate strength is a
consideration (e.g., flooring and decking). In such cases, a combination of features shall be
permitted if the combination is less than that of one feature of the maximum permissible
size.
A combination exists when two or more features occur in a length of the piece such that
there is less than twice the width of the piece between them (see Figure 2.1). Features in
combination are not necessarily on the same surface.
The distance between the features shall be measured parallel to the length of the piece,
between lines drawn at 90° to the arrises (see Figure 2.1).
If bow, spring, twist, or cup is present in the piece, each shall be measured separately and
deemed not to be in combination with each other or with any other feature.

2.3 MEASUREMENT OF FEATURES
2.3.1 Knots
The size of knots shall be the width as measured between lines parallel to the length of the
piece enclosing the knot (see Figure 2.2).
FIGURE 2.2 KNOTS
2.3.2 Holes
The size of holes shall be measured as they appear on the surface as shown in Figure 2.3.
FIGURE 2.3 HOLES
2.3.3 Slope of grain
Slope of grain shall be determined by one of the methods described in AS/NZS 1080.2.1,
AS/NZS 1080.2.2 and AS/NZS 1080.2.3, and shall be measured over a distance sufficient to
determine the general slope (see Figure 2.4). Localized variations where the grain deviates
over less than half the surface may be disregarded. Grain deviation around knots shall also
be disregarded provided such deviation does not significantly affect the general slope
within the piece.

2.3.5 Checks other than internal
Checks, other than internal, shall be measured as follows:
(a) Width—measured on the surface at 90° to the longitudinal direction of the check (see
Figure 2.6); and
(b) Length—measured parallel to the length of the piece.
Checks are not to be confused with shakes (see Figure 2.7).
NOTE: Timber products purporting to comply with this Standard are graded visually. Some
features such as internal checks cannot always be seen by the grader; therefore, it is considered
inappropriate to include internal checks as part of the grading rules. After further profiling of the
timber (often by another party), the previously unseen internal checks may be revealed on the
surface of the newly profiled product. When this occurs, they should be assessed as ‘checks other
than internal’ because they are now on the surface. Internal checks are not considered acceptable
in some products and care should be exercised during drying to limit their occurrence.

(Normative)
A1 SCOPE AND GENERAL
A1.1 Scope
This Appendix sets out the grade descriptions of hardwood products, as follows:
(a) Paragraph A2 SELECT GRADE (SEL).
(b) Paragraph A3 MEDIUM FEATURE GRADE—Standard (MF).
(c) Paragraph A4 HIGH FEATURE GRADE (HF).
(d) Paragraph A5 PARQUET CLEAR.
NOTES:
1 A summary of the grade descriptions is given in Appendix B; however, it is not exhaustive
and does not take the place of the requirements set out in this Standard. Reference should be
made to the appropriate Sections of this Standard for a complete description of the grades.
2 The grading of a concealed surface may not be appropriate for some feedstock.
A1.2 Slope of grain—All grades
Slope of grain in hardwood products (all grades) shall not exceed 1 in 8.
A1.3 Tongue and groove imperfections—All grades
Tongue and groove imperfections in hardwood products (all grades), resulting from missing
timber (defined as short tongue, broken tongue and broken under-groove) shall be limited to
the following:
(a) Where the width of the missing timber does not exceed one half of the nominal under-
groove width—
(i) individual length of missing timber—not exceeding 250 mm; and
(ii) aggregate length of missing timber—not exceeding the lesser of 500 mm and
one quarter of the length of the piece.
(b) Where the width of the missing timber exceeds one half of the nominal under-groove
width—
(i) individual length of missing timber—not exceeding 200 mm; and
(ii) aggregate length of missing timber—not exceeding the lesser of 250 mm and

(b) Holes (of any type, including borer holes and non-enclosed termite galleries);
measured as they appear on the surface and with length exceeding the lesser of
15 mm or 1/4 of the width of the surface—not permitted.
(c) Holes (of any type, including borer holes and non-enclosed termite galleries);
measured as they appear on the surface and with length not exceeding the lesser of
15 mm or 1/4 of the width of the surface:
(i) Width exceeding 2 mm—not permitted.
(ii) Width not exceeding 2 mm:
(A) In boards of width up to and including 50 mm—
(1) not exceeding 2 holes in any 100 mm length of board; and
(2) not exceeding 4 holes in any 900 mm length of board.
(B) In boards of width more than 50 mm and up to and including 100 mm—
(1) not exceeding 5 holes in any 100 mm length of board; and
(2) not exceeding 10 holes in any 900 mm length of board.
(C) In boards of width more than 100 mm—
(1) not exceeding 8 holes in any 100 mm length of board; and
(2) not exceeding 16 holes in any 900 mm length of board.
(d) Tight gum veins—
(i) surface width measured across the feature—not exceeding 2 mm;
(ii) individual length—not exceeding 250 mm; and
(iii) aggregate length—not exceeding half of the length of the piece.
(e) Checks other than internal—
(i) width—not exceeding 1 mm; and
(ii) individual length—not exceeding 250 mm.
(f) Stains (see Notes 1 and 2 to Item (g) below)—
(i) natural discolouration and discolouration of sapwood due to preservatives—
slight.
(ii) other discolouration including sticker marks—not permitted.
(g) Black speck (see Notes 1 and 2)—slight.
NOTES:
1 The interpretation of the word slight will depend on the species being graded. The word
slight has been used, even though it is subjective, because of the difficulty in describing
what is a small or trifling amount of a feature that may create a visual impact on the
product. The visual impact of colour variation within a board will depend on a number of
factors. Slight is considered not to have a large impact on the overall appearance. For
example, a floor with considerable colour variation between heartwood and sapwood may
tolerate greater discolouration in some boards without affecting the overall appearance of
the floor. In other instances where the timber is predominantly of one colour (particularly
of a lighter tone), the contrast created by a small amount of discolouration within a board
will heavily impact on the overall appearance and should not be considered slight.
2 When it is intended to apply a paint or similar pigmented finish to a product, then
discolouration, stains or black speck need not be limited when agreed between the
purchaser and supplier.

A4.3.2 On any concealed surface
The following features are permitted on any concealed surface of HIGH FEATURE
GRADE hardwood, subject to the limitations herein:
(a) Knots:
(i) Tight knots and associated voids—
(A) size—not exceeding one third of the surface on which it occurs; and
(B) location—not within 3 mm of any exposed surface.
(i) Loose knots and associated voids—as for holes (see Item (b)).
NOTE: Timber with knots approaching the size limits set out in Item (a) may not be suitable
for flooring, light decking or other applications that require structural adequacy.
(b) Holes (of any type, including borer holes and non-enclosed termite galleries)
measured as they appear on the surface:
(i) Width, exceeding 10 mm—
(A) loss of cross-section at any position in the length of the board—not
exceeding 1/5 of the cross-section; and
(B) location—not within 3 mm of any exposed surface.
(ii) Width, exceeding 3 mm and not exceeding 10 mm— loss of cross-section at any
position in the length of the board—not exceeding 1/5 of the cross-section.
(iii) Width, not exceeding 3 mm—unlimited.
NOTES:
1 Timber with holes approaching the limits set out in Item (b) above may not be suitable for
flooring, light decking or other applications that require structural adequacy.
2 Concentrations of multiple pinhole borers with associated black stain can greatly weaken
the timber. In areas of structural importance, e.g., flooring, such concentrations should be
excluded.
(c) Tight gum veins:
(i) Quartersawn—surface width measured across the feature—not exceeding
5 mm.
(ii) Backsawn—
(A) extent across the face—unlimited; and

Standards Australia
Standards Australia is an independent company, limited by guarantee, which prepares and publishes
most of the voluntary technical and commercial standards used in Australia. These standards are
developed through an open process of consultation and consensus, in which all interested parties are
invited to participate. Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commonwealth government,
Standards Australia is recognized as Australia’s peak national standards body. For further information
on Standards Australia visit us at
www.standards.org.au
Australian Standards
Australian Standards are prepared by committees of experts from industry, governments, consumers
and other relevant sectors. The requirements or recommendations contained in published Standards are
a consensus of the views of representative interests and also take account of comments received from
other sources. They reflect the latest scientific and industry experience. Australian Standards are kept
under continuous review after publication and are updated regularly to take account of changing
technology.
International Involvement
Standards Australia is responsible for ensuring that the Australian viewpoint is considered in the
formulation of international Standards and that the latest international experience is incorporated in
national Standards. This role is vital in assisting local industry to compete in international markets.
Standards Australia represents Australia at both ISO (The International Organization
for Standardization) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
Electronic Standards
All Australian Standards are available in electronic editions, either downloaded individually from our web
site, or via On-Line and DVD subscription services. For more information phone 1300 65 46 46 or visit
