1 Executive Summary
1.1 Overview
LIC of India intends to develop an online portal for its NRI and PIO customers. The main motive of the portal is to enable NRI and PIO customer to buy LIC insurance online.
1.2 Background
Life Insurance Corporation of India (hereinafter referred to as the Corporation or LIC) is a major public sector enterprise having its Central Office at Mumbai and is the largest life insurer in India. LIC has been a pioneer in using information technology in enhancing the service experience of its customers. Currently, LIC has an internet site which serves as an information bank as well as provides for buying of policies and paying of premium online.
With regards to NRI and PIO customers, LIC as very few facilities when compared to Indian customers. LIC has a considerable target audience in other countries. For customers outside India, to buy LIC policies requires them to come to India for formalities to be completed or to buy LIC policies when LIC agents come to their respective Country and Cities. Thus the process is time consuming and not feasible for lot of prospective customers.
2 Project Scope
2.1 In Scope
The project is mainly focussed on implementing the web application of LIC customers outside of India.
Login and registration of Customers.
Buying of plan online
Submission of forms and documents
To carry out medical investigation and submission of medical reports
Providing a portal for New Business Assistants to accept the forms and documents submitted by the customers and carry out validation.
Forwarding of documents and forms within the New Business Department assigned for handling customers outside of India.
Countries associated with application will be limited to few for initial version and will be extended for other feasible countries.
Currencies and Time of different countries to be considered for financial transactions.
2.2 Out Scope
Project is limited to buying of policies online, further stages of insurance life cycle like Claim and bonuses is adjourned for future developments.
Integration of developed system into main website of LIC India.
Synchronising the payment gateway with developed application.
Integration of customers and documents database with existing databases.
Previous policy records of Customer prior to development of this application can be integrated in future.
2.3 Constrains
Current procedure of buying policies through agent or by coming to India can be impediment to online application as one customer can have more than one application for specific policy. The information and details provided by the customer during this process will be mutually exclusive from the data provided by the customer online due non integration of databases, resulting into redundant data being stored as well as customer initiating multiple processes to buy same policy.
Implementation of web based application can be a setback for LIC agents operating in foreign countries.
Language of operations to be English throughout the application.
Different countries might have different laws varying in different domains. These can be of some difficulty in certain issues.

Technological Risk associated with project can be of following types
o Scale of project
The project is being developed for customers outside India residing in different countries. The number of countries involved scales up the size of the project.
o Technology Used
Technology used for application development should be same or compatible with existing LIC website and technologies. Not doing so results might result in difficulties in future integration of application.

o Skills risk as per applications development is concerned is limited since degree of innovativeness is very minimal. Skill risk associated with application development will be during initial stages of analysis and design due to certain amount uncertainty associated with working an application in different countries.
o Employees of LIC handling the case from these customers will be prone to skill risks. These employees would require prior knowledge of handling international insurance cases as well as specific knowledge regarding legalities and documents associated with specific countries.
Political Risk
LIC of India is a Government of India undertaking hence diplomatic conditions and consequent changes between India and other countries will have to be considered.
