Author’s Night 2017

Mark your calendars for a fabulous Author’s Night series 2017! The Friends of the Library sponsor these classy events each winter to enrich the community’s literary

experience and to offer fun Friday night get-togethers during the cold months. Held at Montage Cafe in downtown Greenville where delicious food & drink can be purchased, the evening is always extra-festive with live music by the cool J.R. Price and Bill Westfall.

Y ou may want to google these authors to see what a treat we’re in for - interesting, accomplished, award-winning writers who have their own stories to tell. Author’s Night offers an opportunity to meet and get to know some of the best novelists, poets, and bloggers from all over Ohio.

January 13th is J.R. Irvin; February 17th The Greenville Poets; March 3rd Vivian Blevins, and April 7th Lee Martin. As always these authors represent a wide variety of subject

matter and styles.

Known to her friends as Jan, J. R. Irving is the 2015 Jeremiah Healy Mystery Winner for her debut novel The Dark End of the Rainbow. A career educator Jan retired in 2008

after teaching Spanish and English at Springboro High School, Centerville City Schools and Alter High School. Until recently she taught Spanish as an adjunct professor at Wright State. “Writing is my job now,” says Jan.

She is hard at work on her next book and also has served as a long-time volunteer for the Antioch

Writers’ Workshop. Her stories have appeared in both print and online journals and magazines including Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine and Spark a creative anthology.

Jan grew up near Youngstown Ohio where she says, “my father was very encouraging of my writing. He’d be so

proud.” Jan and her husband live in Springboro at the edge of a nature park where they are avid canoeists. Learn more about Jan’s novel and writing career at www.janetirvin.wordpress.com.

Year-End Giving

As we approach the holiday season we all have gift-giving on our minds! We want to make our family and friends happy and enhance their lives with our presents - thus we

spend many hours planning and shopping. Often we look outside our personal circle for charities and organizations that could benefit from our generosity, extending our giving to a broader community.

Y ou may consider the Library’s Endowment Fund for your year-end giving! This would be a tax-deductible gift that ensures longterm financial stability for the Library and guarantees its future upkeep into the next century and beyond. This fund will allow us to preserve our physical treasure and uphold our legacy of service for future generations.

T he Library’s importance is reflected in its mission statement - to provide materials and services for the recreational, social, informational, and educational needs of the community. Even in the electronic age our public libraries are needed more than ever as

community resource centers.

For more detailed information please contact John Vehre

or Susi Halley. The Fund is housed with Second National Bank and overseen by the Board’s Finance Committee. We thank you in advance for your support! Happy Holidays!

Film Series Features The Big Heat by David Nilsen

T he Big Heat was one of the most intense and gritty noir films made during the genre’s two decade prime. Arriving in the latter half of that era (roughly 1941-1959), the film displayed the moral ambiguity and unflinching violence that the neo-noirs of the late twentieth century would eventually cash in on.

T he film follows Dave Bannion, a homicide detective investigating the apparent suicide of a fellow officer. He doesn’t buy the suicide story but quickly discovers his superiors don’t appreciate him nosing around for more answers. He suspects the police brass is corrupt, serving more to protect the local crime syndicate than to uphold justice. Bannion is played with by Glenn Ford, one of the great and most underrated actors of the era.

L ee Marvin is brilliant as Vince Stone, the crime boss’s lieutenant and lead muscle, and the film displays him as an unbridled sadist. Gloria Grahame is perfectly cast as Debby Marsh his girlfriend. Grahame was an actress of tremendous (and underutilized) talent. The Big Heat is one of the very best of a classic noirs, and was directed by one of the all-time great noir directors, Fritz Lang. Lang was gifted at showing the audience the flawed humanity of his characters in an era that often depended more on style than deep character study. Consequently his crime films were deeply felt and often troubling.

I hope you’ll join us on Thursday November 17 at 7 p.m. to watch The Big Heat as part of GPL’s Third Floor Film Series. As always, free popcorn, candy, coffee, and Jones Soda will be provided, and I will be leading a brief discussion after the film.
