Do you have a teaching license and want to become a school librarian?

Our Library Media endorsement program is a 29-credit

endorsement program that prepares you to be a licensed

school librarian. Courses in this program can lead to a

master’s degree in Educational Media.

Are you interested in being a school librarian but don’t have a teaching license?

Our Initial K–12 Teaching License is one path to becoming

a licensed K–12 school librarian. Courses in this program can

lead to a master’s degree in Educational Media.

Do you have a Library Media endorsement and want to earn your master’s degree?

Our MA/MS program in Educational Media combines

advanced courses with electives and practical experience.

Are you interested in learning more about children’s and young adult literature?

Our graduate certificate in Children’s and Young

Adult Literature broadens students’ understanding of

contemporary literature, authors, illustrators, and genres for

integration into K–12 school curricula and public libraries.

Highlights of the programsThe Portland State University Library Media programs are:

• Able to be lexible and able to accommodate students with busy schedules

• Offered primarily online with periodic on-campus meetings

• Designed to encourage collegial relationships with other students

• Focused on collaboration and a great way to build your professional network

• Able to provide professional development for public as well as school librarians

• Focused on the practical application of technology, admin-istration, and research

Program admission requirementsFormal admission to both PSU and the Library Media program is required for participation in all Library Media programs.

To be considered for admission, candidates must have:

• A BA or BS degree from an accredited institution

• A GPA of 3.0 or higher

• A current teaching license (endorsement and master’s program candidates)

• Passing scores in a basic skills test (initial licensure candidates only)

• A completed meeting with a Library Media program adviser for a program of study discussion

• Completed any prerequisite coursework

The Helen Farrens Library Media Scholarship is awarded to students in the Library Media program who are:

• Current PPS teachers obtaining a library media endorsement

• Current PPS library media aides working toward a library media endorsement or license

• Students who intend to work in PPS upon graduation

The scholarship committee gives preference to applicants with financial need, previous teaching experience, and who are currently employed by Portland Public Schools.

• Successful completion of this program and passing the required subject area exam lead to recommendation to the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC)

• You may earn a master’s degree for an additional 16 credits

• This program is offered primarily online with periodic on-campus meetings
