meet Susan OrleanOctober 12, 7 pm, KCHS Auditorium

Kalamazoo Public Library celebrates its 140th anniversary with an appearance by literary journalist Susan Orlean. Her best-selling book, The Orchid Thief, was made into the Oscar-winning movie, Adaptation, starring Meryl Streep.

Her latest work, Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend, tells the story of Rin Tin Tin’s improbable journey from puppy orphaned on a 1918 battlefield to movie star and international icon.

Orlean became a staff writer for The New Yorker in 1992. She wrote dozens of “Talk of the Town” pieces, “Profiles” and “Reporter at Large” articles, plus a series of American popular culture columns called “Popular Chronicles.”

Prior to joining The New Yorker, Orlean served as a contributing editor at Rolling Stone and Vogue. Esquire, New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, and numerous others have published her articles. A University of Michigan graduate, she also teaches creative writing at NYU.

His interest in international styles led him to the oud (a fretless Egyptian lute) and the glissentar (a 12-stringed fretless guitar), instruments he now employs in many performances. KPL's updated catalog features simple searching and natural language that people use on Internet search engines. If you don't know how to spell a word, the catalog will now try to help.

New KPL books, movies and music scroll on an image carousel on the catalog home page. But if you regularly checked KPL's new items lists in the past, you can still find those in Classic Search.

Best of all, you can easily create lists! Log in to your account at the top of any KPL webpage then click My Lists. Click + to create a list, then search the catalog for items to put on your list. Use the Select an Action box to add items to a list.

Can't find what you want? Continue your search in MeLCat or Suggest an Item. Both options are easily available on the new catalog page.

Kalamazoo Public Library first opened to the public with 2,901 books on October 12, 1872, from a small room in Corporation Hall on the west side

of S. Burdick Street – twelve years before the Village of Kalamazoo became a city.

I like to imagine how excited village residents felt visiting their first public library. An early history reports that late in 1874, "we find the library ministering to its eager patrons each week-day afternoon...and all day Saturday.”

Use of the library continued to grow throughout its early years. In 1881, the library circulated 40,000 books. (Last year, that number grew to 1.6 million!) In 1890, the library’s first permanent home opened, built with a gift of $50,000 from Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Van Deusen.

Long time residents recall with fondness their visits to the first Children’s Room, with its sunny southern windows and separate tower entrance. Today’s families feel the same way about the current room, with its colorful stained glass fables and Alice in Wonderland Storyroom.

We’re honored to contribute to the library’s legacy, to continue the library’s tradition of service. And we’re very grateful for the community’s support and pride in their library. Please join us in celebrating the library’s birthday at the many special events described in LINK.
