JOB TITLE: Consultant in Emergency Medicine

DEPARTMENT: Emergency Medicine

BASE/LOCATION: All Consultants are appointed to the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. The base hospital for this post is Daisy Hill Hospital.

REPORTS TO: Clinical Director – Emergency Medicine

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Mrs E Gishkori – Director of Acute Services

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and clinically focused Consultant in Emergency Medicine in Daisy Hill Hospital, Newry, to commence as soon as possible. This post offers an excellent opportunity for newly qualified Emergency Medicine consultants, as well as existing Emergency Medicine Consultants, who wish to join a dynamic team with an excellent reputation.

PROFILE OF THE SOUTHERN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE TRUST

The Southern Health & Social Care Trust provides integrated patient / client centred services to a population of 366,000 people in the local areas of Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Dungannon, South Tyrone, Newry and Mourne.

The Trust provides a wide range of hospital, community and primary care services. General acute in-patient hospital services are located at Craigavon Area Hospital (CAH) and Daisy Hill Hospital (DHH) and acute mental health and learning disability in-patient hospital services are located in the Bluestone Unit also on the Craigavon Area Hospital site. Working in collaboration with GPs and other agencies, Trust staff provide locally based health and social care services in Trust premises, in people’s own homes and in the community.

Daisy Hill Hospital is based in the city of Newry and is an essential part of the hospital network provided by the Southern Trust and has been ranked as a CHKS Top 40 Hospital. The Emergency Medicine Specialty has a strong reputation for its focus on training and recently received excellent feedback in the recent NIMDTA visit.

Within DHH there are inpatient beds in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics (2000 deliveries per year) and Gynaecology, ENT and Paediatrics. There is a Coronary Care Unit, Surgical High Dependency Unit, a Day Procedure Unit and Radiography Department. The Wards, Outpatient Departments, Theatres and the Emergency Medicine Department are all modern, comfortable and extremely well equipped.

Support Services

A full range of Allied Health Professions is available including Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Cardiology Investigation, Dietetics and a pharmacy department on site. The Department of Radio diagnosis provides general radiographic and radiological procedures, specialised radiological examinations, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine, and CT scanning. A DEXA scanning service is available in South Tyrone Hospital. The Area Laboratory Service is based at Craigavon Area Hospital site and provides for haematology, bacteriology, clinical chemistry and histopathology. Secretarial support will be provided from within the Directorate.

Library Facilities and Teaching

Both Daisy Hill Hospital and Craigavon Area are ‘Queens University Belfast Teaching Hospitals’ offering high quality clinical placements to medical students as part of the student doctor undergraduate programme.

Daisy Hill Hospital is responsible for undergraduate medical teaching for fourth year students onwards and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will participate in these programmes. It is also recognised for pre Membership training of Junior Doctors, who are supplied by NIMDTA (Northern Ireland Medical Dental & Training Agency,) for successful for mentoring and supervising both compulsory and elective periods and is also a centre for Final MB and MRCS examinations. There are opportunities to develop research activities involving clinical work.

A Medical Education Centre with excellent library facilities, located in Craigavon Area Hospital, provided in association with the Medical Library at the Queen’s University, Belfast. There is access to electronic online medical databases, such as Med-line and Cochrane. Regular teaching sessions take place in the Medical Education Centre and General Practitioners are invited to participate in and attend meetings.

WORK OF DAISY HILL HOSPITAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Daisy Hill Hospital Emergency Department is a busy unit with around 50,000 attendances in the past year. It sees a range of conditions providing a wide range of experience for medical staff. As well as Daisy Hill Hospital, Emergency Care is also provided at Craigavon Area Hospital and the Trust also has a thriving Minor Injuries Unit in Dungannon.

DUTIES OF THE POST: Resuscitation of critically ill or traumatised patients.

The assessment treatment and diagnosis of patients presenting to the Emergency department.

Multidisciplinary teamwork and co-operation with other specialties or teams to provide continuing management.

Resuscitation and Assessment of Paediatric cases.

Emergency planning and major incident planning.

Clinical Supervision of Junior Medical Staff.

Teaching and Training of Emergency Medicine trainees.

Teaching of Emergency Nurse Practitioners, paramedics and other extended team members.

Commitment to improving the quality of care and implementing CEM standards and trust guidelines.

Clinical and professional responsibility for patients.

Keep patients (and their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.

To maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMC’s guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time.

Organisational Relationships

The post holder will be a member of a team of Emergency Physicians. It is the Trusts intention to extend the consultant team. It is intended that the new appointee shall be part of a developing rota to allow for an extension of consultant service delivery.

The post holder is expected to work flexibly with colleagues to allow for the efficient running of the department. Out of hours work, statutory leave, study leave, or any other leave must be covered equitably by arrangement with colleagues.

We will work with you to ensure the job plan is attractive whilst meeting the needs of the service.

Balance between Direct Clinical Care and Other Programmed Activities

Supporting Professional Activities including participation in training of other staff, medical education, continuing professional development, formal teaching of other staff, audit, job planning, appraisal, research, clinical management and local clinical governance activities are recognised within the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. The Trust expects that all consultants must undertake a minimum of 1.5 SPA’s (6 hours) in their job plan every week. The Trust also recognises that there are various activities as identified by all the Associate Medical Directors in each directorate and approved by the Medical Director where additional SPA time will be necessary. Where a newly appointed consultant will be involved in these additional SPA commitments, the precise balance of Programmed Activities in their job plan will be reviewed on appointment and agreed as part of their individual Job Plan review.

Programmed Activities for additional HPSS responsibilities and external duties will also be allocated for special responsibilities that have been formally approved and/or appointed by the Trust.

JOB TITLE: Consultant in Emergency Medicine

DIRECTORATE: Acute Services

HOURS: 40 hours per week which for Consultant grades and is split across 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s), however part time hours /job share may be considered.Evening and on-call work required. Weekend work is a 1:8 basis.
