In this book, the author focuses on the intersection of two major bodies of policy and practice: knowledge economy and ICTs on one hand, and sustainable economic development on the other. It aims to provide a broad-ranging account of the social and economic terrain demarcated by this intersection in order to reach conclusions and offer guidelines for policy development. Although based on the case of a developing country (Vietnam) its analyses, arguments and conclusions are of universal relevance.

In Web 2.0 users not only make heavy use of Collaborative Informa-tion Services in order to create, publish and share digital information resources – what is more, they index and represent these resources via own keywords, so-called tags. The sum of this user-generated meta-data of a Collaborative Information Service is also called Folksonomy. In contrast to professionally created and highly structured metadata, e.g. subject headings, thesauri, classification systems or ontologies, which are applied in libraries, corporate information architectures or commercial databases and which were developed according to defined standards, tags can be freely chosen by users and attached to any in-formation resource. As one type of metadata Folksonomies provide ac-cess to information resources and serve users as retrieval tool in order to retrieve own resources as well as to find data of other users.

ISSN 0300-287X

Nowadays librarianship must react to a variety of demands and constantly continue to develop itself further. As services, libraries are confronted with new challenges: new media and information technology, funding cuts, new organisational forms, new expectations in performance measurement, and quality and cost management. The goal of the series Bibliothekspraxis is to examine these processes of integration and to contribute to the perfecting of an ever more complex library service through practice-based information and experience. The series is aimed at professional librarians and students as well as career changers who have integrated various areas of the library into their work.

Libraries are extending their service offerings and work processes to include the potential of Web 2.0 technologies. This changes the job description and self-image of librarians. The collective volume offers a complete overview of the topic Library 2.0 and the current state of developments from a tech-nological, sociological, information theoretical and practice-oriented perspective.

Initiatives at a cross-cultural level, where libraries, museums and archives work together in creating digital libraries, and making their cultural heritage collections available online, are emerging. Leading academic researchers from the cultural heritage and the publishers sec-tors approach this issue: digital library user experience: a focus on current user research; digital library content: what users want and how they use it; strategies for institutions: how cultural institutions and publishers respond to the digital challenge.

In recent years the library community has seen a renewed interest in library architecture and design. This is due to the change of focus from content and collection development to how libraries engage with their users in a digital age. This means that librarians, architects, politicians and patrons must develop new visions, concepts and ideas for the design and building of libraries. This book brings together a number of articles based on presentations from the IFLA World Congress 2009: historical view of the development of children’s libraries over the last century, a look at how children use new media, libraries of the future, innovative design projects for children’s libraries from around the world.

IFLA serIes on bIbLIoGrAPhIc conTroLEdited by Sjoerd Koopman

The IFLA Series on Bibliographic Control consists of reports reflect-ing the ongoing process towards International Cataloguing Principles, which began in 2003. Through the series of meetings represented by each volume the reader will be able to track the development and con-sultation taking place throughout different parts of the world that will culminate with the creation of a truly international set of principles to guide the development of cataloguing codes worldwide.

This book represents one part of the continued development and expansion of Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. It contains a further analysis of the characteristics of various entities which are in the focus of standard data (persons, families, corporate bodies, work, expression, manifestation, item, concept, object, event and place), the definitions under which these entities are known and the standard search entries which the cataloguers create for these entities.
