Band is a year-long commitment that meets every other day for 88 minutes.

Parent permission is required to Band

Students perform for sports events and Night of the Arts.

Instruments may be rented or purchased

Practice = Homework, students are expected to practice at least 20 minutes a day.

Band Boosters support Band students through “Fair Share”

Pep Band, Jazz Band, Solo & Ensemble, Contest, and other performance/learning opportunities.

All middle grades students are required to earn a certificate in technology before leaving middle school. You must take this course in 7th or 8th

grade.

Information and Computer Technology This course combines technology and career research. Students will be eligible to earn technology certifications in web design, gaming and multi-media through this course.

Students explore media and techniques used to create a variety of 2-D artworks through developing skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage. Students practice, sketch, and manipulate the structural elements of art. Investigation of artworks from Western and non-Western cultures provide a means for students to expand their understanding and appreciation of the role of art in global culture.

Student artists use an art criticism process to evaluate, explain, and measure artistic growth in personal or group works. This course incorporates hands-on activities and consumption of art materials.

This is for the student who wants to delve deeper into art design. There are a limited number of seats available in this course (30)

Final Exam is required

All 7th and 8th grade students take a full year of P.E.

Students cannot wear their school clothes to participate in physical education.

Every student must have a PE uniform

Uniforms can be purchased at a discount rate if ordered by May 25th (shorts and a t shirt). The online form is available on the LPA website.

This course provides remediation and intensive instruction in core content areas. Placement in this courses is based on FSA scores.

Students who earn a 1 or 2 in FSA Reading will be placed in this course for additional support.

Course content for Beginning Spanish and Intermediate Spanish are equivalent to high school Spanish 1.

Students who earn a C or higher in these two courses will earn high school credit for Spanish 1. These students will be eligible to enroll in Spanish 2 in the 9th grade.

The Spanish 1 grade will be determined by the numerical average of the final grades for Beginning and Intermediate Spanish and will remain on the student’s permanent high school transcript.

Students must earn a digital certificate through ICT during their middle school career. If this course is full, students will be placed in Theatre 1.

Information and Communication Technology Essentials and Careers 2 - This course provides students with skills in multimedia production, computer animation, web page design, electronic media and other emerging technologies. Students will conduct career research to guide future decision making. Students must earn a multimedia certificate within the course.

Students who earned their multi-media certificate in2017 are not required to enroll.

Non-core options

______ Career Research and Decision Making (Student Intern). Application required. Students will support the classroom, office or media center and research careers in the field of education. Portfolio assessment required. Students who are chosen for this course may be placed in semester option which will be paired with a semester of physical education.

_____ Middle Grades Intermediate Spanish (full year)

This course is only for students who have completed Beginning Spanish. Student grades in Beginning and Intermediate Spanish are averaged for high school credit.

Students will study advanced acting, theatre history, and dramatic literature and read and write scenes and plays. Outside performances are required.

Legislation that middle school students will earn a digital tools certification each year. Why? Estimated that there will be 2 million computer science jobs that need to be filled by 2020.

What about virtual courses? Virtual courses are not taught by a live teacher. It is an option for students who are very disciplined.

Students take a virtual course through St. Johns Virtual (franchise of FL Virtual) in lieu of a traditional classroom setting.

Students report to the a specific room during the assigned period to work on virtual course.

Adult supervision is provided, but no assistance with the course.

Student is responsible for completing the course on time.

All virtual requests require Guidance approval
