The whore work of the composrtonof thc phlfosophlcal Stone andGrand Eflx lr , and of theFlret Solui lon of theGrosse Bodles:

Take our Artif icial Antirnony, but not the Natural Antimony asit comes out of the Earth, for that is too d.ry for our work, andhath l i t t le or no hunidi ty, or fatness in i t , but take I saf, ourArtif icial Antimonial compound, whieh is abund.antly replinishedwith the Dew of Heaven and the fatness and unctuosity of the earth,.wherein precious 0i1s and rich Mercuries are by Nature closelysealed up, and hidden from the eyes of all inorant deriders ofthe great and wonderful mysteries of Almighty God, to the endthat seeing they should not see, nor understand, what he hath in_closed in the most obviousr coDmoh, and contemptible beginningsof all Things in the whole World. This our Antimonial Compound s only to be revealed to the Child-ren of Art, who firmJ.y believe the constant truth thereof , andwhom n all fraternal love and charity we sayr that it is made ofone Sulphur, srrd of two Mercurj.es, which otherwise by the wisePhilosophers are ealled, the Sun, Moon, and Mercury, or as someof them will more plainly have lt, Sa1t, Sulphur, and MercurV,whieh are the three several and dist inct substances and bodies,

al though for the most part we term them but one Thing, beeausein the conelusion of our work they make but one Thing, that isour admirable El ixi r , and they have al l one orig inal , and tendal together but to one end. For i f we had not in our Work a tr iuneaspect of these Pl-anets, and did not begin i t wi th a Tr in i ty, a1l-would be lost labour and inut i lous prof i le.

Wherefore i f thou wi l t thr ive in our Art , w wish thee to beginwith our Mineral Tr in i ty, whereof th is our Art i f ic ia l Ant imonialcompound s made. Take then first in the prime beginning of thyWork, these three noble Kinsmen, who are immediately indued withalL the strong and subt i le qual i t ies of the four Elements, and intheir due and most natural proport i -ons, ( in which proport ionssee thou do not erre, for i f thou do, thou shal t never reduce thcsbodies into our true Chaos, and so thou wi l t be constrained tobegin again, which wi l l be a most ted. ious discouragement unto theePut them into a good and strong cucurbi t , or glass body' and closei t wel l on the Top, that none of the spir i ts exhale, for i f theyf ind a Vent to evaporate, thou art undone, because thereby thouloosest and wasteth the f lowers of our Gold. When thy Vessel iswel l - closed, put i t into the Phi l -osophers Oven, and set i t inAshes or sand, wi th a temperate f i re under i t , for the space of aPhi losophers Month, which is six whole weeks, and in that t imeour grosse bodies wi l l be dissolved and mort i f ied and made f i t tobegin a more royal generat ion.

In this t ime of dissolut ion and putrefact ion our three nobleKinsmen, most unnatural ly become the immanehomicides of eachother, for they spare not wi th al l cruel ty to extract each othersvi ta l b lood, and are stewed in their own proper gores, and becomesoft and tender, l ike unto butter, and are made al l one thingwithout any di f ference, or dist inct ion. When hou hast broughtthy work to this pass, thank God, and be glad that through hisGrace and mercy thou hast obtained our Chaos dark and mist ie,which is the true one Thing wri t ten of by al l the Phi losophers,

our confused mass and the prime ground of al-l- our Secrets, fortherein l ieth invisib le couched, our Gold and Si lver, our Sulphurand Mercur ies, our Christal l ine Water, our 0i1s and Tinctures, andour four Elements which thou must make visible and apparant toal- l seeing eyes, e lse can nothing be ef feeted, nei ther shal t thouever obtain thy wished for si lvery and golden desire.

These Mercur i -es Waters, 0i1s, Tinctures, and El-ements, makevisib l -e then and conspicuous thus. After the aforesaid monthsend, thy vessel being cold, open the mouth thereof, and set on thetop thereof a head of glass wel l fastened thereunto, and placei t in our Bath, and cl-ose well a reeeiver to the mouth of the hel-ment, and draw out al l the insipid and faint water, which takeaway and reserve i t close by i tsel f , then f ix your receiver onagain, and with a stronger f i re in ashes, and draw out al1 theWhite fume, whi-ch is cal led our Air , si lver ie Tincture and VirginsMi lk, which also remove and keep i t l - ikewise most close stoppedby i tsel f . Then last of al l put to another receiver, and in sandwith the strongest f i re thou eanst make, separate the red fume, which is cal- led our natural f i re, our golden Ti-ncture, and radical

.humidi ty of our Elemental bodies, and cont inue thy f i re so longunt i l i t leave bleeding, then asswage the f i re by degrees, andsuddenly close it wel l wi th wax' that the spir i ts vanish not awayfor th is is caI led our blessed l iquor, and trust me there is nota stronger poison in al- l the World than i t , therefore keep i t closand meddle not wi th i t t i l t hereafter. Thus now the work of Art , for Division and Separat ion, is the solework of Art and of the Art ist , and not of Nature; for here Natureis forced by the Ski l l of the Workman, to forgo and part wi th herbeloved Elements, which she so straight ly kept chained and inclosein her bosome, and which by violence by external f i re ' are evenas i t were forcib ly rent and torn from her.

Indeed, the f i rst Work of Solut ion and Mort i f icat ion is theSole operat ion of Nature, for the Mater ia ls being inclosed in thei

dungeon there Nature attenuates them, there she dissolves andputref ies them, and causeth them to run a retrograde course intotheir own f i rst matter again, that is, into a sl- imie and viscousmass and substance, whereof at f i rst out of the four Elementsthey were formed and begotten. And in that f i rst work, the Art istis but only a fire maker, which only giveth Nature strength andpower to work in and upon the mater ia ls, for wi thout an exci t ingf i re Nature were not able to effect anything, but she would who11remain idle and void of course, and that in regard of the extremecoldness of the Mercury, for where cold predominates, heat mustneeds l ie fet tered and immoveabLe,but when the external f i re st i r -reth up and provoketh the f ierce indignat ion of the Sal t Menstrue, she present ly seizeth upon the fat unctuous body of the Sulphur, and extracts his natural heat and f iery element, and then bothof them together do so ardent ly incircle and work upon the coldMercury, that they dissever and scatter a l l h is members nto smal latomes than f1y in the beams of the Sun, and then heat beginnethto get the supereminence.

Therefore in this FIRST WORKhe Operator is but the Trust ieadministrator of Nature, which in this case, the most i l leterate

.and simple man in the World may be.But in the Secret Work of the conjunct ion of our Elements, both

Nature and Art , hand in hand accompaning each other, for therethe Art ist f indeth and imbibeth, and Nature f ixeth and congealeth, which we wi l l show hereafter, when we handle that work.

fhe FIRST WORK F SOLUTION educeth our Tri-nity and AntimonialCompound nto a green Errn, called the Green Lyon, which gum drymoderately we1l , but beware thou burn not h is f lowers, nor destroygreenness, for therein l ieth his Soul , which is our mai-n Secret. And our SECOND ORK ani fests those th ings which were beforehid f rom sight, namely, i t makes our four Elements to appear vis-ib1y, and to be had general ly and dist inct ly. But in th is SecondWork i f thou extract our Air and our Fire wi th the phlegm water,

I t is most certain, that the external f i re is a great fr iendto us, and his nature is such, that he can indure no impuri ty inanything, therefore at the day of Judgement, the Elemental f i resha1l pur i f ie, cleanse, and burn up al l the impure earth that wetread or l , and purge i t f rom al l dross and f i1th.

So l ikewise must i t do in our work. Wherefore af ter the separ-at ion of our Water, Air and Fire out of our Earth; Take out theblack feces which remain in the bottom of our Vessel- , cal l -ed ourDragon, and grind i t into smal l powder, and calcine i t in twocrucibles luted together, in a potters furnace, or in a g1ass, orwind furnace, unt i l i t look whi t ish or something grey, which Calxkeep by i tsel f , for i t is cal led the Base and Foundat ion of ourWork, and it is now cal led MARS,and our White Fixed Earth. The Puri f icat ion of our Faint Waters.

A11 things being now purified without and within, now beginneththe Work of Art and Nature, wherein, the one must inseparably aidthe other, for i f e i ther refuses to help each other, al l the formesweats and Toi les are to no purpose, for Nature can not br ingour disserved elements together wi thout the assistance of theexpert Art ist ; nei ther can the Art ist coagulate the eLements puttogether wi thout Nature, wherefore Nature implores the aid of theArt ist wi th an Adjuna me, & ego adjunabose. And the Art ist f indingbefore, what good Nature had done him, in dissolving and putrefy-ing the bodi-es, is as ready to help her, thus.
