Call Number: Combination of numbers and letters on spine used for organizing books.

Read Call Numbers Left to Right, Top to Bottom

Decoding Call Numbers

There are usually two or three rows:1st & 2nd row: Section

REF, FIC, SC, or Numbers

Finding Books by Call Numbers: Non-Fiction

Non-fiction uses Dewey Decimal System

Number Order811 comes before 812822.02 comes before 822.10

Then Alphabetically Author’s last name Subject of book811 ANG before 811 ELI

Finding Books by Call Numbers: Fiction

Fiction: FIC or SC or PB

Alphabetically by first 3 letters of author’s last name
