Li Wei Law receives funding from
Sport Excel
From the Athletic Director
This weekend is a big one in the sporting year as our U19 Boys and Girls Football teams
endeavour to be successful at the annual SEASAC Football Tournament. The U19 Girls left
for Singapore via the Odyssey Coach on Thursday and the boys made the short journey
to Alice Smith School today. The girls are in Division 1 and will be competing against the
best teams in South East Asia. We wish them all the best of luck.
We also wish the best of luck to the U11 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams this weekend as
they battle it out at the U11 ISAC Tournament, which is hosted at ISKL for the boys and
KLASS for the Girls. Garden International School currently hold the U11 Girls trophy from
2015. A repeat win would see the Girls defend their title.

Future bright for Swim Star Li Wei
Following hot on the heels of Revan and Anjali, this week we have received further boosts to our swim community. Year 7 pupil Li Wei Law had a breakthrough year in 2016, with multiple national medals including her first GOLD in the 50m Breaststroke. This week, she was announced on a shortlist of 6 swimmers in Malaysia to receive funding from Sport Excel. The funding is given to students who show great potential in their particular sport and show the utmost commitment to achieving long term success for the country. This funding will be used to cover costs of travel, racing suits and training equipment as a whole. Congratulations Li Wei and we look forward to seeing you progress as a GIS Dragon!

Why Yoga is great for children in sport.
GIS Swimming programme uses Yoga to excel
The benefits are:
1. Improved Strength: Routine and consistent practice of the various yoga poses helps build strength and improve lean muscle mass. These gains have enhanced core body stability and significantly reduced overuse injury by strengthening the supportive but otherwise under-developed muscles surrounding the more utilized muscles, improving overall strength.
2. Balance: Consistent yoga practice, has been found to increase coordination and balance. Why is this important? Better balance and coordination means enhanced control over how you move your body, which in turn leads to better technique and form -- the brass ring every athlete spends a career refining, whether your focus is a swim stroke, golf swing, running stride, jump shot or wrestling move.
3. Flexibility: Yoga invariably improves joint and muscular flexibility, which is crucial to the body’s overall structural soundness. For example, a swimmer with supple shoulder and hip joints is able to capture and pull more water than a swimmer with a more limited range of motion. The result is more forward movement per stroke as well as enhanced muscular strength and increased range of motion.

U15 Boys Football secure victory in final minutes
V ISKL Won 3-2 ( Jun, Ali x2)
MoM: Yan Yu / Viktor
The U15 boys football team travelled to ISKL for a tough friendly fixture. GIS got off to a
great start after Jun Ida was fouled in the 7th minute. Jun confidently stepped up and
smashed the ball from 20 yards into the back of the net. GIS struggled to capitalise on the
early goal and the ISKL substitutes influenced 2 goals in 20 minutes. With 5 minutes
remaining Ali received the ball on the left and cut inside the defender, guiding the ball
past the stranded goalkeeper to equalise. In the 39th minute, Jiang Rong provided a cross
from the right and Ali cleverly got ahead of the defender and side footed the ball into the
empty net to secure a fantastic final minute winner.
Rugby and Swimming Programmes working early
7
The rugby programme has been growing from strength to strength with record numbers
attending training. Coach Slimming, Solomons and Barnwell have welcomed the new KL
Tigers Rugby Development Officer (Coach Lewis) onto the coaching team and he has
worked across all the age groups.
8
Swimming is typically associated with lonely early morning sessions working on miles of
technique and kick boards. The GIS swim programme continue to offer opportunities to
excel for all swimmers.

U13A and U13B Netball v Alice Smith School.
More fantastic wins for both the U13 A and B Netball teams against Alice Smith. The teams played their first hour-long matches of the year and their fitness and defending was exemplary. A special mention to our MVP’s Ellie, Runrun, Sky and Alannah for having such a big impact on their games. Well done to everyone who played for two sets of great results.
