Now All Case Searches Uncover More!LexisNexis® Related Content ExpandsNow all state and federal case-law searches at lexis.com® reach deeper and compile vital insights to help you and your legal researchers better understand the true impact of a case .

New LexisNexis Related Content has expanded its analysis coverage to include all 50 states back to beginning of reporting as well as complete federal coverage. That means every state case search will return a virtual roadmap of editorial content available at lexis.com—without additional searching! And all of this valuable analysis is conveniently organized into one navigation pane adjacent to your full-text case .

For federal cases, that includes official report PDFs and court documents, such as LexisNexis Briefs, Pleadings & Motions; Lexis® Case in Brief for newer and significant cases—with links to news coverage and dockets; and Emerging Issues Analysis—from Matthew Bender®, Mealey’s™ and Martindale-Hubbell® authors .

For state case-law searches as well as federal case-law research, you’ll also find your issue covered in an exclusive combination of analytical resources—a combination you can’t replicate in one search anywhere else:

• MatthewBender treatises plus U .S . and state practice guides; • More BNA® legal analysis than available elsewhere; • ALR®, Am Jur® and state jurisprudences such as Witkin;• Law reviews and more .

And use the Related Content Document Outline to navigate state cases conveniently—just as you can with federal cases .

Search Strategy

Kick It Up a Notch! Some Familiar lexis .com Tools Take New Related Content Research Deeper Not only does LexisNexis Related Content uncover additional, relevant resources for your case-law research, it allows you to use standard LexisNexis refining features to change your research direction and navigate your results . For example:

NavigateLengthyCasesAs simple as it sounds, just keeping your place in a lengthy case can be difficult . With LexisNexis Related Content, you’ve got a document outline—with links— at your disposal throughout your online research .

The Document Outline is located at the bottom of your Related Content viewing pane . Click and move to any case section—or directly to the top of the document . By the way, the Document Outline is a good first glance at the case, because each outline is specific to the case, i .e ., if a Concur By link is shown, then there is a concurring opinion .

UsetheFOCUS™FeaturetoRefine—orChange—YourLexisNexisRelatedContentAnalysisResultsYou can use the FOCUS feature several ways to enhance your results—without executing a new search .

GETADOCUMENTFirst, consider using the FOCUS feature when you retrieve a case at the GET A DOCUMENT tab . For example, you enter a citation, e .g ., ENTER: 800 f2d 111

When you retrieve a case by citation, it includes the LexisNexis Related Content viewing pane with suggestions in the Issue Analysis box . See the example at right .

Page 3: LexisNexis The newsletter specifically designed for legal ... · Web 2 .0 Technology Brings You Closer to the Product Pipeline at LexisNexis LexisNexis operates in a Web 2 .0 world,

09:083

l a w . l e x i s n e x i s . c o m / i n f o p r o

But perhaps you’re interested in the case for more specific reasons . You can enter FOCUS feature terms, such as ENTER: prima facie case, and the suggestions in the Issue Analysis box change to reflect your FOCUS terms . When you add words to refine your thoughts, you also provide additional information for Issue Analysis to evaluate . Now look . Compare the screen to the right with the previous screen:

RefineYourSearchResultsSecond, if you enter a search and the results lead you to new thoughts—and a new research direction—you can enter FOCUS terms to change the suggestions in the Issue Analysis box . For example, look at the case to the right, retrieved with this search request:

SOURCE: U .S . Supreme Court Cases, Lawyers’ Edition

SEARCH: superfund AND CERCLA OR comprehensive environmental response OR 42 /5 9601

Retrieve a full-text casethen refine

the analysis results

Now use the FOCUS feature to change the suggestions in the Issue Analysis box to reflect your research interest in potentially responsible parties . In the FOCUS terms box, ENTER: potentially responsible parties . Now look at your Issue Analysis suggestions . (You can exit your FOCUS search at any time and go back to your original search—and to your original analysis suggestions . Just click the ExitFOCUS link at the top of your screen .)

Gain Access to LexisNexis RelatedContent—EveninLexisNexis® Tax AdvisorLexisNexis Tax Advisor—Federal Code and LexisNexis Tax Advisor—Federal Topical, both available through the LexisNexis Tax Center, also offer a left navigation pane of their own . But, for example, when you link from a code section to analysis that cites a case important for your research, you can link to that case—right to the analysis you need . Your Tax Advisor viewing pane stays in place, but you can move forward again—to look at analysis for the case-law issues—by moving to the LexisNexis Related Contents pane . Just click the RelatedContent tab at the bottom of the screen . Move back to the Tax Advisor pane the same way; click the LexisNexis Tax Advisor tab at the bottom of the screen .

Gayle Lynn-Nelson

Do You Network Professionally With Your Attorneys? You Can Through Martindale-Hubbell® Connected by Gayle Lynn-Nelson, LexisNexis Senior Librarian Relations ConsultantIn this “information overloaded world” we all work and live in, sometimes it is nice to know what tools are out there for professional communication . Recently LexisNexis launched Martindale-Hubbell® Connected for Librarians among other legal professionals . Attorneys were the first to “get connected .”

So, why do I think this is so great? As a legal professional, knowing I am part of a greater community with the same professional interests means something to me . Networking can assist me in meeting business needs and help streamline access to information .

Another really useful feature of Martindale-Hubbell Connected is its ability to track forums and discussions about practice areas, so I learn what other lawyers and librarians are saying about topics that don’t always make it into cocktail conversations but are important to our work . I also find some fodder for those elevator speeches we always say we need to have ready . And Martindale-Hubbell Connected also has an area for job listings, obviously an important tool in these economic times .

Yes, I am on LinkedIn® and even Facebook . And while Facebook is a nice social networking tool, LinkedIn is a good professional/social networking tool, it is nice to know I am now on something just for legal professionals .

So why is Martindale-Hubbell Connected different from a librarian listserv or other librarian networking/infosharing options? It gives you the opportunity to be on something your attorneys are on and to be seen in the same light on a professional networking site. Our attorneys do not look at our librarian tools, but they do go to Martindale-Hubbell Connected . When they see your name in connection with theirs, it helps raise you to another level .The new Martindale-Hubbell Connected site also includes:• “SmartConnections.” Network connections are identified in search results

so members not only see with whom, but specifically how or why they are connected. Network technology proactively suggests contacts from among 45 million potential connections by matching one’s career and educational background with the full set of lawyers from the martindale.com® service . Additionally, the network mines court documents to identify useful connections between a member and other lawyers he or she has teamed with or faced in court .

• ExclusiveCombinationofLexisNexisServicesContent. The network offers members access to an exclusive combination of authoritative information from the LexisNexis services and other sources, including data, statistics, research, news, competitor profiles, marketing trends, ratings, polls and client reviews .

• User-GeneratedContentandInteractiveCapabilities.The network also delivers access to quality user-generated content such as blogs, podcasts, more than 27,000 pieces of counsel-created research, online events and other content contributed by peers .

• IntegratedAccessto37MillionLinkedInUsers.Complementing the Martindale-Hubbell Connected legal network, an agreement with LinkedIn offers Martindale-Hubbell Connected users instant visibility between lawyers they are searching and integrated access to their personal LinkedIn profiles . This means Martindale-Hubbell Connected members can quickly and easily find non-lawyer connections or referrals in the broader LinkedIn business network .

Web 2 .0 Technology Brings You Closer to the Product Pipeline at LexisNexisLexisNexis operates in a Web 2 .0 world, and Martindale Hubbell Connected is just one example .

Since our success as a company depends on creating information solutions that help you work more productively and derive long-term value, “Customer Focus” is a key corporate value at LexisNexis—and we continue to use Web 2 .0 technology to understand, anticipate and respond to your needs .

For example: • We seek input from valued

customers via newly created Innovation teams—and via a new Web site called myIdeas . For more information on myIdeas, see last month’s issue of Update or go to www .myideas .com .

• NewLexisNexisCustomerDiscovery&Innovation(CDI)teams have been formed specifically to identify and refine customer-centric concepts and deliver innovation in a way that provides value for customers . There is a team for librarians, and the goal is to seek in-depth feedback from information professionals on LexisNexis products . These teams are by invitation and complement the myIdeas site in a very focused and directed manner .

• LexisNexisalsoworkswithcustomers to determine their challenges and aspirations and to build product and service roadmaps to meet them . Examples include the Librarian Innovation Teams that meet every month; the YouLabs held at the 2009 AALL Annual Meeting for 60 librarians; and the monthly YouLabWebinars that started this fall . If you are interested in attending the monthly You Lab Webinar, contact Jo Haraf at [email protected]
