1: Central Conflict

A Fresh Cup of Orangeade Remembered by Granny

Through an Endless Phone Call

You know what I always say these days, I'm getting too old for this! Sure, I used to be

the best matcher in town, could match up a pretty bride and handsome husband,

could match up two muddy old socks if you asked me to! I was the only shadchan for

miles, no one else was as good at match making as I was. You remember the day when

I chose you to be my match, my match for a perfect best friend. Oh, that was years

ago, though I still remember it clear as day. You were smackin your brand new tootsie

pop as you walked down the street, braggin about how you got the last one in the

candy shop. Then I came right up to you and popped you on the sides of your ears told

you how senseless it was to say that, there was another candy shop just down the

street with a new delivery of lolli's for everyone! You came over for my ma's fresh

orangeade and that's where we hit it off. Haven't been separated since, have we?

Anyway, my grandson got his nickers in a twist and for some odd reason refuses to

have any friends except for his pet parakeet Chatty. I told him to move on, forget

about the bird and find some real friends, but he won't listen, just sits there with his

bird all alone. Now don't get me started on the little girl who lives next door. Got

fondness for animals just like my sonny, except she goes out in the woods and plays

with birds, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and skunks, which by the way, the stink does not

come out in just one shower. She prefers many animals to just a lonely chatty

parakeet. Though animal friends or not, both don't have any real friends, no one to

rely on, no one to play with, and both children have absolutely no one to share a fresh

cup of orangeade with!
