POLICE are investigating an armed robbery outside Sankopano Centre.

Two suspects wantedSIYATHEMBA [email protected]

Two men are wanted by Alex police in connection with an armed robbery.

The robbery took place outside the Sankopano Centre on 10 January. It is alleged that the victims had just collected money from clients of the funeral scheme at Sankopano when the

incident took place. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses

Maphakela said, “As the victims were walking out of Sankopano two guys appeared and one pointed a gun at them and asked for money.”

The suspects took R7 800, two cellphones, an iPad and car keys, and fled.

No arrests have been made and police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

Cops hunting hijackersSIYATHEMBA BEN [email protected]

Alexandra police are looking for four suspects in connection with a hijacking which allegedly took place on January 12 at Far East Bank at 5:45am.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela explained that the driver of the car, a silver Toyota Avanza, was transporting four passengers in his vehicle when the

incident occurred. "They wanted to be dropped off and when

they got out of the car two of them pointed firearms at the driver. They took his phones and drove off," Maphakela said. He said one of the suspects had bloodstains on his shirt.

"The car is valued at around R240 000," said Maphakela.

No one has been arrested and the car has not been found. Police are investigating a case of car hijacking.

BUSISIWE Zulu, who’s been bedridden for almost 20 years, says she wants to be normal again.

SIYATHEMBA BEN [email protected]

Busisiwe Zulu's hope to walk again is slowly fading. The 54-year-old woman, who has been bedridden for almost 20 years with suspected elephantiasis, was promised an operation that could help her condition but that promise has not been fulfilled.

A weeping Zulu said, "I'm asking myself what is wrong and why are they so quiet. I don't know why they haven't contacted me to tell me what is causing the delay."

The procedure would have been paid for by an overseas company and would have required Zulu to be in Cape Town for four months. But Zulu said she has given up hope and doesn't know what to do.

"Nothing is going right. This hurts me a lot. I can't find peace and I'm tired of living like this. I don't like the life that I'm living. I was actually happy that I was going to get a chance to live like other people but I don't see that happening," she explained.

She said her condition has made her a joke in the community and it has also put her family under a lot of strain.

She said, "I feel stuck. I can't do much for myself. It's really hard. I can't even bath myself and I need help to get into bed. One of my grandkids has even failed at school because she can't concentrate and has to help around the house."

Zulu added that receiving the help she needs would make her happy. "I will become normal again," she said.

Halt to dangerous gameKHANYISILE [email protected]

Safety measures will be considered to stop children from playing on a sewerage pipe that crosses the Jukskei River in the Westbank area of Alexandra.

After the issue was raised in the article, Dicing with Death, week ending 20 December, councillor

Joyce Ngwenya agreed to look into the matter. The councillor said she was previously unaware

that children were endangering their lives by playing on the pipe. Residents were concerned that the children could slip and fall onto the rocks below.

“I will however report the matter to the patrollers and inform them to just patrol the area and keep them [children] out,” she said.

‘I won’t stop’SIPHO [email protected]

Although Alex resident Thandi Nhlapo is well aware of the pitfalls of running a shebeen, she has vowed never to quit the business because the money is good.

Nhlapo runs the Kaaltopie Shebeen in the heart of old Alex, which is a hive of activity with customers flooding in for bottled beer and the traditional variants of home brew, better known in township lingo as imbamba or isqatha.

Kaaltopie was a nickname given to her mother from whom she inherited the shebeen. Patrons gave her the nickname which is Afrikaans 'tsotsitaal' for a bald head.

She cited constant harassment by the police as one of the pitfalls. And says what makes matters worse is that police officers soon recognise a gold mine and demand bribes in return for her confiscated stock.

“Each time the cops are broke, they run to raid my shebeen knowing very well they will get ‘cool drink’ money. I have become a money-spinning machine for them,” she said.

Kaaltopie – she has also inherited her mother's nickname – said the police had developed a tendency to raid her spotong at times when it was full of customers so they would make even more money through bribes. She claims they also demand bribes from her customers for patronising an illegal beer outlet.

Despite this, Kaaltopie said she would never shy away from the business. “They may raid me, take my stock and harass my patrons but I will never bolt away from running the shebeen,”she said.

“The money I make here is good and tax-free money. I do not want to register because

WARD 105 councillor Joyce Ngwenya promises to ensure that children do not endanger their lives by playing on a sewerage pipe.

Celebration for a legendSIPHO [email protected]

Alexandra's oldest living person, Johannes Mdelwa Nkosi, will celebrate his 104th birthday at a lavish ceremony at the Thusong Youth Centre on 22 January.

Born in Emangwaneni, Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal on 22 January, 1910 Nkosi first came to Johannesburg in 1931 and lived in Orlando East before moving to Bloemfontein in 1957.

A year later, Nkosi moved to Alexandra and lived at Pan which now houses Alexandra's top shopping mall.

In 1960, he shared a yard with the late, great Nelson Mandela when the ANC leader first came to Johannesburg after absconding from Eastern Cape. A few years later, Nkosi moved to his present-day address on the corner of 11th Avenue and Josias Madzunya Street.

Asked about his recipe for longevity, Nkosi answered that abstaining from fatty foods and

western beer did the trick. The only beer he drinks is the traditional brew of umqombothi, he eats a lot of vegetables and is fond of black rooibos tea.

Nkosi currently lives with his 65-year-old retired son-in-law, Thabiso Ishmael Mokoena. Mokoena is married to Nkosi and his wife's only child, Tholakele Martha Mokoena. His late wife, Nomahashi Johanna Nkosi (nee Mkhwanazi) was born in Vryheid on 22 January, 1899.

Nomahashi, who shared the same day and month birthday as her husband, died in 2008 aged 107.

Interestingly, Tholakele was born on 18 July, 1957 and shares her birthday with Mandela, who died on 5 December last year.

Thusong Youth Centre founder Beauty More, who has always supported Nkosi with food parcels and birthday presents over many years, in association with Alex FM, will throw a lavish party for Alexandra's living legend on 22 January at the centre.

I will have to share my money with the taxman, and be subjected to various rules and regulations of when to sell and when not to sell and to whom.”

Kaaltopie has vowed to die a shebeen queen. “I used to be a domestic worker in Sandton but the money I make here a day by far surpasses that salary. From profits of the shebeen, I send my children to school. I have managed to educate my daughter from this business and today she is a top paramedic from the shebeen money. I have a decent house with good furniture etc. What more do I want in life?” she asked.

THANDI Nhlapo says she does not want to close her shebeen because it generates an income for her family.

Dumping is a Pikitup problemMary Hazelton writes:I would like to comment on the rubble being dumped at the corner of Sneddon and 11th Ave Sydenham.

The basic cause of the dumping reported near Rembrandt Park, Edenvale Hospital and surrounding areas is the lack of a Pikitup site that takes builder's rubble or large items in the north or north east of Johannesburg. All the builder's rubble sites are far away in the south.

While a building contractor can presumably afford to hire a skip and transport the rubble this distance, do-it-yourself residents

are greatly disadvantaged. The bakkie in the photo is

probably one of the bakkies for hire that park on Louis Botha Avenue in Orchards.

I have made use of one of those bakkies from time to time and have heard about the problem.

They need to charge a lot to cover the cost of driving to the 'right' site. And they are parked within a stone's throw of the Short Street/Pine Street dump.

No wonder people dump anywhere. And we are supposed to be saving petrol.

Surely there could be a site in the north east for this purpose.

Neighbourhood needs to clean upA Joburg resident writes: This morning I happened to be driving along the road in the opposite direction to the garbage truck in the process of collecting bins – not an enviable job by any means – and the workers could be seen rushing to accomplish their unpleasant task with vigour.

However at each bin that had been emptied, numerous bits of garbage that had spilled out was left behind on the street or pavement – probably never to be

picked up ever again. As only garbage in the

designated bins is collected, other bags, piles or pieces of rubbish, including the garbage spilling out of municipal bins, is left where it is forever more.

If only the garbage collectors would collect that, as well as anything that has fallen out during collection of the bins, our litter problems would be substantially taken care of.

The December holidays are over, and Joburg residents are, once again, sitting in traffic.

Oh, the joys of being a Joburger! One often hears Durbanites or Capetonians saying, "I could never live in Joburg, the traffic is awful!" Well, non-Gautengers, yes it is – but I can honestly say the better qualities of our wonderful city make up for the shocking traffic.

Although gridlock is something many residents can get used to – when you are paying for it, it's another story. All over the city, one constantly hears residents bickering about our now infamous e-tolls.

Surely Sanral and local government should keep the highways in top condition – now that we are paying far more than a pretty penny to drive on these roads, and considering the costs involved, they should be tarred with gold.

Traffic lights at on-ramps are still constantly out and although the extra lane helps, the highways are still an absolute mess every morning.

Residents, ward counsellors and this newspaper need to start putting pressure on Sanral and local government because the saying "you pay for what you get" clearly is not true in this case.

The forgotten town of AlexZini Ndlovu writes:I have been an Alex resident for a while and have not seen any improvement or development. Where is the freedom and ‘better life’ that we were promised 20 years ago?

As if the terrible living conditions and congestion are not enough, we have huge potholes and the traffic lights are never working.

I use Alfred Nzo Street, a very big and busy street, every single day and getting around there is a nightmare. The street is full of big potholes that could damage cars and possibly cause accidents. And then the traffic lights don’t work most of the time which begs the question: what are our councillors doing? Don’t they use these roads or are they blind?

This is a busy road and I’m

worried that if nothing is done to improve the condition something bad will happen. Why are services not being delivered to the people of Alex? Must we take to the streets and start burning tyres before something happens? It is really frustrating to know that our complaints are falling on deaf ears and I’m pleading with those in power to start taking us seriously.

We are going to elections soon and have already seen politicians going in and out making empty promises. People are tired of being fed lies and they want their lives to be improved. We can’t keep living like this and be expected to vote. Can someone please do something to change our living conditions.

We deserve better.

CARTER Primary School pupils Nkosinathi Madondo, Sibusiso Moloi, Simphiwe Moloi and Scebi Moloi.

Smooth startSIYATHEMBA BEN [email protected]

There were smiles, tears and laughter as Grade 1 pupils made their way to school on Wednesday.

This was a big day for the little ones who stepped into "big school" for the first time. Some were accompanied by their parents while others walked in pairs to get to school.

A cheerful Ayanda Mabaso (5) could not hide his excitement. "It is good to be here. I'm a big girl now and I am happy to be here. When I grow up I want to be a teacher," the Grade 1 pupil said.

Seated next to her was six-year-old Mbali Khumalo who said she was not scared to be in "big school". "I have already made friends and I can't wait to play with them," she

said. While some had already made

friends, others were still trying to find their way around the school. A quiet Nkosinathi Madondo, who was wandering around the school alone, said he was looking forward to making new friends. "I'm happy," the six-year-old said.

According to school principal, Siva Naicker things were running smoothly.

"Everyone has settled in and we are ready to start. Pupils have received their timetables and stationery – teaching and learning begins today," Naicker said.

As expected, there were late applicants at the school. "We are not taking any late admissions and have referred them to the department of education," he explained.

THE first day of school started with no glitches at Carter Primary School.

Cash for goalsSIPHO [email protected]

What would the Nedbank Cup be without its charity angle? Probably nothing.

These were the words of Sydney Mbhele, a divisional executive for marketing at Nedbank when he announced the continuation of the Goals4Goals campaign, which is a charity drive in partnership with the Sports Trust.

"This element of the Nedbank Cup will continue to be a key feature of the tournament as it encourages footballers to score more goals and also to contribute to sports development in the country," he said.

"With 97 goals netted in the 2013 competition, this translated into R776 000 which contributed towards the building of a R1 million multi-purpose sports court for Sinamuva Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal. A further R1-million was used in 2013 to provide soccer kits and training to over 120 schools across the country."

In the 2012 Nedbank Cup campaign,

Alexandra's MC Weiler Primary School was the beneficiary of a brand new soccer pitch, soccer kits and other requirements for playing the beautiful game.

In the cup draw, the giants of South African football, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns avoided playing each other in the last 32. Chiefs were drawn for a clash against National First Division side Black Leopards, Pirates will play Thanda Royal Zulu, Sundowns will take on Ajax Cape Town, Swallows drew minnows Mbombela United and SuperSport will be involved in a Tshwane derby with University of Pretoria.

The R20.3-million total prize money makes it the most lucrative cup competition in Africa, with the winner pocketing a cool R7 million.

The competition comprises 16 teams from the Premier League, eight from the National First Division and eight from the South African Football Association league.

ORLANDO Pirates coach Roger De Sa and his Kaizer Chiefs counterpart Stuart Baxter are football arch-rivals but friends off the pitch.

SUPERSPORTED United coach Cavin Johnson, Bloemfontein Celtic coach Ernst Middendorf and Platinum Stars coach Allan Freese (back to camera) chat just before the Nedbank Cup draw.

NEW SuperSport United signing Lebogang Manyama with his new coach Cavin Johnson.

SuperSport signs starSIPHO [email protected]

Former FC Alexandra wing superstar Lebogang Manyama is dazzling with his soccer skills in the Premier Soccer League and has become the envy of many players in the country's prestigious league.

Manyama, who started his football career with Sheffield Football Club in Alexandra before moving up the ranks to join former Bafana Bafana and Ajax Cape Town ace midfielder Alfred Maimane Phiri's FC Alexandra outfit, was quickly snapped up by Ajax Cape Town after only two seasons with FC.

Now, his creative and exciting brand of play has caught the eye of SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson, who has described him as a player destined for greater heights. "I have signed him and given the player a three-and-a-half year deal because I think he will be a fantastic addition to my squad," said Johnson. "We have got a lot of fixtures coming up and so we are going to need a good squad of quality players for that, and we

hope Lebo will blend it nicely with the rest of the players we have."

The 23-year-old has been signed for R600 000 and has joined United in time for the premiership visit to Orlando Pirates on 18 January.

Manyama played for Ajax for three years with the winger netting 15 goals in 71 starts for the Urban Warriors which earned him a call-up to the national team.

The Alex-born player has attributed his decision to join Matsatsantsa because of the brand of football the team is associated with and the man steering the ship, Johnson. “The coach was a very big factor for me," he said. "He showed me from the beginning that he really wanted me. The team has some fantastic players in their ranks and I have admired their style of play for a while now. My main goal is to contribute positively to the success of the club.”

His agent Phiri said Manyama was a versatile player who could fit into any role upfront. "I got the boy from Balfour Alexandra Football Club where he did not have much game time and I turned him into the star he is today," said Phiri.

The Alex U13 soccer team clinched third spot in the VW U13 Junior Masters Tournament at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus from 9 to 12 January.

The team played six games of which they won three, drew two and lost

one. "We finished number three in the overall standings of the tournament," said team coach Mxolisi Mngomezulu, who is also the technical director of the Alexandra Northrand Football Association.

"The boys played exceptionally well and that is attributed to the support we got from the parents and our local football association in terms of

preparations," Mngomezulu added. He was assisted by Mahlomoleng Mohlaka, one of the youngest coaches in the Alex football fraternity. Mngomezulu described the tournament as "a great spectacle for the future development of our players and a true reflection of pure talent Alexandra has and the country at large, considering the teams

came from various parts of South Africa."

Mngomezulu paid tribute to VW Bruma which was their main sponsor and singled out sales manager Shane Naidu whom he said was selfless with his time and resources. "On behalf of the Alex football family we say 'Viva VW Bruma, viva'," Mngomezulu said.

The Alex team playing as VW Bruma played against VW Menlyn and won 4-0. The team then lost 1-0 to VW Middleburg, but won 1-0 against VW Strydompark.

The team went on to draw 1-1 with VW Durban and VW Centurion, before wrapping up with a 1-0 victory over VW Maritzburg.
