How To Keep A Meeting Request In Your Inbox Have you ever lost a “meeting request” you accepted in Outlook? You clicked the “Accept” button - and it was gone? Would you like to keep these meeting requests in your email or subfolder for future reference? Or just keep it in your Inbox until after the meeting actually takes place? Turn off “default settings” to save your meeting requests. When an appointment is accepted in Outlook, it automatically gets placed onto the calendar and automatical-ly deletes from you Email Inbox. If you want to keep a copy of the email, the default setting must be changed. Here’s how: 1. On the Tools menu 2. Click Options 3. Click E-mail Options 4. Click Advanced E-mail Options. 5. Clear the Check mark from the Delete meeting request from Inbox when responding.

Now, your meeting will appear on your calendar and stay in your inbox until you decide what action you would like to do next.

Simple Steps to Dispose of Your Notary Stamp

Have you retired? Chosen another line of work? Decided not to renew your commission? Whatever the reasons are, you are now in the possession of a notary stamp that is no longer necessary. To protect yourself from liability and to ensure your notary stamp doesn't fall into the wrong hands, you will need to render it useless. The simplest way to dispose of a rubber or self-inking notary stamp is to deface the engraved rubber that has your notary information. This part is usually located at the base of the notary stamp. Using a box cutter, pocket knife, or another sharp blade instrument scrape enough of the lettering from the engraved rubber so that the notary information is no longer discernable. Use a pair of vinyl or heavy work gloves to protect your hands from ink and injury. Other options would be to peel the rubber portion from the base of the notary stamp and use scissors to cut it into tiny pieces, or, after removing the rubber, rinse it in under water, place it in an envelope, and run it through a cross cut shredder. Notary stamps typically have an index card that contains an impression of the notary's seal. It is imperative that you remove and destroy this as well. If left intact, it could be taken, copied, and made into a new notary stamp with an intent to defraud. If you are unable to loosen the index card from the clear plastic casing, then it's hammer time! Use any blunt instrument you have access to in order to crack the casing and remove the index card. Once the engraved rubber part of the stamp is completely destroyed, and the index card is removed from the body of the stamping mechanism, the housing and remnants can be safely disposed of.

Notary metal embossing seals require a bit more ingenuity and finesse. The notary seal embosser typically consists of two parts. The embossing plates bearing the notary information is shaped like a V and is squeezed together in order to slip inside of the hand-gripping device when the embossing seal is assembled or disassembled. The only parts that need to be destroyed are the metal embossing plates bear-ing the notary's seal. If you have access to a welder or metal worker, they would have the proper equipment to disfigure the plates in order to eradicate the notary information. Another possibility would be the use of glue, such as an industrial strength or epoxy, to permanently glue the plates together. If you are unsure of what type of glue would be appropriate, you should consult your local craft or hardware store. If you aren't a do-it-yourself person or would prefer to have your notary stamp or seal disposed of professionally, there is one more option. As a courtesy, the American Association of Notaries offers a service to dispose of all types of notary stamps and seals in a secure and thorough manner. Please email [email protected] to receive information on how to tender a seal to our office for destruction. Always check your state notary law regarding disposal of notary stamps or seals. In North Carolina, for example, a notary whose commission ends without renewal is required to surrender his or her seal to the office of the Secretary of State. When an attorney is looking for a paralegal, there are a very specific set of attributes that he or she is looking for. Here is a brief overview of what makes a great paralegal in the eyes of most attorneys: 1. A hard worker – This one is probably obvious. A paralegal is going to be doing a lot of the legwork that that attorney simply does not have the time to do herself. That means long hours, late nights, and probably having to take on some tasks that the average person would probably avoid doing. The hard worker is the one who calls the job finished only when it actually is finished and when the attorney is happy with the work. 2. Trustworthiness – This is an attribute that every employer is looking for, but it probably even more important to a lawyer than it is to any other employ-er. An attorney is looking for someone that they can trust, not just to get the work done, but to get it done correctly. They are looking for someone who can be their right hand man, who can act in their stead when they simply do not have the time to take care of something themselves. That requires a huge amount of trust. 3. Autonomy – No attorney has the time to micromanage their paralegal. Most lawyers are not very good at managing people in the first place. They are detail-oriented and will probably try to micromanage their paralegals. The best paralegal is the one who can establish a relationship with that attorney so that the attorney understands that their paralegal does not need to be micromanaged. This means that he or she has a great deal of autonomy—she gets work done, even if no one is standing over his or her shoulder. 4. Prescience – This is probably not an entirely fair term to use. The lawyer will not expect you to read her mind, but he or she is probably looking for someone who is good at anticipating the needs of others. You are able to prioritize tasks so that they are done when the lawyer needs them done. You seek out work, rather than waiting for the lawyer to hand it to you. You can tell when the lawyer is starting to become overwhelmed and you know when to step in. In short, you think ahead. 5. Good with clients – The paralegal will probably be doing a fair bit of herding clients, talking to them,

and playing crowd control when the lawyer needs more time to focus on other tasks. As much as most lawyer like to talk, they simply do not have the kind of time that having an in depth discussion with every client, every time they come into the office would require. 6. Problem solving – Lawyers are looking for paralegals that are great at solving problems. Instead of complaining, they get to work, fishing for solutions, instead of furthering or, even worse, just ignoring the problem. 7. Willing to take on the difficult tasks – Just about any lawyer could tell you which tasks they have on their to-do list that they wish would just go away. If you are a person that is willing to take care of those tasks, you can become a definite asset to an attorney that is trying to unload an already heavy plate. 8. A sounding board – Sometimes, in order to organize their ideas or come up with solutions for their clients, a lawyer needs someone they can bounce ideas off of. This requires a degree of honesty—someone has to be willing to say whether or not those ideas are genuinely good, while also just knowing when to listen, without providing unsolicited feedback. 9. Direction follower – One of the best attributes for a paralegal to have is the ability to follow instructions to the letter, without having to be prodded or reminded about those instructions again. Most attorneys usually quickly weed out the applicants that cannot follow instructions, by immediately rejecting anyone who cannot properly follow the application instructions. That said, many attorneys are also looking for someone who is capable of making their own trail, without always needing to be told exactly what to do. 10. Writer – Writing is one of the most important skills that any paralegal can have. You are going to be doing a lot of writing, both when communicating with clients and when communicating with the attorney. While you do not have to be Henry David Thoreau in order to be attractive to lawyers, having this basic communication skill mastered makes you a much better candidate. The Texas Advanced Paralegal Seminar (TAPS) was held October 4 - 6, 2017 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Addison, Texas. SETAP members in attendance were Cheryl Bryan, Julie Hanna and Angie Laird. The CLE speaker presentations were excellent, as always. In addition, SETAP members were treated to a Thursday night social that consisted of a murder mystery dinner entitled, “Murder at the Masquerade”. A great time was had by all as they networked and reconnected with friends and colleagues. TAPS 2018 will be held in Addison, Texas again next year from September 26 - 28, 2018. Mark your calendars!

Paul Withington Gertz August 11, 1950 - October 21, 2017

Beaumont trial lawyer Paul Withington Gertz exhausted his final appeal on October 21, 2017; he was 67 years old. Paul was a beloved advocate, partner, husband, father, and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, leadership, sense of humor, and infectious laugh. Born in Longview, Texas August 11, 1950, to Harriett and Stanley Gertz, Paul graduated from Pine Tree High School. Paul graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1972 and completed law school at Southern Methodist University in 1975. Upon graduation, Paul moved to Beaumont, Texas to work with the prestigious Orgain, Bell, & Tucker Law Firm. As a young lawyer, Paul tried hundreds of cases ranging from property disputes and easements to personal injury and contract disputes. After only five years, he made partner at OBT. One federal judge wrote a kind letter to the managing partner of the firm in the wake of a week long trial describing Paul as a “young John Tucker.” In 1994, Paul left OBT and partnered with Larry Germer, to begin Germer & Gertz, L.L.P. Across the next decade, the firm grew from four lawyers to over one hundred – in Austin, Beaumont, and Houston. Ten years later, he “retired” to Colorado. But in classic Gertzian fashion, he couldn’t cease being an advocate and, instead, began a new firm in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 2013, Paul returned to Beaumont to practice law with his sons Ryan and Andy. He spent the past four years running the civil practice of the Gertz Law Firm. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Stanley Withington Gertz and Harriett Hill Gertz. He is survived by his loving wife Karen Bush Gertz and their daughter Dayle Duran, his sister Susan Gertz Harris, his chil-dren Ryan Withington and Stephanie Gertz, Vivek and Jeanie Gertz Mathew, Tony and Laura Gertz Her-nandez, Andrew Paul and Catherine Gertz, his 15 grandchildren: Amelia, Caroline, Max, Julianna, Noah, Andrew, Matthew, Kalyani, Sam, Hannah, Eleanor, Charlie, Leena, Dorothy, and Benjamin. Services were held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Beaumont on Friday, October 27, 2017. Memorial contributions to the Paul Withington Gertz Foundation may be sent to the Foundation at 2630 Liberty Beaumont, Texas 77702. The Foundation will provide funds for inpatient alcohol and drug recovery and needs-based scholarships to second year law students focused on trial advocacy.

An analysis of judicial rulings found that judges were more likely to issue harsher judgements right before lunch or well after lunch, and lighter judgements right after breakfast or lunch, strongly indicating that hunger and blood sugar levels played a role in their decision making.

Answer: A) With every other survey on the planet, 40,000 people around the U.S. took part in a consensus to determine that the most popular treat to give on Halloween is Candy Corn. Even though we mainly eat it around Halloween, Candy Corn was originally not a fall treat. It's original name was Chicken Feed & here in the U.S. we peck about 35 million pounds of it a year!

Tyler Technologies continues working with the pilot counties to work out changes needed to support access for clerks and their associated tools as well as the attorneys of record for a case. New features include the clerk's ability to secure documents either manually or automatically through their Case Management System (CMS), the ability to replace documents, and the ability to change the attorney of record on a case. Testing will continue with the pilot counties through the fall, with general availability for clerks around 1/1/2018. OCA and JCIT are continuing to collaborate on a roll-out plan for clerks and attorneys of record in order to fully implement the existing Supreme Court order to grant access to clerks and attorneys of record.
