Another year has come and gone and it seems just like yesterday we were getting ready for the 26th annual bull sale. The year has gone by quickly with lots of strides being made. We had a record setting bull sale last year with more bulls and our average was just as strong as ever. Justified came out as the high seller at $52,000. Thank you to Mark Land and Cattle, Borderline Contracting, Westman Farms, Bonchuks, McMillen Ranching, and Maxwells for your confidence in Justified. Also thank you to all of our customers for your trust in our program and for your friendship. We held our first female sale in eight years on December 1st and again, without your support it wouldn’t have been such a great success. Next year we will return to just selling a select group of females through out the fall in consignment sales. We had a great fall show run again and are proud to say we raised the Reserve Champion Simmental Bull at Agribition. LFE Limitless 369Y brought home this title and he’ll sell in the bull sale as Lot 69. Our customers also had great success with cattle bought or bred by us over the past year. The highlight was Meadow Acres, the Fornwald’s, purchase of LFE Dreamlady 79W from us at Checkers 2010 as one of the high sellers. She calved a month later and had a great red Stubby bull calf. They sold MAF Horizon at Checkers 2011 for $82,000. Nothing beats the success of our customers! The bulls in the 2012 offering have done everything we’ve expected them too. We had big weaning weights in the early fall and our so far mild winter has been great for the bull performance. We offer more bulls from every sector of our cow herd. We’ve increased numbers but have been as strict as ever on the bulls making the sale. The new herd bulls have out done themselves and the senior herd bulls are still giving the up and comers a huge bar to try to reach.As always we encourage you at anytime to stop by and see the bulls in the flesh or tour through the cow herd. From our family and crew, welcome to our 27th Bull Sale. It is an exciting time to be a part of the beef business. Hats off to the producers who have "stayed the course" in trying times and now are positioned to reap the well deserved rewards. We are thankful to our customers who are responsible for our success and progress.As always the cattle business continues to be one of the few professions where repeat business is the backbone and friendships become very valued long term relationships. Our breeding program is centered around moderate framed, easy fleshing, strong footed, good uddered, efficient cattle that can calve easy. The cows are run in a competitive environment, grazing for as long as possible on grass and swaths. When fed the cows T.M.R. is roughly 10% chaff straw and cereal silage. The bulls are fed a practical high roughage ration and are designed to work in a ranchers environment. We are embarking on our largest bull offering to date with over 100 extra age bulls and over 200 yearlings. Loaded with quality affordable bulls in every section in everybody's price range. Over the last number of years approximately half of the bulls have sold in the $2500 to $4000 dollar price range. Our breeding program offers tightly bred, cookie cutter, uniform bulls to service large groups of cows for consistency in your calf crop. We have adjusted volume discounts for 2012. The sale will be aired on DLMS (page 5 for details). Welcome to our 27th annual bull sale. This year has seen its ups and downs, no question. Having a large portion of western Canada under water didn’t really help anyone in the beef industry. Even with fantastic cattle prices, mother nature still holds the exit door open, forcing long time cattle people to sell everything.The future has never looked brighter for the Simmental breed and the cattle industry in general. With the low numbers of beef cattle in North America, the beef industry is going to be very exciting for many years to come, and profitable too. Hat’s off to all the cattle producers who have endured the hard times, knowing good times in this industry were around the corner. Obviously without the strong group of dedicated cow calf producers in western Canada we would not have the opportunity to be apart of this business. In saying that, the breeds of cattle on offer are what we feel are needed to propel the industry in a forward motion and to keep providing a confident source of genetics for our beef people.

Looking back on the foundation of Simmental cattle and where they’ve evolved to today; it’s really thrilling to predict where we as breeders can continue to learn and grow to keep raising the bar. With offering two distinct breeds and two different age sectors, I can say we have the variation to meet every cowman’s needs. The key to success has never been based around shear numbers, we’ve always focused on maintaining high quality. Being crucial at culling during breeding time allows us to avoid future problems that we or our customers might experience. NUTRITIONISTLewis Farms continuously provides professional nutrition and management programs for their cows, calves and bulls. Lewis bulls are grown on high roughage rations that promote rumen health, optimum growth and longevity. Cereal silage and bagged haylage comprise the bulk of the 2012 Lewis Bull Rations. The cereal silage is quite palatable and is an excellent source of energy while the haylage contributes significantly to the protein component of the rations. Chopped hay is incorporated in the bull ration to enhance the “scratch factor”. 100% of the bull’s requirements for trace minerals, and vitamins are provided in the custom formulated Lewis Farm’s bull supplement. Coarsely rolled, 16% moisture barley is the main energy source for the bulls. Additionally, water is added to the bull rations to minimize sorting. The total mixed ration fed to the bulls exceeds their nutrient requirements in all categories.

WARRANTY PROGRAMLewis Farms guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, a bull that has passed a semen test done by a licensed veterinarian.Should any Lewis bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, unable to physically service a cow or heifer, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the value of the bull in question or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. In short, we guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bullWe, however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of Third Party Livestock Insurance or Lewis Farms Breeding Season Warranty on your bulls. Our Warranty Program offers a warranty in a language you can understand. While under our warranty your bull is covered for injury, sickness or death. We will service your needs with another bull, credit or make a cash settlement. PREVIOUS BULL SALE PRICESAs we look forward to our 27th Annual Bull Sale, we also reflect on past sales. Over the past 26 years we have sold over 3400 bulls to cattlemen. We provide quality bulls at affordable prices. There are bulls for everyone. The bulls we offer are the complete top end of the calf crop. Usually over 75% of our bulls sell to repeat customers.

COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMERSVOLUME DISCOUNTS:

A minimum of 2 bulls purchased can trigger the volume discount. The discount will start at 2% beginning at $15,000 dollars and will increase by 1% every $10,000 dollars, up to a maximum of 7% on the entire purchase. The discount will only apply to bulls that are paid for in full on sale day. Absentee buyers will have 30 days extension for their discounts. Partnership bulls will not apply.

BIRTH WEIGHT INFORMATIONCalving ease is most often related to birth weight of a bull. This is partly true, but there are other factors that influence calving ease. Nutrition, gestation, and calf shape, play key roles. The cow influences at least 50% of the calves birth weight and shape. The mature size of the cow is an important consideration. You can relate cow sizes to your own program. On average our cow sizes will be larger, which in turn will amount to less birth weight on smaller cows. EPD’s for calving ease and birth weight accompany each lot.

POLLED vs HORNED vs SCURREDSome misconceptions or misunderstanding with regards to polled cattle. I will try to clarify this subject with a few simplified points.1. The polled gene is dominant to the horned gene.2. Homozygous polled means all offspring will be polled regardless of breeding.3. Double polled means both parents are polled, increasing the likelihood of the offspring being homozygous polled.4. Scurs are the result of an independent gene unrelated to either the horned or polled gene.5. Scurs is sex linked, being dominant in bulls and recessive in heifers, hence we see more scurred bulls than heifers.6. A horned animal may carry the scurred factor but is masked by the horned gene.

COLOR TESTINGA number of the black bulls have been tested for expression of color. Black bulls can be homozygous black which means progeny will always be black when bred to red cows. If they are carrying the red gene, some calves will be red. If the cows are red or black they are red carriers as well. Any bulls which have been tested for color will be indicated in the catalogue, or announced if homozygous black.

EXPORTINGWith regards to exporting bulls out of the country or for testing for admission to stud, Lewis Farms will arrange for all the tests but the cost will be borne by the new owner. This may take up to 3 weeks to get all the test results back.

SEMEN INTERESTOn a small number of bulls which will be indicated, we will be retaining some semen for “in herd use only”. This is collected for “on farm use only” meaning it can’t be sold. You as an owner of the bull may decide to have some of this semen as well, in which there will be a fee for having the semen collected. This acts like an insurance policy. Especially with one bull and multiple owners, the bull can be used naturally in one herd and used as A.I. in another herd, a win -win situation.We highly recommend a new young bull being insured through at least the first breeding season, as this is when the majority of the problems can occur.

FREE DELIVERY &AFTER SALE OPTIONS

Option A: Free delivery will be provided by Lewis Farms to central points in western Canada at the convenience of Lewis Farms, eastern Canada will be cost shared.Option B: Lewis Farms will keep bulls until May 1, 2012 for no charge. HEALTH CAREAll bulls to be sold are vaccinated and boostered against:1. IBR 2. P13 3. BDV 4. BRSV 5. Hemophilus6. 7- Way Blackleg Treatment, for both internal and external parasites (lice, worms and warbles). This was done in late November with a pour on endectocide.In order to promote red meat in Alberta, being of superior quality we give all injections subcutaneously. This is in accordance with the beef quality assurance program and is something which we should all practice in our operations. Most vaccines and antibiotics now are approved for subcutaneous usage.All bulls have been Double Fusogard Vaccinated for footrot. The initial and booster shots will have been given prior to the sale. We believe this extra expense will be worth it to our bull customers.

HERD MANAGEMENT OF REPRODUCTIVE DISEASE

Management tools, to help control reproductive disease in your herd are:A. Purchase virgin bulls from purebred breeders.B. Keep and maintain a relatively closed herd.C. In subsequent years - absolutely do not rent or purchase mature bulls and cull all open cows.D. Follow good biosecurity measures.E. Vaccinate for the reproductive diseases in your area. BVD and IBR should for sure be vaccinated against and others such as Vibrio, Lepto and Trich depend on your herd situation and geographic area.

POLLED TESTINGMost of the bulls in the sale have been genetically tested to determine whether they are homozygous polled (will throw all polled calves). When both parents are polled there is a large possibility their offspring are homozygous polled especially if one parent is homozygous polled. The genetic marker has been identified so now with a DNA blood test they can be identified before being sold. The results on bulls tested prior to cataloging for True Polled will be printed with the Lot information. The results will be one of these three: Homozygous Polled, Heterozygous Polled, Inconclusive (unable to determine, quite commonly proved to be Homozygous). As well there are Homozygous Polled bulls marked in the catalogue because we have both parents determined.

BREEDING SOUNDNESS EVALUATION

We look at 3 factors: Spermatozoal motility, morphology and scrotal circumference as well as doing a physical exam and watching the bull walk. During collection of semen we closely check the penis and inspect for signs of abnormalities. All bulls sold who exceed one year of age will have been classified as satisfactory in all categories and give us all indications they will go out for you and become a good breeding herd bull. All scrotal measurements will be posted on the supplement sheets. The only components which are not tested are the libido (sex drive) and the bulls ability to breed. This component is up to you, the purchaser. It is absolutely essential to watch your bull on the first few services to make sure successful breeding is occurring. Any problems or concerns with your purchase(s), please direct back to Lewis Farms and we will check into them for you.

Getting cows bred on time is pivotal to the success of every

cow-calf operation. And the most vital animal on the breeding

field often gets the least consideration...the bull.

Producers spend a great deal of time and money ensuring that

the bulls they purchase have the right genetics for their cow herd.

Many producers also recognize the value of an annual breeding

soundness examination before the breeding season. But far less

attention is paid to protecting these reproductive assets from a

common infection that can undermine a successful breeding season.

Footrot is caused by the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum, an organism commonly found in the digestive tract of cattle.

Any surface contaminated with manure may contain this organism.

F. necrophorum can also escape from the rumen and circulate

internally. An animal’s environment plays a role in the development

of footrot. Wet, muddy conditions or rough, abrasive terrain can

cut or bruise the skin between the toes, creating the right conditions

for the bacteria to multiply and cause disease.

The first signs of footrot are swelling just above the hoof and

lameness in the affected foot. As the swelling increases, the toes

spread apart and the animal becomes increasingly lame. Ultimately,

the skin between the toes dies and breaks open, releasing infected debris and the foul odour associated with footrot. Decreased appetite and weight loss are secondary effects. Although rarely fatal, the condition can result in tendon sheath infections and arthritis if not treated promptly. Furthermore, footrot is contagious because the infective material released from the feet of affected animals increases the likelihood that other animals will be exposed.

The cost of footrot is much higher than the price of treatment. A lame bull, especially one that is lame on a hind foot, is unlikely to breed many cows. If he quits working, even for part of the breeding season, you may be faced with late and open cows in the fall. That means more culled animals, more late-born calves and shorter calving to breeding intervals for your cows next spring. The good news for producers is that a footrot vaccination is available that can decrease the incidence and severity of this disease in your herd.

Combined with a sound nutrition program and good health management practices, footrot vaccination can help keep the upcoming breeding season on track. Talk to your herd veterinarian

about prevention strategies for your herd.

EPD'S & SALE TERMSEPD’S - EXPLANATION

EPD’s are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a useful tool in selection for traits when the accuracies are there. The EPD’s at the time of publication will be different at sale date due to association program updates. EPD’s incorporate the individual animal with its averaged ancestry performance. EPD’s do not compare across different breeds, they are individually based per breed. EPD’s indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. Use them for guidance in the direction you want your herd to go.

Calving Ease: Heifers (H) - The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to first-calf Heifers. A first calf heifer is defined as a female calving for the first time at 33 months of age or less.Birth Weight: A positive value indicates heavier than average birth weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average birth weights.Weaning Weight: The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205 day weight of a bull’s calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier than average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average.Yearling Weight: The EPD value predicts the difference in average 365 day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier than average yearling weights while a negative number indicates lighter than average.Maternal Calving Ease: Heifers (H) - The ease with which a sire’s daughter will calve as a first calf heifer. When comparing maternal calving ease EPD’s of two sires, the larger EPD indicates a higher % of unassisted births for calves born out of this sire’s daughters.Maternal Weaning Weights: The weaning weight of a bull’s daughters. Expected progeny performance reported in pounds. A positive value indicated heavier than average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter than average weaning weights.Maternal Milk: The milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Expected progeny performance is expressed in pounds of calf weaning weight. The EPD value predicts the difference (due to milking ability) in average 200 day weight of a bull’s daughter’s calves of all other bulls evaluated. Positive values indicate above average milking ability of daughters while negative values indicate below average milking ability.

PUREBRED ANGUS EPD'S:The red and black Angus bull EPD's are based on pedigree estimates therefore no accuracies. The red and black Angus cannot be compared against each other because of different EPD bases. (American Angus Assoc. & Red Angus of America compare as if red and black angus are two different breeds.)

TERMS & CONDITIONSTerms - The terms of the sale are cash, cheque or credit card at the sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made previous to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Should any purchaser fail to settle for their purchase, Lewis Farms reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

Purchaser’s Risk - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.

Announcements - Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.

Registry of Cattle - The proper Registration or Recordation paper, as the case may be will be transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.

Settlement - No incidental expenses such as feed, care, A.I. signing fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc. will be charged by either party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving the animal in question to be a breeder, then said animal will be reclaimed by the purchaser. Should the seller fail to prove the animal a breeder, then the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Should a dispute arise over the quality of a replacement animal, Lewis Farms will appoint a mediator.

We’d like to thank Ray Frehlick, Marlin Leblanc, Kopp Simmentals, Anchor Lazy U, and Mike Felner for purchasing Stubby females in our sale. As many people know Stubby was purchased in the spring of 2009 by Crossroad Simmentals.
