I am thrilled to welcome you to Sondheim on Sondheim, the inaugural production of an exciting new venture for Broadway at the Gardens

here at the Lewis Family Playhouse. As always, we are proud to bring you Southern California’s top directors, designers and performers to create high-energy, high-tech musical theatre for adult audiences – but for the first time, we are bringing these elements together to create a one-night only performance to supplement our once-a-year traditional production.

Stephen Sondheim has been called “musical theater’s greatest living composer and lyricist.” For performers and theatre lovers, his work is iconic – being cast in or attending a Sondheim show has a special appeal and value. His challenging, intricate music and complex, unique stories give Sondheim’s work a revered status within the canon of musical theater. Sondheim on Sondheim presents not only a celebration of his work, but provides an inside look at the man behind the words and music, and ultimately, an exploration of the creative process of creating great art.

Thank you for joining us on this theatrical adventure. We hope that you share our enthusiasm for this wonderful body of work and the man behind the music. Come back and join us for future Broadway at the Gardens productions.

About Stephen Sondheim Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born in New York City. From an early age, young Stephen showed a distinct aptitude for music, puzzles and mathematics. His parents divorced when he was only ten, and Stephen, an only child, was taken by his mother to live on a farm in Bucks County,

Pennsylvania. The area had attracted a number of well-known personalities from the New York theater world; a close neighbor was the playwright, lyricist and producer Oscar Hammerstein II.

Through Hammerstein’s profound influences and what was noted as one of the most famous apprenticeships in musical theater, Stephen Sondheim developed into the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in American Music Theater.

Among some of Sondheim’s acclaimed work include West Side Story, Anyone Can Whistle, Do I Hear a Waltz?, Sunday in the Park with George, earning Tony Awards for Into The Woods, Company, Follies, Tony, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd.

Over the last 50 years, Sondheim has set an unsurpassed standard of brilliance and artistic integrity in the musical theater. His music, steeped in the history of the American stage, is also deeply informed by the classical tradition and the advances of modern concert music. His words, unequalled in their wit and virtuosity, have recorded a lifetime of profound, unblinking insight into the joys and sorrows of life and love.
