Bullhorn Research 2012

LinkedIn is Under-Utilized
Candidates
• The average LinkedIn user logs on 2.9 times per month.
• 54% respondents reported that they did not use social media
at all in their job search (NACE, 2012)
Career Centers
• Less than 2% of career centers reported connecting with
employers on any social network and more than a third did
not log in daily (Osborn & LoFrisco, 2012)

LinkedIn and Social Justice
• Jobs found through informal recruitment via social media are
more likely to be high-wage managerial positions.
• In the United States, 27% of jobs are found through informal
recruitment.
• The odds increase by 2% for every dollar of hourly wage that the
position pays.
• By promoting access and the appropriate use of technology,
we can reduce economic inequality and transform LinkedIn
into a truly inclusive community (Brooks, 2012).

GETTING STARTED
Is LinkedIn Similar to Résumés?
Agreeable Similarities
• You should still emphasize
accomplishments, results,
numbers, and keywords that
align with clients’ career
aspirations.
• Experience is typically listed in
reverse chronological order,
although you can create a
functional skill section in the
summary.
Agreeable Differences
• More personable and
conversational
• Summaries are written in first or
third person
• Length
• NOT tailored to a specific position
• Limited formatting options
• Search engine optimization is
elevated
#NCDABoston @BillieStreufert @NancyRichmond
Should your profile duplicate your resume?
• Complementary (McIntosh, 2013 March)
• List only the most noteworthy achievements and results for each
position.
• A well-crafted profile will entice readers to request a résumé.
• Duplication (Alison Doyle, n.d.a)
• Some recruiters will search LinkedIn profiles without requesting
résumés. Missing details could jeopardize their candidacy.
• If members are using the Apply Now features of LinkedIn, their
profile should serve as their online résumé.
• Visit with your clients about each of these options to help
them make an informed decision about their strategy.
