There is a fear of writing down wrong information on the cards, juxtaposing numbers, and, like many facilities, we had returns from the lab because the specimen cards did not always contain all the necessary information. We wanted to mitigate these errors that affected the integrity of our program. Our staff loves Telepathy NBS because they no longer have to hand write the specimen cards. • Getting the specimen from the hospital to the lab and processed in adequate time

• No uniformity amongst state programs

Newborn blood spot screening programs are one of the most successful public health initiatives. However, they are still faced with challenges. The challenges are complex and varied:

APHL NBSGTS 2019Thank You for Making It a Success!

But some challenges are easily resolved by leveraging today’s technology.

• Delays in intervention due to illegible and incomplete patient information

• Lack of awareness (knowing if the specimen left the hospital or that it was lost on the way to the lab)

• Timely results for all babies (no news is not good news)

OZ Systems assists in solving challenges.

OZ Newborn Screening Suite reduces human error and improves patient safety, quality of care, and intervention timeliness.

OZ NBS PORTAL & E-FORM

OZ Telepathy™ NBSOZ Telepathy™ Newborn Blood Spot (NBS) prepopulates an electronic form with the state laboratory’s required data elements, which are printed on a label and affixed to the blood spot filter paper card.

• Manages the care of each baby by providing a worklist of babies needing screening and status for each specimen collected.

• Eliminates handwritten specimen cards to improve information content, legibility, and accuracy

• Improves accuracy by scanning the specimen barcode

• Simplifies hospital workflow by streamlining the process

• Displays age in hours in order to collect specimen at appropriate time

• Captures multiple specimens for an individual patient

• Improves timeliness for reporting back to the primary care physician and parent

• Provides specimen shipping and delivery notifications

• Receives recollection requests from the lab

• Captures the submitted information and stores it for future audits

* Hospital EHR will dictate which fields can be electronically sent.

OZ NANI™ Integrates patient demographics from the hospital’s EHR (Electronic Health Record) to all OZ software solutions, giving you an accurate denominator of hospital births in real time. You know who needs to be screened.*

OZ eScreener Plus™

OZ eScreener Plus™ (eSP™) is a baby-centric solution that allows you to manage all newborn screening data in one integrated child health record. OZ eSP™ interfaces with the patient demographics and birth information and accesses screening results to effectively integrate information along with diagnosis, follow-up and intervention. OZ eSP™ has been widely used in state screening programs for two decades for care coordination and to monitor program quality.

Track-Kit™ from STACS DNA reduces late specimens. Specimen tracking from collection to storage gives you an automatic end-to-end audit trail.

• Inventory management ensures never running out of viable specimen cards and identifies card wastage

• Notifies collectors of specimen card expiration (via OZ Telepathy™ NBS) which increases specimen quality

• Increases shipping efficiency of specimen cards by generating the shipping manifest and label

• Tracks packages AND specimens during shipping process

• Provides delivery notification to hospitals (via OZ Telepathy™ NBS) to meet CAP/CLIA regulations

• Alerts the lab and hospital when specimen delivery is missing or late

• Notifies which babies need a recollection (via OZ Telepathy™ NBS)

• Tracks specimen storage and destruction

• Provides global real-time view of state-wide activity

OZ Connect** Prior to the lab receiving the specimen, OZ Connect generates an electronic lab order (ELO) to the state laboratory information management system (LIMS) in an HL7 standards-based message with required newborn blood spot data elements. ELO provides the highest quality demographic data when coupled with OZ NANI.™

• Informs lab staff that the specimen has been collected

• Saves time by eliminating the re-keying of data elements at the lab

• Reduces missing or incorrect data received at the lab

• Allows for a cross check to confirm a specimen is received

Lab results are sent electronically via OZ Connect back to OZ eSP™ and via OZ eSP™ to the EHR. OZ Connect improves accuracy of the data reported to the newborn’s medical home.

• Reduces errors by eliminating manual data entry

• Improves timeliness of data returning to the hospital and ultimately to the newborn’s medical home

** Varies by state and depends on agreement with state laboratory.

What do you enjoy about being a parent?

I enjoy so many things about being a parent. I enjoy pouring all my love, all my time, and all my wisdom into each of my children’s lives. I love the overwhelming amount of happiness and joy they provide me every single day. I love being able to watch them grow, form their own unique personalities and blossom into amazing individuals. It’s like taking blank canvasses and slowly watching them become beautiful works of art right before your eyes. Being a parent introduced me to a love that I never even knew existed. My children have made me into a better me. Being a parent has also made me realize how much God loves us, as well—that in spite of everything we do, both good and bad, God still loves us the same. The same goes for me, as a parent: No matter what my children do in life or whoever they turn out to be, I will love them unconditionally.

How has being a parent affected your job at OZ or influenced your decision to work at OZ?

Being a parent makes me take my job at OZ more personally. As a parent, I want the best for not only my children but for every child. Because we at OZ impact millions of babies’ lives, it makes me work harder. My own son was screened nine times before he finally passed his hearing screening at birth. I was never told how many times he was screened and left the hospital thinking that he was okay. When he was about 8 years old, I noticed that he could hear much better with his left ear than with his right ear, and I decided to take him to an audiologist. As a result of working at OZ, I have reached out to hospitals informing them of over-screening and educating them on the importance of screening a limited number of times.
