Deployment Tools (MDT, ConfigMgr)
Refresh:
Update:
Core Deployment ToolsThe Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) replaces the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK)
•Supports older hardware (e.g. no NX/PAE/SSE support) and OSes•Required for ConfigMgr 2007 and ConfigMgr 2012 RTM, works with MDT 2012 Update 1•Includes Windows PE 3.1, USMT 4.0
Windows AIK for Windows 7 SP1
•Requires NX/PAE/SSE hardware support•Required for ConfigMgr 2012 SP1, recommended for MDT 2012 Update 1•Includes Windows PE 4.0, USMT 5.0•Avoid installing on the same machine as Windows AIK
Windows ADK for Windows 8
•Incremental updates to the latest tools•Includes Windows PE 8.1 and USMT “6.3”•Required for MDT 2013 and ConfigMgr 2012 R2
Windows ADK for Windows 8.1
Windows AIK vs. ADK
Windows AIK
•Windows PE 3.x•USMT 4.0•Windows System Image Manager•DISM•ImageX
ADK 8.1•Windows PE 5.0•USMT “6.3”•Windows System Image Manager•DISM•ImageX*•Application Compatibility Toolkit •Volume Activation Management Tool•Windows Performance Toolkit•Windows Assessment Toolkit
* ImageX is “deprecated,” replaced by DISM
ADK: Windows PE 5.0Minor enhancements:Automatic scratch space adjustment when not explicitly set (512MB for >=1GB RAM, 32MB otherwise)Support for up to 4TB of RAM with x64 (still 64GB for x86)Profiling support removed
New capabilities in Windows PE 4.0:.NET Framework 4.5, PowerShell feature packsBitLocker pre-provisioning enablementCompatibility issues with Windows 7 SETUP.EXE
Requires appropriate hardware supportNeeds NX/PAE/SSE processor support (not present in very old or low-end CPUs, also not supported by Vmware 5.0)
ADK: USMT “6.3”Adds support for Windows 8.1You might need multiple versions:
Adds support for Office 2013 (now available as a hotfix for USMT 5.0)Same core functionality from USMT 5.0:http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2012/04/13/new-usmt-5-0-features-for-windows-8-consumer-preview.aspx
Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8 Windows 8.1
Windows XP USMT 3 USMT 4 USMT 4, 5 USMT 5 Not supported
Windows Vista Not supported USMT 4 USMT 4, 5 USMT 5 Not supported
Windows 7 Not supported Not supported USMT 4, 5, “6.3” USMT 5, “6.3” USMT “6.3”
Windows 8 Not supported Not supported Not supported USMT 5, “6.3” USMT “6.3”
Windows 8.1 Not supported Not supported Not supported Not supported USMT “6.3”
ADK: Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM)Minor enhancements for Windows 8.1Export compressed recovery image (/Export-Image)Cleanup base components when superceded (/StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase)
New features from Windows 8:Taking over for ImageX, which is depricatedSupport for VHD and WIM filesPowerShell cmdlets for some operationsWindows 8 application provisioning and installation
ADK: Windows Performance ToolkitCaptures and analyzes information to help troubleshoot Windows performance issuesSlow bootGPO processing delaysApplication performance issues
Two main tools:Windows Performance Recorder, to capture information
Replaces XPERF.EXE and XBOOTMGR.EXEWindows Performance Analyzer, to view and analyze captured data
Replaces XPERFVIEW.EXE
ADK: Assessment ToolsPurpose:Gather metrics to determine if a system is running optimallyUse in lab environments to validate image, drivers, applications, configuration, etc.
Expected scenario:Create your “master” imageDeploy to each supported computer modelAutomatically run assessments and gather resultsAnalyze results
BitLocker EnhancementsPre-provisioningEncrypt disk before the operating system is installedInitiated from Windows PE 4.0 or higherProtectors get added once the OS is running
Encrypt only used spaceAutomatic network unlock on trusted wired networksStandard users can reset PINs
UEFI is importantNew disk layoutGPT instead of MBRRequires multiple partitionsBCD is not on diskRequires FAT32 boot partition, media
New version for Windows 8 logo machinesUEFI 2.3.1Faster POST, faster bootWill be able to support PXE
No cross-platform deploymentsNeed to use matching boot image (even for ConfigMgr)x64 machines won’t support x86 OS via UEFI boot
Secure BootLayer of security on top of UEFIUEFI verifies the boot loaderCan be configured to only load verified filesRequired for Windows 8 hardware certification
Yes, you can still boot other OSes(with x86 and x64)Turn off in the firmware for OSes that don’t support itUse newer OS distributions that do
Windows Store apps
Install via an “Enterprise App Store” using:• System Center 2012 Configuration
Manager SP1• Windows Intune
Provision using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2012 or DISM• Include in sysprepped image• Customize Start screen layout
ProvisioningInstallation
Register the application for the userAlways per-userDoes not require administrator rightsSide load or from the Windows Store
Register application on the computerInstall automatically for each userSide load onlyRequires administrator rights
Enterprise side loading requirements• Windows 8 Enterprise, domain joined or with a separate side load
product key • Windows 8 Pro or Windows RT, with a separate side load product key
Windows To GoThe next step for USB 3.0 drives:Install Windows 8 on a removable USB 3.0 drive (SSD, USB key, hard drive)Insert the drive into any computer and boot, without re-syspreppingEven move from UEFI to non-UEFI computers
Requires specific hardwareHigh-performance drives“Fixed” instead of “removable”Certified devices are available now
Provisioning the USB 3.0 drives is a necessary step:Wizard-based process to format and partition the drive, apply the image
With Windows 8.1, you can safely use the Windows Store
Hyper-V Client HypervisorJust like the server version, with specific hardware requirements:64-bit4GB RAM or moreHardware-assisted virtualizationSecond-level address translation (SLAT) support required on client Oses
Tools can detect SLAT:Coreinfo from http://www.sysinternals.comMDT (via WMI) “SupportsSLAT”WMI on Windows 8 and Windows PE 4.0, Win32_Processor property SecondLevelAddressTranslationExtensions
New UEFI support for virtual machines in Windows 8.1
Refresh and Reset Your PCSuccessor to Windows RE
New recovery options:“Reset your PC” = Remove all personal data, apps, and settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows.
Reinstalling the OS from an image, not preserving anything“Refresh your PC” = Keep all personal data, Windows 8 apps, and important settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows.
Traditional (non-Metro) apps will need to be reinstalled
Common denominator:You need an image to restore (locally)
Not intended for enterprise use
Slates and tabletsNew deployment challenges:No keyboardTouch screen-onlyOften no wired networking
Expected usage:Attach a USB keyboardUse an Ethernet dongle or USB storage
Disk partitioningDISKPART is “deprecated”Still supported, but eventually may go away
New PowerShell functionalityPresent in Windows PE as well
You can continue to use DISKPART – for now
Roles and FeaturesSupported mechanisms:DISM /Enable-FeatureServerManager PowerShell module
Older tools were “deprecated” with Windows Server 2008 R2:ServerManagerCmd.exeOCSetup.exe
MDT 2012 Update 1 moves to supported mechanismsAs appropriate for the OSWith UI improvements to show appropriate roles based on a selected OSAdds support for uninstalling too
MDT 2013Support for new versionsAdds support for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2 deploymentSupports System Center 2012 Configuration Manager R2Requires the new ADK 8.1 releaseNo longer supports Windows XP and Windows Vista deployment (continue using MDT 2012 Update 1 for those)
