NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT (NCEA) LEVEL 3

NB: This is the minimum requirement. Some Universities and countries require a higher level of entry (see the Careers Advisor for specific course information).

SCHOLARSHIP A separate scholarship assessment will be available for each subject for which achievement standards have been developed. Assessment will be by examination wherever possible, although there will also be provision for project work during the year to be externally assessed. Students should discuss this option with their subject teachers early in the year.

YEAR 14 Occasionally a Year 13 student returns to school for a second year in Year 13. In itself, repeating a year doesn’t necessarily guarantee success. Careful discussions with your Dean/HOD’s may be required for a suitable course of study.

University Entrance Requirements University Entrance (UE) will continue to be the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university.

NCEA Level 3 and

Three subjects – (at Level 3 or above) made up of 14 credits each, in three subjects and

Literacy – 10 of those credits at level 2 or above (see sheet below), made up of: 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing

and

Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: Achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or Unit standards – package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 – all three required).

Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your Record of Achievement

To achieve NCEA Level 3 Certificate you need to

Gain 80 credits. 20 of these credits may be transferred from your Level 2 achieved results.

In order to gain the certificate students will also need to have Level 1 literacy and Numeracy.

PREREQUISITE: 12 Level 2 Accounting Credits.

NB: May be offered by correspondence only, depending on numbers.

COURSE INFORMATION: This course builds on NCEA Level 2, giving students the skills to develop, analyse and interpret Accounting information.

NCEA LEVEL 3 ADVENTURE EDUCATION (proposed course)

PREREQUISITE: Level 2 Adventure or meeting with Head of Department and at their discretion.

COURSE INFORMATION: This course expands on what was learnt in Level 2. It is designed to give students access and skills in various recreational settings. It will benefit students who wish to go into the Adventure Tourism industry, the services and those who wish to learn about themselves when faced with a challenge.

QUALIFICATION POSSIBLE: Units working towards a: National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) in Level 3.

PREREQUISITE: 14 Credits (8 of which must be external) or better in NCEA Level 2 Biology, or at the discretion of HOD Science.

COURSE INFORMATION: Students will study the following topics: Plant behaviour and animal responses, cell biology and gene expression, a contemporary biological issue, evolution, biotechnology and human evolution.

QUALIFICATION POSSIBLE: 24 Credits in a combination of these standards towards NCEA Level 3.

NCEA LEVEL 3 CLASSICAL STUDIES *

PREREQUISITE: 12 credits or more in Level 2 English or History.

COURSE INFORMATION: Classical Studies is the study of the civilisations of classical Greece and Rome. We study them because of the historical importance of classical civilisation in the cultural tradition of Western Europe, which is an important part of contemporary New Zealand culture. In Classical Greece and Rome are the origins of much of our art, science, literature, law, philosophy, politics and religion. This is a "multi-disciplinary" subject. Included are topics from history, literature and art. This subject can be endorsed with Achieved, Merit or Excellence.

PREREQUISITE: 16 credits Level 2

COURSE INFORMATION: A full year that will cover topics such as communication, graphics knowledge, architecture and environmental design, engineering and technological design, media and technical illustration. Students will use Autocad, Inventor and Revit Architecture for digital design presentation.

PREREQUISITE: Level 2 Technology.

Indicators: Students will be able to combine elements from digital media applications and apply relevant codes of practice to communicate effectively.

PREREQUISITE: Completion of Level 2 NCEA Drama or Drama Teacher's permission.

COURSE INFORMATION: Numbers limited to 20. This is an advanced academic drama course and previous experience in drama is preferred. Some papers may not be offered in 2015 but internal credits will be a minimum of 18.

NCEA LEVEL 3 ECONOMICS *

PREREQUISITE: At least 7 external credits from Level 1 Economics. Level 2 Economics study is an advantage.

COURSE INFORMATION: Focus at Level 3 Economics is complex micro-economics. The key areas of study include efficiency and equity and government intervention. Students will consider issues affecting New Zealand and as part of their internal assessment requirements will need to keep a journal or blog and comment regularly on these issues.

NCEA LEVEL 3 EMPLOYMENT SKILLS

COURSE INFORMATION: The following Unit Standards will be offered to Year 13 students who have achieved NCEA Level 2 and are in a composite Employment Skills class with Year 12 and Level 2 students. The Unit Standards enable students to build a platform of skills and attributes that may contribute to successful employment and further learning.

QUALIFICATIONS POSSIBLE: 15 credits at NCEA Level 3. This subject is not University approved.

PREREQUISITE: Students KAMAR record must demonstrate consistent safe working practices and an adherence to expected classroom routines. Must have completed Level 2 Engineering.

COURSE INFORMATION: This is a full year’s course which covers Engineering Practice (workshop based projects) knowledge of Engineering Materials, Drawing and Design.

NCEA LEVEL 3 ENGLISH *

PREREQUISITE: 12 Credits in Level 2 English at least two External Level 2 Achievement Standards.

COURSE INFORMATION: Students study literature and language, including a film, extended text, style analysis, their own research project and an oral presentation. Level 3 English is an essential base for tertiary study in media, management, the arts, commerce, advertising and law. This subject can be endorsed with Achieved with Merit or Excellence.

LEVEL 1-3 ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)

CLASS ENTRY: The Oxford Placement Test, along with other written and oral testing taken during orientation, will determine the ESOL level the student will commence study at, and how many periods ESOL daily a student will take eg. at Beginner Level a student may require 2 – 3 periods of ESOL daily.

COURSE INFORMATION: ESOL is taught at 5 levels - Basic, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate. IELTS / TOIEC / TOEFL course materials and tutorials are available to Year 12 and 13 students on request. All levels focus on the speaking/listening/reading/writing aspects of English. NCEA is taught at Years 11, 12 and 13. Particular emphasis is placed on reading and writing, which is a major component of mainstream subjects and future tertiary education. If students reach Intermediate Level during Year 9 / 10 they can, if they wish, join the NCEA mainstream English Course in Year 11. ESOL has NCEA Unit Standards at Levels 1-3, which are endorsed as Achieved or Not Achieved

University Entry: Some Universities may require a 6.0 - 6.5 Band Score pass in IELTS (as well as

the required Year 13) entry into a New Zealand University. This is the same as for native English speaking students.

Those students taking Year 13 subjects which require a high level of English skill/ understanding, eg. History, Geography, will need an IELTS score of 6.0 before they will be considered for entry into these subjects or have entered school at Years 9/10 and have shown themselves to be able students.

NCEA LEVEL 3 FOOD HOSPITALITY

PREREQUISITE: Students KAMAR record must demonstrate consistent safe working practices and an adherence to expected classroom routines and must have Unit Standard 167 – Practise food safety methods in a food business under supervision. Other students may be admitted at the discretion of the HOD. Preference given to students who have studied and passed a Level 2 Technology course.

COURSE INFORMATION: Students work through an independent research project, working with an external client. Some Hospitality standards may also be offered.

QUALIFICATION POSSIBLE: This course will lead to university study and will complement the Professional Cookery course with Waiariki.

PREREQUISITE: Level 2 NCEA with some practical cooking experience. Students must be prepared to engage with entrepreneurs and in doing so develop entrepreneurial qualities.

COURSE INFORMATION: A programme like this is designed to help bridge the gap between two disciplines and makes the student a valuable asset to any industry.

This programme is designed to complement a wide variety of careers pathways.

This programme is allowing students to learn entrepreneurial business skills and food science in one programme.

PREREQUISITE: 9 Credits NCEA Level 2 French.

COURSE INFORMATION: This course will extend students beyond the familiar language patterns of Level 2 French. Students will learn to use language more flexibly in speaking and writing and extract details from unfamiliar spoken, written and/or visual texts. Cultural aspects will be understood through the language material.

NCEA LEVEL 3 VISUAL ARTS DESIGN * COURSE INFORMATION: This course will help prepare you for tertiary studies by focussing on the requirements for these courses Architecture, Fashion Design, and Graphic/Web Design. The units of work will be based around the students choice of a range of disciplines including a unit of Architectural Design, Fashion Design, and Graphic design, using a fun project based format. Tuition in Photoshop techniques, Illustrator, and Indesign are included in the programme, and drawing and painting techniques as well if required. NCEA LEVEL 3 VISUAL ART: PAINTING / PRINTMAKING *

(Students may take either subject in this line, or a combination of standards)

PREREQUISITE: Credits in Level 1 or 2 NCEA Visual Arts or equivalent portfolio.

COURSE INFORMATION: This course is designed to guide students to realising their creative potential through Fine Arts practices, using a variety of painting, drawing and image making processes and materials. Emphasis will be on exploration and experimentation, and based on the study of professional contemporary artists. The assessment units will be fun projects that are easy for students to engage in, based around themes of Landscape, Figures and Still life. A range of painting styles will be explored from Expressionism, Realism and Abstraction. Drawing tuition is provided throughout the course. Independent research is a key aspect in developing work at Level 3.

An art history unit can be added to the course if students wish to extend their programme from the practical investigations, and gain extra credits towards NCEA.

A field trip will start the year off to gather visual information, using “Figure in Cultural Space” as a theme, where we will photograph and sketch our models in a setting, from which to explore back in the classroom on canvas. QUALIFICATION POSSIBLE: 30 Arts domain credits towards NCEA Level 3

NCEA LEVEL 3 VISUAL ART: PHOTOGRAPHY *

PREREQUISITE: NCEA Level 1 & 2 Visual Art or Photography credits or equivalent portfolio

COURSE INFORMATION: This course will focus on digital processes and Photoshop techniques, and the inclusion of Fine Arts practices such as screen printing, fabric transfers, painting and collage. Students may use the darkroom if they show an interest in this area, but it is not required for assessment. The work developed for assessment for both internal and external assessments will be fun project based investigations around themes. These themes will use a variety of interesting professional Artist Models to help guide us to a successful body of practical work in each unit. Independent research is a key aspect in developing work at Level 3. You will need to have your own digital camera with aperture priority settings, a USB stick of 2GB, and a keen and motivated attitude. A field trip will be included in the course, to start off the year and gather visual information for our first assignment.
