1 Introduction: About the assignments

Mandatory Units (301-309) Coverage Learners must complete all of the following assignments and complete and pass all tasks within each assignment to achieve the mandatory units. Assignments Assignment 301 Pharmaceutical science Assignment 302 Pharmacy practice skills Assignment 303 Law relating to pharmacy Assignment 304 Pharmaceuticals: the complete dispensing process and applied techniques Assignment 306 Principles of medicines’ administration and the actions and uses of

medicines relating to blood, nutrition and sensory organs Assignment 307 Actions and uses of medicines relating to the central nervous, endocrine

and musculo-skeletal systems Assignment 308 Actions and uses of medicines relating to infections, malignant diseases,

immunosuppression, gynaecology and obstetrics Assignment 309 Actions and uses of medicines relating to gastro-intestinal, cardiovascular

and respiratory systems Assignment 305 (Human Anatomy and Physiology) Unit 305 outcomes have been incorporated into Assignments 301, 306-309 and therefore learners must achieve a pass in all of these assignments in order to achieve Unit 305. Tasks A number of the tasks require answers to be presented in a table or grid. Tables/grids are provided in the assignments which follow. Learners may use these or may wish to create their own tables/grids. Tables/grids created by learners must contain the same information as the tables/grid provided by City & Guilds in the assignment.

Recording requirements The following recording forms are provided for centre use and should be photocopied as required:

• Form VRQ 1 Learner and centre details • Form VRQ 2 Summary of achievement • Form VRQ 3 Learner assessment record, assignment feedback and results sheet • Form VRQ 4 Assignment witness statement form

Forms VRQ 1, 2 and 4 can be found from page 10 of this guide. Form VRQ 3 follows each assignment. It must be completed by the assessor and retained with the assignment for verification. Centres are reminded that forms VRQ 2 and 3 must be safeguarded by the centre throughout the learner’s period of assessment and maintained by the centre for a period of three years after completion of the qualification. Learners should be given a photocopy of these completed forms to keep in their file/portfolio.

Assignment coverage sheets An assignment coverage sheet accompanies each assignment indicating where unit outcomes are covered in individual tasks. Coverage of unit 305 outcomes in assignments 301, 306-309, is given in Unit 305 Assignment Coverage sheet.

Marking criteria All tasks are graded at pass/fail only. Detailed marking schedules and guidance accompany each assignment and, due to their sensitive nature, are kept in a password protected folder on the website.

Relationships with other qualifications Level 3 NVQ in Pharmacy Services Details can be found on the cover sheet of each unit in the Qualification Handbook. Key Skills This qualification provides opportunities to gather evidence for the accreditation in Key Skills. Full details can be found in Appendix 1 in the Qualification Handbook. Task A

1 Providing an effective customer service is essential when delivering pharmacy services.

a Define each of the following categories of customer:

i internal

b Identify four types of customers that would fit within each of the two categories defined in a).

c Describe how to develop an effective working relationship with each category of customer defined in a).

2 Read the scenarios and answer the questions which follow.

a A customer is waiting to collect a prescription from your pharmacy and is becoming rather agitated. The customer begins to complain to another customer waiting that the prescription is taking too long to dispense. You hear the customer mutter ‘Surely it doesn’t take that long to put a label on a bottle’

i Explain how to approach and communicate with the patient and how to identify their requirements.

ii State three factors that might affect good customer relationship and describe how each of these can be minimised to ensure customer expectations are met and potential conflict is minimised.

b Once the prescription is completed you begin to issue this to the customer who is the patient. The prescription is for a course of antibiotic eye drops requiring one bottle for each eye and painkilling tablets. Unfortunately your pharmacy only has one bottle of the eye drops in stock. When you explain this, the patient becomes anxious and angry, demanding a reason why there is insufficient stock and suggests raising a complaint.

i Explain how you would deal with this situation ensuring that an effective customer service is delivered.

ii Explain the procedure undertaken when assisting with a customer complaint .

iii Describe the action you would take to supply the outstanding bottle of eyedrops.

c Once this situation is resolved, you continue to issue the medication and undertake patient counselling. During this conversation the patient tells you that they are allergic to an antibiotic but cannot remember its name. The patient also asks you if there is any specific information regarding the eye drops, as this is a new prescription.

i State why undertaking ‘patient counselling’ is beneficial to patients.
