Introducing GGSWelcome to the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (GGS)!

GGS is an Inter-Faculty Interdisciplinary Centre of the Group of the Humanities at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven). It has been founded in 2007 and was recognized as a KU Leuven Centre of Excellence in 2010. GGS aims to make high-quality, fundamental and policy-relevant contributions to the study of globalization, global governance processes and multilateralism, with a particular focus on the role of the European Union. For instance, we are currently coordinator of FRAME, a large-scale FP7 project on Fostering Human Rights in European Policies.

This brochure introduces GGS, its mission statement, management structure, members and distinguished International Advisory Board. It also provides a brief introduction to two of our ‘regional’ focuses: the Baillet Latour EU-China Chair and the Leuven India Focus. As you read through this brochure, we hope to give you a flavour of our research and of our many initiatives and events.

GGS is a unique venture. Its bottom-up dynamics appeal to a great number of colleagues from within and outside the University: with more than 60 senior and junior members we host researchers from law, economics, political science, history, philosophy, area studies and bioscience engineering. We have attracted numerous research projects at the Flemish, Belgian, European and international levels. Our output of international publications continues to grow, and includes the Leuven Global Governance Book Series with Edward Elgar Publishing. We work together with academic and policy partners from all over the world. Apart from our fundamental research, we regularly conduct studies for governments, European and international institutions.

Should you have any question or suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact us.

MissionGGS carries out and supports interdisciplinary research on topics related to globalization, global governance processes and multilateralism, with a particular focus on the following areas, taking the many cross-cutting issues into account:

• The European Union and global governance• Human rights, democracy and rule of law• Trade and sustainable development• Peace and security• Emerging powers• Federalism and multi-level governance• Global commons and outer space• Non-state actors

In full recognition of the complex issues involved, GGS approaches global governance from a multi- level and multi-actor perspective. GGS considers non-European perspectives to global governance of great importance. It hosts the Baillet Latour EU-China Chair and the Leuven India Focus, organizes regularly transatlantic conferences and events focusing on Latin America and Asia, and takes a keen interest in the Global South.

In addition to its fundamental research, GGS carries out independent applied research and advises policy-makers on multilateral governance and global public policy issues. It regularly organizes conferences, seminars and debates on these issues, including the International Euro-Asia Summer School. GGS works with academic and policy partners from all over the world, including the European Parliament, European Commission, European External Action Service, Committee of the Regions, International Labour Organization (ILO), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), World Bank and World Trade Organization (WTO).

GGS publishes the Leuven Global Governance Series with Edward Elgar Publishing, makes it research available through academic journal articles, working papers, policy briefs and global governance opinions on its web site and regularly publishes a newsletter.
