Letterkenny community will take a stand against Water Tax

By Grace Mills

15/05/2014

The community of Letterkenny is preparing to take a stand against the Water Tax and the

installation of Water Meters.

The protest will be held at 2.00pm on Saturday, May 17th at the Market Square, Letterkenny.

A spokesperson told Donegal Now: “It’s important that people turn up to support the protest

because united we can beat this. We live in a democracy but the government is not listening to

the people, it’s time to tell them enough is enough, we cannot pay any more.”

Protests against the Water Tax and the installation of Water Meters have been carried out

countrywide in recent weeks, and it is clear that there is a strong opposition against them.

Last week, Donegal Now received pictures of a water mains pipe in the Crolly area of Gweedore

which was only replaced after rupturing. The pipes rusted condition caused outrage among

those who saw it, “This pipe was only replaced two days ago. The people of this county are

being forced to fork out a small fortune for the installation of water metres, and in the meantime

we’re being forced to boil water, which I might point out doesn’t always kill bacteria etc.” said

Mairtin Malcomhair who found the pipe.
