    Resident of 251 Thompson Run:

There has been a great deal of confusion surrounding the issues facing residents at the Grandeur Estates

Care Facility (251 Thompson Run), and more specifically the status of your residency at this location.

In light of this, we would like to invite you to an information session on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015 at 10

a.m., at 7071 Bayers Road, 2nd Floor, Meeting room 2 and 3. In attendance will be representatives from

the municipality, Nova Scotia Health Authority, and the Department of Health and Wellness.

Our priority is the safety of the residents currently in the property at Thompson Run. We want to ensure

you have all the information you need in order to make informed decisions about your care. To that end,

we will review with you specific issues we have identified as concerns relating to the use of the building

at Thompson Run as a residential care facility.

As you are aware, we have identified zoning infractions associated with the use of this property.

However, we would like to reassure that we would rarely, if ever, displace residents from any home

solely due to a zoning infraction. In this case, municipal staff have identified serious life safety concerns

regarding how the building itself is configured, and that the structure doesnt suit its current use.

The focus of our discussion at tomorrows meeting will be to address these issues and their implications,

specifically as they relate to those residents who may be considered non ambulatory. That said, all

residents are welcome to attend the meeting so they have the opportunity to hear directly from both

    the municipal and provincial representatives.

Municipal staff will speak to you about our duty to respond, as laid out in the provincial building code,

Fire Safety Act, Home for Special Care Act, Land Use By-law and Halifax Charter Part XV.

The Department of Health and Wellness will provide you with an overview of the Homes for Special Care

Act, specifically in relation to the requirement to be licensed when nursing home level of care is being

provided. Representatives from the Nova Scotia Health Authority will be in attendance to answer

questions around the long-term care placement process should you decide to accept a bed in a licensed

    nursing home.

In conclusion, we want to stress that we are hopeful that a resolution will be achieved that will result in

minimal disruption to you as residents of the home.
