Your Royal Highness, I am writing to apologise on behalf of Portsmouth City Council for the fact that a photograph of you opening the new Mountbatten pool in Portsmouth has been used by the Sun and the Mail in a story saying that the pool was 2 inches too short for competitions. This was a claim made by one of my opposition councillors, and then picked up by the national media. I am writing to assure you that the claim that led to these stories is completely untrue. I attach the official certificate from the Amateur Swimming Association to show that the pool is exactly the right size, and has room for the electronic touch pads at the end of each lane as well. The Sun are today printing a letter setting the matter straight. I know how fond both you and your husband are of Portsmouth. I apologise that your photo was used in the national press connected to a story that was completely untrue. I also know of your commitment to sports and sporting excellence. I hope that the actions of one councillor who did not check his facts did not cause you too much embarrassment and will not put you or other members of the Royal family visting Portsmouth in the future.
Yours sincerely
COUNCILLOR GERALD VERNON-JACKSONLeader of the Council
