· The pumping testEl have been conducted a ·~ two of the proposed well locations located in East Woburn.

The first area teoted was in the vicinity of.a truck t~rminal .south of Salem Street. At this location a group of 2-1/2 inch test wells were connected together and pumped continuously from Feb. 10~ 1964 to Feb. 22, 1964 at a rate of approximately 300 gpm while observations were made in adjacent test wells. The results of this test indicate that a theoretical gravel .pack-

manent screen casing of 24-inch diameter would yield approximately 350 gals. per min. which is at a rate of approximately one half million gallons per day.

The water quality was found to be comparable with the present ground water supplied to the City of Woburn, being low ~ 1ro~ and ~ngnnese. Copies of the results of these analyses are atta: hed .

!ons per minute. Observations were made in adjacent obse~va

t1on wells and a study of the results of this test indicate

that the transmissability of the water bearing for~tion wil~

permit .the withdrawal of 1200 gals. per min. ~rom two g~avel ·

packed wells, one at the location tested and the other at ob

r servation well No. 20. This does not ne·cessarily mean that ~he

· a~ea will support this withdrawal 24 hours a day continuously.t } ;

but the results do show a yield in excess of 700 gpm~ . \l, The . water analysis of samples collected during this test·•1

.1 1s similar to the foregoing test and are shown on the accoml .; I panying sheets . ~ r,. Graphs showing the water levels observed during the tests f...

are attached and you will note that during each pumping test' i · ' . the rate at which the water levels in the observation wells

dropped, decreased until a stabilized level was reached. ·This

indicates good transmissability and storage and is indicativ~

or a good ground-water supply.

The method of developing this supply would be to acquire

all land within a minimum radius of 400 feet from the respect!ve

gravel packed \olells.

Initially two gravel packed wells would be constructed,

one at each location of the respective pumping tests, namely

·< at Test Wells 8 and 16. Both of these wells would be put into

~peration on a 24 hour basis to supplement the present supply

and careful observations would be made on the groundwater levels.,. .. in the area. ·1. An analysis of the groundwater levels following about one t

~ .months continuous operation will reveal a more accurate estimate.! ,t of the quantity which could be vlithdravm from a third well to

., be located at Test well 20. The pumping equipment will. consist of electric motor driven~

.~ "l deep well turbine pumps with combination drives and ~uxiliary·~.•~

'J engines for use during electric power failure .. 1 ;· The pumps will also be controlled telemetrically from the

t cove st. pumping station. The water will be pumped into the dist . .) \ tribution system by means of a new pipeline to be laid in Salem I

~

t· st. from Pine st. to washington st .• This connection will permit

·1 the water to flow two ways depending on the demand, i.e. into the·t., center of the City or by way of the new lb-in~h main to Rag Rock

' ~ Reservoir.\ we estimate the cost of developing this supply based on

t current day prices to be as follows:

In summarizing the. test wen investigation, we feel that

the City fs fortunate in finding an additional ground\'later .. l supply of good quality in East Woburn and that the de\•elop,i.

ment of this S'..lpply will aid in overcoming the City 1 s "Water I

t Problem" .•

Very truly yours,
