Dear Friends of Northwest Catholic,

“True happiness is found in unselfish love, a love which increases in proportion as it isshared.” — Thomas Merton

Those present in the Cathedral of St. Joseph at this year’s commencement exerciseswere riveted by the words of Rev. Rick Frechette ’71. For more than two decades, Fr.Rick has been giving his most precious resources – his time and the love in his heart —to the poorest of the poor in Haiti. By giving all he has to offer, he brings dignity andhope to the impoverished and uneducated. During his talk, he impressed upon ourgraduates that, when he was a senior at Northwest Catholic, his future was no differ-ent from theirs — he began his life’s journey from the same pews in which they weresitting that evening.

The power of Fr. Rick’s message lies in the beautiful expression of his inner self. To be in his presence is to under-stand that he gives completely of himself to others. This manifestation of giving of self is the thread that runs throughthis issue of Logos.

The faculty, students, alumni, and parents in our community are endowed with many gifts. In different ways, andin varying degrees, we witness every day how these individuals share their gifts with others. The stories in this issuedemonstrate how people adopt the values they’ve learned here and carry them out into the world. I urge you to readthe article by Wilder Leavitt ’82, in which he describes how he assisted a helpless individual in dire need. Read theremarkable commencement speeches of Sarah Schwartz ’07 and Kimberly Oaks ‘07, two teenagers who were honoredfor their academic achievements yet chose to speak about the way their community service shaped their careers atNorthwest Catholic. Then I respectfully ask you to send me an email ([email protected]) and let me know ifthese pieces did not bring a tear to your eye.

There are students at Northwest Catholic who will follow the road taken by Fr. Rick. Many others will come tounderstand that their daily expressions of love, shared with friends and neighbors right here at home, can also trans-form lives in meaningful ways. Within the fullness of our community percolates the hopes, desires and joys of peo-ple whose happiness is found in the multifaceted ways in which they share their gifts.

In this issue, you will also find our Annual Report – which seems only fitting, since it is the financial gifts from ourmany donors that make the present possible for our current students. These gifts, too, are expressions of love and hopefor the future of our School. And, we — faculty, staff, volunteers, and Board members – are grateful to give ourselvesin service to them as well.

H aiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere,sits just a few hundred miles off the coast of the richest.Here in the United States, there is one doctor for every

500 people; in Haiti, it’s one for every 15,000. The infant mor-tality rate is staggering: 20% of all Haitian children die beforethey turn five.

This is the environment in which Rev. Richard Frechette ’71,Northwest Catholic’s 2007 commencement speaker, has laboredover the past 20 years – a labor of love that so captivated the 139graduates and their families, you could hear a pin drop.

Fr. Frechette arrived in Hartford late on June 5, the nightbefore graduation. He couldn’t leave Haiti, he said, until he’dcompleted one of his most gruesome, yet grace-filled, dailychores: burying the children who’d died overnight. “I bathethem, anoint them with scented oils, wrap them, and bury themin papier mache coffins we make ourselves,” he said. “[Because]there isn’t enough wood left in Haiti for them to have woodencoffins.”

He would be back in Haiti in time to perform the same taskthe next day. Despite the stunning sadness of these images, Fr.Frechette bore an amazingly peaceful mien as he addressed thebright and hopeful young adults seated before him.

“I remember when I was a student, reading 1984, and how itseemed so far away,” he said, adding that the unexpected deathof a classmate was another vivid memory from his high schoolyears. “You see how short our life is; how fast it goes. How arewe going to spend the precious amount of time we have togeth-er on this earth?”

He urged the graduates to follow a “golden thread” they’dreceived at baptism, the metaphorical link between themselves

and God. His thread had led him, he said, to Mexico, toHonduras, and then to Haiti, when he joined a charismaticpriest, Fr. William Wasson, who was building a home forHaitian children orphaned by the ravages of disease and vio-lence.

Richard Frechette’s personal “golden thread” is remarkable.At Northwest Catholic, he was actively involved in the commu-nity, participating in the Mission Club, the Dramateurs, SkiClub, Junior Achievement, Up with People, Great Books Club,NOWECA, and the Spanish Club. He was also a member of theNational Honor Society.

Because he can’t always build new schools,Fr. Rick also creates schools in the areaswhere the children actually live. These“street schools” may look like they’reabout to fall down, but inside they are anoasis for children who otherwise have noplace to go for a daily meal, clean water, anda sense of belonging.

A graduate of Assumption College, Fr. Frechette went on toearn two Master’s degrees in theology from St. John’s Universityin New York before being called to the Congregation of thePassion, a Catholic order of priests commonly referred to as thePassionists. After ordination, he went to Mexico to studySpanish and begin his ministry work. From Mexico, he went toHonduras for four years to open and run an orphanage for chil-dren.

In 1987, when Fr. Frechette and Fr. Wasson began their workwith Haitian orphans, mortality of children accounted for halfof all yearly deaths. The children served by their orphanage andin the surrounding areas were so afflicted with AIDS, tubercu-losis, starvation, and other problems that it was necessary toestablish a hospice, as well.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Haiti’s social and political con-

dition continued to deteriorate; today, Haiti has an 80% pover-ty rate. The “brain drain” that occurred caused many profes-sionals to flee the country. The need for professional health careproviders was urgent, and in the 1990s Fr. Frechette believed hispower to serve the people of Haiti had reached a plateau. Tomeet the overwhelming need for adequate health care, he deter-mined that he must leave Haiti for a short time to earn a med-ical degree in the United States.

Twenty-five years after graduation from Northwest Catholic,Fr. Frechette’s “golden thread” was taking him in a new direc-tion. He trained to be a physician at the New York College ofOsteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology inWestbury, New York. The school’s newspaper called him “one ofthe brightest stars of the class of 1998.” Fr. Frechette’s “goldenthread” led him back to Haiti, where he helped to establish a

thriving medical center. In 2003, he was appointed InternationalMedical Director for Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. In the fall of2006, he opened a new hospital on ten acres of land in Port auPrince with 150 beds, two emergency rooms, two operatingrooms, and a large intensive care unit. The hospital cares forabout 25,000 people per year and contains a large outpatientclinic with all specialties of pediatrics, including HIV and cancercenters.

As the audience at St. Joseph’s Cathedral sat transfixed by thisman’s message, one could not help but marvel at his peacefuldemeanor, which belied a store of boundless energy – an energythat springs from the progress he has made for the people ofHaiti. As committed to education as he is to health care, Fr.Frechette and his staff have opened small, one-room-style school-houses that now serve over 3,000 children. His new hospital willalso be the training center in pediatrics for the Catholic medicaland nursing school of Haiti.

In the face of immense odds, Fr. Frechette has persevered in hismission to bring better health care, education, and a sense ofhope to the children of Haiti.

Fr. Frechette concluded his address by echoing a message thegraduates had heard many times during their years at NorthwestCatholic High School: to whom much is given, much is expect-ed. He spoke to each member of the audience as if he was meet-ing with them one on one: “Our world is beautiful, but it is alsotroubled and tormented. This is the world that is waiting for you.The world needs you! It needs your enthusiasm, and your beliefthat you can set things right.

“You are very blessed,” Fr. Frechette continued. “But yourblessing puts upon you a burden – to care for this very troubledworld. Heal it. Set it up right again. We need you. The worldneeds you! May God bless you and help you to submit your headto your heart so you may answer God’s invitation to you allthroughout your life.”

Because he is both priest and physician, Fr. Rick is able tominister to the physical and spiritual needs of thousands ofpeople in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Student Perspective

I woke up on the morning of my second birthday incrediblyexcited to put on my Little Mermaid costume. It was clearfrom my repeated exclamations of, “I’m a mermaid! I’m a

mermaid!” that there was no one else I would rather be. I’m sureall of you can remember your own childhood heroes, whether itwas one of the Disney princesses or perhaps one of the TeenageMutant Ninja Turtles. Either way, there was something aboutthese figures that made us want to grow up and be just like them.

As we have matured, not only have our role models changed,but so have our ideas about what we want to be when we growup. Some of us might want to be as rich as Bill Gates, as famousas Paris Hilton, or as athletic as Michael Jordan. In today’s socie-ty, these ideals of wealth, fame, and position are often how successis defined for us. While all of these are noteworthy accomplish-ments, I do not think that these are the only standards by whichwe should measure success. During my four years of high school,I have encountered many people who in my opinion exemplifysuccess. None of them have been celebrities, millionaires, orprominent figures. In fact, the successful people I have met areordinary people, who love what they are doing and find meaningin their lives. Over time, they have become my new role models.

One place where I have met successful adults has been in theclassrooms of Northwest Catholic. My teachers have shown apassion and love for teaching that goes beyond their subject mat-ter. In Mrs. Gillespie’s ACTS class, I found myself eating a mealwith a family of Liberian refugees, leading a blind person aroundthe Westfarms Mall, and serving food at a soup kitchen during anamazing five-day urban immersion. In American Mind class, Mr.Shukie discussed how history repeats itself and helped us to drawconnections between the Vietnam War and the present-day war inIraq. I left that class with a much greater appreciation of how his-tory applies to my life. And who other than Mrs. Metzler couldmotivate exhausted high school students to be at school at 6:30 inthe morning to do calculus problems, and on top of that, get allof the boys in her class to wear bright pink t-shirts? The teachersat Northwest Catholic have shown me that they care not onlyabout how we develop academically, but also how we develop aswell-rounded people who are ready to contribute to society.

I have also met very successful people in the numerous

Thursday afternoons I have spent at the Catholic Worker Housein Hartford. There I found adults devoting their lives to othersand living in voluntary poverty. To some, this existence withoutany wealth or status might seem to be the opposite of success, butanyone who has spent time at the Catholic Worker knows better.The Catholic Workers have shown me that one true measure ofsuccess is how much you do for others.

But in the past year and a half, one particular person in my lifehas risen to the top as one of the most successful people I know.This person, my Uncle George, died just a few weeks ago of braincancer. If anyone lived life to the fullest, it was my uncle. Hedelved whole-heartedly into his interests, which included reading,mountain biking, cars, history, and spending time with familyand friends. The Uncle George I remember was constantly offer-ing to bring my sisters and me to a museum, coming over towatch a movie, or celebrating our birthdays with us. He meas-ured his own success not by the amount of money he had, his job,or the size of his house, but rather by how much he was enjoyinglife. He was truly remarkable.

and left him unable to drive his prizedPorsche or read his favorite books, hefound new ways to channel his energy andenthusiasm. George developed a keeninterest in photography. On his final tripto Arizona, he woke up early every morn-ing with his camera in hand, ready to takethousands of photographs, even though heprobably knew he would never have thechance to see them all. The simple pleas-ures that my uncle enjoyed certainly werenot without meaning or purpose. Georgereminded us regularly that it was moreimportant to focus on what you can do,rather than dwelling on what you cannot do. By embracing hislife in both sickness and health, my uncle George gave us wonder-ful memories of him as a happy and active person.

One of my favorite memories of my uncle happened this pastEaster, shortly before he died. He used to love to wear a particu-lar shirt, one that said “Life is Good” on the front. You have prob-ably seen the shirts, bumper stickers, and other items that bearthis logo. They each contain an image that will make you smile,such as a man on a bike, a hammock,or cup of tea, with the words “Life isGood” written below. On Easter, myentire family wore our own Life isGood shirts, and took pictures sur-rounding my uncle. When I looked atthe pictures later, I saw on my uncle’sface an expression of complete andtotal happiness. The pictures amazedme. I couldn’t even imagine that a per-son who was terminally ill would beable to sincerely believe that “life isgood.” Yet, it was written all over hisface that this was exactly how he felt.To be able to appreciate life at amoment such as that, to me, is the ultimate success.

In the end, there might have been some wisdom in my child-hood admiration of the Little Mermaid. While I no longer hopeto become a mermaid, I continue to admire some of Ariel’s qual-ities. Ariel really knew who she was, and she didn’t let anyonestop her from reaching her dream. As a child, I watched with aweas Ariel rose to the surface and finally stood on her own two legs,

ready to begin her life above the water.Now, it is our turn to find our own legs,and begin to live the lives that we choose.

I think that as we move on to the nextstage in our lives, each one of us needs todevelop our own definition of success, andlet that definition shape our decisions.God has a different plan for each and everyone of us. Maybe we are meant to becometeachers, athletes, unpaid volunteers, rockstars, priests, stay-at-home moms, or doc-tors. Whatever it is that you love, embracethat calling and you will have fulfilledGod’s plan. Because in the end, if you can

look back on your life, with all of its ups and downs, and say that“life is good,” I think that will be the true measure of success.

As I look back on my four years of high school, I am filledoverwhelmingly with the feeling that life is good. I can see manyimages in my mind that are worthy of a “life is good” t-shirt.Images of friends sitting together in the caf; of NorthwestCatholic students dressed in green to support the basketball team;

of sunny afternoons with the children at theCatholic Worker house; of my uncle smil-ing in his “Life is Good” t-shirt; and finally,of all of you sitting in front of me, ready tograduate. To me, these images do not onlydemonstrate that life is good, but that Godis good. We have been blessed in so manyways, and for all of these blessings I am verygrateful. I would like to take this opportu-nity to thank everyone who has helped meget where I am, but especially my parents,who have provided me with a tremendousamount of support.

I hope that as we look back on our fouryears of high school, we can all see that our

lives have in fact been very good. I know that all of you willbecome great successes in the future, and I wish you the best in allthat you do.

Student Perspective

I would like to begin my speech with a wish for all of us heretoday. My hope for all of us is to be like children. Not toact childish, but to be child-like. I hope for us to be mature

in behavior but young at heart. Many people view graduation asa time to grow up, a milestone that marks the end of high schooland the start of college, of living on your own, and becoming anadult. However, I hope that at this important moment in ourlives we all can maintain some of our childlike qualities.

The first quality we are taught as children is to mind our man-ners. As children we are all taught to say please and thank you toeveryone, and to be gracious and grateful. As we grow older, webegin to take the people and the events in our lives for granted.In reality, we never could get through life alone. I believe thatthese manners, which we are taught as children, should be carriedwith us into adulthood. I challenge everyone to be like a child …to say please and thank you to the cashier at the grocery store, tothe driver on the bus, to the attendant at the movie theater, andto the waitress at a restaurant. Just say thank you to everyone whodoes anything to improve your life. Do not take anyone for grant-ed. I truly believe those two words, “Thank you,” have the powerto make someone’s day.

With these thoughts in mind, I believe that graduation shouldbe a time for all of us to say “thank you” to everyone who hasmade this evening possible. First and foremost, we should thankGod for all of His special blessings. We should thank our friendsand classmates, our siblings and family, and especially our parents.But also, thank you to all those people behind the scenes who

made our lives a little bit easier through our high school career:the administration, faculty, and staff of Northwest Catholic, thecafeteria ladies, the custodians, and the librarians. All of these peo-ple are what made Northwest Catholic truly memorable. None ofus would be here today, and I know I certainly would not be heregiving the salutatorian speech, if it were not for the efforts of allof these people.

The next quality of a child that I hope we will retain into adult-hood is enthusiasm. Children are enthusiastic about every taskthey do. As teenagers and as adults, I think we begin to be lessexcited about the little moments in life. We tend to just go throughthe motions of everyday living. We go to school or work, completeour tasks and go through all of the mundane details. But as chil-dren, everything that we do, we see as the greatest and most fun wehave ever had. To a child, nothing else matters but the activity theyare focused on at that moment. I saw this fact very clearly a fewmonths ago while volunteering.

Hartford to supply primary medicalcare to the uninsured. The van is most-ly volunteer run and is funded throughdonations from the Archdiocese ofHartford, St. Francis Hospital, andmany generous people. A few monthsago, I was with the van at St. Peter’sChurch on Main Street, and a youngwoman came in with her daughter andson. The woman was 21, her son anddaughter were four and two, and shewas pregnant with her third child. Thevan usually does not encourage parentsto bring their children because the doc-tors do not specialize in pediatrics, andbecause all children in Connecticut arecovered under Husky Care (healthinsurance for children). However, theyoung woman told the volunteers that the children’s father hadforced her and their two children out of the house. She could notget back her children’s birth certificates, which were necessary toqualify for the Husky Care program. They were living betweenshelters, unsure where they would be from one night to the next.

Her little boy was adorable and full of life. He kept comingover to where I was working on files, talking to me, and asking myname. I started playing with him and gave him a sticker book. Heimmediately dove into the book and made scenes with the stick-ers on the pages. Then he started putting them on his foreheadand all over his arms. The little boy had a contagious giggle thaterupted every time he put a new sticker on his head. He gave mea sticker to wear and started giving the stickers to other volun-teers. He was thoroughly enjoying that sticker book.

I met the little boy and his family on a cold, wintry day. Thewaiting room in the House of Care van had no heat. I had beencollecting blankets at my church to distribute at the van to helpthe waiting patients stay warm. One of the donated blankets wasa shawl that had a string to tie around the shoulders. I took theshawl and gave it to the boy. I tied it around his neck like a capeand said, “Look, you’re Superman.” He erupted into a series ofgiggles and began zooming through the room as if he were flying.

This amazing little boy taught me alife lesson. He had no idea how hardhis life was. He had already enduredmore hardships in his four years than Ihave experienced in my 17. But justlike any other child, he did not eventhink about his circumstances, and hewas completely absorbed in whatever itwas that he was doing. He was enthusi-astic about the stickers and his newcape. His enthusiasm for life was con-tagious. His story provides an examplefor all of us.

I hope that as we go onto college weall will remember to be like a child.Even though we will be burdened withwork and responsibilities, we need to

remember to look past the hardships and to engage everything inlife with the enthusiasm of a child. I hope we will all learn, buildfriendships, practice, rehearse, and work with enthusiasm. I hopewe never lose that joy for life that we effortlessly perfected when wewere very young.

Gratitude and enthusiasm, I believe, are very important char-acteristics that we must take with us from our childhood. Thesequalities are necessary for a truly successful life. In Matthew 18:3,Jesus tells us “Truly I say to you, unless you …become like chil-dren, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus taught usthat we must retain some childlike qualities to lead a truly happyand successful life.

Even though every once in a while throughout college (and forthe rest of our lives), we are all bound to act childish, I pray thatwe will always be child-like. I pray that you will remember to sayplease and thank you, and that you will be excited for everythingyou do in your life. God bless you, good luck, and congratula-tions to the class of 2007!

T he man looked at me through the most frightened eyes Ihave ever seen. He was bleeding profusely, breathinghard and moaning from the intense pain that I could

only imagine he was feeling. Seconds earlier, he had been jock-eying for position on our interstate highway when he decided toexit from the far left-hand lane. He didn’t make it. The carcrashed off the ramp and slammed into a copse of trees.

My wife and I were seconds behind him. Because I am anemergency medical technician (EMT), I knew I had to act fast.Stopping in the breakdown lane just past the accident, I jumpedout and grabbed a medical bag I keep in the back of my truck.A bystander was holding a blanket against the man’s chest. “Ithink he has a sucking chest wound,” he said. I asked whetherhe could see any of the man’s ribs and whether anything wasprotruding from the wound; then, I applied pressure to theman’s chest and told the bystander to continue holding pressure.A police officer arrived; I asked him to radio the county’sEmergency Communications Center and tell them that we hada priority one, chest trauma patient with a partially severed arm,to send a medic unit and the rescue squad, and to alert the local

trauma hospital that we were coming. I identified myself to theinjured man and started asking him the questions every EMT inthe country asks: “What is your name?” “Do you know whereyou are?” “Can you tell me what happened?” “Can you tell mewhat hurts?” I was assessing his level of consciousness, the qual-ity of his circulation, whether his airway was open, whether hehad a pulse, and whether he had any uncontrolled bleeding. Iwas trying to determine the extent of his injuries and whetherthey were life threatening. He was dying.

R ecently, Matt Fitzsimons asked my opinion aboutwhether, and how, students’ high school experiences pre-pare them for the future and influence their postgradu-

ate choices. For me, the answer is unequivocal; in fact, it wouldtake many pages to enumerate all the ways that NorthwestCatholic has influenced me. But one thing stands out: that is,that the point of our lives is not about simply pursuing achieve-ment and attaining success; it is about stretching ourselves byhelping others. I learned this lesson over and over again atNorthwest Catholic, not only in my religion courses (where one

might expect it), but also in science labs, class-rooms, clubs, and on the track, through thewords and deeds of teachers, coaches and fellowstudents.

This notion of stretching oneself through serv-ice has coalesced for me into a personal philosophythat I can easily attribute in part to studyingancient Greek cultures in Dan Marcus’s Englishclass; history and society in John Shukie’s class; orbelief, faith and philosophy in Fr. Bock’s seminar.And that philosophy is this: to properly attend toourselves, we must focus on developing our minds,our bodies, and our spirit. It is not enough to doone or two and not the others. Personal stabilityand strength comes from crafting all three legs ofthe human platform so that it will support the tri-als and challenges that come before us. To this day,I try to do for myself what Northwest Catholic didfor me then: educate my mind, train my body, andfeed my soul.

For me, a perfect expression of this philosophy might be to livea hundred lives and pursue a hundred interests. But I am contentwith the experiences I have had: as a military officer, a managementconsultant, a lawyer, an EMT, a husband, and most of all, as a com-passionate member of my community trying to make a difference.These diverse experiences add richness and, I hope, stretch myskills, character and ability to contribute in three dimensions.

T he police officer has returned, telling me that additionalresources are on the way. Although I can’t open any ofthe car doors, I am treating the severe injuries the driver

has to the left side of his body. His breathing has become morelabored, and I can see a halo of sweat forming around his head,which I know means he is getting worse. I get a mask deviceready because I am pretty sure that I will have to lean into thecar and begin CPR shortly. I am holding his head trying to helphim breathe when he says, “I’m fading.” “No, you’re not!” Irespond, squeezing him on the neck in the hope of eliciting painand responsiveness.

I f we are the sum of our experiences and our decisions, thensurely some of our most enduring lessons occurred in ouradolescence. My first English teacher, Mary Fran Hennessy,

gave me the confidence and instruction I needed to become abetter writer. Toward the end of freshman year, she encouragedme to sign up for the honors-level sophomore course. She knewI could do it, but I lacked confidence. She believed in me whenI didn’t, convinced me I was capable and made a difference.Carol Canora stimulated my interest in science by demandingacademic rigor – yet she tempered her high expectations withgenuine compassion. When I approached her about an experi-ment I’d read about to calculate the force of gravity, she encour-aged me to reproduce the experiment in the physics lab on hertime. She stayed after school and gave me the run of the lab.While I made my measurements, I felt like a colleague, anotherdiscoverer of the wonders of the scientific world. And MikeGriffin, in his role as track and field coach, helped me learn howto lead. He would often toss me a stopwatch at the beginningof practice, give me the training schedule for the afternoon andentrust all the sprinters to me. I’m not sure that always workedthe way he planned; we were high school kids, after all, prone tocutting corners whenever we could. But I had moments run-ning alongside my friends, clutching the digital stopwatch,when I really felt like I was leading the pack – a skill I wouldcome to rely on heavily as an Air Force officer.

Equal in importance to the roadmap laid out by adults atNorthwest Catholic were the interactions I had with my fellowstudents. It is true that if you want to become a better runner,you should run with those who are stronger and faster than you.They will elevate you in a way no individualized training can.When I saw my classmates achieve in the National Honor Society,on the yearbook staff, in student government, on teams, and espe-cially in the classrooms, I wanted to be like them. Although noneof us realized it at the time, they were my role models, allowingme to see me in them and what I might be capable of doing.

J ust then, I see familiar faces. One of the units from mySquad has arrived. I feel a swell of relief as I call for a back-board, oxygen and trauma dressings and begin squeezing air

into my patient’s lungs. At the same time, other firefighters aretearing off the car door so we can extricate the driver. He’sabout 270 pounds, and it takes six of us to get him on the back-board. I stabilize his traumatized arm as we sidestep over theuneven ground to get to a nearby ambulance. The rear doorsclose, the ambulance pulls away with lights and sirens blaring,and it is over. As I peel off my latex gloves, I realize I am shak-ing uncontrollably. “Do you think he will make it?” the policeofficer asks. “I don’t know,” I reply. He asks, “Do you think wesaved his life?” I pause to think. “I’m not sure, but I think wemade a difference.”

And that is what I have carried from days at NorthwestCatholic: strive constantly to improve yourself, to serve your fel-low human beings, and, if you are able, to make a difference.

— A 1982 graduate of Northwest Catholic High School, WilderLeavitt earned a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering from SyracuseUniversity in 1986. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in theU. S. Air Force and served for the next seven years as an aircraft andmunitions maintenance officer. After leaving the Air Force, heearned an M.S. degree in 1995 from MIT’s Sloan School ofManagement. He worked for several years as a management consult-ant for Coopers and Lybrand, but he returned to school in 1998 as alaw student at the American University Washington College of Law.In 2001, law degree in hand, he began practicing intellectual prop-erty and environmental law in several Washington, D.C. law firmsbefore starting a solo practice in Bethesda, Maryland. He focuses onmanagement consulting and nonprofit/public interest law and volun-teers as an EMT and ambulance driver at the Bethesda-Chevy ChaseRescue Squad. Wilder is married to Mary Morningstar and is study-ing to be a paramedic.


M onday mornings are always busy at Northwest Catholic– but even more so on the first Monday of the month.

That’s when, amid the normal hustle and bustle of a new schoolweek, the makings of a giant potluck supper miraculously appearin the office of Campus Ministry Director Kristi Gillespie — theliteral and figurative home of Northwest Catholic’s myriad com-munity service activities.

Mike Freund ’10 brings chocolate chip cookies (made withfreshly ground cinnamon).

Michael Lathrop ’08 and his family are known for their out-standing cakes.

Kaela Paternoster ’09 and Erika Dueñas ‘10 pitch in with

tons of groceries and paper goods, cutlery and other supplies.

And other students take turns providing side dishes: noodleswith cheese sauce; frozen Italian mixed vegetables; tossed salad;bread and real butter.

Meanwhile, at home over the weekend, Mrs. Gillespie and sev-eral of her colleagues – usually Claudia Hart and Mark Dodd –prepare about 25-30 pounds of chicken breast, the foundation for“Chicken Catalina,” Northwest Catholic’s signature entrée in themulti-course meal that’s served to about 50 people at the MannaProgram soup kitchen at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford.

“The longer I teach here, the more I realize that we all need todo more to help others,” said Dodd, a science teacher, explainingwhy he’s become a “Chicken Catalina” chef.

“The guests get very excited when they see us coming in withthe chicken – it’s a very popular dish,” said Mrs. Gillespie, her eyes

Service Projects Build Community– On Campus and Off

lighting up. “They call it the ‘red chicken,’ because of the sauceit’s baked in. They love it when it’s a Northwest Catholic night.”

And although the chicken is part of it, it’s probably not the onlyreason the NWC night is so popular. When the NorthwestCatholic crew is there, smiles abound – from the clients enjoyingthe meal, of course, but also from the many different members ofthe Northwest Catholic community who come together for threehours, one Monday a month, in this very well-oiled machine.

“We have our system down to a science,” explained Mrs.Gillespie. After the students’ donations come in on Monday morn-ing (see sidebar), she places a call to Al Masciocchi, father of Kate’06 and Rebecca ’08, who always stops to pick up anything that’smissing while on his way downtown to help serve the meal. (Hisson Matthew, a sixth grader at St. Timothy Middle School, comesalong to help – he’s known as the “chocolate milk boy,” because hedelivers and mixes the sweet powder with milk at each table.)

At about 4:30, Mrs. Gillespie and Ms. Hart retrieve the food

from the school refrigera-tor (where it’s been kept cold), load a schoolvan with supplies and student helpers – somewho come every month, some who comewhenever they can — and head to ChurchStreet, where the soup kitchen is located. TheNorthwest Catholic group prepares the dinnerbetween 5:00 and 6:00pm; serves it at 6pm(restaurant style); and then cleans up, packagesand stores any leftovers and heads out, arrivingback at school between 7:00-7:15pm.

The number of helpers varies all the time,Mrs. Gillespie said, but is generally betweenfour and 12. Besides Ms. Hart and Mr.Masciocchi, other helpers may include teachers(like Joan Keating-McKeon, who providesmany groceries); coaches (like John Mirabello,who brought his young son to help at the sum-

mer meal); alums (like Molly Eastman ’06, Amanda Tremblay ’07,and Kate Flaherty ‘07); and current and alumni parents (like Brian

And then there are the current students, of course.

“It does take time, but I have time to give,” said MichaelLathrop.

Kaela Paternoster adds that, as someone who feels shy herself,she can understand why a new volunteer might feel nervous orunsure about participating. “I’ve been involved since freshmanyear, and I still don’t know what to say when I get there!” sheadmits with a sympathetic smile. “But they help you along. Thepeople there will ask you about yourself, and before you know it,you are talking to people and you feel kind of like you made anew friend.

“It’s one of those things where you just have to put yourselfoutside your comfort zone,” she continued. “You definitely getback two times as much as you put in.”

“I go to the soup kitchen because I have seen that there is aneed to provide this meal, and it is something I am capable ofdoing,” said Ms. Hart, chairman of the Math Department.“Problems like hunger seem so large and insurmountable, but ina small way we can help this group of people.

“I also like seeing a different side of our students as we workside-by-side rather than in a teacher-student relationship, “shecontinued. “They show leadership and compassion in the workthey do.”

Her mother, Kathleen Hart (PP ‘72,’73,’74,’76,’78,’80,’82),participates by helping to underwrite the cost of some of theingredients in the meal her daughter prepares. “She wanted tobe involved,” Ms. Hart said.

“Sam Dusza’s mom came to help out this summer, eventhough Sam had just graduated,” Mrs. Gillespie said. “She saidshe really just enjoyed the camaraderie of our group.”

Teresa Bournique ’84, who has returned to her alma mater asa religion teacher this year, volunteered at the Manna Programin August – just a month after she was hired, and before she’deven met any of her students.

“How inspiring it was to receive my first impression ofNorthwest Catholic High School students and parents in thecontext of preparing and serving a soup kitchen meal!” said Mrs.Bournique. “The joyful, humble, respectful, and efficient man-ner of the volunteers that night set the tone for my work inteaching and campus ministry at NWC.”

President’s Letter

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

We wish to thank you for your support of our mission to educate the whole person in a dynamic educational environment that thrives in its diversity. Withyour gifts of time, talent and treasure, you truly make a difference in the lives of the students we are privileged to serve.

Here at Northwest Catholic, we cherish the many intangible gifts you share with us; indeed, throughout this issue of Logos, we celebrate the myriad waysthat members of our community share their gifts with family, friends and others whom they meet in the world around them.

We also acknowledge the abundant “treasures” or financial gifts that we are blessed to receive, and we do so in the pages of this Annual Report.

Northwest Catholic relies on annual giving for 8% of the operating budget. Your generosity to the Northwest Catholic Fund, previously known as theAnnual Fund, has been inspiring to our community during the 2006-07 fiscal year: Gifts totaled $660,469, an increase of $84,321 (14.7%) from last year’stotal of $576,148. These gifts allow us to:

• Support and invigorate the caliber of the teaching essential to engaging students in the pursuit of knowledge;

• Ensure that financial aid remains at the heart of the school for students of need; and

• Perpetuate an environment that emphasizes academic excellence, faith in God and service to others.

We also depend upon the generosity of those who contribute toward our modest but growing endowment,those who make directed gifts to capital projects that enhance our facilities, and those who give generously toour financial aid fund. The school also posted capital and endowment gifts of $383,836 and $168,148,respectively.

The result? Our Advancement program yielded a total of $1.261 million during this past fiscal year, rep-resenting not only donations to the Northwest Catholic Fund, capital projects, and the endowment, but alsogifts in kind and revenue from three special projects: the annual golf tournament, Saturday Night Live, andthe annual magazine drive.

All of us — students, faculty and staff — benefit from this generosity, as it enables us to continue to offerthe unique Northwest Catholic education in the manner that you all have come to expect. From the bottomsof our hearts, thank you.

Just after the end of this past fiscal year, our Advancement department entered a period of transition. Webade farewell to Linda Massaro, who had served so ably as our Director of Advancement for the past five years,and to Assistant Director Caitlin Dowd and Advancement Assistant Debbie Kennedy.

We are delighted that our new team includes not only Colby Thresher, a stalwart NWC AdvancementOfficer and promoter of our planned giving program, but also Jane Leary (AP ’05, ’07), our new Directorof Constituent Relations, who, like Colby, has deep and long-standing ties to the Northwest Catholic com-munity. Debra LeBel, our new Advancement Assistant, is another integral member of our team.

Just as I thank all of them, I thank all of you: Thank you for demonstrating, in so many ways, how muchNorthwest Catholic means to you. Please know that it is greatly appreciated.

Highlights, 2006-07

Academic Accolades• Two seniors named National Merit Semifinalists; seven

named National Merit Commended Scholars.

• Every member of the Class of 2007 – 139 students – wenton to continuing education: 94% to four-year colleges,4% to two-year colleges, 1% to postgraduate work, and1% to technical higher education.

• A record 24 students named Advanced PlacementScholars.

• More than 130 students took AP exams.

• Fifty-two juniors and seniors inducted into the NationalHonor Society.

• SAT scores remain at a 30-year high.

New Technologyand Improved Facilities

• Forty new state-of-the-art computers installed in comput-er labs.

• Four classrooms in the Math Corridor were upgraded with white boards, Smart boards, and LCD projectors mounted on the ceiling.

• A total of 12 Smart boards throughout the building.

• Navin Room and Campus Ministry office were renovated.

Winning Seasons• Field hockey became a varsity sport.

• Nine teams – football, golf, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, baseball, and boys’ and girls’ soccer – all advanced to state tour-naments.

• Baseball team set a school record for wins, finishing as state runner-up.

• 184 students named to the conference All-Academic team.

Fine and Performing Arts Awards• Women’s Choir placed first (Gold Medal Ranking) at Heritage Festival in New York City, while Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band

all placed second.

• Concert Band and Chamber Choir placed third (Superior Rating) at the Music in the Park Festival at Six Flags New England.

• Syncopate, the year-old dance team, competed in two categories at a national competition in Las Vegas, placing first (National Champions) and sec-ond, respectively.

• Northwest Passages, our student-produced school newspaper, won first place from the National Scholastic Press Association and a silver rating from theColumbia Scholastic Press Association – the highest such journalism awards in the paper’s history.

• Several members of the newspaper staff also won awards for individual journalistic achievements.

• The Writer, our literary magazine, was awarded First Place from the American Scholastic Press Association.

Rev. Frascadore Society $25,000-$49,999

As the school’s first president, Rev. Henry C. Frascadore ini-tiated the Annual Fund and pioneered the development of

the Northwest Catholic Endowment Fund. As a result, theschool grew tremendously, and today’s students continue toenjoy the fruits of these programs.

Rev. Colton Society $10,000-$24,999

During his time at Northwest Catholic, Rev. BradfordColton, the first principal, was an exemplary leader, educatorand mentor to many students. He lived the mission of ourschool with humbling grace and dedicated his life to educat-ing others.

1961 Society $5,000-$9,999

For some reason, perhaps it was divine providence, I knew in 8th grade I needed to attendNorthwest Catholic I grew up in the Elmwood section of West Hartford and the kids I washanging around with, let’s just say, were not on a great track educationally. Had I continuedon this track, well, I just can’t imagine where I’d be today. I knew I needed the discipline, aca-demic rigor and the religious-based value system that Northwest Catholic had to offer.Northwest Catholic truly changed my life. It prepared me for the academic challenges ofWesleyan University and ultimately Harvard Business School. Whatever success I haveachieved, it was built on a foundation of a loving family, great friends, and the caring teachersand demanding coaches of Northwest Catholic. The Northwest Catholic faculty, supported by administrators and staff, devote their time and energy to students’ intellectual, social, psychological, and

spiritual development. As the core members of the School’s learning community, the faculty is dedicated to the maintenance of a stimulating and enrich-

ing educational environment. While that dedication is most obvious in their attention and concern for students, it also appears in the generosity with

which faculty and staff support the School’s mission. Two members of the faculty – Paul Fitzpatrick and Joan Keating-McKeon – this year wrote a beau-

tiful letter of invitation to their colleagues, inviting them to consider gifts to the annual fund; the letter read, in part; “We are truly blessed to work daily

in a vocation, rather than a job. Daily we are given the privilege of serving God’s children in imitation of the greatest teacher, Jesus. We are writing to

ask you to extend your generosity beyond the classroom … and consider making a gift that will be used to fund a student in need of financial assistance.”

As a result, six students received financial aid that would otherwise not have been available to them.

Torrential rain forced the first-ever postponement of the annual golf tournament from the originally scheduled date of June 4, 2007 to June 19, 2007.Patient golfers were rewarded with a picture-perfect day at Wampanoag Country Club for the 30th annual event, which was named this year for Rev.Bradford Colton, the school’s first principal. With Jim O’Toole ’78, CP as chair and Dan Filomeno CP as co-chair, the tournament grossed $39,980and netted $19,434.57. The proceeds from this year’s tournament were used to help need-based students meet the costs of tuition, making NorthwestCatholic affordable to worthy students who might otherwise not have been able to attend.

T he Heritage Society recognizes as members those alumni, parents and friends of Northwest Catholic who make a planned gift

to the School. Planned gifts include a provision in a will or trust; naming Northwest Catholic as the beneficiary of a life insur-

ance policy, pension, profit-sharing, IRA or 401(k) plan; establishing a Charitable Gift Annuity (see below) or Charitable

Remainder Trust. These gifts allow individuals to make an ultimate statement of commitment and will define future educational

opportunities for deserving students.

Scholarship-Funding OpportunitiesOver the past two decades, alumni parents and friends have chosen to honor an individual or family while helping students in financial

need by funding an endowed scholarship. A portion of the annual earnings ensures that needy students can take advantage of all the educa-tional opportunities Northwest Catholic has to offer. Endowed scholarship funds are essential to the promotion of a diverse economic back-ground and to Northwest Catholic’s tradition of supporting students of need. Danielle Belliveau joins ourScience Department, where shewill teach Biology. She is a grad-uate of Eastern ConnecticutState University and had beenworking as a substitute teacherin the Norwich and Grotonschool districts.

Teresa Bournique ’84 returns toher alma mater as a Religionteacher. After graduating magnacum laude from St. Joseph Collegewith a degree in Religious Studies,Ms. Bournique worked for severalyears in the private sector, andthen as a classroom assistant at apublic school. She has also beenextremely active in Sacred Heart Parish in Suffield, teaching in theRCIA and CCD programs, directing the Vacation Bible School, andworking in youth ministry.

Sarah Desroches joins the English Department. A graduate ofCentral Connecticut State University (B.A. in English) and St.Joseph College (M.A. in Reading and Language), Ms. Desrochestaught at Berlin and New Britain High Schools and was the JVGirls’ Soccer Coach for one season at Conard High School inWest Hartford.

Jane Leary is the new Director of Constituent Relations in theAdvancement Office – and, considering her ties to the school,seems well-suited to the job: Her husband Jim ’65 and both hersons (Jay ’05 and Sean ’07) are alumni. She’s also been an activeNorthwest Catholic volunteer, including a three-year stint (withNoreen Knortz) as co-chair of Saturday Night Live. Mrs. Learyearned her BA from Regis College and her MA from St. JosephCollege, and worked most recently as a parent liaison in the NewBritain public school system. She will be responsible for reunions,phonathons, and special events like the Golf Tournament, Athletic

Hall of Fame, and Grandparents’ Day – and Saturday Night Live!

Debra LeBel brings nine years of experience in the Advancementoffice at Miss Porter’s School to her new position as an Assistant inour Advancement office. Proficient in a wide range of softwarethat’s critical in the fundraising arena, Ms. LeBel has also workedat The Institute for Living and CIGNA.

Michelle Murphy, new Director of Communications, is also aCurrent and Alumni Parent of Kate ’07 and Jack ’10. A graduateof Georgetown University and the Columbia University GraduateSchool of Journalism, Mrs. Murphy had been the Director ofDevelopment and Admissions at St. Thomas the Apostle Schoolsince May 2005.

Jennifer Puskarz joins our Social Studies Department, where shewill teach History. She earned an undergraduate degree in U.S.History from the State University of New York at Albany, and thenworked as a substitute teacher in the West Hartford and SouthWindsor school systems while completing a Master’s degree inSecondary Education at UConn.

Raymond Sinclair, another UConn graduate(Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of MusicEducation), is the newest member of our Fine andPerforming Arts Department. In addition toteaching music, Mr. Sinclair is our Band Director,overseeing the concert band, jazz band, advancedjazz band, pep band, and wind ensemble. He hasa wide array of experience in music instruction inthe Greater Norwich area.

Terri Turley joined our math department in themiddle of last year, after Carol Schave’s retirement.A graduate of the University of Hartford, where sheearned a BS degree in Education, Ms. Turleyworked for CIGNA from 1989-2000, including atwo-year stint as the Year 2000 project manager.

National Merit Scholarship Program Honors Nine Seniors

N ine outstanding seniors have been honored by theNational Merit Scholarship Program for exceptionalperformance on the PSAT/NMSQTs taken in October

of junior year.

Four students were named National Merit Semifinalists:Jessica C. Gioia, daughter of Ms. Alisa Conte of Rocky Hill;Hannah L. Pelton, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Russell Pelton ofEnfield; Kenneth G. Three students were named Commended Students: RachelGodbout, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Godbout of

Wethersfield; Taylor Knortz, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. DavidKnortz of East Granby; and Keating McKeon, son of Mr. &Mrs. Michael McKeon of West Hartford.

Two students – Natalie Bell and Jasmine Clayton – werehonored as part of the National Achievement Test. Natalie is thedaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Todd Bell of Bloomfield, whileJasmine is the daughter of Ms. Kimberly Clayton of Hartford.

“These students have worked very hard to excel not only intheir studies, but also in numerous activities,” said PrincipalMargaret Williamson. “They continue to enhance the commu-nity of Northwest Catholic with their gifts.”

The four Semifinalists will now continue in the competitionfor possible designation as National Merit Finalists and forMerit Scholarships that will be awarded next spring.

Not bad for its first year in existence! Syncopate, the NorthwestCatholic High School Dance Team led by moderator KerriSmith, blew the competition away at the Dance America/DanceOlympus National competition in Las Vegas this past July.Having qualified for nationals at the regional competition inBoston,, the team went on to compete in two categories – andwon in both.

“Take It To The Floor,” a group hip-hop number, captured sec-ond place in the Intermediate Large Group Hip-Hop category,while “Break It Down,” an original breakdance/acro routinefeaturing three students, won first place in their category aswell as the title National Champions. Smith said she expectsthe team to grow this year, and she intends to have the dancerscompete in Boston and at the 2008 National Finals in Orlando.

That’s a lot of cookies! Brandon Marshall ’08, inspired bySports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly to fund the purchase ofmosquito nets to help combat malaria in Africa, raised $1,210by selling baked goods last spring (here to Patrice Hubert’08). That was enough to buy 121 nets.Brandon plans to holdmore bake sales this year for his “Nothing but Nets” project,and is “shooting” to beat his own fundraising record.

Learning to Be Better Teachers

Imagine returning to class the day after school gets out?

Nine Northwest Catholic teachers were among two dozeneducators from the Hartford Archdiocese who just couldn’t stayaway after the 2006-07 school year ended. That’s partly becausea seminar created by a Harvard professor was luring them back.

Laura Porter, an educational consultant with a firm calledResearch for Better Teachers, conducted the workshop titled“The Skillful Teacher: Building Your Teaching Skills” on the

Northwest Catholic campus from June 20-22. Emphasizing col-legiality and experimentation, the seminar offered a number ofinstructional strategies, as well as new ways to observe and sup-port peers.

The teachers who attended the workshop were Madonna Burke,Chris Gallagher, Claudia Hart, Patti Juda, Joan Keating-McKeon,Deb Metzler, Jeffrey Sutherland, Marisa Varney, and DaveWoodford.

What a spring! Despite what sometimesseemed to be endless rain, the NorthwestCatholic athletes turned in one of the finestcompetitive seasons in school history.

BaseballThe baseball team (21-3 overall) led the

way by rewriting our record books. Theyset a school record for wins and posted ourfirst Northwest Conference baseball cham-pionship with a perfect 16-0 league record.Senior pitchers Jack Wagoner (6-0) andKyle Sumple (7-0) were named to the All-Conference Team; Jack was also selected asAll-State. Behind the plate, senior catcherMike Bourdon was a rock, demonstratingoutstanding defense and a superior andintimidating arm. With a .394 batting aver-age, Michael was also named both All-Conference and All-State. Senior shortstopRob Dornfried (.418, 37 runs, 5 homeruns, 24 RBI), junior leftfielder Tony Blake(.394, 32 runs, 19 RBI), and freshman cen-terfielder Tom Bourdon (.424, 21 runs, 16RBI), were selected for the All-Conferenceteam, as well. Jack Wagoner was the teamMVP, and Mike Bourdon received the

Coaches’ Award.

In the Class S, state tournament theIndians were seeded number 2 and receiveda first-round bye. Playing at home in round2, the boys beat Cromwell High 11-5, withKyle Sumple getting the victory. In Bristolfor the quarterfinals, Coach Carlson and hisband squeezed out a 2-1 nail-biter overShepaug on a Jack Wagoner one-hitter.Mike Bourdon won the game with a walk-off, bases-loaded single in the bottom of theseventh. At the state semifinals at MuzzyField, Kyle and Jack combined forces to putNorthwest Catholic in the state champi-onship, beating defending State ChampsWindsor Locks, 6-4.

Yale Field – and the Indians – were readyon Saturday, June 9, despite a rainy morn-ing. Northwest Catholic had not been inthe baseball state final since 1965, and a

dedicated crowd of Northwest fans was onhand. The Indians came up just a littleshort, dropping the game 6-4 to St.Bernard’s and finishing as Class S state run-ner-up. Congratulations to Coach Carlsonand his expert staff on leading the boysthrough such a grand season. The team fin-ished the season at 7th overall in the state inthe Hartford Courant poll — our highestranking ever.

Dear Northwest Catholic Family,

It has been my great pleasure to have had the opportunity to collect and write these “sports notes” for manyyears. Athletics is part of the glue that holds the Northwest Catholic community together, and I have been mostproud to record and pass on to all of you the great accomplishments of our teams and athletes. For 31 wonder-ful years, I have watched as our young men and women competed and brought great honor and recognition toour school. Banners fill the gym and our trophy cases are full to overflowing, but there has been so much moreto Northwest Catholic athletics than victories and championships.

As a coach and an athletic director, I have been witness to the growth of individuals in mind, body, and spirit. Ihave watched friendships form that have lasted for lifetimes. I have seen lessons learned that have transcendedthe playing fields and the gym and have been carried on into careers and family life. I have seen sacrifices madeby competitors, coaches, and parents all in such an unselfish and generous manner that I get emotional just think-ing about them. My life has been truly blessed to have been part of this.

I want to thank all of you for making Northwest Catholic part of your lives. There is truly no other place like it anywhere. It is my hopeand intention to stay involved with our school, and I hope you will do so, as well. Perhaps I will see you at a game, the Hall of Fame ban-quet, the Golf Tournament, or Saturday Night Live. We can talk over old times and share a few memories of fun and glory passed, or we cancatch up on what’s new in our lives and at Northwest Catholic.

Two days after graduation, catcher MichaelBourdon was drafted by the Boston Red Sox inthe 41st round of the amateur player draft; he isbelieved to be the first Northwest Catholic ath-lete to hold this distinction.An excellent three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball), Mikeis now a freshman at Fairfield University, wherehe received a scholarship to play baseball.

turned in an equally stellar season: theirregular-season record was 21-10-1, and theyfinished third in the Northwest Conference.The squad was led by junior KeithKwasnik, averaging just over 36 strokes for9 holes during the regular season; he was theteam MVP and was named to the All-Conference team. Sophomore MattCollins and freshman Brendan Lempjoined Keith on the All-Conference team.Senior captain Kevin Bonney won theCoaches’ Award. Seeded first for the ClassS championship at Blue Fox Run in Avon,the boys made a gutsy showing, finishing asstate runner-up to second-seededHousatonic Valley Regional High School byfive strokes overall (317-322). KeithKwasnik (who shot 76 for the 18 holes) wonAll-State honors. Kevin Bonney and MattCollins each shot 81.

LacrosseThe boys’ lacrosse team finished the regu-

lar season at 13-3, good enough to be seededfifth in the Class S state tournament. SeniorJoe Ludlow led the team with 71 pointsoverall, while brother Mike Ludlow led thesquad with 31 goals. Senior Mike Boyascored 28 times and junior Chris Kevorkian20. Defense, however, became theNorthwest Catholic trademark, as juniorgoalie Joe Buda recorded 206 saves, and agroup of stalwart defensemen — includingseniors Chris Knortz and Sean Leary and

junior Kevin Eagan — protected him. MikeBoya, Sean Leary, and Mike Ludlow werenamed second-team All-Staters, ChrisKnortz was the MVP, and senior TimMurphy received the Coaches’Award. In theClass S state tournament, Coach ChrisGallagher’s boys easily took Valley RegionalHigh School 11-3, but fell 14-3 in the quar-terfinals to fourth seed New Fairfield ongraduation afternoon.

Under the guidance of coaches Jill andBill Mullady, girls’ lacrosse finished the reg-ular season at 10-6, after getting off to aslow start with a young squad (there wereonly two seniors on the team). The one-twopunch of senior Brittany Massaro and jun-ior Ashley Mara accounted for 111 of theteam’s 162 goals. Brittany was named MVPand was a second team All-Stater; Ashleywas chosen for the All-State first team.Junior Kelsey Cahalan won the Coaches’Award, sophomore Kayleigh Donnellycontributed 19 goals, and freshmanBridget Daly made 132 saves in goal. Inthe Class II state tournament the girls beatthe eighth-seeded Pomperaug High Schoolin Southbury by a score of 10-7 triumph,but then lost 11-6 to the number-one-ranked Stonington. Fifteen varsity letterwinners will return next year.

Northwest Catholic’s athletic program was named the 2nd place winner of the MichaelsAchievement Cup for Class SS, based on its success in the 2005-06 season. This wasthe fifth year in a row that Northwest Catholic finished in the top three in the statein its class. The award – which is based on a school’s won/loss record, the strength ofits program offerings, and student participation — was presented on April 22 at theGold Key Dinner of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance.

Senior Brittany Massaro won the Brian Piccolo Award and scholarship from theGreater Hartford UNICO. Overcoming a serious ankle injury, Brittany became a two-time,All-State athlete in lacrosse. She is a freshman at Springfield College.

TrackThe girls’ track team turned in a stellar 7-

1 season, finishing second in the NorthwestConference meet. Senior Jacquie Beliveautook first place in the 100- and 300-meterhurdles, breaking a school record in the 300that had stood since 1979. Teaming withjuniors Kristina Krupa, Ashley Gostyla,and Ida Cance, Jacquie was also part of the4x400-meter relay team that placed first.Ida Cance was first in the high jump, whilejunior Tiffany Hyde and senior CamilleMoore took first and second place, respec-tively, in the shot put. Juniors TaylorCarter, Maya Dean, and Ida Cance teamedwith freshman Jenniqua Bailey to placesecond in the 4x100 relay. All of these girlswere selected as All-Conference. Jacquiealso won All-State recognition in the 300hurdles and was named team MVP. JuniorMegan Clark won the Coaches’ Award.

Boys’ track improved markedly over lastspring, finishing sixth in the conferencemeet. Mike Knowles was named All-Conference in the discus, and juniorBrendan Jasper did likewise in the shotput. Mike was named the team MVP, withjunior sprinter Manny Simpini takinghome the Coaches’ Award. Returningcoach Jeff Przech has much to look forwardto with young athletes on both teams.

team qualified for the state playoffs with a 9-7 record. Senior Meghan Kiley went 11-5and freshman Emily McDonough went 13-3 to lead the squad and qualify as individualsin the State Open. Meghan was the teamMVP, while fellow senior and co-captainKristina Carreira won the Coaches’ Award.

Although the boys’ tennis team finished4-11, junior Jon Olszewski and freshmanJoe McAndrews were the NorthwestConference doubles champions. Both werenamed All-Conference. Senior captainAnkit Harpaldus was the MVP for CoachTim Crowley, with fellow senior AdamPokusa taking home the Coaches’ Award.

SoftballThe softball team’s 3-17 record was

deceiving, as the girls battled hard and werevery competitive throughout the season.Senior Veronica Marquis was excellent incenterfield and led the team with a .347 bat-ting and 18 RBIs, winning MVP honors.She was also selected to the All-Conferenceteam. Fellow senior and co-captainKathleen Spignesi won the Coaches’Award. Sophomore Nina Varney pitched109 innings, recorded 101 strikeouts, andhad three shutouts.

80sWilder Leavitt ’82 and his wife, MaryMorningstar, live in Bethesda, MD. “Wedon’t have any children, but are fortunateenough to have several of Mary’s siblings liv-ing in the area, whose children we love toindulge,” he wrote in an e-mail to his class-mates, when expressing regrets for missing

the 25th reunion. Mary is an environmentalattorney for Lockheed Martin, while Wildersays he’s “had several careers, ending withmy present occupation as an attorney andvolunteer EMT, which is my real love (see“Alumni Perspective” on p. 12). Marriednearly 17 years, Wilder says he and Marywould love to hear from anyone visiting theD.C. area.

LTC Kelly A. Murray MD ’83 was award-ed the Purple Heart, three Bronze StarMedals (one with Valor), and an ArmyCommendation Medal with Valor duringtwo tours of duty in Iraq. She taught manyclasses for Iraqi doctors covering the latestprocedures and medicines, as well as reha-bilitated ten hospitals and 76 clinics used bymore than five million Iraqi citizens in EastBaghdad. She also made sure the Americantroops received improved Kevlar vests, sav-ing many more lives.

This past year, Kelly was sent on a specialsix-month mission to Afghanistan to assessthe medical situation for the Pentagon. InJuly 2007, she moved to Texas to writeArmy manuals. Michael Collyer ’86 is now working as anAssistant United States Attorney inCleveland, Ohio. He had been prosecutinggun crimes, but is moving to the white-col-lar crime section to prosecute economiccrimes and health care fraud cases. He andhis wife Jen also enjoy renovating their 85-year-old house and spending time with theirthree daughters, Rachael, 14, Katy, 12, andAva, 5.

Gillian Pratt ’86 is a new mom, and sheloves it! Her adoption came through inMay after nearly three years of waiting. Shenow has a baby boy, Alexander CharlesBenedict Pratt (Alex), whom she has hadsince he was 12 days old. Her new motto is:“Sleep is for Sissies!”

Sophia Taylor-Edwards ’87 joined OprahWinfrey and Gayle King for five days atMiraval Resort and Spa near Tucson, AZ.Sophia and 59 other women won the

chance to be a part of this self-empower-ment week. Sophia’s fear of the water,which she has had since childhood, wasuncovered during the meditation on thisretreat.

Dan Murphy ’05 is a junior at Notre DameUniversity, where he is double majoring inJournalism and Broadcasting and is a sportswriter for the school’s daily newspaper, TheObserver. Dan has been on the Dean’s Listeach semester, and completed an internshipat a local South Bend television station lastyear. He will study at Notre Dame’s campusin Freemantle, Australia, during the secondsemester this year.

Heard on NPR: Catie Talarski ‘99Recent Northwest Catholic alums who are fans ofConnecticut Public Radio may have done an aural double takerecently: Did that reporter say her name was Catie Talarski? Is thatOUR Catie Talarski?

The answer is, yes! Catie Talarski, who graduated fromNorthwest Catholic in 1999 and with a sociology degree fromAssumption College in 2003, is now a producer for “WhereWe Live,” a daily morning news talk show on WNPR. She alsoresearches and reports stories about health care issues facingConnecticut’s underserved, immigrant, and refugee communi-ties. Her work has aired on “Here and Now,” “Day to Day,”NPR’s podcasts, and on other NPR affiliate stations.

Considering where she’s been and what she’s done over thepast eight years, this seems like the most logical possible placefor Catie to be.

After college, she served with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps inSacramento, CA (which she chronicled in a past edition ofNorthwest Catholic NOW). A subsequent job at BostonChildren’s Hospital led Catie indirectly to Nepal, accompanyingyoung U.S. resident doctors to a Himalayan clinic where shedid research and passed out free vitamins and medicine. “Wethen trekked from Lukla, Nepal, to the Everest Base Camp in alittle over a week, reaching about 18,000 feet,” she said.“It wasone of the most incredible experiences – I am very lucky tohave been able to have that experience.”

Back home in the States, Catie attended the Salt Institute forDocumentary Studies in Portland, ME, in the spring of 2006,where she studied documentary radio and produced two doc-umentaries: “The Maine Squeeze,” about an accordion band,and another about a group of homeless teens putting on a playabout their life experiences. She’s been working full time atNPR in Connecticut since January.

The Class of 1982 reunited on Saturday, September 22, to reminisce and share theiramazement that it had been 25 years since they graduated from Northwest Catholic. Afterwine, cheese and tours of the school, the group of about 60 people – many of whom hadcome in from all across the country -- continued the festivities with dinner and dancingacross the street at Wampanoag Country Club. “I was amazed at how comfortable and easyit was to be with everyone after so long,” said Annie Allard-Lane, who traveled fromColorado for the event. “I still have a sore throat from all the yapping!”

ALUMNIRuth (Hudak) Marzano ’74 passed away Tuesday, June 19,2007. A lifelong West Hartford-area resident, she attended St.Francis Nursing School after graduating from NorthwestCatholic. She spent 18 years working for Abrams InsuranceAgency in Bishop’s Corner. She is survived by her son JoshuaMarzano, her parents Stephen and Evelyn Hudak, and herbrothers Mark ’71, Craig ’79, Jim ’82 and Stephen Hudak.

Jeanne Serocke-Stavola ’80 and her husband Joseph Stavola ofPelham Manor, NY, passed away on June 9, 2007, in an auto-mobile accident. Joe and Jeanne were college sweethearts at theCollege of the Holy Cross. Jeanne went on to earn her lawdegree from Fordham University. She spent much of her freetime as an advocate for special needs children and had beennamed as the next president of the Special Education Parents’Association. Jeanne and Joe’s lives revolved around their familyand their two young sons, James and William.

B ack in the day, they were Northwest Catholic superstars– each in his or her own era, each for his or her ownsports. On Sept. 15, five outstanding alumni athletes

were recognized for their tremendous achievements by beinginducted into their alma mater’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.

The ceremony was held during a lovely reception and dinnerin Stosuy Gymnasium. Each new member was presented forinduction by another Northwest Catholic alumni athlete, whorecounted highlights of the honoree’s career. Athletic DirectorJoshua Reese ’95 and Liz Stafford ’00, chairman of the NWCAlumni Council, welcomed each person with congratulationsand two plaques – one that will be permanently mounted on theWall of Honor outside the Stosuy Gym, and one that wenthome with the honoree.

“Today’s Northwest Catholic athletes must thank each of youfor your accomplishments on our athletic fields,” said Reese.“You led the way toward a path of success and are part of the rea-son we have such a rich athletic tradition.”

Comprising only the third group of athletes to be voted intothe Hall of Fame, this year’s inductees were:

William Mullady ’66 of Bloomfield: Mullady was All-Conference in basketball and baseball, played on the state run-ner-up baseball team in 1965, and won the Northwest CatholicAthlete of the Year award in 1966. He’s currently the assistantcoach (with his daughter, head coach Jill Mullady) of theNorthwest Catholic Girls’ field hockey and lacrosse teams.

Richard Fairbrother, DMD ’70 of West Hartford: Named anAll-State basketball player and Athlete of the Year as a senior,Fairbrother hit the 1,000-point mark at both NorthwestCatholic and at Wesleyan University. He was an Academic All-American at Wesleyan in 1974.

Dennis Robinson ’75 of Ridgewood, N.J.: Another alumnus ofWesleyan University, Robinson was the first 1,000-yard rusherin Northwest Catholic football history. He was an All-StateHonorable Mention in 1973 and earned All-HCC honors infootball in 1974. At Wesleyan, he set six school records and ledthe nation in average yards per punt return in 1978.

Mary Cobb Gothers ’80 of Wethersfield: Gothers was the firstfemale to receive a partial scholarship to Boston College fortrack and cross country. At Northwest Catholic, she was theClass M cross-country state champion in 1978 and the Class M2-mile state championship in 1980. She has coached highschool cross country and track at Conard, Farmington, andNorthwest Catholic.

Elizabeth McNulty Alquist ’87 of West Hartford: Alquistearned All-HCC and All-State honors for basketball in both herjunior and senior years — and was All-HCC in soccer, as well,during the same time frame. She was a basketball Academic AllAmerican during her senior year at Mount Saint Mary’s College.She now coaches in the West Hartford Girls’ Basketball League.
