The Palouse Driver Safety Campaign
The Palouse RTPO, in partnership with
many state and local governments,
including Washington State University
started this campaign in 2016.
We strive for safe pathways home for
Washington State University and
University of Idaho students, as well as
our community members by raising
awareness and providing resources
about the risks of distracted, drowsy,
and inexperienced driving through out
the year.
Check your antifreeze
Inspect your tires
Replace your wipers
Check your windshield washer fluid
Check your engine oil
If affordable, sign up with emergency
road side service providers.
REMEMBER!!
Slow down, double your following
distances, anticipate traffic changes ahead,
and give yourself extra time to get where
you're going.
Frostbite
Wearing the right winter gear, including
insulated gloves and socks, will help
prevent frostbite.
Fatigue Make sure to get enough sleep and avoid
fatigue while commuting anywhere
during these cold winter months.
Dehydration Drinking enough water should be a must
during this winter. Your own car heating
system could be dehydrating you. We
might not feel as thirsty as the
temperature drops, however our body
still needs water to function. Stay Alert!

How to change a tire?
Before winter, make sure the chains fit your tires.
Pull completely off the road and out
of the way of traffic before installing, servicing, or removing tire chains.
Do not deflate tires to install tire
chains (tires should be at normal inflation.)
Make sure that all crosslink chain
hooks are Facing away from the tire.
Install as tightly as possible by hand
for maximum chain life and perfor-mance.
Drive forward one-car length and
retighten the chains if necessary. Do not exceed 35 miles per
hour. Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Avoid spinning of wheels.
Avoid hitting curbs with tire chains. If chains should fall, stop
immediately and repair or remove. Do not drive with a broken tire chain.
